I had an issue with sewer smell in my home for over 15 years. Asked several plumbers what was causing it. I had snow freezing up in just the top foot of my stink pipes where they exit the roof. Temps would get just below freezing and I would have to go on the roof and unplug them. I must have done this at least 15-20 times every winter. SO FRUSTRATED. So one day I decided to pinpoint where the actual smell was coming from as it was not coming from any of my sink trappes. There was one spot near my kitchen floor where the smell was very strong. My thought was that who ever built this wall may have accidentally put a screw in a stink pipe and it was leaking right there. I cut a hole in the wall and you would not believe what I found................There was indeed a stink pipe on the other side and it was completely OPEN!!!!! When they rebuilt the kitchen area and moved the sink that was once there and they forgot to close off the old stink pipe. So you can imagine how bad the smell was for all these years. Needless to say I plugged it off and never smelled sewer again. Never had to go on the roof again either. So my advice to anyone reading this is to try and find the cause. Make sure all your sinks have traps and make sure the traps have water in them. When you smell the sewer smell try and locate exactly where it is coming from. Also I live where winters get down to -30f
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We too live where it gets -30 (NW Minnesota). It’s flat as a pancake out here with little to block the relentless winter winds so things freeze quickly. I was really hoping it would be something simple to remedy but it sounds like finding the leak or blockage is the most challenging part. We have a 2 story’s and very pitched roof that is metal and icy so I’m really hesitant to get up there. Nor do I like the idea of tearing into the walls but after hearing your story I’m so glad you did !!
@@nancy143ish Oh boy you do live in harsh conditions. I wouldn't go on your roof either. I take it you have sewer smell and have not located the source?
Great video We have a septic system with 2 bathrooms. One has a strong odor that comes and goes. We replaced the wax in that toilet but we still have the on again/off again odor. Help !
Yep, smoke test costs about $1200 to start here in Connecticut . So, before I do that, I'm researching what I might be able to do, if anything at all. Our condo has a very strong sewage odor coming from our laundry room area. I keep thinking it's the washer, but when I open the washer door and stick my head in, it smells like Tide! Lol After watching this video though, I agree that I've had too many ppl out to try to figure this smell out and they all say the same thing, they don't smell what we're smelling OR they can't locate it. We've tried plumbers, the city, the sewage treatment plant down the road from us stinks all the time , we've complained that it has to be their gasses somehow getting in to our unit, but they are insisting that I'm wrong and it can't be, because we have traps! I'm going to pull my washer away from the wall now I've seen this... that's gotta be it! Thanks man!
Did you figure out the sewer smell issue at your house? I’m getting it in the basement. We have no sump pump or drains to worry about, I put cleaner tablets in the washing machine on the first floor and that causes the smell to disappear after a couple of hours. The washer itself, does not stink.
@vermontmike9800 No, we've never been able to get to the bottom of it. It doesn't smell usually. But if we get a large amount of rain where streets are flooding etc... that's usually when we get the smell.. it's not every rain, just the rains that are torrential and drop a lot in a short time or if we have steady rain days on end. Otherwise, there's no smell. Never did get that smoke test.
Wish we had reputable plumbers like you in our part of Virginia. We have a suspish smell and are reluctant to call our landlord as he typically sends a reject from clown college to pretend to repair issues. Thanks for the video, makes it easier to not get the run around.

I have a similar problem in my cellar. I'm no expert, and my problem may be different from yours, but I have a blocked roof gutter, so when it rains water that should evacuate into the drain spills right near my cellar vent, here in the UK it rains alot & over time that water seeps through the brickwork into my cellar and then the wind blows in dirt. I need to clear the roof gutter and also get rid of all the years worth of dirt that's accumulated on my cellar floor. I hope you discover the problem. Its usually a blocked vent or a ventilation related problem.
I did everything, crawled under house, smoke tests, camera, pulled toilet, opend the walls for visual inspection all not the problem. Turns out the smell was from decaying paper, between the shower pan and tile. The only tell was that the smell changed a little and was not as strong when the shower was no longer being used because the whole bath was torn apart. so someone used backer paper before tiling the shower pan. Who knew?

What if you have a moldy, chemical smell and it's not the sewer gas? Checked the P traps, vent is working great, did a smoke test no leaks anywhere, new flange, and even with the wax ring set, the room smells funny. Not necessarily sewer gas, at least everyone's said they can't smell sewer gas. Is there an off gas from wax rings or the new tile floor?
Yeah fortunately, the flange for the toilet was in the garage ceiling, and I watched the guy raise the old flange, and I smell nothing underneath it, so it would be nearly impossible for it to be a loose pipe. In fact the smell is only in the bathroom after the new wax ring was installed with the new toilet. It is pretty mild now. Only thing I can think of is possibly paint down the sink drain with what I know is some grease, leftover sewer gas from the remodel. Thanks for the help.
My home smells like poo ONLY when the heat comes on. Have had HVAC guys come out 3 times and they can't find a thing. However the smell is still there, my unit is electric with a heatpump not gas. So what is the problem
No just keep the door closed and window open. The venting pipe on roof is towards the back of the house and has 3 levels so it's dangerous as I live in Rainy climate. Paid $500 around for mrrooter and a second company to no help.
