What I like most about Al Grey's playing is that whenever he improvises all of his solos are always happy and melodic. He's definitely one of my favorite trombone players.
True story. I even love the solos he took on his last LP, when he was like a million years old. Echos of Harlem 🔥🎺💀. I hope I’m playing like when I go.
I was fortunate to do a few gigs in my home country with the wonderful Al Grey, when I was young... and a small tour with Curtis Fuller (who appears at 2:03) a few years later. Awesome memories
In Mid 80s spent a week with Al when he played in London with Buddy Tate.He showed me a Gold trombone medallion that Frank' Sinatra gave him for live at the sands Makin Whoopee solo' Went to all the gigs they played at Pizza express in Dean St that week and partied afterwards like crazy with them and UK rhythm section Tony lee etc etc ....best week of my life!!!! Sex ,Drugs ,and JAZZ!! far better than Rock n'roll Great trombone makes it truly sing......
@@fallenleavesfeedtheroots thank you yes it was a magical week two of my count Basie hero’s…I was working in Famous west end music shop and Buddy invited me to pizza express dean st then on to party at the flat they had nearby I managed to and went back a few times during the week ….didnt sell much in shop that week 🤣
Well played by Al Grey with the trombone.I never thought it could come out so beautifully with the trombone. My first choice would still be Duke Ellington Ochestra with Johnny Hodges laying with his alto sax

No one really ever thinks the trombone can sound beautiful, it's quite sad
@@estesgeorge6323 As an alto sax player myself, I actually like this version better and I wanna learn trombone because of these types of players
Perfect.
Bravo!
I am nearly there and yet this world remains a mystery to me.
1:55 moose the mooche !
Very astute observation
Nobody swung harder.
3:16 sounds like a tuba!
Why bother leaving the house at all? Just spoon some nutrients into my face from time to time.

It is hard to find a good place for afternoon tea.
Crazy
Let's see ya do that !!!!!!!!!!!
does anyone know where i can get an arrangement of this?
Man. I hear the idiot winds all of the time. I just don.t know what to do. But I like experiments. Here I go.
I tried playing the bonophone in high school band. I put out some really bad noise. Make your teeth hurt!
Bravooo olé olé olé
Norman Keenan on bass?
Is that a plumbing plunger or a purpose made plunger for the instrument?
Older style real rubber plunger with the inside rim cut off.
QÜESTIÓN......
ANSWER.....
Can anyone tell me when this was filmed? I'm thinking late '60s just because he looks like he looked then. Anyone?
It has to be after 1975. Butch Miles on drums - he didn't join until 1975.

I get very bored with the rubbish I am being fed.
You are nearly dead. What are you going to do about it?
