- An epic tale of betrayal and justice. Based on a true story on the last trial by combat in France's history, The Last Duel arrives in cinemas soon. #TheLastDuelPH
From Twentieth Century Studios and visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott comes “The Last Duel,” a gripping tale of betrayal and vengeance set against the brutality and female oppression of 14th century France. The historical epic, which is based on actual events depicted in “The Last Duel” by Eric Jager, stars Oscar® winner Matt Damon and two-time Academy Award® nominee Adam Driver as quarreling lords, both of noble birth, whose grievances must be resolved in a duel to the death. The film, which also stars Oscar winner Ben Affleck and Emmy® winner Jodie Comer, is directed by four-time Academy Award nominee Ridley Scott from a screenplay by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Oscar nominee Nicole Holofcener. “The Last Duel” is produced by Scott, Kevin Walsh, Jennifer Fox and Holofcener with Damon, Affleck, Madison Ainley, Drew Vinton and Kevin Halloran serving as executive producers.

Literally the last duel...that last fighting scene is just epic. I almost had a heart attack watching the scene. Fantastic movie... Jodi Comer was outstanding...and the story telling was unique ❤️
I know! I watched it like I was there! Edge of my seat. Great movie indeed
Absolutely epic! I think I did not breathe during duel scene.
They really should make more medieval epic blockbuster movies like this
They used to
Unfortunately this becoming a box office bomb really hurts the chances of that happening. Really too bad because it's a great movie and more medieval epics would be awesome
If youre thinking about seeing this, do it. Movie was great.
I’ve been excited ever since hearing about it being filmed. It’s sad it didn’t get the views it deserved, but Ridley Scott blaming millennials for its “bombing” is ridiculous.
Was it better than braveheart 1995 ??
@@llrainll He's not wrong though. Cinema has turned into CGI Marvel crap. Most haven't the attention span to watch good movies these days.
@@llrainll That is indeed ridiculous. I’m a millennial, and I loved it, as did many of my peers.
@@zekkez That is true- in terms of it turning into “Marvel Crap”. But it’s going back into classic, now that I’ve noticed. And maybe you’re on about Gen Z.
Great, GREAT MOVIE. Just back from the movie theater and still cannot calm down
Probably Covid reduced the box office numbers. Just read a headline that the movie flopped in Europe and Asia. Trailer looks great.
This movie was absolutely gut wrenching I loved it! The actors were stunning!
Jesus Christ, that's Jason Bourne
👏😂
How this got zero nominations, especially for Comer, is mind-blowing. My personal favorite film of 2021.
It's not "diverse enough"

This was an absolutely fantastic movie! It's the kind of movie you think about for a long time after you see it. Worth seeing twice or more
Exactly
Jodie Comer gives an Oscar winning performance!👍👏👏😍
Plot summary: Jac and Jean went up the hill to dual with one another, Jac fell down and Jean didn’t stick around and Marguerrite lived happily ever after 😊

I haven’t heard of this movie until Riley Scott started bitching that no one is watching it lmao

