I do not recall the exact date I saw this tribute to Mr. Chapin on Pbs -- perhaps the 90s. My next statement is without hyperbole. When Ms. Benetar had finished spinning her web of magic, I knew that I had witnessed one of the great performances in television history. I still feel this way in 2024. Brilliant lyrics. Incredible rendition. These lyrics could save a failing marriage... the understanding that men and women are two completely different beings. Find the unity when possible but let each one be strong in very different ways. Always leave some room for each one to breathe and keep some of their own identity. .

@@jackdillon5554 well thank you. I certainly do not feel brilliant but I do feel a deep passion for all things regarding love and understanding. Every generation…every era, has its distractions. The things that keep us from becoming exactly who we should be and loving exactly the way that we should love. This particular era is the worst that I’ve ever seen in my short life but this song brings me to a place that deals with the heart and the soul more than the likes and the followers. The romance of this song and HCC’s songwriting are quite possibly unparalleled.

Harry Chapin was a little before my time. In the early 90's, I stumbled onto a PBS fundraising event broadcasting a Memorial Concert (from '87) by mostly other artists to raise money in his name. Fantastic, and first heard this song movingly & stunningly sung by Pat Benatar.
I broke down as it was the story of my life told in 3 minutes -- and subsequently consumed Harry's entire ouvre. When I have trouble sleeping, I sing the long ballad "There Only Was One Choice" in hopes of falling asleep ...

The performance was part of a tribute and fund-raiser done at Carnegie Hall featuring Harry Chapin's life and songs. It happened seven years after his death (car crash at age 38). You can find the whole program on RUclips. Benatar's performance of Shooting Star is a true standout. She brings life to the song. It is stunning. Toward the end of the concert, there is a fine rendition of "Remember When the Music," sung by a young Bruce Springsteen. It too, is a hidden gem. Well worth searching out to get a listen. Graham Nash does a gentle rendition of "Sandy," a song Harry wrote for his beloved wife. There are also a few well placed recordings of Harry playing a few of his most famous songs.
