  • Today, we're checking out a title that I've been looking forward to trying for a while now. It took me until 2024 to get to it, but it's finally time.
Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon.
2023 was a huge year for gaming, featuring some absolutely incredible releases, with Baldur's Gate 3 being the apparent standout amongst them.
The GOTY winner seemed to cast a huge shadow over many of the year's other releases, featuring a level of quality and polish rarely seen in modern gaming.
BUT... I'm here to tell you, even though it didn't take the crown, Armored Core VI is a GOTY caliber game that features incredible gameplay, customization/personalization mechanics, and a damn good story. I'm honestly finding it hard to set down.
Seriously. Don't pass this one up.
Stick around to find out why.

A key thing that should be considered, given Many people bitched about it being too hard
This is still a Fromsoft Game
    If you expect handholding, dont
You’re given every tool imaginable and a tutorial that really helps learn every combat mechanic
So please don’t expect this will be a walk in the park. You will die, you will get stuck, but compared to dark souls where sometimes when you get stuck you’re Stuck; remake your AC
    That’s the beauty of it

Coming from a classic Armored Core background, it sure felt like FS was trying to hold my hand the whole time I was playing AC6.
      - Hardlock
      - Free supply drops
      - Generous ammo counts
      - Checkpoints
      - Getting fully restocked on ammo and AP when you reload a checkpoint
      - Being allowed to freely refit my AC during said checkpoints
      - Infinite retries to every mission
      - Mission rewards so generous my ammo and repair costs were meaningless
      - Immediate access to mission replay
      - No debt mechanic
      - No heat mechanic
      - Energy firearms don't use EN
      - Forgiving EN mismanagement
      - Fewer part stats
      - Fewer part types (option parts, inside parts, shoulder parts, etc)
I would have liked AC6 better if:
      - Option to fully disable hardlock in the game settings, and it should not be available in PvP
      - Calling in for a supply drops cost money
      - Less ammo
      - Checkpoints did not replenish ammo and AP
      - Refitting at checkpoints cost money
      - Maximum of 3 retries for every mission not imperative to the main story
      - Smaller mission rewards
      - No access to mission replay until you completed a playthrough
      - Option to play ironman mode with debt
      - Heat damage
      - Energy firearms still used EN
      - Less forgiving EN mismanagement
      - More part stats
      - More part types
      - No stagger mechanic

Just a quick correction, it's not "some" of the main story's characters that appear in the arena, all of those pilots are featured in the main story, some are RLF warriors, some are random mercs, and most are either balam redguns, arqebus vesper, or the top of the top mercenaries who are related in a way that would count as a spoiler. But every ac fought in the arena, prior to the ones found in future NG+ runs, are featured in the story at one point or another, depending on the missions you select and if you're willing to explore a bit.

One thing I discovered through play is that, you do not want to go into this game with a specific type of build in mind whether it be specifically for pvp or you wanna do a themed playthrough. The way a lot of encounters are set up, you will guaranteed need to change your loadout entirely at least 5 times through the story. There are just some fights where your favorite build isn't viable in the slightest. I regret starting new over my old save file now, but I was dumb and wanted to start fresh with a fully themed build and it was just an absolute mistake doing so. TLDR: You'll have more fun going into this game having no build plans or anything than if you go in hoping your favorite build will be fun for the whole game.

Coming from a classic AC title background (since PS1), I strongly advise people to treat AC6 as an "introductory" Armored Core game, and not the quintessential Armored Core experience. This is because it's an even more bare bones entry than the original game. The reason behind this is because the Armored Core franchise has always been criticized for being "too hard" and "overwhelming" with all of its mechanics and large stats lists. For the sake of making AC6 more accessible for new players, FromSoft put on the kid gloves. This is not to say Armored Core 6 is bad. Only that it does coddle the player a great deal more compared to the classic games. At no time will you ever actually be at risk of losing the game in any way.
There is no debt, and you have access to mission replay immediately rather than as an end-game reward. This makes money a non-issue, so they might as well have cut money from the game entirely and awarded you the parts. Debt used to work in conjunction with finite attempts for most missions. If you could not finish a mission in 1-3 tries, the game moved on and gave you the next mission. Thus, if you were doing poorly, you might not be able to afford new parts and may have to take on harder missions with subpar equipment.
The old games did not have checkpoints or supply drops. This meant you had to complete most missions all in one go. This also required most bosses to be designed to take into account the fact player will likely have taken damage and used a good portion of their ammo reserves. This can be done in AC6, and it's an incredible feat to accomplish. But the experience is very different when it's the default setting, your ammo reserves are severely limited, and your finances are on the line.
This is all just the tip of the iceberg. The classic games also have more part types, better part cohesion, turning speed, environmental hazards, and harsher penalties for EN mismanagement, heat management, tank controls, and having to come to a full stop and crouch to use shoulder cannons.
If you read all this, thanks, and I hope you do get to try the classic games.

@@homeslicebread8443 Don't get me wrong, I truly am glad people like AC6. I think it has accomplished much of what From Software wanted it to do. And I will fully agree the characters in AC6 are probably the best made and developed in the entire series - even if they're not all the most well paced or presented. Like, Rusty is calling you "buddy" after one fight. I think there should be at least one more in between.
Still, imagine this was gunpla, as an analogy. People new to gunpla should start with a beginners kit, and not a Perfect Grade kit - the most advanced kits you can buy. I've built a few PG kits, and I want more. But say all of the newest gunpla kits being rolled out are all beginners kits, how would you expect me to feel?

Armored Core 6 has a couple minor flaws that might leave OG mech players wanting more... an adventure style camera, no cover system, no free aiming system/scope plus some of the worst AI and voice acting I've ever experienced really hold this title back
By now I was hoping that a cover system would be the standard in all third person shooters and it would be great if you could slave a camera orientation to one of the dash functions for a quick glance option in any direction rather than having to steer your camera around like a boat. Unfortunately the game doesn't have a manual aim mode so everything seems to be done off auto targeting and instead of a tight third person over the shoulder view like Gears of War it has a free floating movie camera more like an adventure game so when you press in any direction except forward your character has to turn in order to head that direction... this provides some jerky animation sequences as always. Overall a fantastic game but lack of camera options no cover system and not much diversity in your aiming strategy take away from the overall title
They definitely could have learned a few things from Vanquish!!

Fromsoft games are niche trash. Most ppl who get tricked into buying any of their games are going to be extremely regretful. They need to get out of their own way and add a difficulty setting. Cheap trash does not always mean hard. Bad game design does not always mean hard.
I bought it, day one. I wasted an entire afternoon (over 5hrs) on that single boss at the end of chapter one and when I beat him it made me hate the game more, the fact that they even put him there. By the end of chapter 3 I was in an existential crisis of why they would even make this game. Uninstalled. Fromsoft fans needs their heads checked.
