We have a 62lb thrust Newport. I noticed at full power for a period of time the motor shuts off. I thought maybe it was my kid operating it wrong or a bad plug connecter I made. I never thought of it overheating until you mentioned it.

Brushless motors are better at the slowest speed. You never have to change the brushes. JB has the best trolling motor/Jon boat episode. I skipped right over electrics to my Tomking TK144FC four cycle air cooled. I substituted light clutch springs to troll and it burns 7 Oz of gas an hour, trolling. A hand finish will help the aluminum prop. Many Jon boats put the trolling motor on the bow.

I actually have 8 minn Kota enduros. 7 are 40# trust and 1 is a 30#. All bought at our local Walmarts and several were on sale. Mine are all the earlier models without the optimizer. All of them were in perfect shape. I have hooked them up in ways not recommended. So glad they are not brushless design.

I have the 50 pound thrust model from MinKota. It is quiet and pushes the boat along just fine. I have a 14 foot Springbok for fishing. The only thing that I don’t like about it is that when trying to dock the boat and when you shut the motor thrust off there is no steering as there is a minimal skeg.

Yeah I find I need to switch it on and off constantly at the boat ramp - but much better than my 2.5 gas that has no neutral.

At least years ago, the speed controller is cheaper trolling motors was the problem. They would use as many amps on low as they did on high. The pricer ones used a better, more efficient speed controller. Is that still the case now? I know electronics have got cheaper so maybe not. But to me, efficiency is much more important than speed on a trolling motor. I want to get a full day in an back to the dock on one battery more than I want to troll a half mile an hour faster.

Brushless motors are more electrically efficient, and a bit more quiet. If you're going to use that motor in brackish water, put a sacrificial anode on it or electrolysis will eat the case/skeg. They're available at marine supply houses; just drill a hole through the skeg and mount it to protect the motor. For whatever it's worth, I've had Minn Kota motors since 1978, they are great and the customer service has be excellent.

I bought a Min Kota 50 lb thrust for a 1300lb boat. The damn thing kept blowing the breaker if it was fighting even the slightest breeze. I had it hooked up right I made sure but it wouldn't stay running and kept blowing the 60 amp breaker. Gave it away when I sold my old boat.

Thanks for your review. I recently purchased the same motor and had the same problem that was also resolved(?) with sandpaper. Pretty discouraging.
FYI: I'm using mine on a 14 ft Hornbeck pack canoe that weighs 25 lbs. I also have a 24lb Watersnake which propels the canoe at 4.4 mph drawing about 18amps. The Minn Kota almost matches that speed, 4.2mph, but draws 25 amps in the process. Perhaps the prop is still rubbing? Why did I get the Minn Kota? I wanted a weedless prop which unfortunately is not offered with the 24lb Watersnake. I've ran my Watersnake for an hour straight at top speed with no problems.

Wow that's discouraging to hear you had the same problem! That's very interesting about the Watersnake drawing less current and going faster.

The one I had worked fine but also had some vibration and noise. After about a year I hit some rocks and had to get a replacement prop. It still has some noise but the vibration went away.

25 cents difference between a 30lb minn kota and a newport 36lb trolling motor and think the newport is rated for saltwater use....newport has recently dominated in basic trolling motors , kayak motors and electric outboard motors

$99 for the made up this week name motors that also came off the same line as the Kota...or last year's run after Kota demanded a design modification.
The generic short lived name is sometimes made of offlots. Lots with more than say 15% visual errors...whole lot is auctioned off for nearly nothing...then sold on Temu, Wish, Ali, eBay or Amz....till they're out of stock. Often the profit is in the shipping fee.
If you're willing to take it apart, fix the casting or wiring mistakes, and put it back together...you might get the same motor.
Sucks when the name brand box has some miscast parts or untrimmed flashing like this prop.
