I've learnt more about Shapr3d in the first 3 minutes than I have from any other tutorial. Amazing walk through and thank you for explaining each tool you use.
Defining angles is still there in the current version of Shapr3D. I just verified. Tap both the intersecting lines and you'll get an angle value that you can change. If you have a lot of constraints set then they may limit you from adjusting the value
Perfect! This tutorial does an excellent job of showing how to print a model like this in just one print run. Clear explanation with good additional information. Thank you.
To get the angle icon to show up (7:45), you have to have the two lines on the same sketche. The reason why you can't see the angle icon and modify it it's because the line from the orange rectangle is in sketch 1 and the second line is in sketch 2. You can select the sketch 1 and redraw the second line to have both line in the same sktech and you should be able to see and change the angle easily.
To get the angle icon to show up (7:45), I had to draw a new line that followed the edge on the left box. I then selected that line and the line going to the outer circle. The angle showed up and now I could change it to 45deg. After that, I deleted the new line.
7:45 Is that option gone with an update or did they just hide setting the angle somewhere? I couldn't find it. I can see the angle in the middle of the screen, but can't adjust it, so I had to try/error it for now.
Another great tutorial, but I'm definitely seeing some differences on my iPad. Perhaps it's the newer version of Shapr I'm using, or the iPad interface, but after extruding an object, you can't select the face like you show. I have to hide the sketch item first, otherwise, I end up selecting the wrong stuff, with selecting just the face being impossible. Additionally, my sketch faces seem to be left behind when I rotate or align an object, which isn't what you show in your video. I don't know if I'm not selecting everything, or what, but my sketches have crud all over the place.
Yeah, unfortunately I’m seeing this issue too. It’s a sketch-castrophe! My solution has been to just hide the sketch lines in the “Items” tab. For the issue with extruding, you might need to update your firmware. I was able to extrude my shapes even if the sketch lines overlapped them; just be careful to not select the boarder of a sketch line or it will not extrude the piece you want.
I'm having issues with the area around 7:50 in the video. No matter how I selected the two lines, I cannot get an option to define the relative degree angle
I am finding your tutorials very helpful. They are easier to follow along then the Shpr 3D videos. How do you choose between radius and diameter when drawing a circle? I always seem to get the diameter option.
You can change it in your settings - support.shapr3d.com/hc/en-us/articles/360010687559-How-do-I-create-circles-and-ellipses- Yours may have defaulted to the 'always raidus setting'

That's correct! It will 'bridge' inside the hinges. I suggest printing with .1mm layer height. The remaining default settings will print fine on a Prusa or equivalent type of 3D printer. Happy printing! :)
help! having an issue with the step at 8:35-- when i select the body in the sidebar menu to copy, it only copies part of the hinge, not the whole side face. Basically the circle elements and angled part are still all separate elements unlike the video where the entire side seems 'joined' as one. I've played it back multiple times and i don't see a step I missed.
Hi Doug. Can you confirm that you just have one body in the Items manager on the left side? You can also try shift clicking all of the parts that are separate on your end, before hitting the 'copy' badge. Otherwise, if you can link to a screencast it may help me notice something else. - Kevin
I think shapr3d is well good.. I was looking through CAD software, But none of them really did what I WAS THINKING. Shapr, Does do what I was thinking but is also well hard to explain or look up! But with this program can you draw say a cabinet and then you drew some components, Can you then move components around? And plan how it'll be laid out. Make sure everything will fit and so on..
Unfortunately, at this time Shapr3D does not make it easy (or fast) to lay all your parts flat. For comparison, Fusion 360 has an 'auto arrange' feature that does it in a few clicks. Sharp3D forces you to use Move or Align to manually reposition them one by one.
Thanks for watching, Rusty! Generally, use construction planes any time you need to create Sketches and don't have an existing 3D body to sketch from. Construction planes can also be used with select modeling features. I'll be covering some of the core workflows/uses cases of them in future lessons in this series. What project are you working on?
I'm working on two woodworking projects. The first is a modification of a shop filter that Jay Bates did using SketchUp. I'm essentially redrawing it in Shapr3d using dimensions for my blower and the common filters I use in my house. The other is a design for a very deep shop cabinet that has lots of un-usable space. I'm trying to design something with vertical sliding drawers that will slide completely out giving me better use of the back 8 - 10" that are currently really hard to reach.
Hi Rhonda. Are you on the Mac/Windows or iPad version? Return/Enter key should work on all three. If you're still experiencing issues I would suggest contacting Shapr3D support: support.shapr3d.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
How to make the 3d object appear transparent in the viewport when in modeling mode? I am testing the trial, but can't change the opacity of the 3d model in the viewport, when modeling from an image reference.
