Hi! Turns out Digimon Dreamers DOES have human translation and this online manga is super fun! Please ignore everything in the back half of the video about how I predicted it would be machine translated. This is a pleasant surprise :)
There's currently a popular JoJo fan translation that uses deliberately bad machine translation so honestly as someone who cares very little about Dreamers I hope it is machine translated solely for all the funny screencaps we can post on Twitter. On a serious note Bandai Namco needs to do FAR better by non-Japanese speakers, especially when fans are picking up their slack (Seekers, manga, etc) for completely free. Just pay those people and release their work officially!
Yeah, I'm a sucker for printed media, so when I read "a new Digimon Manga" I thought, "hey, I can finally add to the Adventure, Adventure 02 and Tamers Manga I've had for years", then he said it's free and then it was the same place as Seekers and, well... (Also, not surprised to see you here, actually!)
What makes it funnier is that Gundam Witch From Mercury has pretty much perfect English writing every time it shows up, and it shows up a lot, as all in-universe written text is in English. Still, might be a bit sad that Digimon has fallen so bad that Bandai considers Gundam to be higher priority for overseas.
@@Boltscrap It's not that unusual in Japanese media, it was everywhere in Dragonball Z, like in the fourth movie, General Slug, there was a shopping plaza and shops with signs written in English as well as Vegeta's "Bad Man" shirt, as well as "Kame House" written in big bold letters on the front of Muten Roshi's house, as well as the Red Ribbon Army's and Capsule Corporation's logos!
@@aetherland1883 No, that's dumb. It is perfectly reasonable to expect a rich company to put the bare minimum of effort into translation/localization. No one asked for Seekers to be free, I'd buy it as a novel if it actually had care put into it. But they advertised it as an international release only to drop the ball and use bad machine translation which is disrespectful to everyone reading it.
As someone that works with translations and translators, I don't get why they would not hire a human to edit the translations, it's not that expensive and would keep the fanbase alive
As a fan I feel neutral. I'm making a digimon fangame with by girlfriend in UE5 for our digimon community and hope we can have it published before this Autumn. We are happy with our fanfics and the ocassional manga and game from Japan, but really, Bandai is missing the potential this franchise still has and that is more powerful even than pokemon. Not to mention that they are missing on the potential hidden in the fandom, specially from fans that made wonderful wholesome fanfics and doujinshis but were never picked up nor sponsored by Bandai despite of the amazing messages in them. Can't wait for that 02 movie though!
I know this is about dreamers, but love how in the middle you sort of did a general news catch-up. would be nice to see that kind of stuff more regularly :3
Thanks for letting me know! I actually worried people who watch all my vids would find it pointless, but I always try to remember that every video could be somebody’s first TheDigiKnow AND even somebody’s first time hearing Digimon news since the early 2000s (if they stumbled on the video) !
@@thedigiknow I'm tired of checking WtW every few weeks to see what I missed or try to find out what's going on, I would love a weekly Digimon update if everyone else would
I'm hyped that it's an official, free manga. I'll just read the JP version though, for kana and kanji practice. If I read anymore of that busted MTL, I might end up with a severe allergic reaction 😂
Fan Scanlations typically give you a warning if they only use machine translations. The fact that there's a possiblity they've done this twice without warning is a bit unfair to the community at large.
It is getting a machine translation, then it kinda sucks, as it feels they care not too much for overseas fans given the half assed way they're doing this stuff.
