    Thank you guys so much for this great video! I am inspired to hike the track after watching it. It is nice to see a video from a mature couple, as I am in my 60s. 😊
    I love your filming and still photography, so beautiful and clear. ❤️
    My plan is to do the Annapurna Base Camp Trek with a local friend on Nepal 🇳🇵 once we are able to go again, but in the meantime New Zealand is a stunning playground for us!
    Getting fitter right now! 😊

    What month of the year was this? Also how tough was it, I'd like to do it when I visit in March/April 2020 but I'll be almost 70 by then! One of the best videos of this trek by the way!

    • @GeoRick
      @GeoRick  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Geraint. Thanks glad you liked it. We went on 30 March - 3 April. It was the last or second to last walk for the year. We were 65 when we went. It is hard to give advice as it all depends on you fitness level. We were not very fit and were the last in each day. The guides were very good and no one seemed to mind that we were slower than the rest. The day going over the pass was reasonably difficult the path zigzags up and its not too bad. The downward path has lots of steps and its hard on your joints. We trained before going walking for a total of about 100 hours much of it up and down hills. We did a few 20km walks. As we had a very light pack (under 7kgs) good boots and walking poles we found it hard but enjoyable. The walking poles made it much easier and I think they are essential. The only other advice I would give is to have a very good rain jacket, top quality GoreTex. Would love to hear about your trip when you make the walk. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to get in contact.

      I did the trek in November/December 2018 (I am 63) - four days of fantastic dry weather - although there was a thick cloud at Mackinnon Pass that cleared within half an hour to reveal the fabulous views - it is worth getting there early so you have time to wait if the cloud is down. The main issue for us was Sand Flies - especially from the pass to Milford - they bite if you stand still! There are two ways to walk - on the guided walk as in the video (guides, soft beds, food and showers) or independent (like me) where you carry all your food, rubbish, cooking utensils, clothes for wet, dry, hot and cold weather, sleeping bag and share huts with others on bunks or the floor. You have flushing toilets and fresh (rain, river) water and gas to cook by - washing? if you have to its the river (but no soap etc). I have no doubt both options have their plus and minus - you don't really need a guide if you have confidence in your ability to walk up to 12 miles in a day. There is no need to rush, a slow pace will get you there in ample time. You miss so much if you hurry. The independent option was an unusual experience for me - not one I would naturally choose and I longed for a soft bed and shower and decent food - but that said the camaraderie and shared experience with a group of 39 others from around the world will not be bettered and that dip in the clear, sweet, freezing river water after a days hiking will never be forgotten. Take hundreds of photos and make sure you have plenty of batteries in the camera. I doubt I will ever walk the track again but I will never forget it, or the people with whom I shared that experience.
