I really like the idea that MV have done with the SCS where they have paired a quickshifter/blipper with a rekluse clutch. Seems the best of all worlds. The appeal of never stalling (especially on big twin or single) is especially appealing. I prefer auto cars so don't see why bikes couldn't be the same. Especially once tech is refined.
Bike prices are bonkers. The last new bike I bought was a 2009 R1. Cost about £10k iirc. I'd rather big bikes went back to that tech and priced accordingly.
Had a Honda DCT for a day a few years ago and thought it was awesome, as soon as you wound it on at traffic lights it just f**ked off. A while later i had a Supercub for a few years, now i've got a Ducati 848 and i keep thinking a regular manual with some kind of anti-stall centrifugal traffic clutch thing would be perfect
Going back to another slick Honda manual gearbox is no problem for me. GSs with sub-par quickshifters is another stoneage story though .... - the waiting period on roundabouts is just not there with DCT, just throttle it as you like. I have 4 DCTs now and all work great. Tested the CB650R e-clutch and intentionally did everything wrong for a QS (shift up with no throttle and down with full throttle) and yet it was quite impressive, even if a little bit more shaky than a good DCT (and a LOT more than the near perfect shifting of the AT-DCT, even compared to my Goldwing).
Speed cameras noise cameras and pay per mile.... i think they forget that actually we run the country with our choices every 5 years... need a government that will come in and scrap the lot and go back to when times where good fast and fun!!!
As someone who has looked at getting a bike its so expensive for a new rider, costing £1000 for a test then to have to pay another £500 in 2 years. I may aswell wait and watch from a distance till then.
Lost experience is hard to value but has value. The graduated license by age is ludicrous and for ease of administration. Other sports like aviation actually log skills and experience so are realistic and safer.
Can we have a little chat about insurance... for a new bike im getting quotes of 2k plus. 9 years on a 2015 r1 and for a new r1 they want 2k. Just to expensive to insure a new bike.
You guys nailed the automatic discussion. I ride every day, all year round, in all weathers so recently picked up an NC750X DCT. For a daily rider, it's fantastic. For the weekend and touring I've got my trusty Bandit 650 and fabulous ST1100, both carbed. As Mossy says, it's horses for courses. The coffee shop poser brigade will turn up their noses of course.
Couldn't agree more on the ease of auto in cars.....that said as an Irish human who moved to the US, I had an auto for a year and a bit and went back to a manual, because they work and are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper and easier to fix. Same thing for bikes for me but with the added visceral bits ye mentioned. I've ridden DCT Hondas, brilliant tech but I can never see myself buying one tbh.
@@wobblysauce I've seen mainly teapotones video on one, great piece of tech too. But for me it's the same as the DCT, however good it is I don't need it though yano. It doesn't add anything for me and I can imagine it adds quite a bit to maintenance, which I do all of myself.
@@wobblysauce I know it does, and by all accounts it's the closest to something I would use. Again, teapotones video covered it very well imo. DCT is a good system, I liked riding with it. My point is, and I've actually covered this a few times, I am allowed to not want any form of auto anything, I personally don't think the increased cost and complexity of the tech is worthwhile for what it would add to my day to day. I ride 120 miles a day also, on a 2015 Vstrom.
I feel like Nostradamus. YEARS AGO now, I made the (easy) prediction of a softly-forced EV future, including government rations of electricity credits and a road/use tax for internal combustion engine vehicles. Nice one!
Emissions, government and insurance have combined to destroy an industry. I used to always have at least 2 bikes (a sport and a cruise) and replace 1 every couple years. That fancy new CF MOTO looking Duck cost nearly half a year salary and is $3000 dollars a year to insure. Not to mention it sounds like shyt and the exhaust is another $10 000. The numbers are insane especially considering I can only ride it 6 months a year in my climate. It's not about "people who want to work really hard to afford their favorite motor bike." It's about people who already work too hard and cant even afford the taxes on a new motorbike.
ah love you guys. And yeah my motorcycle riding has slowed down and i am selling my Busa. You covered all the relevant points. It's a sad state of affairs really. Road quality is poor, policing is too strict, costs too high.
By policing I suppose you mean speed cameras given that most chief constables have fired their former Traffic Division specialists. I'm sceptical about the camera point as they are painted yellow with white bars painted on the road so require poor observation to get photographed. IMHO removing the Traffic Division has led to a poorer standard of road use as drivers don't expect to be accountable for dangerous driving. So vulnerable road users are at greater risk which isn't acceptable. Yet again motorcyclists are forced to be better road users, which is a higher barrier to entry, so reducing the market.
