- It's been heavily implied something romantic was between Frieren and Himmel but this episode not only confirms it but also makes the journey to heaven all the more powerful.

"We knew something was there between them but this truly changed everything" - I thought it was pretty obvious to everyone :O
Himmel was fine with his feeling not ever reaching Frieren. He knew flower language and knew that Frieren didn't know the meaning of the flower of the ring. When he saw the opportunity to put the ring on, he put it on as if proposing since he knew he would never get the opportunity to do it for real. The ost, bells ring in the background and animation was all amazing and made the scene to be as impactful as possible.
What a coincidence she chose THAT ring. Like if she knew more about flowers and their meaning than she cares to admit...
Oh yes I refuse to believe that Frieren who has been alive for over thousand year. Who have read lot of magical texts would not have come across that flower language. And maybe let her subconscious guide to pick out just that ring
@@vincentlalyman1008 some say there are no cincedences
Evan Call made the perfect music for the perfect scene.
@@didsvaYou do know that Frieren wasn't really travelling after Flamme's death, right? Iirc, she said she hasn't fought a demon for 500 years since Hummel found her. Meaning she wasn't actively going around to find them. Plus, magical text and flower language are different from each other.
The ring that symbolizes eternal love + Himmel going down on one knee as if he was proposing + the church bells that rang right after placing the ring on frierens finger.
Truly beautiful but also bittersweet knowing how Himmel's story ends.
You would think that the hero, who slayed the demon king, would have a trail of suitors or be part of numerous political marriage arrangements to pass on his genes. Knowing that Himmel stayed single his whole life makes Frieren’s journey to Heaven all that more important.
This series is like a Swiss clock, every tiny piece works perfectly together.
And it breaks your heart every episode like clockwork.
Stuff like this really makes the whole situation between Himmel and frieren more tragic. He loved her, but she was completely oblivious to it all. He lived an entire full life and only after he died did frieren begin to reflect on their time spent together. But she'll never have a second chance to do things differently
5:38 Rewatched the whole series a while back and, the funny thing is, the ring is actually shown right at EPISODE ONE, right after the grave scene. It’s one that’s so easy to miss but when you look back at it after this episode, it REALLY gets you thinking about how Frieren’s feeling as she holds that ring on her hand.
Ikr I only realized it after they teased the ring again back at smug potion scene
I think my brain has yet to process the proposal by Himmel. Actually, let me check real quick...ah yep...Brain.exe is not responding.
The moment when Fern realized what Frieren was looking for and immediately insisted that they would stay and continue searching for as long as it took really struck me, and I just realized why. If Frieren had still been on her own, she would unquestionably have stayed and searched for the ring indefinitely. The only reason she felt the need to give up on the search was because she is traveling with people, and she now understands that it's not fair to ask her companions to wait around indefinitely for her to find it. And the person who taught her that was Fern! So when Fern, without any hesitation, emphatically insists that this time, not only is it ok for Frieren to be searching for the ring, it is imperative for her to do so, it's such a reversal of what Frieren expected.
Of course, Fern insisting on searching for the ring actually is in character for her, despite going against her usual hurried attitude, because we know how Fern treasures gifts from loved ones, from previous episodes and even from earlier in this same episode. So when Fern reacts this way, it's giving us new insight into her character. Of these two things she values highly, her reaction here clearly shows how much more she treasures heartfelt gifts over time.
Also, the other reason that Fern instantly understands how important this ring is to Frieren is that she knows Frieren has spent every night searching for it, and Fern knows Frieren. She knows Frieren never actually SAYS anything is important to her (and she still doesn't at the end of this episode!), but she sees and understands Frieren's actions, and from that she knows how important the ring is.
I rewatched episode 1 earlier this week and saw that the ring was shown even then, so I was just waiting until they explored more about it and can't believe Himmel gave her it in such a way. That scene was so beautiful and really heartbreaking to see knowing Frieren's regret. Such a well done episode, it got the feels out again.
Every damn episode is 10/10 . I'm just thankful to be able to watch this masterpiece "in real time"
Manga readers basically get a shin shoryuken to the soul with the latest chapter being followed immediately by THIS EPISODE as a reminder...
