  • If you want to grow blueberries in Florida - especially North/Central Florida, this video is for you. Bill Hall shares how to grow blueberries in Florida, as we visit his blueberry u-pick.
Growing blueberries in Florida isn't as hard as you might think, provided you grow the right varieties and give them care. In this video, my friend Bill Hall of B & G Blueberries in Ft. McCoy, Florida, shares his experience with blueberry varieties for Florida, blueberry irrigation, keeping blueberries safe from deer, rabbiteye blueberries, Southern Highbush varieties, and running a blueberry u-pick with rabbiteye varieties.

My grandmother used to have blueberry bushes that were over 100 years old the house she lived in was built in exactly 1900 in fact it was the old Rosewood house. They were there when she bought the house in 1970s I really wish I got a couple of those before she sold it. But I wasn't into the gardening thing back then. They would sprot new branches from the roots you constantly had to cut them down or they would take up the whole yard and that soil was straight sand and they loved it and they produced a lot. Oh man the more I talk about it the more depressed it makes me. Kicking myself right now.

I live Florida in zone 9b and we get less chill hours than the Ocala area. 200/ year, no more than 300 if we have an exceptionally cold winter. So I thought southern highbush would be better for my area, because they seem to require less chill hours than rabbiteye.
    Is that correct?

Great video for FL!! It all depends on the area you live in. In zone 7B Arkansas classic Rabbiteyes are way better than any Southern Highbush. They produce more here and can easily live 40+ years. While I believe in So California Southern Highbush is better.

Thanks for the video! Have you managed to grow good crops of organic blueberries in Florida and in the tropics, David? I'm in a swamp in southern coastal SC, which is pretty much north Florida climate, and I've always had bad luck with blueberries, maybe its the heat and humidity and all the flooding. I'm having slightly better luck now using fabric pots and pine needles in the container mix. Should I grow Rabbit-eye or Southern Highbush? I'm not sure which varieties I have now. Thanks for the blueberry information David! Cheers!

It's been very successful so far. I couldn't find any more last year so I ended up buying 8 that are labeled "assorted blueberries". I know it wasn't the most wise decision. I have them potted for now in a different area of our food forest. Is there a way to tell what kind they are? 6 of the 8 have a generous harvest on them already and they are rather small yet. Thank you for any info!