What a pity that good movies aren’t profitable and so movie watchers only have garbage like the superhero of the week genre left . The Flash and the new Indiana Jones have both been panned. Last Stars Wars series have been a yawn. LOTR or The Hobbit wouldn’t have been made today. Not enough sex or violence. Nor would the great character-driven movies of the 90s- mid 2000s. Hollywood is feeding the public pablum because it’s more cost effective. And the younger generations with disposable income aren’t going to movie theaters. And really, who can blame them? They don’t know what it’s like to spend Friday nights at the movies with friends, after catching dinner at the mall. Movie theaters are failing. Most kids today will wait until a particular movie shows up on a streaming service. This day and time, in larger cities, you take your life in your hands because of crime, when you visit the mall. It’s not worth the expense or danger.
What happened?
Amazing movie. One of the best in last couple of years
Someone has to stir up some interest. Produce a quality, epic and just stand by while no one sees it? Scott has a point. Maybe a victim of covid release and poor marketing, not sure...
This is the drug we Game of Thrones addicts need so badly!!! Looks beautiful!!!!👑
A trailer for house of the dragon just dropped today
This is like a scene / part of game of thrones… the female Danisi or Calisi needs to be in this movie
Was it any good? I imagine so.
@@swisscheeseplease97 it's fantastic... just watch it...
She is just amazing
The perfect actress this role she was brilliant in the white princess
I love in the first scene (saw on fandango, they show the 1st 4 minutes) the cathedral under construction, scaffolding around it, looking like a skyscraper being built. Brilliant, amazing touch to make it feel contemporary to us, even though that is completely historically accurate anyway. It underscores that the 13th century also had science and engineering in addition to their religious worldview, and just like in our world we straddle these two ways of thinking, empiricism and religious tradition (what many call “myth”)… We look above for moral bearings and inspirations, yet must have practical mundane measures to run our lives, hopefully informed by morality. I think this similarity or continuity is a theme, overcoming the artificial distinction between the premodern, Medieval world and ours. I haven’t seen the film yet, but already so excited to see it.
Dig in ... it's soooo long. War of attrition just getting halfway through ...
Just sayin' ...
I stand by my point, having seen the film: the cathedral under construction image seems pretty exactly to symbolize all those points I tried to make (straddling dichotomies of modernity and pre-modernity; science/empiricism and religious consciousness/faith), all to underscore continuity between that world and ours, while being historically faithful to the period.
But all this perhaps above all, showing a theme of trying to create a connective channel between earth and heaven, so that our doings down here can transcend mere animality and physicality, and partake of the spiritual and divine justice and truth. The cathedral as an edifice embodies this, but as the film shows, so does the medieval duel as a trial by combat. Each merges science/empiricism and religious consciousness/faith to achieve this bridge or conduit. Accordingly, both the duel and the cathedral function both naturalistically-scientifically and spiritually. (As the story shows, the duel, trial by combat, operates on these two planes by inviting a divine judgment, but also by relying on the guilty party and the rightful party to perform as their inner conscience permits, a presumption the guilty one will choke, and the upright one to fight with the confidence of one in the right. All this mirrors the Cathedral as a spiritual building seeming to transcend gravity, but relying on the scaffolding and buttresses. In each case, the roles of science and spiritual forces are ultimately unknown, perhaps a bit “in the eye of the beholder.” But the final epigram presented at the film’s conclusion, showing the victor died in a Crusade expedition shortly later, teases us with the idea that perhaps he was guilty despite winning the duel. And we don’t know who the boy’s father is. In the end, the story turns us back on ourselves to decide what we believe, and why.I think the movie did all this very successfully.
But I must admit, I found the Rashamon retelling quite tedious!!!! For all my complimentary comments, I felt the movie dragged on and on and on, as I imagine many feel about my comments! But you get mine for free and can leave any second you want, no loss!😀
Those tall buildings must seem like God built them himself.
After the pyramids, the next tallest thing built was the Efieffel Tower in Paris.
THEN the Brooklynn Bridge in Manhatten NY.
That's how flat the world is back then.
Anything 100 feet tall is a monster. I have several pine trees over a hundred feet at my house. 10 stories.
@@SuperChuckRaney and of course the Tower of Babel in the Bible is a fundamental symbol of engineering threatening to, or seeming to, “conquer the Heavens.” Definitely is one of the most powerful initial “idolatry” motifs in the Bible.
The movie of the year.
Matt Damon deserves a trillion Oscars!
He was exceptional!
Written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck no less...first writing collaboration since Good Wil Hunting
If Adam driver were to fight Matt Damon in real life in medieval armor I would put all my money on Adam driver. He’s tall big and muscular and an ex marine. Matt Damon as much as I like him doesn’t have the comparable body nor warrior heritage.
It actually lines up pretty nicely with the actual event this is based on.
Adam Drivers character rape Jodie Comer’s character. Driver’s character had a lot of powerful friends and the courts wouldn’t find him guilty.
Matt Damon’s character is Comer’s husband and is a broke knight, but he challenges Driver’s character to a duel. Drivers character is much larger and heavily favored to win.
Honestly it’s a fascinating event. Can’t wait to see the movie!
What the hell are you talking about? Matt Damon is Jason Bourne. The end. Lol
Spoken like a dumb materialistic modern. The outcome depends on who’s in the right.
Goddamn Ridley Scott can make a beautiful looking film. The story has me intrigued. But the cinematography, production design and Scott’s direction itself is what stands out. It looks amazing. He’s really on fire lately. I just found out about this by chance while checking out his House of Gucci trailer. Which also looks great, but this one got me excited to head back to the cinema!
Last of the Mohicans bombed at movie theatres also. Master and Commander at The Far Side of The World was a sleeper too.
It's a MeToo flick.
That war scenes are cool, but the whole middle of the film is barf.
Damn this looks so epic!!! Matt looks like a beast! Adam just as beastly! Jodie looks like she's about to give us some of the greatest acting of 2021! Ben, once again playing a phenomenal role! Absolute perfect cast selection! My favorite genre of film as well. I'm beyond excited for this!!!💯⚘⚘⚘
Everything is bang on except you forgot to mention Matt Damon’s epic mullet in your review
Sometimes I feel like Matt Damon and Ben Afleck just get stoned as fuck and their conversation goes like this...
Ben: ''....duuuude, did you ever see Braveheart?''
Matt: ''Fuck yeah bro, it was epic.''
Ben: ''...yeah, but Mel Gibson just like...ruined historical truth with pop fiction.''
Matt:...''Yeah...but the princess was fuckin' hot...sooo?''
Ben: ...''True but you ever thought...w-we....could, ya know...do a historical movie?''
Matt...''No...but fuck it...lets do it. ALEXA...NAME A RANDOM HISTORICAL MOMENT WE COULD MAKE A MOVIE ABOUT.''
Ben: ''I'll call my agent.''
I loved the book that documented this story! Can't wait to see the film!

