kit: mercutio 40 - $55
switches: gazzew boba U4T - $25 (lubed using the gazzew method)
- i desoldered the spacebar switch and swapped it for a lavender (it sounds better now)
stabilizers: kbdfans stabs (clipped, lubed, holee modded) - $12
keycaps: white blank PBT keycaps - $30

pros:
this board looks p clean
sounds very nice with case foam
very budget-friendly
small board; saves space on your desk
cons:
40% layout; harder to use but i adjusted within 4 days
lots of soldering (it's really not bad, just be careful)
no real case, just a top and bottom plate with a pcb and standoffs
floating keycap design (idk if this is a con, but i'm not too big of a fan of this design, but on this board, i don't mind)

@@ashryver3605mostly angry at rgb because the marketing for it is pure bs and oftentimes it worsens the product. for keyboards its fine to have glow, for mice it makes less sense as it makes them heavier. for mouse pads it makes even less sense and for headphones it makes negative sense.

remove your case slowly
you can use the keeb with the case attached since battery. Or remove the battery make your own card board case with it

@@rad1ata unlucky. Mine came with the springs lubed pretty well. Stock, actually, the switch has a fairly clacky signature.

I personally would call this Thacc (and a bit clack) because of it's lighter sound and less deep bottom-out, still a very good keeb and an absolutely desirable keeb for a budget price, I would call thocc a deep tactile sound with a deep bottom out sound, you could get this by tape modding or foam modding(A more rubbery foam is also nice) to get a nice bottom out sound, Really good keeb.

i love how aggressively op was tapping the key at the start
i would try add some foam/silicon into the keycaps it makes the hollowness less aparent
but that dampens the sound. people think they want “thocc” but what they really want is a loud and nice sound. not muted and accented.
idk why you would go straight for all the keycaps thats just time consuming and inconsistent plus clearance issues could arise just foam modding the different plates this board comes with would make it deeper and less hollow

holy damn man, that's insane. would this be possible to do with Modecom Volcano Hammer (V1)? I'm talking about desoldering the old switches, getting the Boba U4T's lubed and soldered, and then assembling the keyboard as intended? I really like the keycaps too, will order them later too.
Maybe not like that, but I’m getting a GK61 with Anubis switches and hopefully some good stabilizers for about 150 usd, so I’m hoping it should thick very well :)

Rn i have a rk 68 from amazon they are on sale rn but when i bought it it was 50 something and they’re hot swappable plus it can record macros has other features can has a wire wired or wireless mode i think you should go with that or the keeb the guy above me said they are both probably budget friendly options

This budget build is around as much as the average keyboard I see online. My definition of “budget” is a bit lower than average, so I’m confused.
I think that's because this person is thinking from a custom keyboard perspective, so this price range is been as "budget keyboard" by an enthusiast.
For reference, custom keyboards are around at 300 bucks at entry level (cheaper ones will be made out of plastic/acrylic) and can go up to thousands of dollars, hope this helps!
It costs more to build a custom, even if that custom 100 buck keyboard turns out to not be as good as a prebuilt customisable 80-100 buck keyboard, you’re buying all the parts separately, as more stuff is available in the market and it is more established then the prices for custom parts will start dropping more, but saying that I’ve noticed that we are able to build a budget keyboard right now for 50-80 dollars

What’s wrong with 40%? You can use layers and some programmers actually use it since it’s more comfortable for them.

Sounds like a normal board with really hollow keycaps to me
it is quite hollow, and that's mainly due to the fact that there literally is no case
and the keycaps are hollow, that is another factor (but it's mainly the case)
@@sbean Having no case shouldn't play a big role in it sounding hollow, you need an empty shell to have something hollow. And if there is no case there is nothing to be hollow there

true, but it is a deep sound signature and i did add two layers of foam in the keyboard. there is literally no case, just a bottom plate, pcb, and a fr4 plate (it's almost impossible to remove the hollowness).

Unfortunately, they keyboard is also hollow due to lack of a case. Hollowness and thockieness are two completely different things.

i just stuffed some random foam i found lying around between the pcb and bottom plate. it worked quite well
