the chief has one of the best stone faces ever
That's what makes Will Sampson so special. His expressions, or lack thereof, say it all. One of a kind who left way too soon.
@@lindalcoomes loved that man. Amazing painter and actor
Native american Indians by default do not waste emotion on people they do not know or care for which is why us palefaces branded them dumb before we understood the culture, so what you see is a very normal expression.
Steve Velkos 🗿
The nurse is stone colder
This movie is as close to perfection as it gets
I guess you could say it's...
as good as it gets
i could'nt agree more
@@HAL--vf6cg I guess what I'm tryin' to say is ... you make me want to be a better man ....
"sell crazy someplace else, were all stocked up here"!
There Will Be Blood, also
As a person who spent 3 years in a place just like this, from age 15 in 1971 until I was 18 (drugs) I can tell you this movie is absolutely uncanny in its accuracy in every detail. I even escaped and went on a boat ride too (to Nantucket). Best movie ever made.
I have worked in nursing care facility for the elderly a few years ago and things have not significantly improved from this movie im afraid in the overall care of people who are losing their minds & preception of reality. In a sense those facilities are institutions for people who can longer cope in the outside world by themselves and are housed there out of sight and out of the general public mind. Hogeway method seems to be the best way to go in dealing with people with mental issues but it is expensive and requires lots of resources.
David Evans. Same for france but year 2000. Last time i tried i couldn t take the movie. Fuck places like this.
@@Woodesies Hope it works out for you and you can cope with it without the fear of seeking help if you need too.
This reminds of the quote by Rorschach when the guy offered him to go to a mental health facility instead of prison if he pleads insanity and he answered him brilliantly "Prison is prison".
Reading these replies makes me want to cry. I really feel for anyone with mental illness or dementia or Alzheimers. My elderly mother spent a few weeks recovering in the skilled nursing wing of her continuing care facility (she was semi-independent the rest of the time) and when I visited her it was very hard not to feel sad and depressed for all the residents with dementia. Alzheimers is one of the most terrible diseases there is. My mom was fine mentally and I know it must've been horrible for her being around that. I sometimes lay awake at night getting anxiety thinking about what I will do if I ever become dependent like those poor people. I'm 57 and starting to think about getting old.
Matt Foley 17 and it breaks my heart thinking about those elderly people dealing with dementia and Alzheimer's, I just pray it never happens to my grandparents
"Well, it don't hurt him, either, does it?" love that phrase
So many good ones in this movie, I personally preferred you're gonna pull that hen-house shit now"
The scene is memorable for not only being the beginning of bringing Chief out of his shell, but for being the beginning of Ratched's realization that McMurphy poses a very real threat to her authority. He's succeeding just by the force of his spirit where she, in spite of all her formal education, has failed, and she does not like it one little bit.
The best analysis.
Except Chief was purposefully in his shell.
Chief was disassociating on purpose like he had given up trying to leave and was accepting his fate until Mac arrived, he inspired him to want to be free again. Revived his spirit.
Joe Biden reminds me of Ratched
@billiamc1969 trumpers blabbing about politics again
I believe that Chief was the smartest person on the ward. I don't blame him from being quiet most of the time. It's because that he only trusts a certain person(McMurphy). He did a Hell of an acting job. This movie is definitely in my top two favorites of all time.
Gotta ask - what's the other one?...
@@ftollan I would say Christopher Lloyd lol

They do NOT make films like this any more!
There are always good films but the 1970's had a kind of film revolution which was followed later.
John Cunningham Tarantino made good stuff
Stephen Critchett my favorite nut movie
It's powerful!
+Stephen..Yup. No shitty CGI or fiery explosions. What a relief.
I ran the projectors at a large theater when this movie came out. Back then one movie played all summer. Yep, one movie.... all summer.... 4 times a day.... I enjoyed each showing, I enjoyed Haring other people laugh. I knew every word in the movie. I was 14, a great job to have as a kid.
Dude me too! I worked in 75 when Jaws came out. I could just about quote that whole movie from start to finish
Im jealous as shit. Not only is this my favourite film, but working the projector has always been a dream of mine.
Then you had the best job ever when you were a kid. There certainly aren’t stuff like that these days TBH.
When he had his hand sound the nurse's neck, many in the theater yelled, " kill that m.f. bitch !"
How much were tickets back in those days?
@2:43 Nurse Ratched furious that McMurphy is trying to liberate the souls of the committed.

What I love about this scene is that (bancini) always say he's tired and he thinks he is weak but he actually carried Jack Nicholson on his shoulders and that is a good point about the people who always think they're weak, they can't do something but they actually can!
I can see that but in the book his skull was dented by the doctor who delivered him
Yes.
Lol your profile picture & name- really good.

This movie was made in 1975. At that time most people could write and spell properly, even Americans. What is this lol shit? Are you busy? No time to write or spell properly? I'll find you, even if you have the name of a liar, and personally beat you to a pulp if you ever start lolling again.

How can you not love Will Sampson? (the chief) A great actor and true American that died too early.

Just Google Remembering Will Sonny Sampson Jr. if you'd like to check it out. I hope people will think it does him justice.

Just with a basket and a ball...McMurphy saved Big Cheif life.
Just with a fuckin ball and a basket he finally managed to give him that hope and strenght that in Big Chief seemed lost for ever.
This scene is a masterpiece.
@jordianme: Another example of how the noble savage is always taken advantage of and used and abused by our politicians.
Yeah, McMurphy also gave him the confidence that Chief somehow lost. Also the way chief fooled all the guys working there with him being “deaf and dumb” is just fucking brilliant and makes you wonder what chief really did to get out in there 😅
@@oilmustflow The Chief had visual and auditory hallucinations in the book I believe, he believed nurse Rachet had a terrible machine he called "The combine" that would stalk the halls for her.

