The best vid I've found about DIY marked cards. I'm just a new magician and I love to be able to read the cards in a pinch. Many Thanks.

That last deck is rather robust! no doubt it took an afternoon. I made my own with the basic clock/petal structure, but I very well may have to go for the mixed approach of the 'reader' deck.
Very impressive, thank you for the education!

Great content. I've found that any time I perform with a deck that doesn't look like a Bicycle deck, people assume it's a 'trick' deck (marked/stripper). So I've been considering making my own but didn't really want to learn all the lessons the hard way. I was going to steer away from Readers, I assumed people would see the markings, but now I don't think I need to. Thanks for sharing!

Almost everybody looking for jumping marks will riffle the upper left, but some decks get around that threat by marking the lower left corners. Marks won't show in a clockwise fan but will show in a counterclockwise fan or right-to-left spread, assuming both ends are marked.

If you never heard the Bicycle clock marking, the video starts at 8:30. If you don’t need to go over that, start with the etching at about 16:00. Sorry but I can’t help you after that

Interesting stuff. I've always maintained that a diy marked deck outshines any bought reader deck, simply for stealth and the cards are so familiar that no one suspects. I use a different system, i found it onlune when i first started a few years back. Not sure of the name but the markings are done kind of in between the pattern, if you understand? I can find out the name of the system if you want. I have a booklet somewhere that I printed off.

The cards are always marked directly in the pattern, between the pattern or the pattern itself, which has small irregularities. Unfortunately, all these designs are quickly detectable with just a finger (thumb - animation), because the mark must be on the edge so that the magician can read it, for example, from a fan. The code then becomes irrelevant - the magician or player loses credibility. In addition, amateur sophisticated code marks do not provide immediate reading and usually disappoint their owner with poor execution and unnecessary complexity. There are special cards called "rozpité" (I don't know the English equivalent). It is a special color print of several colors, which can be checked by swiping your finger (animation). The pattern changes slightly chaotically over the entire surface. It is not possible to assign a pattern to a specific card, even if you compare them with each other. However, if you accommodate your eyes to a distance greater than that of the card, the card character (3D) will appear. The amateur does not know it even after careful inspection. Some professional magicians also do not know if they do not know it and can perform "animation" tests without results. If you want to have an undetectable way of marking, it is necessary to include the entire area of the card and make it unique for each card. Reading must not be limited to one place which would be revealed by an animation test.

Even with the basic clock ppl can’t tell what’s going on I tried it out on 6 ppl I told them the top card is so and so card rank and suit revealed the card and not once did they see the marks.

@earth56 no, I didn't create a key. Honestly, when it comes to readers (or any mark system), the best design is the one that you create.

I only dabble with magic now and again. I knew of the code system. I wonder about the reader method though. I don't know if I just got lucky but I spotted it almost immediately when you picked up the deck. But it might be like you said. If the person is familiar with the brand and is really looking, they'll find it no matter what the system.

    • @thecommonmagician

You got lucky... Which can rarely happen with any marking system.

Thanks. I was leaning towards that as well, about getting lucky. I am currently making a set of readers. Just playing around to see if I can come up with a different way to mark them. I do like how easy "readers" make it to know your card.
