It's finally warm weather! This video is all about how to successfully bring your houseplants outside for the summer time. This is such an essential thing to do if you want to really experience some incredible growth. Watch this video to learn all the Do's and Do Not's of this process! #indoorplants #houseplants #gardening
I’m not sure if Devin mentioned this in the video but I wanted to offer some encouragement to anyone who’s put a plant outside, before hardening it off, and sunburned all of its leaves. In many cases, depending on the species, the plant will lose the leaves but still be alive. When I was younger, before I knew ANYTHING about plants, my parents had a huge split leaf philodendron (I think a Xanadu.) Anyway, when summer came around I used to haul it outside. All of its leaves would get sunburned and fall off. After about a month it would grow all new leaves. I just thought it was normal. I have since learned about hardening off, sun leaves, and The incredible adaptability of plants. Anyway, great video as usual! 😄🪴I can’t wait to start bringing The rest of my plants out (I already brought out my Meyer lemon, queen palm and Washingtonian palm…they just weren’t looking very happy indoors.)
love it!! thank you for sharing your experience and wisdom!
Wish I had known this last night. I put my large succulent arrangement outside yesterday. It got only a few hours of direct morning sun and already showing signs of sun damage. Keep the helpful info coming! And I starting using the fertilizer from your parents place and plants are loving it.
oh noooooo. over the coming week you will find more signs of sun damage. cut it out asap. then your plants will have the longest season possible to make new growth
My mother had a beautiful aloe in our home bathroom for many, many years. She gave it to me when I moved out (I was so honored), and I kept it healthy in my own bathroom for a couple years until one day while I was moving. I moved the aloe outside in the high heat of august, and she was pretty much gone by the next morning. I could never bring her back, broke my own heart. LEARNED THE HARD WAY. Thanks for sharing 🌱🙏
i too have learned the hard way!!
I live in Pensacola beach Florida and have a large shade garden area in my backyard so I’ve been working aggressively to find nice indoor plants that have a tropical vibe I can put in my garden for 8 months out of year then bringing in during cooler part of year. It really makes my tropical garden look so much better. Good tips especially about having pots with good drainage
i love hearing that! im sure you are creating a tropical paradise out there!!
Devin, let me say I appreciate finding you! I've been looking high and low for information with regard to the Rose of Sharon, but you seem to have more information in one place than others I have viewed.
In this video, you spoke of taking plants outside, and then using plant soap I think it is you have there well before you bring the plants back in. I did this with Boston fern. I had them outside where they did splendidly, but when winter came I thought it a good idea to bring them inside. At that time, I was not aware of fungus gnats. As you mention here, the fungus gnats found their way in other plants I had inside. This was 5 years ago, and I find from time to time I am still battling. Because of this I am afraid to bring plants inside, and this also makes me wary of taking plants outside from in. I agree with what you said with regard to plants doing well outside, and I would like for my plans to experience that burst of growth in order to live a healthy life. I was curious if you had any suggestions on how to finally get rid of fungus gnats inside? I have used Mosquito Bits, peroxide, and mean oil. If you have a video or something, could you please provide a link. I would so like to be rid of these things, and then that will show me what I also must do in order to save Boston ferns and other plants such as impatience from freezing to death. I will be more confident on how to deal with bringing them in properly .
I thank you for being here! I mean that!
Thanks for your great comment! The definitive solution to fungus gnats is using Bacilus thuringensis var. israelensis! I’ve purchased on Etsy before
Great info regarding the rain I've put containers out with saucers I will make sure they have no saucers so they don't sit in water. Thank you 🌻
yes absolutely, no saucers!
Right about the saucer , I have 2 rose bushes in pots . Took 1 off a few weeks ago & forgot to remove the other saucer 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ now I have a thick coat of rust on my rose 🥀 leaves 😢
Thank you for the helpful info. Take care and God Bless
thanks for watching!!
Informative and fun to watch! You have some beautiful plants!
Thanks for watching!
Great Video!!!!! Yes, temp is key! In Ohio, zone 5-6 mid may is best for decent temps. Right now we are still bouncing around from great temps 80s to 35. Most house plants will love it outside! My biggest problem last year was when I brought the plants back in in the fall, they did not like the transition and some died.
haha yes we are also bouncing around with temperatures like that!
