    Nice video thank you. Rooting compound is just a sugar syrup basically. It seals the end and gives the plant sugar which tells it to grow roots. I haven't done a side by side comparison but I've had 100% success using natural honey, which can't be bad.

  • @rcfnc

    Wow, we are not professional blueberry growers but we have always just taken the shoots growing up at the base and transplanted them to pots. Sometimes they grow and sometimes they don't. We only do this if someone wants a bush. We need to prune ours a lot since we have so many berries. We give most of ours away since we can only freeze so many . I am in NC too.

    I hate too many rules. That's why I do plants. They don't complain or talk back.
    I watched several videos, yours has the best info and explanation so far.
    BTW, I don't use rooting hormone and get 50% success.

    • @ncfruitgrower

      Some growers use hormones, make sure if you decide to use some, get the approved variety for food consumption.
      Than you for your feedback

    Hormex rooting powder is ideal for use with food producing plants like tomatoes, oranges, apples, blueberry's, etc. Also you can use raw honey which works great for any cutting. I use the honey on my rose clippings

    how do you care for these through the winter. not everyone has a greenhouse. We live in upstate ny where temp can get down to 20 below. I do have a large heated garage, do I keep them in there? Do I mist them throughout the winter. Please tell me about caring for them where I live

    • @ncfruitgrower
      @ncfruitgrower  10 лет назад

      Thanks for asking. You can make a simple greenhouse out of white plastic and posts. Our nursery is not heated. We do shut off our water after the cuttings develop roots, the greenhouse just keeps the heavy winds off the plants, but they do go through winter as outside plants. We go down to zero here, I know dormant plants can stand that, but not blooming plants. Hope this helps. James

    • @jksatte
      @jksatte 10 лет назад

      ncfruitgrower
      Don't they need light even though dormant? You have to accommodate for the lack of light in the garage.

    • @ncfruitgrower
      @ncfruitgrower  10 лет назад +1

      It is not the light they need, just the heat from the light. They will need light when they are planted outside. Thanks for asking. James

      I do not know why the reply did not post, however you can root cuttings in or out of the sun, you can cover the rootings with something to hold in the moisture. They do not have to be 1 inch apart, they can be further, bu if you root a lot of cuttings, you will need a large box, keeping the air around the stem cool. we just do this way because it has worked for us for years. Thanks for watching our video.

    How long do blueberry cuttings take to root ? And how do you tell if the cutting has died ?in the Southern Hemisphere does it matter to take the cutting currently in May in it's cutting success rate?

    • @ncfruitgrower
      @ncfruitgrower  9 лет назад +2

      I have found that it takes about 6 weeks to form roots. If the cuttings wilt or turn black, they are dead or dying. We have about a 75% growth rate. Best cuttings are taken early morning during the first of August. Thanks for watching our video.

      I have found that cuttings grow best when started the first week in November (Australia). It takes about 3 months to see any root growth while misting constantly. Use good potting mixed with 40% river sand.Best results are not to replant from the grow pot until about 5 months. you can put about 5 cuttings in each pot and seperate later. Some might die while repotting. Coffs Harbour

    • @ncfruitgrower
      @ncfruitgrower  8 лет назад +1

      Good morning Marlene, GREAT question. Here is how it works. The main
      plant will grow each year. Yes, that is old growth. However, new shoots
      will form from the main branches and produce berries. Each plant will
      form berry clusters, starting around May. Every week a new cluster will
      form from the main branches. The branches that formed the first, second,
      third and so on shoots will reverse the process the following year. Not
      the shoots, but the main branch. That is why you prune and remove the
      last year twigs. Feel free to contact me at 252-532-6951. Thanks for
      watching our videos. James

    It would of been nice to see the cuttings growing after they had successfully rooted instead of just abruptly ending the video, especially as I have just started growing blueberries.

      Thank you for watching. There is a video showing the potting of our cuttings from rootings. Unfortunately, the time frame is approx. 6-8 months. Look for our potting 2014 cuttings in 2015. Thank you. We have a video of our 2016 cuttings rooted and being potted in 2017 also.

    There is a product that works just as well as a rooting hormone and is more natural it's called Azos by Extreme Gardening. It is a beneficial bacteria (Azospirillum brasilense)

    Why? Why do you ask why about rooting hormone? Probably it is the same reason I ask why. I think the Scientific community needs to provide that answer. Not the "Organic" sales job community. To root a plant with the aid of Indole-3-butyric acid hormone that takes two years to produce a small amount of fruit that may or may not be consumed ???? Hello!!
