  • The career of Matine (by Silver Moon x Matador) was that of a shooting star rising high and then unfortunately crashing down like meteorite. Though she was well known in Denmark as a young dressage horse, she made her international break through and fame at a very rapid speed. Within one year she premiered at Grand Prix level and won individual silver and bronze at the 2006 World Equestrian Games.
And that is when her career virtually ended. The mare competed successfully at a few more World Cup qualifiers in the winter of 2006-2007 but she injured herself slipping off the trailer at the 2007 World Cup Finals in Las Vegas. As of then Matine continously struggled with injuries and never returned to the show ring.
In August 2009 Møller announced that Blue Hors had given up the fight to get her back to full health. They gave the mare a peaceful retirement as a broodmare in the field and had planned on inseminating her with Blue Hors Zack' semen this spring. Matine spent her last days being "a horse" with her buddy, the retired team horse Blue Hors Cavan.
Matine's silver medal winning kur to music is to date one of the most viewed equestrian videos on RUclips.
Matine was bred by Inger Katballe and became 13 years old
The world famous dancing grey mare, Blue Hors Matine, was humanely put down today after a tragic accident in the field. A passer-by had noticed there was something wrong with the grey mare in the field and notified a staff member at Blue Hors.
"There was no doubt about it that Matine had broken her left front leg at the knee," said the saddened Blue Hors manager Esben Møller. "The vet immediately diagnosed that there was no way possible to save her life."

The excessive tailwringing is a sign of great distress. Don't the dressage people know this? In western disciplines this would be a major loss of points.

The best freestyle ever? I think she was launched into the beginning of the public and normalised rollkur trend, sadly. Especially being ridden by Andreas. Non-stop tail swishing, insanely tight noseband (you can see sort of a bulge underneath it in some angles), stiff back, piaffe on the forehand/not collected and a lack of hindleg engagement especially in the extended trots. Textbook results of rollkur training. She seemed like such a sweet horse, and I'm sad that this is highlighted as the "ideal dressage horse" - something others truly look up to.

I prefer to ride in a way that my horse is happy. As an adult I wouldn't do dressage or show jumping. I would rather ride in a way that my horse has natural movement and complete enjoyment. I wouldn't do anything that could hurt them or put a strain on their hearts. (I don't own a horse but I rode other people's and I was taught to ride and full care of a horse)

At the time when this mare hit the scene we all thought she was impeccably fabulous, but as we have become more educated we can see that she was trained with hyperflexion pretty strongly. She was an incredibly compliant mare to suffer all that abuse in stride.

I sure don't feel comfortable with that non-stop tail flicking. Something is not right.

Knowing now what she probably had to endure with him makes it a lot less pleasant to watch. But there will always be something special about Matine, her attitude and the effort she put into everything. She really looked like she wanted to please Andreas the best she could. So sad we had so little time to enjoy her.

What they do to that horse to make it walk like that is so shameful!!

How is it possible, that a horse, that half the time with his wipping tail says, that it does not want to be treated this way, is not heared?

This is so sad to watch. How can people be so selfish? Poor horse.

  • @senka2578

‘Sensational stuff’ as the horse is literally churning butter with that tail throughout the entire performance.

Every day animals give their unconditional love to us, and unfortunately there are those who are cruel to them. They will give their heart until it bursts, but the apathy of those who profess to love them is blatant. The tragedy is that we have just a glimpse through a window to witness the beauty and grace of these wondrous souls. Their lives are shear he'll behind the beautiful mask of their tormentors. It matters not to them what we see as long as it meets their desires. Until we speak up for those who cannot they will continue to suffer in silence.

She was a beautiful Queen. I'm so very sorry to hear about the stress and pain she had to endure. Now I'm so sad and crying for her. RIP Matine. 😢

I was there. What was so impressive was the majority of us had never seen the pair. It was like who the hell are they. It was amazing to watch, the crowd was electric. We were so excited to witness these unknowns kick butt and get on the podium. Yes we did talk about the tail. But every horse has something and she was special. The crowd loved her. I will never forget it. RIP beautiful lady. ❤️

I've almost never seen a horse keep this good time to music, and then to transition from one speed to another, equally in time. Sublime. So very sorry she was gone too soon.

Dressage is a painful experience for living loving horse souls. I hate anything that cause them one ounce of pain. So glad this beautiful mare went on the PEACEFUL PASTURE!