I live in 🇮🇪 Republic of Ireland. Travel to uk often even if it’s only up to Northern Ireland .notice massive difference in road quality between here (Ireland, eu) and the UK. Unsure why you have it so bad, local council lack of funding?. Big brother is out of control there too. Biking here is still pleasant here, thankfully.
We have had the most rain since records began, in the past 18 months. Add cost of living to the equation. We keep being told on our industry (TV) to survive til 25.
I smashed up my left foot last year and it's looking evident that this is going to be an injury that stays with me all my life. I can change gears comfortably now, but I can see in a couple of decades it being at the point where these auto bikes will be my only option.

It’s not just the price of bikes although that is a biggy. As bikes are for many people are a second vehicle then the price of cars, which have exploded, this obviously affects people’s ability to afford bikes.
Glad you mentioned Jacob RM Al,bit disappointed with Labour so far but lets keep it about bikes.the autos are getting us used to the roll out of electric when it comes
That's just a description of getting your bike nicked which seems more probable by the day sadly, unless you like owning nothing and being happy of course.
Bikes require rider dexterity and skills in order for them to be safe in traffic or on country roads. Many people just should never be on bikes and being able to operate a clutch provides a defacto barrier of entry that keeps people that shouldn't be on bikes off of bikes. These clutchless bikes are removing that barrier of entry. While it will be less of an issue for regions of the world where learner riders are on restricted bikes there are places in the world where these restrictions don't exist and this will become a "I told you so" situation.
My guess is there will be some amazing automatics which will be like seamless shifts and ones which are utter shite. Drive a 911 with PDK and it’s amazing, why have a manual? Then drive a VW Polo with DSG and it’s crap, with a long delay pulling out of a junction.
I've owned a continuous, unbroken stream of Ducatis since my first (996) in 2001 - including the 999, and have my name down for the new Panigale V4S to arrive in the new year....... I couldn't give a monkey's uncle about the lack of single sided swingarm: if this makes it better/faster, then that is all that matters to me (seeing as mine will do at least 20 track days next year!). Roll on the Spring!!!
the reason for the e-clutch things coming out on bikes at the samr time, is because nearly all modern cars are autos, or at least the vast proportion of them are, so naturally any manufacture is going to think its what the market wants on bikes too. any pay per mile will come in eventually (gps black box controlled) because there is no fuel on electric vehicles and they'll need the revenue... which will be a cue for me to buy a jetski and commute down the canals, since they wont be able to charge for that... at least i hope
daughter has an automatic car license, always wanted a bike and played around in a field a few times, went for CBT and just couldn't get used to the geared bikes, next generation of "target audience" may well only drive auto's as EV's e.t.c. come in, so won't have the natural experience of using a clutch (or even see the point)

I feel one aspect that may be slowing sales is the integrity of motorcycle manufacturers themselves. I own a '22 KTM 1290 SAS. So far, problem free with nearly 15k miles. But KTM also have been dodging the camshaft issues with other models. Then there is Harley Davidson outsourcing to India/China. And what about WSS and MotoGP...poor performance there is got to be hurting sales for certain brands.
if you want to get back to gold on pizza express just go past one on a busy afternoon or evening and check in to any old table 😂 i got to gold while only eating there once or twice
On the economic points - I have a bike, but my riding isn’t happening anymore because I’m a casual worker and I can no longer afford to get injured - so would have to sell my house if I had a bad stack
Honestly i dont think the automatic bikes are for senior riders, but for kids who ride electric scooters, then learn to drive automatic cars and then have no ideas about gears. Im sure a new generation will not miss what they never knew? No?
Of course new bike sales figures are price related. I looked at swapping my Fireblade for the 24 model, £25k can't justify it even though I can afford it. There's a market for bikes with less redundant tech and a lower price tag, I'm certain.
Of course bikes are expensive now. They have loads of electronics on them that they never used to have. There's been decades of R&D to get them where they are now but if you looked at original prices for old bikes you'd see with inflation that new bike prices are actually on par with what they used to be and are acceptable given the amount of engineering that's gone into them. 200+bhp bikes with 6 axis imu running over square engines with lighter pistons and rods, it's expensive work. For me the used market seems totally dead, I have had a MT09 Gen 3 for sale for 3-4 months for 6850 and not one person has called me. It's a ghost town out there.
