Well done, once again, as always. (It sounds like the choral society in question might have been more accustomed Gilbert and Sullivan - "See how the Fates their gifts allot, For A is happy - B is not. Yet B is worthy, I dare say, Of more prosperity than A." ) -- AND "the mitten" is referred to, not infrequently, in the works of P.G. Wodehouse. Apparently, it was often the custom in days gone by for the groom to give his bride gloves (or "mittens") as a wedding gift, AND if she broke off the engagement ("showed him the gate" / "sent him packing" / "returned him to store") she would return ONE of the "mittens" (THE "mitten") to indicate that "all is over" (and this also prevented him from having the full pair of mittens, so he would need to buy another pair of gloves for her successor, instead of being able to use the same pair time after time.)