And the most disappointing part of it, in Japan many people already know how to read English and write it, and they are not spending a single dime on hiring a person to do such an easy localization. Gonna wait for one of those "scanlators" sites to publish it in English 😅
Man... it really feels like Bandai has been trying hard to get quick cash lately. I know toy sales in Japan have been abysmal, but they've been acting like scurrying rats trying to scrape together some form of profitability. For some reference on the business end of this whole thing: Bandai is a toy company that deals in licensing, and producing their own toys. Like Tiger, Hasbro, and Mattel they existed in the 90's to market and sell toys to children. Their most profitable times of the year were always Christmas, or in Japan Golden Week, and Childrens Day. These companies are doing HORRIBLY. Want to know the reason Bandai has been throwing everything at the wall with Digimon, Dragon Ball, One Piece etc. etc.!? They're out of ideas. It's why they just released a TON of TCG games that will likely cannibalize eachother in profits. All of them have been terribly translated, and suffer from increasingly gimmicky rarity non-sense. Similarly to Hasbro throwing all their eggs into the MTG basket. See these companies used to have meetings with creative types they would contract to brainstorm toy ideas. Those ideas would either get conveyed to childrens programming that had licensing deals, or they would get internal R&D funding (as Tamagotchi and Digimon did with Bandai) Toys don't sell anymore though. Largely society is completely different, and the way you market to children has changed so much that a lot of old companies find it alien. So they've fallen back onto their older audience, and unfortunately they didn't change the exploitative nature of their business model. So what we have now is a bunch of adults who grew up with these franchise being exploited AS adults with overpriced nostalgia items. The biggest difference is that adults often catch on to exploitative techniques being executed against them. So Bandai suffers massive bleeding in profits. They're basically cutting as many corners as they possibly can while trying to push that marketing machine to its limit. They know people will eat Digimon content, but they don't want to fund development for an audience that won't spend the money on excess nostalgia. Because that's another caveat. Adults are less likely to buy TONS of nostalgic items. Instead we might buy one or two things. So we get charged 50$ for an ancient LCD toy. Or we get charged 100$ for a static PVC statue - AND they only print so many of those things because they know that overproduction would be unwise. There aren't a ton of kids in the world with a TV glued to their eyes that they can advertise these things to. Kids aren't going to be interested in extremely dated tech and toys when they can get the same experience from their smart devices. So I'm just sitting here sighing in depression, because Bandai is probably on its way out the door in the future. Or at the very least we'll see a complete restructuring and pivot. We've reached an age where old tech, and old entertainment has become so legacy to a new generation that it's impossible to get people enjoy older technology the same way. Which makes a lot of sense progression wise when it comes to our interactions with mediums of play, and utility. Toy companies are really feeling it right now, and I don't honestly pity them - because their practices in general have always been exploitive. It's just that now that exploitation is rife with confusion, and panic because it's not as profitable as it was 2 to 3 decades ago.
Is it really, really, so hard for them to hire just one official translator for these type of things? I guess two technically for English and Chinese separately but still, why not!?
Because Dreamers is a manga, it gives me some hope that they might be *forced* to properly translate it, as the website's native translation bot can't touch text inside images. Unless they upload the pages as a PDF or similar file where the text can be edited... It's honestly just insane to me how little effort is made for the overseas audience. I get Digimon had it rough out here, but this complete lack of care sure as hell isn't helping.
Why does the goggle head look like Kari? Is it just me that thinks that or is this her kid from the epilogue and he’s meeting wizardmon for the first time 😂
This sounds a little like Toei is cost cutting with the Digimon manga. Like, Dreamers is moving from Tsaikyo (sp?) Jump to the Digimon Web, and I am assuming that that means whatever share of profit Jump was getting Toei doesn't have to share anymore. And I'm guessing that machine translation costs significantly less than paying a human translator or adapter.
As a fan of a lot of Bandai Namco related things...why they have to be so bad with their fans outside Japan? Especially hoe they deal with brands like Digimon and the Tales of series kills me.
Eh... I'll wait for the fan translation. I already catch up with it. It's light hearted and goofy the way they deal with evolution, but they gave a reason why and it makes the fights fun. I'm surprised they include Bokomon as a supportive character on the first chapters. The little guy gets around!
Okay you know after the rerelease of Digimon Next Order & Digimon 2020 actually having a proper English dub and translation, I thought they were finally starting to consider their localizations more. However with both Seekers and Dreamers just like that there is still a major localization/dubbing issue in regards to Digimon media.