You would need to make the clearance smaller, but I belive you'll find that hard to achieve similar to a laptop hinge with plastic alone. You can replace the pin with a premade metal pint and add some lithium grease to better replicate one.
Thanks, Klayton! Threads would be interesting. I'll be honest, Id do them in Fusion 360 over Shapr3D since they have a thread feature. Hoping Shapr3D adds one eventually :)
Hi, I appreciate these videos very much. However I’m having a problem and not sure what’s going on or what I missed. I wish I could provide a screenshot but I will do my best to explain. In this tutorial at 8:10 roughly, you begin to extrude the section with the 45 degree. The problem I am having is that section is not shaded in blue. All of the circles are shade but not this section. I am using an iPad if that helps. I would greatly appreciate some help on this. Thank you so much in advance.
Hi idkarts. I suspect that the line is not fully connected to the box/vertical line. You may have to zoom way in OR you can try to drag the end point and make sure it snaps to it. Using a constraint will also help ensure it stays connected to that area - as seen at approximately 7 mins. Let me know if that was it! Otherwise, I'll need you to share the file so I can take a closer look. Cheers!
That was the problem. It wasn’t connected to the circle. I did have to zoom really far in to see it. Now that I fixed it I can see that when I draw the line I need to make sure it said “edge” when attaching to the circle. Thank you so much for your quick response. Again, appreciate the work you do.
I am currently having a similar same problem. I checked the constraints and I can move the line around the circle and it stays connected to the side of the box. The area is blue. The angle input does not appear. The measure tool happily shows me the angle, but trial and error while drawing the point along the line does not seem to be the best solution. I am using windows though and the current beta.
Yep, got the same problem. Redrawn the hinge sketch twice over and same thing. And it's annoying I can't just select an angle dimension tool when it fails@@Mabutuja

Yes! In general, this is a universal hinge that can work with many things. I wouldn't recommend making it smaller than this. However, it does print well at larger sizes (and is typically stronger when thicker).
@@PDOShapr3d Nice, thanks! other question, the outer hinge and the clearence, does the size of them needs to increase in size proportionate of the thickenes of the inner hinge?
@@lulucoast The clearance does not need to change unless you have issues with the print based on your slicer settings. This works well for .1 and .15mm layer height. .2mm or greater may need to be tested.
What if I designed the whole box but in the very end I wanted to change its dimensions, let‘s say, make it deeper? Do I have to start again or is there a possibility of parametrisation?
Hi Martin. Shapr3D is a direct modeler. That means it's not fully parametric (like Fusion 360 or some others), but instead allows you to select the face and update the dimensions or push/pull the face accordingly. There are some pros and cons to direct modeling. One of the challenges (or frustrations) can be something like this were you may want to quickly create a bunch of different sizes. I still use Fusion 360 for all those sorts of projects.
Great question, Jordan! In this case, you could choose to join or not, depending on your desired outcome. I chose not to join/union the bodies which gives a little bit more flexibility if one needed to hide or alter either part. All bodies will be included whenever you export the file as an STL for 3D printing.
After creating the circles for the start of the hinge and adding the tangent line there is no box that pops up for the degree angle. Also when I try to extrude that area below the circles it isn’t a solid surface to be extruded, can someone help me with those two issues please?
Did you hold the SHIFT key when selecting the angled line and the vertical line? You'll have to select the two lines for the angled input to appear. If it's not when doing that, its likely that the lower end of the line is not connected to the other line.
What are your size/surface constraints? If you're looking to print larger then I would recommend a different design with a removable pin. You can also print each half separately.
Its a lot harder trying to do this on an iPad. Certain things aren't showing or happening. Circles are drawn in diameters rather than radius, and the diagonal rectangle doesn't draw out in the ISO view, it draws flat. Very frustrating when trying to follow along.
Hi Chris. You can change the diameter/radius in the settings. I've been recording with all the default settings on Mac OS. Not sure why the iPad version sounds like it defaults to Diameter. I didn't realize the iPad version won't draw while in ISO/perspective views. I'll have to test that.
You gotta change some settings yourself. I forget who's channel but there's a couple people with good videos that explain how to do it exactly. Just keep looking around on RUclips
Hi Mark, this whole series was recorded on the Mac version. The iPad version is very similar with the exception of some of the sketching you have to click and drag on the iPad versus tap. I believe the Shapr3D team is working on better unifying the cross-platforms.
im having problems i followed each step and made sure the circle was locked and made the line tangent to it but when i try to change the degrees the circle changes shape and the line doesnt move idk what im doing wrong
Hi Tyler, can you double check that the horizontal line (attached to the circle's center point) is locked as well? Additionally, having a horizontal contsraint on it will help. It sounds like something is missing a constraint as the circle should not be able to move at all.