Four days ago I put my collection outside so excited for them to be back out😊.I see a wedding ring😊 congratulations to you guys.Happy growing and stay safe.
thank youuuu
I'm glad you brought up the RAIN. That's definitely something people miss when they're new to growing outdoors! Even with drainage, when we have a couple of rainy days in a row, I'll bring some of my plants back in UNLESS they have a super well draining mix ( which most of my plants do now because I'm definitely an over waterer)
yes absolutely!!
Good video, Devin, you covered the topic thoroughly, even stressing the importance of preserving the leaf's outer layer. As I understand, the protective waxy outer layer, called the cuticle, does indeed thicken when you graduate from shade to part shade to part sun to sun. I found it necessary to do this every year on my sun-loving cycad collection, even if they had lived in full sun the year before; I theorize the cuticle got thinner over the winter indoors. Another way to graduate to more sun is to bring outside only during daytime, then bring back indoors at night if temps fall below 50 degrees.
very cool! thank you for sharing your experience and expertise Giardino!
Just discovered you, I am a new plant mom with some succulents 2 small cacti and a snake plant. Thanks for your info!!
Awesome!! I hope it helps
Beautiful plants that you have.
thank you!!
Beautiful plants
thank you!!
Damn you are so knowledgeable, pragmatic, and pleasantly didactic - so pleased I found your videos.
Thanks! I hope you find some of the other videos helpful!
Great information! I’ll bring my cactus’s & succulents out on my south facing deck. It’s super hot and most other plants don’t do well there. Thanks for a great video!
Thanks for watching Laurie!
Devin, congratulations on your RUclips Channel! It was recommended to me, and when I saw it was you, Devin from Roberta's on QVC, I hurriedly clicked the subscribe button. I have a few of you all's air plants, which I am enjoying. ❤️
Hiii!! Awesome!! I hope there is some good info in here!
I have a couple of begonias that I know grow bigger outside but I had trouble last Summer with pests attacking that even my trusty Neem oil applied often couldn't stop the damage. So they are going to stay in this Summer! Still a ways to go before anything goes outside for good here in Northern New Jersey. Been unseasonably cold at night.
yes we're getting some chilly nights this week so i just moved everything back in...again...
Thanks Devin My houseplants are all new so I think I better wait until next summer Lol!
hehe however you like!
Thank you for the tips since I just put my plants outside! Do you do your shopping online or at the store? Maybe you could do a video doing some plant shopping at some big box stores!
thats a great suggestion! i think that would be a fun video. check out my other video about where i buy my plants
Great tip with the cloth cover. I need to start acclimating my lime tree and it's way too big to move multiple times.
Ooh yeah I’ve had to move my huge Epiphyllum a few times and it’s not fun
It’s amazing what a few miles can do. I’m in central Pa and I won’t be able to take anything outside until mid May (or later). We are going back down to below freezing this week.
Wew child
yessss tonight it going to be freezing here too!
Thank you very much for your channel, I am learning so much!!!
thank you for watching!!
Devin, Great info! Thanks
Thanks for watching!
I live in Ohio and we still have very unstable temperatures day and night. I don't bring my plants out until night temperatures are steady at 50 or above even though they are under a covered porch . It is so tempting on a warm beautiful day to just bring them all out.. 😆 but I know better living here in Ohio it can turn fast 😏 and it a lot of work to cover or bring back in 100 or more plants that go out every summer. Lol. Its hard enough to worry about garden plants when temps dip.. burrr.. great vid!✌💙
i just officially brought mine out!
Great info! I will definitely be more careful 🌞 thanks
yes please take care!
Great video!
thanks for watching!!
Thank you, alot of great info.
thanks for watching!!
I just moved my snake plant to my screened in porch! I’ve been dealing with it having fungus gnats over the winter so I’m hoping this takes care of that!
nice! yes the outdoor environment should help with the gnats
Try a combo of the sticky stakes and mosquito bits for the gnats, they WILL go away.
