Great explanation on the "thirds" model for knowing when our tanks need pumping and cleaning. I think anyone that doesn't use an effluent filter in out of their mind. Thanks for sharing such good information on septic tank assessment and cleaning.
clean the effluent filter annually when you check your levels, an ounce of prevention to save $15 grand for a new system, or worse if your township won't permit another in the same location and you have no second options, $30k for a sand mound. you must maintain this system.
Thanks for the explanation. Seems you didn’t get to pump anything in this tank! I hope it was still worth your time making a video for all of us curious parties
Your effluent filter is on the outlet side of the tank. You should be checking the inlet side which is where the sludge settles and gets pumped from. Very little sludge gets to the outlet side, so this is why you felt little to nothing.
A sludge judge is more effective than a stick....you can actually see the level of sludge, clear zone and scum. You should have also checked the inlet side of the tank to compare the two.
Nice video but as a homeowner, please do not wait 3 to 5 years to have your tank pumped or until the solids comprise over 1/3 of the total volume of the tank. It is like changing the oil in your car. You can't have it done too often but if you go to long between service you'll get into trouble later. Not to mention what a pain it is for the pumper to clean out a tank packed with solids. Soaps especially reform and become like concrete. Best- Tom Cossentino Septic Baltimore, MD
ps, drain your tank every 2-3years unless you have a outlet filter , with a filter it allows just water to pass to the field,in that case pump it 3-5 yrs ,.
it is fine, but leaving lids exposed helps for service if it is not in a lawn you need to use, have to cover with 3-6" of soil or more to grow turf over them, every 3 years or so service requires uncovering, could place tarp for soil and save turf to re-use, just water through dry times till re-established
please always hire a professional inspector ALWAYS! he missed a lot of critical steps on a inspection, you absolutely NEVER inspect the tank for sludge on the outlet compartment and so on.... big mistake!
Think he got some scum on his fingers and then touched the lens before recording. So what you are looking through is just a little 💩 that’s preventing the focus here. 😂
As a Septic & Sewer Professional with 2 decades of experience, my suggestion or recommendation to all homeowners with a Septic System is very simple... just be proactive when it comes to Septic Tank maintenance, and plan on pumping annually or bi-annually depending on the number of people living in your house, and the size of your Septic Tank. In my opinion, you shouldn't worry about the sludge or scum layer, because if you pump out the tank every couple of years, you'll never get to the levels of sludge and/or scum this guy is talking about in this video. To be clear, pumping your Septic Tank is not very expensive compared to the cost of replacing your entire Septic System. In fact, it's cheap insurance, and it will give you piece of mind, so you don't have to worry. Again, don't wait until you have a problem, when annual or bi-annual service can prevent problems, and it only cost a few hundred dollars.
Susan Wyse Yes he does. Actually in this case an anaerobic digestion plant is better than this. As you get an usable outputs. It's used all throughout the world but in the US and Europe.
Learn more with this video than all the others peddling a product thank you!!!!

Thanks for posting this very helpful video! Now I consider myself educated on the matter.
Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge!!
Thank you for this I heard about checking the sludge or the top layer degree. So info on checking both is helpful...
Great explanation/demonstration. Very clever yet simple 2X4 trick.
Thank you very much for sharing great information !!
very well explained, thank you
Great video - Very informative.
Thank you.
When determining the sludge content in a 2 compartment septic tank you need to do it from the inlet side of the tank.

excellent video. very informative

Great Video, Thanx.

Yep, a lot of these youtube video experts don't know what they're doing.
Ok, so the next question is how often should you clean the sludge off the camera lens?
I don't even have a house but it's good to know.
A) wood absorbs moisture, in this case-shit.
B) a garden hose in contact with waste will not contaminate your well. Just your hose.
good video thank you

THANK YOU
I also work septic, and checking the second compartment of a system is not ideal for gauging your pumping. The zabel
can some one plz plz tell me after that how your supposed to fix it because mine is meesed up how do you fix it plz help.
Thanks
I just use my leg to measure
Filter is always in a secondary effluent tank.

Oh damn that’s a big septic can tell by filter

thanks for that important clarification!!
You would.
check your focus
Camera is out of focus.
Glad you were here to let us all know about that. Pretty sure nobody would ever have noticed otherwise.
thanks for the vid. I had this on and wasn't looking at the screen. I noticed that you have an accent like Kermit the Frog
How can you do that without nose plugs or some kind of surgical mask? It must smell absolutely terrible.
Looks loke he is trying to figure out how to take those gloves off without touching his skin..
Is it ok to completely cover the septic tank covers? Looks like the lids were buried

You should not pull the filter out until you have pumped the tank because you don't want unfiltered sewage going into your drain field.
Dude kinda sounds like Kermit the Frog
Travis B LMBO he does. I noticed after reading your comment.
Probably from huffing methane gas over the years.
I wouldnt have even mentioned baby wipes. I wonder how many people think it's ok to flush them now that you mentioned them.

@Corey Lambrecht
@ 4:56 he starts discussing the "effluent filter" that's the discharge of the tank.