PUT IT IN THE BASKET CHIEF !
There is no film that encompasses what it means to be a human being more than this one. At least in my opinion. It's inspiring and beautiful and so utterly depressing.
RIP to the legendary Will Sampson 🙏
He died in Houston where im from and currently live. Couldn't believe when I found this out.
IM TIRED!
I both love and hate this world. This movie makes me feel both happiness and sadness at the same time. It reminds me of life.
Nicholson’s best. One of the ballsiest actors in 60 years.
One of the greatest films ever!! jack is so fucking good in this film and so are the rest of the cast!! So many great characters!!
Exactly man! He gave chief his lost confidence and identity back that he somehow forgot about, and that’s why he killed McMurphy at the end bc he couldn’t see him living like a zombie. Sad scene
Right? Unbelievable cast for sure. classic.
chief was tall enough for real basket ball
I need to watch this whole movie again. It was so good!
Happy birthday Jack. You are still king of Hollywood.
I haven't seen this movie since I was kid. As an adult I just realized Jack is the real mental health expert here and he really tries to help everyone. Which is why he upset nurse Ratchets apple cart.
EPILOGUE: Following Chief's release from the mental hospital. He went on to become a world-class poker coach teaching players to keep a straight face.
the novel and film, respectively, are two of the greatest, most meaningful works of art ever created
Greatest Movie ever made. Best line , “ The next women that takes me on is gonna light up like a Pinball Machine and payoff in Silver Dollars. “
😂😂😂
The look on Washington's face at 1:16 is superb. I haven't seen this movie in it's entirety for over 10 years now, but it's one of the many moments that will stick in my mind as long as I live.
I’m definitely going to be watching this again tonight. It’s been too long. I’ve seen it so many times I had the lines memorized. God film was so good in the 70s. You can’t touch this!
A classic - one of the greatest movies ever made - and tragic beyond words.
All MacMurphy wanted in life was an eternity of Playtime. And, he invited as many people as possibly could …
Might be the best movie I ever saw and I never could bring myself to watch it a second time.
Man, I crack up when 'McMurphy' tries to turn Bancini around with his wiggle at 2:27! Hysterical little bit.
Bancini! Where the F&%K you goin'?
I just watched this film last week, Chief and McMurphy are my favorite character by far
McMurphy is the real doctor of the movie. He inspired hope in these men
When I saw this movie the first time, I thought this is cool. Nicholsen is a cool man and he would have no problem to talk himself out of this awful place. But als longer the film progresses you get a slight idea he will never leave it. A mayor drop down! (this was when I was eight years old; I've seen the movie one time again and this was the last time when I studied arts)
This scene with the chief and the basket ball is very important for the whole set-up. For the chief McMurphy begins to be someone he can trust. All the things McMurphy says are valuable and are useful to be done. In the end (when McMurphy is dead) the Chief throws the big stone through the window from whom McMurphy said it is possible to move it if you have the will to do so.
This is a 100% performance by Nicholson. Look at this scene. After the orderly tries to discourage him from talking to the Chief, he retorts, and when he looks back at Chief he gives an incredulous shake of the head as if to blow him off. Like one of the guys who is supposed to be in charge of the "crazies" is crazy himself because he just expects so little of them. What a performance.
This movie features the kind of humor you won't find anywhere else. It's so fresh, it's like nothing you've seen before! This scene was burned into my comedic mind! Lol
ten bears doesn't play with balls he plays with arrows
I love the nicknames Jack gives everybody lmao
Best Classic movie of all times,,.
Iv had the name Chief from this movie since i was 17 im now 52 .Still one of the best films ever made,
0:55 That look you make when you think you're hearing elaborate BS but can't quite pinpoint it exactly....
The Chief is committing 3 second violations all the time.
Best movie I've ever seen in my life. Won all the oscars that year. Compares to nothing
Just the title alone wouldn't be PC in today's mixed up society. Great movie!!
Oh in today's society all female characters must be Mary Sue's, a character like Nurse Ratched would never fly today, LOL.
General, get this man around here!!
What a perfect movie. Hits every emotion.
They’ll never find someone as good or crazy as Nicholson.
I was always skeptical about watching this movie but I got to tell you after watching this movie this morning this is a top 5 movie of all time
They just don’t make movies like this anymore, they just don’t.
Chief is the most smart one, that is why I like him.
Did you see the determination on that face when that old man went to hit that bag with his cane.

The book was excellent. It is from the Chief's point of view.
Movie is one the greatest American pieces of cinema and story.

no too hard chief, you'll crush all the air out of it - the size of the chief's hands!

*THE* best film ever made!
This scene is extremely significant because Randall taught the Chief how to lift things up over his head, which ultimately freed him when he slam-dunked the water cooler through the window and escaped at the end of the movie.
Oh man! I've watched this brilliant movie 50 times, and never made that connection. Thanks!
The Chief has icharisma. Native Amercians were extremely popular with German boys from 1880s til 1980s. We had an author named Karl May who wrote best selling books about deep friends
ip between German immigrant Old Shatterhand and Apache Chief Winnetou. For me as a boy it was the highlight of my childhood in the 1970s to see them both in the Winnetou movies. It left forever the value of true friendship imprinted in my soul....
One of my fave scenes of the entire movie. Mc Murphys scenes with chief were the best in the movie I think
Nicholson as McMurphy...along with de Niro's Jake La Motta, the greatest performance in cinema history
Good call - De Niro's best performance, in my opinion.
