I would highly recommend How to Train your Dragon. Tons of heart, great music and animation, and also a really touching story

The flying theme always makes me emotional to the point of tears. No idea why.
I would argue that Despicable Me is a kids movie while The Lego Movie is more of a family movie. Those two genres tend to have a lot of overlap but are distinct genres in themselves.
I think the reason Minions are so popular is that they're free from any expectation to make sense or be polite, competent, or responsible. Especially in the _Minions_ movie, they have a way of winning the day without any real effort; the plot just sort of happens to them and everything turns out for the best. A lot of people subconsciously wish life was like that.
There is that, and also this. The fact that although the Minions are a character collectively and look nearly identical, they also have their own individual personalities.
My favorite is Dave, the minion who gets so excited he shoots his rocket launcher into the other minions. He loves that rocket launcher.

This is one of those films where it's "turn your brain off" entertaining, and ultimately kids enjoy it far more than adults. We were INCREDIBLY fortunate that our girls were obsessed with "MegaMind" instead, which if you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend checking it out.
For me, I think it's the story of Gru and the three girls that drew me in. But I also just find the Minions hilarious in a very basic, very silly sort of way. And humor can be really subjective that way.
The minions are either hated or loved. No in between really with most people. I personally love them and despite being in my 40s, have Minions merch.
Emily might like Megamind more as it was geared towards teens more than children.
I was thinking the same thing. It plays more with the familiar tropes of the pre-MCU superhero genre.
I assumed they'd seen that. Oh, they need to.
The minions are great.
I saw this for the first time when I was 50, so I wasn't a kid. I loved it. There is a sarcastic humor in the Lego Movie that is different, but this certainly has humor and story points aimed at adults. If Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly had done this same script as a live action movie it would be seen as a great comedy.
I love the Despicable Me movies. I think they're some of the best animated movies. Steve Carrell was so good as Gru :)
Just adorable - the film and the two of you :-) The sisters are super cute. Box of shame always gets me! About 20 years ago when I was a recruiter, I went to a prospective client (a loan company) and in their foyer was a beautiful painting of a tree with photos of the staff. How nice, I thought, until the receptionist told me it was a tree of shame and anyone who left the company went up on the wall. Staff had to walk past it every day. No joke. Thankfully a couple of years later the firm went broke - turns out there is such a thing as karma after all!

In 2007, I managed to be adopted by 2 kittens. The ex would order his "minions" about as if he were Hedley Lamarr. His niece, 5 at the time, asked, "What's a minion?"
Then this movie happened.
I've always thought that Minions were Twinkies on helium.
the reason Gru didn't freeze ray the cashier is because she works in customer service and that's an even worse punishment.
Here in Mexico almost every single animated movie is projected Spanish dubbed, and usually the actors make an incredible work, adapting the dialogs for the Latino audience... But in the case of Gru's voice, I can't tolerate the Mexican comedian and since I bought the dvd I always play it in the original language - Steve Carrell did an amazing performance. Greetings, folks.
After watching the crazy part where Ram Charan hits the Tiger in RRR I always have to think about the parkour scene with the shark from "Despicable me" 😉 SS Rajamouli did it justice ❤️
"Despicable me" is not just a kids movie and I do love it. I'm never bored with this film even after rewatching it for about 8 times. Maybe this is the kid in my 64 year old body. For me this film is an 8.5 🤗 and I'm shocked that you don't even gave it a 7 😭

I was somewhat disappointed when the Statue Of Liberty he stole was from Las Vegas rather than Paris.
The thing with the minions was that they were a big part of the marketing, there are quite a lot of short videos with them playing tricks on each other etc, things that arent in the movie. So a lot of people already liked them before they ever saw the film. I also think the fact that the minions are so different helped, tall or short, one eye or two, glasses or not and so on theres one or more to identify with.
Is it a great movie? Absolutely not. Is it a good movie, yes... depending on your age and personal preferences. I think 6 is a little harsh, but maybe my age (mentally at least) is nearer the target demographic. Having said that, I would still rate it between a 7 and an 8 at most, depending on mood.
I thought the minions were adorable. I think you have to separate it from movies like The Lego Movie, but on the whole this is a great series.
I thought I was losing my mind. I looked down at my dinner, and when I looked up, Emily's hair was different.
This movie is a weird case where it alternates between being better and worse each time I see it. Like if I sit down thinking "This was good, I'm going to enjoy it", I see more of the flaws and don't have a good time, and then the next time I watch it expecting to have a "meh" experience I end up having a good time and seeing its strengths.