@@PDOShapr3d Hi, first I would like to thank you for the tutorial videos and putting your time for these. I have an issue also with the line and the circle part as enabling the "Tangent" lock it won't the line freely and get a message that "there is a restraint". I've tried multiple things and the only thing that kinda works is if i "disconnect" from the vertical line from the left side of the box but then it's not tangent and it doesn't move along side of the circle. Now I don't know if this issue to others or me, I'm using the Windows version which mentions that it's an early access
@@Avalance987 Thank you for watching :) I don't belive the Windows version should affect anything here. Would you be able to export as a Shapr3D file (.shapr) and send to me at support[at]productdesignonline.com ? It will likely be easier if I take a look at your file.
@@PDOShapr3d My apologies for the delay to reply back... After playing a little bit more I was able to find why it was happening. When I was creating the line, as a starting point I was choosing (snapping it) to the middle of the side of the box (purple point) and when I was enabling the "Tangent" it was locking it on both sides. I needed to snap (create) the line on a random spot of the side of the box. That way I was able to move it freely and also be Tangent to the circle.
@@Avalance987 no need to apologize! I appreciate the follow up as that helps me track things to point out in future lessons. Glad that you got it sorted out! Don't hesitate to comment if you run into issues in the future :)
Hi Notan. Not that I'm aware of. You'll have to 'Project' edges of the geometry to have a new sketch for a separate body. You could also extrude the face and then split the body to result in two bodies (depending on the type of geometry).
For windows Users, I am noticing a lot of differences. Example you cannot select the align tool first, you must click the face then hit the align tool or it will not work. I am having to find a lot of work arounds just to fix things, also the Program seems to have updated a lot already since this tutorial.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention! Unfortunately, I only have MacOS so cannot compare. I know they are working to unify the experiences better, but there are still some unexpected gaps/differences.
@PDO - Shapr3D it's ok it happens. I just wanted to make sure anyone else using windows had workarounds for it since I know I was getting frustrated, lol. Also, on Windows, there is no actual way to change the circle radius. it just says to use an elipse to get those options

Did you hold the SHIFT key when selecting the angled line and the vertical line? You'll have to select the two lines for the angled input to appear. If it's not when doing that, its likely that the lower end of the line is not connected to the other line.
Hey, how are you? This just popped up in my feed. When did you start this channel?
Hi Todd. Great to see you here. To answer your question - about a month and half ago :)
How does one print this if the print surface is not big enough?
What are your size/surface constraints?
If you're looking to print larger then I would recommend a different design with a removable pin. You can also print each half separately.
@@PDOShapr3d i thought of printing it at an angle.
@@PDOShapr3d I'm on a Mac and I can't find a settings tab to change diameter to radius.
Found it via the link you gave below. It is called Preferences for anyone else looking for it.
@@jeanhill5105 On Mac go to Shapr3D (upper left / Apple Menu) > Settings > Circular Annotations > select desired radius or diameter.
Adamsın 👌
What version ipad is this?
Hi Mark, this whole series was recorded on the Mac version. The iPad version is very similar with the exception of some of the sketching you have to click and drag on the iPad versus tap. I believe the Shapr3D team is working on better unifying the cross-platforms.
@@PDOShapr3d thank you!!
im having problems i followed each step and made sure the circle was locked and made the line tangent to it but when i try to change the degrees the circle changes shape and the line doesnt move idk what im doing wrong
@@Avalance987 Thank you for watching :)
I don't belive the Windows version should affect anything here.
Nice one. Is there an easy way to extrude an object face as a separate body rather than just making the selected object thicker?
@@ardentprops hi thank you for the information ,but i already try what you are saying .But when i click the face ..the align tools do not show up .Thanks again if you can me answer
Is the software free?
No. They offer a few different paid tiers.
Glad to be able to learn the basics - but the free version only allows two models, so you can't complete all of the tutorials without deleting and the color is now part of visualization and no longer available without paying for the $299/year version. I'm not even sure I'll like this app and I can only test some things without giving a credit card for 14 days of a trial? I guess I'll just have to imagine and delete as I go.
Can’t afford too 🧐
I'm sorry "return key" are you doing it on C64?
porque no sale la traducción en Español ???
Hi Juan. At this time, I'm only uploading English captions. Unfortunately, RUclips removed the ability for the community to add translations. I will look at the metrics and consider adding Spanish/other languages.
currenly, it looks like you iss a lot of useful tools. Plus, not sure why are u moving gismo, it doesn't matter where it is.
Printed. The center shaft breaks off very easily.
do you print the parts separate or all at once? And do you require supports or no?
