And then I watched this version. It's not perfect, but it's a hell of a lot better than the other one.
I think all these years later it's finally getting the credit it deserves. It was ahead of it's time

In the theatrical version, they cut out alot to shorten the movie , but cut a lot of what made the movie make sense. This version made it much better
This movie is so underrated, though not without its faults. Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, & Jeremy Irons are perfect castings. Heck I even like this more Zuckerberg inspired Lex Luthor. While there are other incarnations of these classic characters I prefer, this one is still really fun and stylized
My only gripe is we didn’t get enough Mercy Graves (Lex’s assistant). She’s such an awesome character in the comics/cartoons, but never did anything here, despite a great actress playing her
She was likely going to be in the next Superman movie which is now cancelled. Everyone wants Henry Canvill but geniuses at DC are recasting.
The funny thing is this is Alexander Luther which is not the one that Mercy works for, this is the one that tried to save the multiverse in the Crisis on Infinite Earths comics.

the theatrical version was edited differently, some parts were moved around and the extra footage in this version adds a lot of information on the reasoning behind clark's obsession with batman. it solves a lot of plotholes the theatrical version had as well, it's overall a much better movie. Next is wonder woman. after that it's zack snyder's justice league. it's a long one, better to be watched as a miniseries! and then you have aquaman as well.

A History of Violence, Into the Spider-Verse, Winter Solider, Dredd, Infinity War, Spider-Man 2, Sin City, Hellboy, Men in Black, Logan, Sucide Squad, The Crow, and When the Wind Blows would definitely be above this film. Idk just too many iconic comic book movies that blow it out of the water.

@@CRTV1997 Yep The Men in Black was an American comic book made up of 6 issues from 1990 to 1991. It was originally published by Aircel Comics who would later be bought out by Malibu Comics, which itself was bought out by Marvel Comics.
Once the film dropped in 1997 Marvel started pumping out tie in Comics while Men in Black: The Series released the same year. So technically Man in Black is a comic book movie.

The Russian guy with the tattoos was KGBeast. A Batman villain which has appeared a couple of times in the comics.
Mostly known as Anatoly Knyazev a Batman's villain and Green Arrow's villain/friend
The warehouse scene where Batman rescues Superman's mother is one of my favorite scenes in this film. This fight scene with the goons is the best choreographed fight scene of any live-action Batman film to date!
Plus, Affleck as the Bat has the physical presence and bulk that we only see in comic books. Batfleck is the perfect representation of Batman come to life straight from the pages of the comics! He is my favorite live-action Batman.
I never thought Ben Affleck would have such an impression on me, but he has. This Batman genuinely inspires fear to the criminals of Gotham more than any other Batman interpretation I've ever seen. He is legit believable. -OG

A lot of what was added back into this version was the build up. Some of the biggest issues with the theatrical version was that certain plot points weren't fleshed out enough, superman/Clark didn't have enough screen time, and Lex's plan didn't make much sense.
The version added to Clark's investigation of Batman, it fleshed out Lex's plan a bit more, and the plot over all flows better.
The theatrical of BVS cut important parts of story, like the Clark investigating, most of the subplot of the shooting in Africa and Lois investigation and build up to the third act, while they kept the action scenes, it felt most as a Batman POV and rushed conflict while here you can feel more in Superman's side with all the context.
so glad this came up on my recs, haven't rewatched bvs in a couple years but it's a tearjerker every time. beautiful film

Batman is the best
Theatrical version cuts were heavy on Lane’s investigation, Luthor’s scheams to pit Superman and Batman against each other.
The WB movie exec didn't want a 3hour movies so they had it cut down for theaters. Most of what was left out were things that helped explain the plot and character motivations. Without them somethings seem to just come out of nowhere and got the movie roasted by critics. The theatrical cut had the African woman testify against Superman but omitted the parts that she got paid to lie and her seeing Luthor's men coming to clean up that mess and her trying to recant her story. Also part of Lois's discovery of her investigation about the desert incident was left out, so Lex's plan seemed random . Not that the plan isn't convoluted but it explained it better.
Overall the ultimate edition ties the story together better and fleshes some details out for movie audiences.
FYI: The movie is a combination of two comic book stories.
1) The Dark Knight Returns - which is the inspiration for a lot of the Batman v Superman fight scenes .
2) The Death of Superman - which is the inspiration for the Super-heroes v Doomsday (the monster)
Both stories have been adapted into animated movies by the way if you need something else to . The Dark Knight Returns adaption is very faithful to the comic book. The Death of Superman movies (there are two different ones) take a lot more liberties. The later one is better than the first.

