    Thank you so much Aria and Merle! It is such an honor to be able to show you guys around in our neighbourhood. I have always loved my hometown and I'm always happy to spend time here with family and friends. Can't wait to see what's next in the series 🎉

    I'm a Singaporean living in the U.S. and sometimes watching you guys going to my hometown is very very interesting. At times we don't realize what we had until we see it through someone else eyes and yes it is so true that Singapore, no matter what time of the night it is, it is super safe compare to any other country. Girls as young as teenagers could hang out in their neighborhood late or through out the night. Sure we do have crimes happening but it is rare to come across danger. Singapore cost of living is high though. Especially housing and that is the sole reason why parents and children have to stay together. Retirement check ain't much either and so that's why till they are so old, you still see some people working just to survive.

    Yishun being "dangerous" was more of a joke/meme to the locals as some of the main cases was happening only at Yishun like cat killers, random weird person doing weird stuff and etc at a short period of time. So we just end up make a joke like Build the Yishun wall and etc. But it is a pretty normal neighborhood like the rest of the place in Singapore.
    I think it started around 2015 to 2016 where a lot of cases pop from there. I think it started from the cat killer case and after that it started the ball rolling. So that how the meme of yishun being the Florida of Singapore was born.

    • @Aria.Inthavong
      @Aria.Inthavong  2 года назад +3

      I definitely see how it's a joke/meme, as the experience we had here was fantastic and one of the best travel experiences of my life!!

  • @mimixmin
    @mimixmin 2 года назад +139

    Oh wow you guys were in my neighbourhood! Literally I can see you guys walking past my block of flats in this video! Yishun being "dangerous" is more of a meme to be honest. Sure we had a cat killer, and some foreigners committed murders here, but honestly those exist in other parts of Singapore too! And it's just as safe here in Yishun as any part of Singapore, as you already know how safe Singapore is. You can walk around in ANY part of Singapore in the middle of the night at 2am and nobody will bother you at all, and Yishun is no exception to that! As a female, I've taken that same walk you guys took from the station in this video to get home, in the middle of the night. Even when I was a kid or teenager, walking alone to that station to take the MRT to get to school.. It's safe!
    Edit: It's honestly so funny how shocked you guys were when you heard that you can leave your bags in public spaces in Singapore and nothing will happen to your belongings 🤣It's true, in Mcdonald's or at the library if you just leave your laptop and bags on the table to go to the toilet, you'll come back and find everything untouched. I guess as a Singaporean that's one of the things we take for granted because it's not even an issue you have to think about, until you travel and realise that you can't do that anywhere else! 🥰

      this lol. Singaporeans are generally quite rule abiding so there’s generally respect for other people’s stuff, especially if it’s not too valuable (like a water bottle being used to reserve a spot). I think one of the few other places I’d feel as safe walking around at night is Japan. Hope you guys got to eat at some of the (many) good food spots around here!
      (p.s. for anyone who’s interested, i do think our HDB program is worth looking into. we’ve got one of the better public housing programs around and there’s some neat research out there about it.)

    I will go against most of the PC comments here and say that Yishun (along with the Northern neighbourhoods) are "rougher" than most of the south, east, or even west. The most commonly heard voices in the north seem to be Malaysian-accented mandarin, and Mainland Chinese-accented mandarin, which indicates the heavy immigrant population here. The Singaporeans here also tend to speak in their mother tongues rather than English, which a past report has shown as being co-related to lower social economic status in Singapore.
    When I first moved to the north from the east, I also had a shock at the number of heavily tattooed individuals and "ah bengs" here (tattoos per se are not an issue, but you know the hooligan type when you see them). There is also nowhere else in Singapore where so many e-scooters and bicycles buzz around on the footpaths dangerously. In my view, Yishun is indeed the worst non-red light district neighbourhood in Singapore. But I'd live here instead of an actual red light district like Geylang any day.
    Finally, I would also rather be in Yishun or Geylang rather than any large city in California, especially LA and SF (yes I've been there several times before and experienced the homeless scourge and open drug-taking there).

    Thanks Wesley! It was great having a local set the record straight. I can relate somewhat because I live in the very safe and peaceful state of Vermont When people call a certain area “ghetto” it’s like they have no understanding of how good we have it here. People are generally friendly and courteous. People pick up garbage when they see it on the ground and if you were in a jam you can rely on strangers to help. Unfortunately there’s crime wherever you go in the world but I take comfort in knowing where I live the balance is in favor of good.

    Awesome!!! I've been to Yishun and honestly had no issues. I really feel areas that are government built worldwide are purposefully made out to be the "criminal" negative part of the city. When in reality they are the friendliest, most heartwarming, generous and easy areas to get on with.

      Thing is, the entire country is government built. Yishun got its reputation not bc of state involvement and intervention. It’s from this almost never-ending reports of cats being brutally killed in the area from like a few years ago. And that’s not smth we see a lot here? Like no one particular estate ever makes the news so many times in a row for crime related stuff.

    Yishun looks more like a highly commercialized city in Metro Manila (PH) & not a dangerous neighborhood (It's a compliment). Plus I'm glad they captured that cat-killer. Sadly in the PH, some high end-establishments (not all) secretly kill off the stray cats that roam around in their area. They deny wrong-doing & claim they relocated them but there's no evidence of that. Sad reality. I love Yishun! I'll call Wesley if I ever need a tour hehe.

      Thanks for watching and sharing these insights, Javi! It's really interesting to see parallels between Yishun and other Asian neighborhoods/cities. That's also really sad to hear about the stray cats being secretly killed off in PH. I wish there was a better system in place to handle the strays! And yes, call Wesley when you get to Yishun and he'll be a great guide for you!! Thanks again, Javi! Happy New Year!

    As a Singaporean, I can confirm that there are crazy things that happen in Yishun but not all the time, when its evening its very peaceful as a lot of people will go out and eat with their friends, family or relatives. Plus, the wet market people there are VERY FRIENDLY! You can bargain from 5 SGD to 3 SGD. The malay aunties are the most friendliest people there, in Singapore, especially Woodlands, people like to bargain a lot.

    Browsing through RUclips and found this video. I'm watching it and now I'm like......... YOU GUYS WALKED PASS MY HOUSE?!?! Yes I'm from Yishun and we have such a convenient neighborhood, we don't have to travel far to enjoy those facilities that others have
    I have old ladies below my block that mumble to themselves and there's one of them that insist you to call her a little girl ("xiaomei" in Mandarin) or else she starts scolding you in Hokkien (a dialect spoken here)
    So i understand how people see Yishun this way because even i have living examples right here, but they have never physically attacked anyone and everything else is fine
