Thanks for the review! Debated on getting this lens for a while but super happy I did it is so useful on the RP, our only native option. I have the 50mm 1.8 and I am a more 50mm kind of guy but this is such a step up in usability from that. Here’s hoping they do a 1.4 in that price range with IS and a MF ring.
35mm on full frame is what I grew up on when using disposable film cameras, so it feels easy to compose shots with it. I have a 50mm lens too but it often feels too tight for snapshots.
@@kaspergaramThanks for your prompt answer. I saw in your video samples that there were no vignetting, but I wanted to hear/confirmation from the author (not from my assumption). Even I have 85mm 1.2, I was sold on those video samples. This 35mm is amazing. It creates (litterally) visuals bigger than life. Cheers.
So nice shots from Budapest where I grew up and where I still live. 😍 I am an amateur and just ordered an RP with this lens, going for a general purpose camera that is a nice image quality upgrade over my old 7D which served me very well but it's way too bulky for what I want from a camera. 🙂
Lol definitely not! I mean, it’s a great thing to have just in case, but it’s not a deciding factor for me at all. The reason I talk about it is that a lot of people do care about it
I use this on my R8 and it is an ideal match. Performance surpassing the cost on both. I don't get the complaints on STM's focusing. I do not shoot video (am a photographer, not a videographer) and have never had an issue with STM. For the record I have an R8 and an R10 (mainly for wildlife/sports although I enjoy using the R8 for that as well). So my kit is 16mm 2.8 STM, 28mm 2.8 STM, 35mm 1.8 STM, EF 50mm 1.8 (w/adapter), 85mm 2.0 STM, 24-105 7.1 STM, 55-250mm STM (w/adapter) and, lastly, the renegade RF100-400 USM. I have simply not encountered focus issues with my STM lenses. (In case anyone is wondering I have that 55-250 STM (a throwback from my DSLR days) to match with the R10 when I need a lightweight combo for sports/wildlife etc. I am in my 70s, have had multiple[le hand surgeries from repetitive motion (playing music - not what you may be thinking! LOL). I actually started with the R7 but honestly it just proved too heavy with the 100-400 F8 USM so went with the R10. Am very happy with it and the R8. Sorry for this being so long but the pinot noir kicked in but every word and sentiment is truth!
@@thatpovguy thanks for the comment! Must have been a good bottle of pinot noir 😂👌 when it comes to the STM, for photos it’s perfectly fine, but if you’ve used USM lenses, it’s a whole lot worse. But with these lenses, you’re really comparing something very good to something even better. Always have to complain if there’s a better option available 😂
@@kaspergaram Well the pinot has worn off (only had a couple of glasses anyway.) I started serious photography around 1968 using systems ranging from 35mm SLR and rangefinder to medium format TLRs and SLRs to 4x5 view cameras and finally hitting digital (happy to be away from a darkroom!) I have used a lot of various camera focus mechanisms ranging from my hands (aka manual) to "9 point autofocus to Dual Pixel CMOS AF II. And corresponding lenses including my current suite of STMs and my sole USM. I have run the gamut and honestly I don't understand what kind of photography you do to say STM is "a whole lot worse" than USM. Can you not get proper exposure and sharpness with an STM lens? Can you not achieve correct focus with an STM lens? I know my RF100-400 USM performs wonderfully for wildlife with either the R10 or the R8. But the 55-250 STM does keep up on the R10 (and is delightfully light!) What exactly is "a whole lot worse" about these STM lenses? I am genuinely curious. Thanks! 👌
@@thatpovguy ah, i’m not talking about photography. For photos is perfectly fine. Never had any issues with STM while taking photos. For videos, it’s a different story. Once again, it is definitely not bad in videos either. It’s just not as fast, not as quiet, not as reliable as USM. It falls behind in every aspect you can think of, and if you need super clean audio from close to the lens, you will hear the STM motors but you won’t hear the USM motors.
@@kaspergaram Ahh - But I DID say in my initial post " I do not shoot video (am a photographer, not a videographer) and have never had an issue with STM." Have some pinot! :)
I love it. The IS is great for handheld video. The size is great for travel. The focal length is not wide enough to show a full room in a regular home though. And yes, the focusing gets pretty slow in videos
i just got it last week on nice sale. it is my first ever prime (excepting manual ones) and i think it will stay very, very much of a time on my camera. your review is spot on, nothing to add, but.. :) i just disagree on macro auto focusing, autofocusing on macro can be important when shooting kids, like i did yesterday :).. and then you just have to be lucky, to get the focus on time, and right place. but for 400eur.. it is great deal! totally agree on aberrations , vigneting.. photography is about the moment, about motive.. this lens has more than good image quality.. i love it and i am excited to use my camera again, since previously i had just 28 70 which is super large and heavy for every day usage :)
Thanks a lot for the comment! ✌️ absolutely love how you brought up the point about auto focusing. There’s obviously scenarios that are ”out of the ordinary” where you might need features that aren’t that important for most use cases. Same thing about the chromatic aberration and vignetting. In some cases, for example metallic product photos, you just can not have any chromatic aberration at all. But as you said, for 400€ this lens is just incredible 👌
I know how you feel, but IMO the non-L RF lenses have been surprisingly good. With EF lenses I thought exactly the same, but I don’t think it’s the case with RF
I've been shooting with L lenses for a long time and when I got the Canon 35 1.8, I was blown away with the image quality and fast auto-focus. It's now my favorite non-L lens from Canon. (Also tried the RF 24 1.8 and RF 16 2.8 - disappointed and sold them both.)
If you could only choose one focal length to use for the rest of your life, what would it be? 🤔

50mm 1.2
after watching this video, I think it would be the 35mm, because it has the features of a zoom lens (wide, middle, macro) in a prime one.
@@mynkao i absolutely love the 35mm!
I like this video. No time lost, only useful informations and wise opinions. Well done! 👍

Thanks for your review. very useful. You talked about the vignetting about photos. Can you share if there’s the same vignetting ‘issue’ about videos?
@@mynkao thank you 😊 the vignetting is not as bad for videos, because the 16x9 aspect ratio crops out the bad parts

Thanks. I can't wait to get my hands on it. 🤤

Great video - would this lens be suitable for a talking head? in a video podcast?
Great video! I use my RF 35mm f1.8 STM more than my RF 50mm f1.8 STM. 😅👍🏽
I’ve always preferred 35mm over 50mm for most things actually 🤔
@@kaspergaram35mm is a much more practical all day focal length than 50mm. 50mm is highly regarded for portraits but not as useful as 35mm.

How will it perform on an R7 compared to the 24mm 1.8?
I’m sorry but I haven’t used the R7 nor the 24mm. I would guess it’s more of a matter pf opinion ion which focal lemgth you want
Even I have the same combination, R7 with 24mm 1.8.
A lot of compromises for $500…

Sorry but once you use a L lens going back becomes a road of disappointment.
I know how you feel, but IMO the non-L RF lenses have been surprisingly good. With EF lenses I thought exactly the same, but I don’t think it’s the case with RF
Ultimately the photographer's knowledge and skill is the primary ingredient. The equipment is secondary.