God, now that long hiatus looks really, really suspicious. It's almost like Yamada-sensei was timing the chapters to the anime schedule. The current hiatus makes me suspect that there's a second one of these coming.
If that is true... then the author is playing 4D chess with the readers and that's just incredible imo.
But of course, its speculation lol
what is the regular schedule for the manga? is it bimonthly?
@@davids7646 Weekly.
@@davids7646weekly however, the author takes hiatuses very often.
@@AliciaCarag thanks i always wonder what it was cause i usually just left not reading it for months so i can read more in a single sitting.
This was a massive episode for understanding the relationship between Himmel and Frieren. Love is in the air, baby!
Himmel didn't hide his feelings like it was first thought. He was falling for her "seduction" technique and other things but there was no clear indication UNTIL THIS EPISODE. Frieren sadi that he probably didn't have a clue what the flower on the ring actually meant but he was well aware. The OST when he kneeled down to put it on her finger was mesmerising. I was like a bystander witnessing a confession between two people. The bells rung loudly in that moment. What a perfect scene.
Im glad she found the ring and now this journey to see him in heaven is even more impactful with the context we were given.
We were lucky that this merchant had this location spell because otherwise it would've taken them years to find that ring in that deep forest.
Some people would say Fern was a bit too annoying this episode, but she had the right to be. And people forget that they are still teens. People act on impulse and don't think about the concequences.
I felt bad for Stark but what Sein says is true. Men do tend to be forgetful more often than not. I have a hard time remembering peoples names at times and you can bet I'd forget a birthday in a second if I didn't have my phone or my parents reminding me of such events (unless they are in the close family circle).
I'm glad they both realised their mistakes and made up for it. I'm not the type to ship people like some other fans who sometimes take it too far, but they are cute together.
Its funny how Sein put an arm around Stark and dissed Fern calling her a hard type to deal with and she was just staring at them with laster eyes.
Dumbasses didn't realise she could hear them xD.
Also... probably the second best moment in the episode was the chat between Heiter and Frieren.
Him admitting that even though he is older and has to be father to Fern, he is putting up a front and he hasn't changed since he was a kid.
I like how Frieren went over and patted him on the head, praising him and he in turn was going to praise her to the godess.
Sweet moment and she said the same to Sein. I love Sein btw. Man just wants an older woman in his life. He has Frieren but she is a bit too old for the guy xD.
Fantastic episode 10/10 again and its hard to deny that this series is defo anime of the year. And is going to be in my top 5 personal best anime i've witnessed. We're halfway through this season and I already want a S2 annoucment if possible:
Great review Brandon keep it up.
I wish the anime would give Himmel's look when he recognized the ring Frieren choosen more anguish like in the manga. In the manga, you can feel how heartbroken he realized his unrequited love was
yea imo that specific part is a bit underwhelming too but they still did a good job on the scene
Himmel was a rizz master what a way to propose
100%
Man's got more game then most of us in this comment section ngl. Mad respect for Himmel!
@@xtremegaming9943but it wasn't enough for Frieren's dense ass lmao.
Himmel loved all aspect of Frieren, which meant he setup a future that would allow her to appreciate that fact long after he was gone. It reminds me of when a lover sets up a scavenger hunt for the other, and we all know what's at the end of that scavenger hunt; but in this case Himmel himself isn't at the end of it, just his love.
i like how the ring means “eternal love” because it still conveys those incredible feelings of love 80 years after it was gifted
and i’m sure it’ll convey that love eternally as it was made to
On first watch, I didn't understand why they were pausing so much on the church when Frieren enters the city. Then we hear the bells of this church at the end... This sort of little details is so well done.
This is a mature series.
But not in the sense we usually think on mature series.
It's kinda sad in a way that in later years "mature" in a story means "sleazy", "cruel", "nihilistic", "pessimistic", or all together.
No series in recent memory, anime or western, has its characters behaving like this. Like actual people truly learning from their mistakes, no matter how small, and embracing the change that action entails.