This movie… WOW. Incredible
“Coming Soon”
That’s ok. I can wait
It was a very good movie. I hope they make more medieval films in modern day. For those who haven’t seen it I watched it at 4am thinking it was going to put me to sleep. It woke me right up with adrenaline and genuine interest I didn’t go to bed till 7am because I didn’t want to stop it.
C’mon, this guy stopped a blaster bolt in mid air with his hand.
What the effect used in opening shot ??
I would 100% recommend reading Jaeger's book first. The movie looks like the history has obviously been tailored for a modern cinema audience. The principle reason for a judicial duel was to allow god to rule, the principle being he would not aid a guilty party.
This method of justice was already pretty obselete by the 1380s when this incident happened. However, to understand 14th C Europeans properly, you first and foremost need to understand the influence of god, the church and the division between the secular and temporal world.
The book is also very gripping and you can understand Jean's deep frustration having returned from a failed campaign in Scotland, broke, ill and weak, to face the contempt of those who had remained at home. The feud long predated the event that led to the duel.
I plan to check out the book, you do make it sound quite intriguing. However can you at least allow yourself to admire the art and potential this movie may carry. I feel like it will definitely be one of the leading best movies of 2021 🤔
@@robertjames7438 let's wait and see
Thanks from dropping the author's name off boom shopping I go.
The movie actually follows Jaeger’s book closely, including the friendship-turned-feud between Le Gris and Carrouges that led up to the duel. Incredible movie, based on a fascinating, well-written book and true story

Great movie must watch
Please let this be as good as Gladiator.
DONT BE STUPID
I predict better. Ridley Scott is very very smart, the kind who always learns and grows over time. Gladiator was wonderful, but even that I felt was kind of flawed. I didn’t find the purported recreation of ancient Roman society and institutions and characters convincing, for example the prominent racial themes in the movie seemed too modern in how they were presented. I thought Kubrick’s presentation of that world seemed more authentic, probably because based on Howard Fast source material; this being based on a well researched actual history, I trust Ridley Scott to successfully draw on the strengths of that historical account. Gladiator I think was mostly just a modern-style revenge story similar to Ben Hur and a little bit like the Jean Valjean-Javert conflict in Les Miserables, on which Scott overlaid ideas about Roman social and military cultural principles pertaining to its aristocratic-military-imperial code of virtue. It seemed kind of fake and contrived, though I enjoyed it and Russell Crowe’s Joachim Phoenix’s and the other performances. I think Mr. Scott will make the history seem more authentic this time.
@@AnonYmous-ry2jn Gladiator is a all time classic. Whereas Last Dual is a decent but not great film by Scott.
Affleck and Damon don't have the look or the acting ability to successfully lead a medieval action drama set in Europe. They aren't a Russell Crowe!
Adam Driver was a excellent choice though as one of the actors though. Pity two other excellent actors weren't picked to replace the leads Affleck and Damon.
