I agree. I think that's one of the main reasons he turned to the Darkside and was so easily manipulated by Darth Sidious/Palpatine. After Qui-Gon's death, Palpatine was the only man he felt he could go to, to confide in and feel validated and not judged. He saw Obi-Wan as the judgemental older brother not a father.
He could still hear and see with his helmet off. Just very poorly. There's tons of scenes with his helmet off like The Force Unleashed ending and in comics
