Sea otters can eat up to 75 mussels per hour. To crack open hard-shelled prey, the otters smash them on stone anvils. Using archaeology, a new study looks at otter tool use and the debris left behind.

Wild sea otters habitually crack open mussels by smashing them on stationary stones, making them one of the few animals that use tools. To learn more, you can read on here: on.natgeo.com/2FIft2O

I saw one at Jeffreys Bay mid December....running out of the water to catch something on the beach...could be a bird. I was shocked..it looked like a pitch black leopard to me. "How can a 4 legged animal roun out on the beach and then go back into the water? And for a long time he was swimming just near the guys with their surf boards. I saw his black head for quit some time. I did not really see webbed feet. It had longer legs than I could imagine..and the tail was not obviously thick. I looked up photos..but they all look fatter..light colour heads...thicher tails..shorter legs. I could not believe my eyes!! Tried to take a photo but was too late..and in the water.the head did not show up clearly