This has been mentioned a few times, yes it's true when accounted for inflation it's actually good value the issue is most of the population's salary has been stagnant in comparison so in real terms they're getting more expensive. About a decade ago a top of the line HP4 was around £18k which was shocking back then, now that's standard superbike pricing across the board despite the manufacturer.
@@bikersquest "About a decade ago a top of the line HP4 was around £18k which was shocking back then" I don't see how that is or was shocking, you want a race spec bike for the road then it's going to cost you. The P1 and La Ferrari came out in 2014, price £865k-£1M. Paying 18k for top end bike performance seems pretty cheap in comparison. I think a lot of bikers around 44t presenter ages still remember the GSXR1000 being like £9999 brand new, still holding on to days long past. Manufactures could always offer a tesco basic spec with ABS and nothing else, would people then buy 1000cc superbikes in droves again? I doubt it. Bikers were happy to accept all the goodies that trickled down from race bikes to road bikes yet seem to complain a lot about the price of the bikes. You can't have it both ways. It's not like you can't buy a decent bike for under 10k brand new, but if you want the creme de la creme then yes it will be expensive. Chris does seem to like his high end goodies, so he wants the best of the best, Fagan on the other hand you get the impression he isn't too bothered.
@@Chambers36TheEnter The point is the goal post has moved significantly when talking about bike prices relative to salaries/wages for the average person.
@@bikersquest That is your point but not mine. Mine was considering the R&D performance, tech etc in bikes they seem like good value, TO ME, regardless of how the average persons wages have stagnated. You could say a loaf of bread is expensive now or a bottle of milk if you want to look at it vs current economical climate.
The economic situation is definitely hurting everyone. I think in most Western countries, the US especially, motorcycles are mostly considered recreational vehicles. When people get stressed financially they cant afford a vehicle for recreation. I can only speak for myself in the US but I'm 22 and the *only* reason i can afford a bike is because I live with my folks and my rent is low. I dont even live in a huge expensive city, although my city is growing a lot.

The appeal of never stalling (especially on big twin or single) is especially appealing. I prefer auto cars so don't see why bikes couldn't be the same. Especially once tech is refined.
So disappointed that Chris didn't pick Rob Farquhar's stunning Silver Dream Machine after feeling like David Essex...
Al, listen to Daddy.....he says NO!
I’d rather guide my dad into my mum
The News is still my favourite 44Teeth part.
Speed cameras noise cameras and pay per mile.... i think they forget that actually we run the country with our choices every 5 years... need a government that will come in and scrap the lot and go back to when times where good fast and fun!!!
I hope you don't really believe that we run the country.
Love my country, hate my government.
Great content lads💯
Couldn't agree more on the ease of auto in cars.....that said as an Irish human who moved to the US, I had an auto for a year and a bit and went back to a manual, because they work and are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper and easier to fix. Same thing for bikes for me but with the added visceral bits ye mentioned. I've ridden DCT Hondas, brilliant tech but I can never see myself buying one tbh.
The Honda E-Clutch is quite nice, much smoother than the normal quick shifter and different from the Auto and the DCT, closer to the manual.
@@wobblysauce I've seen mainly teapotones video on one, great piece of tech too. But for me it's the same as the DCT, however good it is I don't need it though yano. It doesn't add anything for me and I can imagine it adds quite a bit to maintenance, which I do all of myself.
You might think of it that way, but it doesn't work that way... the Eclutch still has a clutch lever. DCT is closer to a Rekluse in operation.
Always look forward to bike news
I feel like Nostradamus. YEARS AGO now, I made the (easy) prediction of a softly-forced EV future, including government rations of electricity credits and a road/use tax for internal combustion engine vehicles. Nice one!
If you call this soft i'd hate to see what you're like with a hard-on comrade! 🙃
It will decimate the legacy automakers as China will offer the same range etc for half the price. EV’s are appliances.
Auto boxes have been available forever, scooters. So is this to try and get delivery riders to upgrade to something a bit more fun?

Had to ride an auto bike for work and to and from work was fantastic
I think the auto bikes would be more appealing if the manual override was still a foot lever rather than handlebar buttons
Yeah I can see the after market jumping on that immediately.
We have had the most rain since records began, in the past 18 months. Add cost of living to the equation. We keep being told on our industry (TV) to survive til 25.
Would you like to make it a proper UK thing and show it in Northern Ireland too?
I smashed up my left foot last year and it's looking evident that this is going to be an injury that stays with me all my life. I can change gears comfortably now, but I can see in a couple of decades it being at the point where these auto bikes will be my only option.
