I know its an old video, thank you for sharing this knowledge with us. I'm currently building my first Vanquish and the manual does not list the second clip. This video probably saved me hours of messing around. Thanks again
This was unbelievably helpful. I would have been second guessing myself if I had only used the manual. This was also just a lot more fun. You couldn't have made this video any better. You saved me a ton of time and I appreciate that. Thank you.
Perfect informative video. Had one of the large e-clips still resting in my parts tray after supposedly completing the assembly; so, had to do a partial teardown to add that e-clip. Would suggest that both e-clips be installed per Page 12 in the Instruction Manual; and, not one per Page 12 and the other per Page 13. That would have saved me from missing one. Thanks again.
Fantastic. Thank you. Dissapointed in vanquish they couldn't include grease, they don't even tell you what type of grease to use in the instructions. Easily found but I'd like the OEM to specify what type/kind and how much grease to apply with my transmission kit. It also mentions an "included cross wrench" to tighten the nut for the slippers. I have plenty of tools, it's just attention to detail, like putting revision #'s and dates on their manual. I never use them but a parts list and tools needed are usually listed on most higher end items. Just what I noticed and was thinking of people that arent "handy". You taking the time to make and edit this video to this level of detail I hope Vanquish is giving you a stipend 🤣🤣Thank you VERY much.
So appreciative of this video. I was a hard core nitro racer for years so I can wrench, but these directions were less than stellar, and I hate not knowing if something is 100% right. Your vid saved my build. Trans build take 2. Lol
This transmission is a brilliant design, with one exception: The gaskets for the shifter arms don't seal at all. Dust, dirt, mud, sand, and especially water will go straight through them and eventually ruin the transfer case gears and bearings. With all the effort put into designing this thing, I don't understand why such an important detail got so little attention. If it just used molded, accordion-style shifter boots, the transfer case could be made completely waterproof. I was considering this transmission for a future build, but I hesitate to spend almost $200 on a drivetrain that'll self-destruct in most environments.
Awesome video, this is my first Vanquish machine and I am thoroughly impressed with the quality of everything, I did have one issue though. My kit came with the machine gear upgrade and the gears were not correct, had doubles of two gears and missing the two main gears that connect to the slide dogs.
This was incredibly helpful. I followed along and got mine built. Thank you for your help and thank you very much for your time and effort in making this video!
Think 638 oz. Is enough for the dig, lol have to use that servo since It was the only one I had that used 25t horns, lmao, can't wait for my missing parts to finish my Phoenix
I figured out where the 2nd eclip went although the instructions never said to install it (it just magically shows up installed in later steps). I came here to find out why I have an extra pin so thanks Harley Designs for answering that in the comments. I'm not sure why the box says it has a 3 position dig and a 3 position OD yet though. I'm guessing you put both to center for 2wd?
Hi, can you please show the fitting of the bearing in the motorplate. Our 2 keep falling out. Quick cut at 0:45;) Same Problem on our 3 Ultras. Great video👍
Great video, thanks for the effort to smooth out the path for us. The holes of my transmission is slightly off when trying to fit onto the chassis, which makes the tranny very notchy, any thoughts on what went wrong on my part?
So I’m having an issues with my vfd twin. It’s been locked in 6% od since I built it. Now it’s acting like it’s not fully locked into 6% anymore. When the front tires get meet resistance trying to climb they stop running and trans just clicks and slips. So it has to be the front output. Pulled trans apart and everything seemed fine. No busted gears and slide dog looked fine too.
@@HarleyDesignsInc I pulled it apart last night everything looked fine. No busted gears, dog slides looked fine. Reassembled with the instructions and still has issues. It had all the pin for the gears were they were suppose to and had both e clips on the rear output shaft and had all the correct shims between the bearings. . I have roughly 10 hours on it before it started having the issue. When I get off I’m going to lock in into 33% and see if it’s still doing it. Either way I will pull it back apart and check it once again.
Built mine, one of 4 Vanquish trucks I own, it's up for sale. Are you going to offer the trans as a stand alone? That might be fun to play with someday on a monster truck or something, but I'll stick with my Super Shafty with a hurtz unit for crawling comps. Love all your vids, love most of your gear. I've got about 10 crawlers total, and I think all of em have some Vanquish or Incision somewhere. Thanks, and have fun.
I just broke a gear from my phoenix and I was looking and several people had the same problem, do you have any option for more resistant gears? besides the original ones?

