    Swap the stock frail Rods for forged on the 06A and you are good for up to 500hp. But as ive encountered personally and with others the sweet spot is around 300hp to 400hp unless you enjoy lots of tire smoke. You could throw in some cams and tuning to change the tq curve to higher then stock but you still wont have traction in the lower gears. Most people dont have the money to spend on a daily with almost 400hp basrely 300hp so understand modding a 1.8t aint like slapping a turbo on a k20 or k24. You could do a comlete honda K swap and turbo and still have money left over for the same money you'd spend on just a good turbo for your dub.

      K20s are megger money to modify compared to a 1.8 20v
      You can't get a cheaper engine to go for big power than a 1.8 20v as its been proven for decades and try making over 1000 hp with ya k20 without modifying absolutely everything and spending 10s of thousands when a lot of the standard components on the 1.8 20vs can take over 1000hp as they are because they were built to be a strong turbocharged engine from the start way back in the late 80s.
      And power for power a 1.8 20v will always outperform what it puts on paper and be faster as it's been proven again and again

      for 300 you won't need rods, but it wont hurt to upgrade them, i also recommend putting on exhaust valves and a manual tensioner

    I just swaped 1.8T AEB 5MT to my 1.8 FWD B5.
    What's is recommend for upgrade to around 220 HP?
    I prefer more torque as I do not drive that fast, usually less than 170 km/h.
    Just want some power for over taking
    Should I remap, change air filter & intercooler? Or should I change to K03s turbo?

    I've read several places that variable valve timing on the 1.8T is only used to reduce emissions right after startup, and that it has nothing to do with increasing power output or altering the powerband in anyway once the engine is up to operating temperature. I think you might be applying general knowledge about VVT to this engine, where it actually doesn't apply.

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  7 месяцев назад +1

      As far as I understand it depends on which engine, generally speaking the Audi cam timing works all the time and affects power whereas VW only seems to kick in on warm up.
      I should also have explained better it is cam timing, not the valve timing you might associate with VTEC or similar setups.
      I was not aware it was commonly only on warm up with VW engines, I had assumed the different brands worked in similar ways, trust VAG eh!

    A real minefiedl then.. I've got a BEX in my Audi A4 1.8T 190 FWD. Comes with the K03s. I've never found out if it has forged internals, but it's been mapped to around 225BHP stock. Interesting video, thanks!

      From what i know only BAM and another one which i don't remember have forged internals. The BEX does not have them. Basically engines used in s3 and TT have them. Some Cupra's might have them too

    Man, first sentence of the video and I feel like a dinosaur. “Quite an early engine from Volkswagen”. I still view the 1.8T as “modern tech”. When that engine came out in America I had just finished building a 2.0L 8V turbo and was happy I made 300+ WHP with SDS EFI. Then this thing came out and all it needed was a turbo and a tune and it made those numbers with ease. Then every 20 year old had one … ahhhh memories …

    Here in Brazil we have cars using this engine with 1400whp. Limits? good joke 😂
    However, with original parts it is best to leave it at 300hp, the engine can handle 400hp, but the transmission can only handle a maximum of 350hp.

    • @nathansutherland892
      @nathansutherland892 2 дня назад

      There are original high milage engines making over 600 and 700hp with the original gearbox so don't no where u got from but fully built yes they can handle over 1000hp quite easily

    oh man ive been trying to find out if my car has a k03s it is a 2000 a4 b5 1.8tqs (AJL 180hp) id read the tag but its so hard to get to hahaha, just trying to figure out if a k04 is worth the spend before i stage 1 it (there are some maps for stage 1 k04 or with dump and intercooler only). Can anyone confirm!?
    None the less, Much appreciate the knowle3dge ive found a lot of incorrect info since i got the car a year ago, guessing because there are so many slight variants of a very old long used block, but your site has been very helpful, and this channel too obvs :P Thanks my man! appreciate your efforts

    I have a Clio 172 cup fitted with an AUQ, with forge sump, K04 turbo S3 injectors with badger5 TIP, ram air filter, Albrighton fuel pump running around 260-290bhp will get it on rollers soon. It’s very quick as Clio only weighs around 960kgs with full cage so is my fun and trackday car. Runs 3inch system into a ktec racing back box so isn’t to loud for Trackdays. Also has a quaife and newly built box as is fwd. I love it

      Yes they are very good blocks, with the Quattro you can really get some decent power out of those and actually use it. Turbo upgrade and remap are the big power adders on those.

    I got a real cheap engine for my build that jumped time. It was out of an 04 A4 but didn't have any marking on the head, I have a 99 parts car that didn't have any marking either but the trunk sticker said AEB. How would I know if I have a forged crank or pistons? I'm only going for 400-450hp, mainly I want to see 8000-8500rpm and 28-30psi. What ever hp that makes on a gt28 I'll be happy with, it's going into a FWD B5 A4.

    • @Country-r8c
      @Country-r8c Год назад

      The code is on the block not the head. You don’t really have to worry about the crank at that power level. The rods are the weak point. You will want forged rods. You should be okay to reuse the stock pistons at that power though.

  • @renzohey755
    @renzohey755 6 месяцев назад

    The rods of any 1.8t block can not handle more than +-350hp so 600 will definitely let you end up with a kicked/bend rod

      Why is there loads of standard 1.8 20vs running over 600hp then and early agu engines running over 700. Hp doesn't affect rods its the torque delivery

    • @Borgle
      @Borgle 7 месяцев назад

      every 1.8t block is interchangeable with the exception of keeping the timing belt system to match the block, transverse blocks can be swapped into longitudinal cars such as a jetta or gti to a a4, but the topend accessorries and turbo need to be kept from original car to mount properly and the transverse i believe has a output shaft bearing or a bearing of somesort cant remember exactly.