I wonder if maybe the oversaturation of things from this movie in Pop Culture affected your enjoyment of it. When I saw it the first time, the stuff wasn't EVERYWHERE, yet. So I thoroughly enjoyed it. The fact that I was still in my 20s may have also played a part, though.
I'm half-Asian so of course I had that exact same hairicut as a kid, Emily. So I feel your pain. lmao
Born in 1959 and on my first day in school (1965) we had first grad pictures taken and I looked exactly like this with the haircut and glasses. My sister did too 5 years later without the glasses. So did my cousins daughter and son at that age in the 1980s. I think this has been a popular haircut around the world for a long time. I have pictures from my parents from the early 1930s/40s and they had a haircut like this also.

I love this movie, but I also know what you mean. Lego Movie is one I could easily have playing in the background while doing other stuff. Despicable Me is the one you watch and just want others to have that experience. But you don't necessarily want to watch it a lot. But this movie has a special place for me as it was the first gift I bought for my sister's kids for Christmas. The oldest is now 16 and we still reference this movie while talking. "It's so fluffy!" "Oh poop." "In terms of money... we have no money."
If you haven't seen it I would recommend Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog. It's the more adult version of a super villain as a musical. Though musicals can be hard to do on RUclips due to copyright. But it's very short.
If you want to see a much better animated villain movie, add Megamind to your list. It stars Will Ferrell as Megamind and has an a list cast including Tina Fae, Brad Pitt, David Cross, Jonah Hill, and there is only one minion. 😉

The kids make this movie. Carrel is great, but the kids steal it. Maybe its the parent in me now? Its still fun.
Kids really connected with the minions which is why they took off. This movie is decent, but I think it unfairly overshadowed Megamind which came out the same time. Megamind I'd say is way better for adults
The sequels have way more adult joke in them...especially the 3rd one, Trey Parker from South Park is the villain.
Megamind is more mature, and has a genuinely scary villain

I think that you missed a number of the adult jokes that were more obvious when the movie came out. Vector was a parody of Bill Gates. Vector's father was based on the "Pointy Hair Boss" in the very popular (at the time) Dilbert comic strip. The newscaster was a parody of David Muir. Of course the Asian lab was in North Korea. Maybe I liked it because Gru was a pitch perfect parody of my boss at the time. Of the many Minon movies, I think the second is the best.

I always considered Minions to be the day to day goofy street level bad guy enforcers of some corrupt company or group. The mumbling and bumbling reminds me of it and I laugh. It’s not for everyone.

not that anyone cares one year on but i am very surprised at your luke-warm reaction to this. i 'dont do' kids movies and would have been early 40's when this came out. i loved it. fantastic movie with great humour and a heartwarming tale of these kids finding a home and a new Dad. maybe as one half of a childless couple (not through choice) it drew me in more. perhaps thats the diff. but i also found the humour to be very appealing, not just for kids.

The fact I know some minions by name is a good sign my life has gone wrong somewhere.
The next movies after this one get MUCH better.
I would love to see reactions to animated movies such as the so-called "The Irish Folklore Trilogy" or Mamoru Hosodas "The Boy and The Beast" and "Wolf Children".

I enjoyed this movie a little more, I think, because I saw it _before_ it was massively overhyped and the Minions completely saturated the media landscape through relentless over-merchandising. Hence my expectations weren't too high and were met quite satisfactorily.

I had a similar opinion when I first watched this movie. Re-watching it with you, I actually enjoyed it more. I actually liked this originally unlike the Lego movie you mentioned. At the end of that, I was like, can I get my time back I wasted from watching it?

Saw this in the theater when it came out and my sons were 5 & 8. I enjoyed it at the time and still think it’s a good movie but it may have been hurt by bad sequels and Minion memes all over the internet.
My wife and I enjoy these movies and while I don't normally like kristen wiig she's actually tolerable in these

You're dead to me. Nah I can see your point but this movie in fact the whole franchise is a guilty pleasure. I think it works because it's at it's heart a heist movie and I love heist movies and it is relaxing to watch because it's not all full of double entendres. There are time I just want funny and nice and these movies fill that slot. It should be noted they do get a little more adult in some of the other movies

I'm with Emily, I've never really cherished this movie, and I can't understand what the deal with the minions is. I do appreciate, though, that the two-eyed ones are a spitting image of an old colleague of mine!
As others have suggested as well, I'd recommend Megamind. I thought it was gonna be a copypaste of this movie, but I really did enjoy that one!