Vanquish Technical Support: May I ask if you have watched the video that Josh from Harley Designs has done? Frustrated Customer: No, I have not. Is it really that good? Vanquish Technical Support: Oh yes, it’s is excellent. Please watch it and if you have any questions after that, please feel free to call back. So quick question as the interweb is full of conflicting information. The slop in the rear output shaft. Some say the slop is intentional for the DIG to function properly and some say to shim it out with the mysterious plastic shim from the kit. (The manual says nothing about either) And while shimming it with the plastic shim does remove all the slop, does it have a negative impact?
Josh, HUGE thanks for the video. Just curious, but, can the machined transmission gears (or, at least most of them) from the VFD be used in the VFD-Twin? If not, will a machined gear set specific to the VFD-Twin be coming soon?
In order to do RWD, your Tx needs to have at least one 3-way switch, or a dial that can be set to "act" like a 3-way switch. If course, in order to be able to set the dig shifter to allow FWD, you'll need the same. So...if you want the ability to use ALL options (4WD, FWD, RWD, dig, and selectable dual OD), you'll need a Tx with two 3-way switches, or two dials, or one of each (plus the requisite dials & 2-way buttons/switches for accessories, such as winch & lights). Here's how I see the channels: throttle, steering, Aux (if using Mamba X), OD, dig, winch, one channel to control on/off for ALL lights simultaneously. That's already 7 channels. Now, time to pack up my Phoenix kit for the night.
@@HarleyDesignsInc Perfect. Thank you for quick response. One more question while I have you. If you don't mind? Could one run the T-440? I ask because they're exactly the same price. Will the taller servos fit with the body on?
@@HarleyDesignsInc Well... I'm on the hook for 3 T-440's 😊. In fact I went full Tekin throughout. RX4, Roc412, and I went ahead and got the Bluetooth program box from them as well.. Extra parts are on the mold for various configurations. It’s pretty common for kits to have extra unused parts. Metal bearing plates help support the gears more and are a nice strength upgrade.
Yes Fusion Pro will fit, as will the new Fusion SE. The original Fusion does not fit. Here are the dimensions and which Hobbywing motor should work and which will not: Transmission motor clearance 40mm x 60mm FIT: Fusion Pro 2300kV 37mm x 58mm Axe 540L R2 36mm x 57.8mm Fusion SE 36mm x 58.1mm DON’T FIT: Fusion (1200kV or 1800kV 540-spec) 38mm x 64mm Axe550 R2 36mm x 63.8mm
I put the hobbywing fusion pro 2300 KV in my Phoenix but you have to sand down or file the nub on the passenger side for the link bar. It doesn't affect the strength of the upper link
The front drive in neutral does not turn easily. Feels like there is resistance. Is this normal? I have rebuilt several times and everything looks correct. Ideas?
The front output shaft would not turn when the drive shaft was attached and it would when not attached. The rear had a lot of play. After rebuilding again everything turns ok. The rear still has a lot of play and the front is very tight.
This is where I’m at as well. The front driveshaft seems to rub on the transmission casing when installed. There is a _lot_ of drag. I’m going to attempt rebuilding to see if that fixes it up, but am wondering what I could’ve missed. It feels like the front output shaft is too short. edit: I’ve broken down the transmission, confirmed everything is in the right spot. I noticed that the 5x11x4 bearing sits proud of the 30t front drive gear. I think this is causing the output shaft to be “short”, pulling the driveshaft into the case. Upon reassembling, I tightened the screws on the left (front-output) side of the case first, followed by the right. This helped a little, but I think the real problem is the too-wide bearing for the 30t gear.
@@tristan-s that’s interesting. Two of my gears have a recess which is only 2.5mm deep and a 3mm wide bearing to fit. This causes them to sit proud. I noticed the casing actually distorting very slightly when the bolts were done up. Hmm. Might need to deepen the recess in these gears
Some are finding a clicking sound coming from transmission (felt through the front drive shaft) during climbing? Some have shimmed the upper gear on the main shaft coming from the motor to reduce the click? Believing it may have some side to side play ..Any thoughts or ideas on this?
The upper gear really couldn't have anything to do with that if they are feeling it thru the front shaft since all gears past that gear would experience it. The front portion to the VFD Twin is the exact same as the previous VFD. It's more likely something in the front output overdrive gears and slide dogs if they are only seeing it in the front. It's not something I've had on any of mine. They should also check the driveshafts are phased.
