An Excel histogram chart is very easy to make. However it's not always clear when to use a histogram chart or how to adjust it to your needs. Generally, histogram charts are often confused with bar charts. They're very different though. A histogram groups continuous data into ranges, also called bins. The height of each bar shows how many fall into each bin. A histogram is the most commonly used graph to show frequency distributions for data with large value ranges.
In this video I'll show you how you can easily setup a histogram chart in Excel from scratch. We'll also cover how we can customize the bins and format the chart professionally.

Hi Leila. I’m writing to you for the very first time. I really love your videos. Your style of explanation and bringing examples completely fits my way of understanding. Thank you a lot. Coming back to the topic, I’d like to ask you if you can show how to create a histogram chart that shows how big the values on the vertical axis and what shares of the total amount the values stand for on the horizontal axis. The practical use of it is very convenient when we are talking about marketing data for a set of products in a product line and their sales levels. So I’d like to see what share out of the total product line a certain product has (on the horizontal axis) and what sales level in dollars this product stands for (on the vertical axis). The specific thing is that the width of each column must correspond to its share value.

Hi Leila. Thanks for the video. Very helpful. On a standard chart, if you add a Chart Title, you can link it to a cell on the worksheet. On the Histogram Chart, this seems to not work. You can only type text in manually.. no worksheet link. Seems like a bug. Of course, you can add a Text Box, link it to a cell and then Group the Text Box and Chart together. But, would be nice if the Histogram Chart natively supported Chart Title cell links. Histogram charts are great visualizations. I use them often to show the distribution of tenants with different lease rates in a commercial building.. just one of many uses. Thanks for the Thursday Histogram Chart fun :)) Thumbs up!

I mostly use the histogram chart in Excel to do quick and dirty visualizations of long datasets or when I need to get an intuitive sense of the distribution of a variable in a Monte Carlo simulation. As someone else mentioned, there are formatting issues with the native chart, so if I'm outputting something into a report or what not, I'll go back to a column chart as that allows for more formatting flexibility.

I’m a DJ using histograms to visualize track quantity by beats-per-minute (BPM). It’s useful to spot multiple modes in a large playlist and the BPMs above or below which you’ll have trouble finding another track to mix with (e.g., +/- 4 BPMs usually). Thanks!

This is a great new feature. Thanks for showing. I am confused by bin width though. It would appear that the first bin will always be bigger as it will include the lower and upper value assigned to it. 30k and 110k in your example. The next bin is smaller (very slightly in your case) as it will not include anyone with 30k. My data is with ages of students at a college where the error is more pronounced, as the first bin is 18-21 and the second is 21-24. The first bin includes students who are either 18,19,20,21 and the second bin only three 22,23,24. Thoughts?

    Leila,
I use custom views a lot in excel, they save time and memory because you dont need multiple tabs to show each view. That being said, is there a third party tool to allow for multiple selections versus having to check the check box individually ? I sometimes have groups in hundreds of rows I wish to filter, it is time consuming, tedious. I wish Microsoft would address and fix this problem.
Can't they make the check boxes multi-selectable like google does with gmail emails ?

Could you, if you haven’t, talk to the excel vs other options?
What you see as the future of excel (not going anywhere or dying out?
I’m not thinking so much about google sheets. More, when I look at productivity stuff, which I’ve used excel for...seems like theirs apps that are meant to be better/easier?
Not just project management. I’d use excel for budgets, or customer management, or just personal lists. Nowadays it seems like theirs an app for all these things and more.
How do you see excel in that light?
    And, also the future generally