Its first critics made us forget this masterpiece of the Snyderverse, everything because of the meme "Save Martha".
I can't believe they are replacing Henry as Superman there is no need to replace him.
The theatrical edition of BvS cut a lot of the 'build-up' before the final fights, especially the motivations for Clark and Lex. I'm excited for you to watch the sequel of Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)! It is the superior directors cut of this DC saga!
Some of the scenes not in the theatrical version are:
The Africa scene was shorter, including the name drop of Jimmy Olsen (he's just a CSI agent)
Clark's investigation into Batman was completely taken out, so the scene of him speaking with the "widow" & being manipulated into thinking he's more bad than good were taken out
The knife stabbing at the jail wasn't in the film (which was likely why the scene I mentioned above was taken out)
The scene after the Capitol explosion of Superman helping people was taken out and made to look like he just left.
The fight between Superman and Batman was shorter.
Lois'investigation into the bullet was severely edited, taking out Jena Malone's character and her reveal that the wheelchair was made of lead (in the theatrical it's just Lois who is told by the General about the bullet being made by LexCorp.
That's all I can think of as some of the edits were also made to keep it PG-13. This versions Rated R.
I will say Snyder recently remastered this film as the one you watched has a coloring issue.

The theatre version was cut down by 30 mins and that made it a prob for the audience to connect the build up ...
I think the issue people had with Batman and Superman is more about the writing around their situations leading to them becoming what they are. Superman isn't just "brooding" and such, but is still a young superhero who got his suit the same week he fought an S-tier villain. This is Batman who has worked for years and (in this version) lost his first adopted son Dick Grayson, leading to him being more violent. If anything, Doomsday is a 4th-movie villain, not a second. Superman's story in the Snyderverse was rushed, and Doomsday looks too lame. Should have had the bone look from the beginning rather than looking like an ape.
This is, at least by casting, may favorite Batman and Superman, controversially.
I'm sad they killed off Mercy Graves in this movie. She could have brought more to the franchise.
They could just say Lex names all his assistants Mercy Graves.
In the comics, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are known as the DC trinity

You should definitely watch Wonder Woman next followed by Justice League Zack Snyder Edition.
Though the Justice League film can probably be split into a three partner since it's so long. Luckily the director splits the movie into parts so it's easier to digest.

That extra 30mins that Warner Bros decided to cut is basically 30mins of context and story beats. It helped connect major plot elements for determining each character’s motivations for pursuing the things that would ultimately bring them together. The guy with the tattoos was Aquaman. Zack Snyder; because Warner Bros was in a hurry to “do Marvel” basically tasked him with introducing the Justice League in a single film. Something near impossible to do but with all things considered he actually did the best job possible I think anybody could do.
People don't pick up on Clark about to use his frost breath when doomsdays heat vision blows him back

I took my ex gf to see bvs in the cinemas &she burst into tears at the end when Clark sacrifices himself.. it's one of my favourite CBMs ever