Learning to avoid childish outbursts of emotion because the characters are made to reflect on what they did wrong and how to address/redress said mistake is something that has a lot of power as a scene.
And Sein, being the only true adult in the mix, he did a bang up job being there to help Stark and Fern, and even Frieren, who despite her centuries of life is pretty socially inept.
Heck, even the whole part with the ring is another form of maturity. Some things are worth the effort. Some things are worth asking help for.
The characters are all better people for taking the time to confront those issues in their journey through those times of their lives.
That's what hits me. That's what clicks with me.
To pack all that in a 25 minutes episode with such beautiful visuals and impactful ost... it's a true chef's kiss.👌
Couldn't have said all that better myself 🤗 **chef's kiss**
This is why I focus on a quick question that popped in conversation between Flamme and Frieren about regretting teaching Frieren, caring and devoting your life for someone who will outlive you by eons. Flamme knew this, Himmel and the others knew this, Fern and Stark know this and yet they remain. It serves as a 3rd person view of how we focus on relationships despite our ephemeral nature. The conversation between Freiren and Heiter really got to me.
Now everyone can finally agree with me that Frieren is up there with Vinland saga when it comes to God level dialog between characters and also character development notice how Sein father figure to all of them including Frieren.
We will get to see more of Fern and stark in the upcoming episodes 🤗
I saw a comment on twitter how the flower detail of the ring is of a flower that did not bloom compare to the one in the bracelet. You can say, I guess, that it symbolizes how their love never "bloomed"
Just like their new party member said, ah to be young. I'm sure Fern and Stark will make amends and get along again.
And it looks like that is how Frieren is going to learn about relationship and love. By watching them as they figure that out
Yeah, it's like Frieren full understands stuff from her past through events happening currently.
This episode was so lovely as it basically was dealing with the love in the present and past of the party. Like we had Stark who messed up with not remembering Fern’s birthday. Which is a big yikes but I’m happy that she got some advice and guidance from our new priest character. As that allowed them to talk it out. Where Stark after much work managed to find the correct gift for her. And he hit the jackpot with giving her a bracelet which symbolize enteral love. Even better was how Fern accepted the gift after learning that. Then we had Frieren and Himmel story where Frieren was going to show off her ring which had the same symbols on it. But her briefcase was like an old lady’s bag as it seemed to have lot of stuff and that it took her a while to find what she was looking for. But at that moment a bird picked up the carriage which caused her to lose it. I like how she explained how flying magic is something very new that people took from demon and still does not fully understand how that magic works. But yeah Frieren sneaking out every night to find her ring really tell you how much it cares about it. And it hurt when she says that she is used to losing things. As she does not want to delay the rest of her parties time for her sake. But luckily they got a new spell to fix that problem. And that was very lucky seeing how it basically was an engagement ring that Himmel put on her ring finger. Which is one of the most lovely scene that I have seen this anime season👱♂️❤🧝♀️
She was looking at the ring in the first episode, after Himmel's death, when she is saying goodbye to Heiter and Eisen outside the city.
Btw, the Ring first appears in Episode 1, when she stands outside the Town after Himmels death, she got it in the palm of her Hand looking at it.
The Hero is Himmel, pronounced Him Mel. Its German for Heaven. Puts a new meaning on Frierens goal to journey to "Heaven", right?
I just love this series so much. They have done a great job a conveying relationships and feelings. It is a true joy to watch on a weekly basis. We are officially at the halfway mark.
I once dated a 51 year old woman when I was 26. I thought THAT was an age-gap.
But 26 and 1,000 is a bit extreme.
And yes, I just Googled Himmel's age when they defeated the Demon King. I just got lucky that we were the exact same ages.
ive banged many of milfs in my time they are fun
Also:
Fighting demons and monsters: meh
Fern pouts: oh crap, we are dead.