Forget the swingarm, ditch the moustache on the new V4 but I have to say the exposed frame looks far better.
Agree. The swing arm is the best looking thing on the new one 😂
The Sexy beasts are back 🎉
Cheers Nige.
27:13 it was real. I bought it for £500. I ragged its nuts off. I don’t know how I’m still alive. Believe it or not, I managed to sell it. I don’t know who was more wrong. Me for doing it or the people that bought it. Who, by the way arrived in a lick up truck in Camden and sold spank boards on eBay for a living.
I've Barely done 500 miles this Year FFS !!!! That's £110 quid wasted and that's just an annual oil l/filter service God knows how much to keep the battery monitor plugged in !!!
It’s not just the price of bikes although that is a biggy. As bikes are for many people are a second vehicle then the price of cars, which have exploded, this obviously affects people’s ability to afford bikes.
If you pay per mile will they fix the potholes?
The Last Motorcycle on Earth movie paints a grim picture.
Glad you mentioned Jacob RM Al,bit disappointed with Labour so far but lets keep it about bikes.the autos are getting us used to the roll out of electric when it comes
1st news I've watched. Loved it!
Commuting then auto seems okay. You get big CC scooters tho and seems like a step towards electric. Once the gearbox. It's just engine next.
I'm waiting for Automatic Rider. Bike can go out on its own, save me bothering 😉
That's just a description of getting your bike nicked which seems more probable by the day sadly, unless you like owning nothing and being happy of course.
@@CavalierNTX And I thought it was irony. I already own nothing. I’m married. 😉
BBB8 montage was next level ❤😍
Bikes require rider dexterity and skills in order for them to be safe in traffic or on country roads. Many people just should never be on bikes and being able to operate a clutch provides a defacto barrier of entry that keeps people that shouldn't be on bikes off of bikes.
These clutchless bikes are removing that barrier of entry. While it will be less of an issue for regions of the world where learner riders are on restricted bikes there are places in the world where these restrictions don't exist and this will become a "I told you so" situation.
8:24 Hawk Tuah hahhahahhhahah 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yes, it's the bloody news. ❤
It’s the bike insurance that is also stinging people!
Moderation of Flufftube !!!!!
Can't comment of the Stasi Police Sate UK Corporation !!!
the reason for the e-clutch things coming out on bikes at the samr time, is because nearly all modern cars are autos, or at least the vast proportion of them are, so naturally any manufacture is going to think its what the market wants on bikes too.
any pay per mile will come in eventually (gps black box controlled) because there is no fuel on electric vehicles and they'll need the revenue... which will be a cue for me to buy a jetski and commute down the canals, since they wont be able to charge for that... at least i hope
daughter has an automatic car license, always wanted a bike and played around in a field a few times, went for CBT and just couldn't get used to the geared bikes, next generation of "target audience" may well only drive auto's as EV's e.t.c. come in, so won't have the natural experience of using a clutch (or even see the point)
Love the content as always lads, however i need to ask, when is the merch getting stocked back up! everything I want always seems to be out of stock, (Neck warmer, reservoir sock, cap, and sweater mainly) 😫😫
Also If I were to make you guys something, where could I send it? only a small parcel size thing but I think you'd like it for the News desk!
Come on that swing arm is aesthetically very beautiful , yes the last version was better but this will suffice
Given the ambition for WSBK dominance the Performance will not be worse. Power to weight, and handling..
Unlike the BBC and ITV you do report as it is!

I think they'll make Electric Cars pay a road tax first.
It's coming.
On the economic points - I have a bike, but my riding isn’t happening anymore because I’m a casual worker and I can no longer afford to get injured - so would have to sell my house if I had a bad stack
That Gsxr was a real thriller.
So we’re still not kicking off about insurance in any organised way, then? Cool… 👀
WE BACK BABY!!!!!!
I've said it before. On a touringbike the auto-clutch thing might me a nice option. But on a Racebike/Nakedbike/Adventurebike... I just don't get it.
@@bikersquest "About a decade ago a top of the line HP4 was around £18k which was shocking back then"
I don't see how that is or was shocking, you want a race spec bike for the road then it's going to cost you.
Saw a new panigale this weekend at oulton park, thought the swingarm looked nice
I think the Royal Family is a bit like the single sided swing arm on the Ducati.

Yamaha's automatic thing is the obvious next step from quickshifter and blipper. The only problem it has is quickshifters and blippers are seen as racy and cool, whereas automatics aren't.