Even tHe snarky ones. Lol
I have a rather large Traveler's Palm (Ravanala Madagascariensis) that I got online and suspect it was grown - I suspect - under a shade cloth down in south Florida. It looks like a large Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai). When I scoot it to direct sun, the leaves curled badly. So I've cut it back to only the central leaf and letting it get direct morning sun only and complete shade for the afternoon. My patio is east facing, so that's what I've got to work with. I guess, with only the central leaf exposed, it's only July 4, 2023 and it should be acclimated by the time it's fully unfurled. Try to picture my situation. What do you think?
What zone are you in? I’ve seen travelers palm grow in full sun in Medellin, Colombia where it is persistently warm year round. By cutting it back and allowing it to start over it should be good to go in the full sun right from the start
Hi I am in Philadelphia. I have two fiddle figs that I purchased from Lowes that were damaged. I want to bring them outside but I have squirrels that are ruthless.
they should be fine
I put 2 spider plants and a young monsters (regular) in my front porch. They'll always be in the shade. I'm not planning to put all my plans outside. They are doing great inside.
Awesome, sounds like you found a great spot
I'm scared to put my babies outside yet! Still to chilly in NY. I figured when the temperatures hit 70s and the nights hits at least 50s or 60s lol 😆
yes that sounds like the right plan to take!
Where do you buy your grow lights or the lamp shade? I have a bulb grow light 💡 but it’s too heavy to attach it to a lamp shade.
check out my amazon page! you can find the link in the description of the video
Have you done any videos on cutting plants back all the way? I have a struggling diffenbachia, it might benefit from a big cut back.
I have not! But I did just cut my diff all the way back to about 3”
I thought I'd give my big zz plant a bit of sun after the long winter under a grow light last week. It was a mistake. Most of the stems have developed a brown mottling that is apparently permanent. It's otherwise fine but I feel terrible for having damaged a plant I love.
awww ive done the same. better to cut them off now and let them regrow. they'll never heal. but the new growth will be fine
Great video! What do you think about taking orchids out for the summer?
totally! they'll loooove that change in day and night temperatures
@@plantvibrations Wonderful! Thanks for your reply.
Have a ponytail palm that is 3 yrs old . Am tempted to bring outside but NV heat is brutal. Will morning sun be enough?
oooh i would say it can for sure handle the heat but be very careful introducing it to the sunlight! keep it in a shaded area for at least a week before introducing any sunlight
What about the Do’s and Don’t when bringing plants back into the house, as far as bugs, etc.
will definitely make that video in the coming months!
Thank you so much for your video! I have a ZZ plant can I bring her outside or will the sun burn her?
you totally can! just keep her in a shaded spot!
I have a collection of about 150 plants and 99.9% of them go outside for the summer and they do not want to come home in fall. Granted, I live in the area with high humidity and heat. So my plants literally explode outside. I can’t wait to transfer they out!
BUT, I confess, there were a couple-three succulents got burned leaves in the past. Just because me being impatient…😕
wow that is amazing!!
EVERYTIME, I try to fertilize, I end up burning my plants ☹️. I fertilized my aeonium and bam the leave started turning black and so on. Any suggestions for baby succulents? I propped 100 roughly over winter.
that's really odd! can you dilute it more?
Where did you get those black circular grow lights?
check out my amazon page! you can find the link in the description
💕💕💕🙏🏿🙍🏿♀️
Can peace lilies handle either morning sun or full sun?
i wouldn't give them full sun, but you can acclimate them to morning sun, just do so gently
I just finished battling fungus gnats and have basically won the battle. I have a couple Jade plants that could benefit from being outside because their leaves are drooping and I think that’s because it needs more sun, is that true? I hesitate to take them outside because I know when I bring them in they will be infested with fungus gnats and I don’t want to bring those in to my other plants again. What do you suggest?
hi marsha! i would say the outside will help a lot with the gnats! the cool, damp environment of indoors is what allows them to thrive. and yes you are correct, placing the jade outside will help it spruce up. just make sure to gradually introduce it to the outdoors
Thank you so much! We live in St Louis so I’ll be very careful with the sun. We bought a bag of garden soil last year to re-plant our indoor plants, and it must have been infested with fungus gnat eggs. Because we had tons of them in the house and I don’t want to ever deal with that many again. They were very very hard to get rid of. I still have some but not many.
Where do I get a plantvypz shirt 😬
Hehehehe
So you can’t over fertilize??
Fertilizing once a month or so I good
Can I bring my rubber plant outside?
Yes absolutely!