One of the most touching scenes that gets glossed over easily for me is the scene between Heiter and Frieren (and Sein) when discussing being praised. As an adult you're hardly ever praised for doing difficult adult things, which is fine and what generally comes with being an adult. What made it so touching for me, speaking as an adult myself, was how real it felt when they said how from when we were young, we still have the mind now as we've had from back then, only now we just act like adults (both for our own benefit and for children's sake). And also, in a what may seem immature to some, but sweet to me, was how these two human adults (Heiter and Sein), were for a moment allowed to be praised like kids for holding up and being strong dependable adults by someone much older than them. Acts of sincere consideration really get me in shows and anime, and it's the emotional delicacy in which this anime handles such minor topics that just adds to how much I love this anime.
If there was any doubt left that Himmel loved Frieren, that should cease it. Now think about it,she disappeared for 50 years, this man had to stay away from her the entire time and the worst part is that she didn’t even mean to do it…
I'm looking forward to more of the new developments in all their relationships and what kind of interactions they'll have from here on out. I really enjoyed this episode even though nothing big happened in terms of plot.
I laughed pretty hard when the bird picked up their caravan and Frieren assumed Stark could just jump off and not die lmao.
I absolutely loved this episode and the past with Himmel + Frieren lol. Also Fern getting pretty much getting a "how to" of doing things with a guy around her own age. It was super adorable lmao. And I'm really glad that Stark can speak honestly and open with her about why he didn't get her a gift.
When your only travel companions are some of the most powerful people in the world, and yet they are some of the goofiest people out there, your view of normal is very much twisted.
@@sentryion3106 lol so true. Must be weird as an outsider to listen/see them.
An extremely beautiful episode. Totally agree about the music, I was in my feelings as it played, especially through the flashback scene.
I also appreciated the stellar directoral choice of the ring flashing in Frieren's eyes when she discovered it's location - a complete dual meaning to signify her awareness of truly discovering its depth of meaning.
This show is nearly giving Fruits Basket levels of heartwarming satisfaction right now.
I wish there was a way for Himmel to be reborn.
As a manga reader, Frieren has always felt like a love story first and foremost. Himmel might be gone, but he's still ever present through Frieren and her memories and her love for him (even if she's unaware of the shape of her feelings).
I'm glad we finally got to this episode. One of the highlights of the entire story for me.
Unironically the best romance I have ever read, and I have read a lot of shoujo and shounen romance. It's incredibly beautiful yet tragic. The unspoken and unconditional love between the two, it's just so pure.
@@reinartes7079 there's another youtuber who's a psychologist that reacts to anime and in a reaction for some show he mentioned that people at different ages find fulfilment in different ways, and for older people in the later stage of their life, fulfilment comes from their memories and recalling the best times of their life and the people they've lost.
It gives words to the general impression I always got from the show, that as bittersweet as the story of Frieren is, for her these memories are much more sweet than bitter, and her grief isn't always painful and sad but often very happy and fulfilling. I love seeing how her love for Himmel, and for Heifer and Eisen is also expressed in her actions in the present, and especially in her love for Fern and Stark.
It's very very beautiful, and a very unique perspective I haven't seen anywhere else really.
I 100% agree with you the episode was absolutely beautiful :)
now we know why Himmer never married or had kids even though he was very popular
Frieren channeling Violet Evergarden feels haha... Although she haven't realize... but damn... each pieces in her "journey" again... is like a compass to Himmel... I mean bruh she can toss away the idea of Himmel but why does his memory linger? So if she can't be next to him... must settle for the ghost of him bwahahaha XD
5:27 in defense of fern, she is a teenager who starts being an adventurer at a very young age and has very little interaction with someone about her age like stark.
It also legitimized Sein importance when it comes to social interactions in this group.
Himmel propose to Frieren in front of the church was so beautiful but tragic at the same time 😳🥺
Hope that Journey to Heaven will end well 🙏🏼
Stark and Fern' relationship development was is incredible as always, but a bit lovely as well 😊
Outside of this potential romance between the two. I just find their dynamic so interesting and funny to watch 😌
This show will remain in my favourite Fantasy type story for a very long time and perhaps forever 😎
Frieren patting Heiter on the head almost made me cry huhu
i think other than that heartmelting scene with Frieren and Himmel, and Stark and Fern, I think one of the important things that most viewers overlooked is the talk between Frieren and Heiter. Heiter mentioned that people remains a child/young at heart even if they get age, and even sometimes, one had to be an act and be an adult for others' emotional support. It's a heartwarming scene, especially when Frieren pats Heiter and Sein's heads.