The ultimate edition of Batman v Superman has a lot more context about what's going on politically in the investigation 🔎 on Superman and behind Lex Luthor, Jr. and just so much more. It's just better all around. The devil is in the details, and the details give you context to understand critical points. It's not just extra pointless footage. -OG
You know hé came back to life richt in the movie after this one
They cut out most of Gotham (scratch card, Clark going to Gotham investigating), Superman saving people at the hearing/explosion. Also less of the witness lady who got pushed into the subway. (the dirt at the end you can forget about -if there was no sequel it was meant to give some hope.) But for now no hope going onward. Also less of Luthor in the chamber at the end, you didn't get to see the alien and the 3 box things. Also more of the beginning with Lois investigating. It (theatrical version) left out a lot of useful information.
Only recently saw the Ultimate Edition, the action is all pretty much the same. It was mostly the buildup that was added. The scenes in the desert at the beginning when Superman saves Lois are extended so you get to see her interaction with Jimmy Olsen before he is killed off, in the theatrical version this part was shorter. You didn't see the mercenaries using the flamethrower to burn the bodies to frame superman. Also some of the scenes with the african woman who was due to testify were cut. The scenes where Henry Cavill is frying eggs and sees the african woman on tv talking about superman was changed and instead he see's a report about batman branding criminals and the courthouse scene is cut slightly so you don't see him bring out the woman and hand her over to the medic after the explosion. The scene where Clark goes to visit the african woman and talks to a few of her neighbours who mention about not being out after dark because of the Batman, that scene is cut from the theatrical version too. They cut around 30 minutes in total from the movie which were mostly from the buildup not the action sequences.
Personally I wasn't that bothered by the cuts they made as all my favourite scenes in the movie are in the theatrical version and it gets to those scenes more quickly, so I was happy enough with that version.
Bruce Wayne failed to save Martha, but he saved someone else's Martha.
Next one is not really Justice League (you can if you want) some people may tell you to watch Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad first. Whatever you do, when you do watch Justice League, watch Zack Snyder's Justice League 2021 not the 2017 version.

The theatrical cut is really just a nonsensical version of the ultimate edition. It completely removes all of Clark’s investigation into Batman and how violent he’s become, and in doing so it removes Clark’s motivation to oppose Batman so their conflict has no weight behind it on Clark’s side. It also removed a lot of Lex’s manipulation of events so things just happen for no reason. For example in the theatrical cut, Clark is at Lex’s party for seemingly no reason. It has nothing to do with his story or journey and it’s really abrupt and odd. On the other hand, in the ultimate edition Lex specifically requests that Clark come to his party so that he can meet Bruce and begin to sow the seeds of animosity between them

You ask why Henry? Because it happened in the comic books. One of the best selling comic books of all time. I absolutely love this film. It has so many layers and themes to it, you wouldn’t really expect from it.

Next, you need to watch the Wonder Woman movie. Then Zack Snyder's 4 hour long Justice League. Trust me. It's well worth the watch. You can probably divide it into two 2-hour video watches. Then you can watch the Aquaman movie! -OG

My favorite thing is that Lex Luther absolutely knew who Batman really was from the jump and introduced Clark to him. Knowing full well that was Superman and knew the biggest threat to him wasn't the strongest superpowered superhero it was the richest, ruthless, human wearing a costume. Because Batman is that much of a problem.

As people have said the main stuff is still there, but the extra details and scenes really change the whole movie. I can’t watch the theatrical version anymore…
You can watch Wonder Woman and then go into Zack Snyder’s Justice League. It’s not necessary but if you want to know more about the character and what she’s about it would be nice
it's not about "choosing" who to save. it's about saving who you can. These people are insensitive. if it was a non super hero who saved someone but not everyone would they be blaming him for all those he "chose" not to save??? its a logic problem where the movie argument fails.
To this day, nobody has been able to do the dual identity of Clark Kent/Superman as well as Christopher Reeves did it. Henry Cavill is an awesome Superman, but his Clark Kent is just lazy writing/directing. "Just throw a pair of glasses on Cavill.".
Next to watch Zack Snyder's Justice League(2021). Picks up directly from BvS and is 4 hours long. Avoid the butchered theatrical cut from 2017. ZSJL is the only version to watch.

The version you just watched is the version the director, zack Snyder, intended. The studio messed with his film as well as the film that follows this - Justice league.
If you want to see what happens with Superman, watch the 4 hr cut of zack Snyder’s Justice league.

You should check out Transformers, some channels have reacted to the Bayverse movies and Bumblebee, you’d probably like them but love Bumblebee a lot! Start with the Bayverse films though, it’s worth it!