As for Himmel and Frieren... Chapter 117 and 118 will definitely break everyone's hearts
such a lovely and beautiful episode. not everything has to be action and adventure, is your life filled with that non stop action, no. then why would some people get upset if this episode was bittersweet and slice of life filled. backstory can really make a show like this since we don't know all the details of the original quest members. another 10/10
Evan Call, our boy.
That scene where Frieren uses magic to find the ring looked to be rotoscoped or something. Felt like it was an odd choice all things considered but still looked stunning.
SPOILER ALERT! This last episode feels much stronger in my heart after reading the last two chapters of Frieren in the manga.
Legit
Yeah, the bitter sweet go through the roof with them.
I actually think this is used to lay the groundwork for later in the series. Dusting a bit of star-crossed romance here and there XD
I think the proper reaction to Fern's kicking is somewhere between the two perspectives. No, she's not angrily trying to injure Sein, but on the flip side, she's been shown to be a fair bit stronger than your average 17 year old girl, and she's not exactly wearing dainty slippers, so those kicks no doubt hurt, whether she intends them to or not.
pain is fun though
@@AHBrandonReviews TMI...
Himmel probably has the most tragic one sided love in the history of anime. 😢
I love the use of show, not tell in this anime.
For me, I'm a bit different when it comes to shipping couples on television shows. Of course... yes, I do want them to get together, but for me part of the fun and thrill is investing in the relationship not knowing what will happen, because guess what... that's what you always do, what you're always forced to do, in real life.
When I was young the first "entertainment" I ever consumed were novels - I was gifted two books by Jules Verne by my father on my fourth birthday, and I'd say they have influenced my view on the world heavily - and I wasn't "into" romance or feelings whatsoever, it was all hard science fiction. Kids that age don't understand these things. It was only later that I would become more and more absorbed by psychological and romantic dramas, because for me, those were the grand mystery. I've always felt girls have a better natural understanding of these things, so in a way, it makes more sense for boys to invest time and thought in understanding them.
But I digress. This was a lovely episode, and Frieren is a lovely show. On a side note I've always mostly looked down on the fantasy genre, opting to call it "lazy science fiction" - and I stand by that still, broadly. Fantasy is only truly good when it respects its own rules and treats its setting with the same rigor as good science fiction. When it does, it becomes identical to science fiction if you disregard the window-dressing.
Star Wars isn't science fiction. Frieren is science fiction. This is a huge compliment from me.
Mushoku tensei season 2 part 2 be coming in HARD
Yeah, some channel seems to get triggered by Fern for having emotions, and accused her of being abusive.. I think those not warranted accusations are absurd and actually quite abusive..
however, I may say this happens because because of the culture, or because there’s a slightest tone differences caused by translation.. anyway, she’s fine
Manga folks got hurt doubled. I won't spoil anything just wanna say they really had planned it. How we got 'that scene' in the manga and 'ring scene' in the anime in THE Very Same Week! Accident? Nah bro, i think not. They really had planned it..
By the way I can be mistaken but I think we see the ring even in the first episode.
we do yeah
I feel sorry for Himmel 😅
I wonder if it takes the Gintama route and steps up the story slowly and slowly. I feel like we might end up fighting the demon king at the end but that will be irrelevant. In Gintama beating the villian isnt important, but whats important is that the journey is over. There is no more odd jobs and no more bantering, no more not paying rent etc.
I am expecting something similar from Frieren.
HIMmel the rizzler
I'd argue the romance itself wasn't the point. Frieren finding out what the ring symbolizes further feeds into her quest of gradually getting to know Himmel in hindsight.
Fern and Stark though? Yeah that's true affection. But their arc continues to be levity contrasting Frieren's self-discovery. Greatly balanced writing.
Have you watched Godzilla minus one?
