Very excited to be back in the top 5/10 list game! These videos always are special to me since they are the very first videos I started doing about a year and a half ago. It's been a while since I've done a top 5 (now top 10) list but since Arc-V is close to wrapping up, expect, a lot more from me! So here they are, the ten darkest moments in Yugioh history, in my opinion of course.. Please let me know your list down below!

One little fact that you forgot, Dylan. Not only Toby was eletrocuted, but Misty said that when they've found his body it was unrecognizable. Divine gave shock treatment for a kid, disposed the body and the body itself was destroyed. That's beyond fucked up.

marik's past
I have about 5 for me....
5. The first turbo duel between Yusei and Kalin - hell, one of the episodes in that first duel was cut from the dub.
4. Aki/Akiza's backstory - Aki is my favorite of the female protagonists and her backstory gets me every time.
3. Diva's possession - I didn't really live Diva as a character, but even he didn't deserve to be possessed by Zorc. I saw Darkside of Dimensions in Theaters, and that really messed with me.
2. Kaiba's Suicide attempt - need I say more?
1. Marik murders his dad - that's all I'll say.

The duel between Yugi and Joey where Marik uses Joey against Yugi and if one of them fails the other gets dragged down to a watery grave

The dub was barely even able to censor that one. All they could do was try and not to say the word "death" explicitly. They barely were even able to write off the whole Anzu being crushed by a container set up.
I'm kinda shocked the massacre of Kul Elna didn't make the list
That was definitely an Honorable mention. I figured since that was ancient times and things were a lot more "barbaric" back then, that it just missed out for that reason
LennydaMellon Agreed the Millenium World got quite dark at times.Plus the duels with Panik and Bakura in Duelist Kingdom imo.

I feel like Yuya's parental abandonment issues were pretty dark. Something that's traditionally played much lighter or with little/no impact in most of the series is shown to leave some significant psychological scars, from a commonplace trope in the series. It's not violent or graphic, but it's incredibly dark psychologically.
There's also Gozoboro Kaiba initially grooming Seto to be a vessel for the mind of his biological child who "sorta" died, which is all kinds of messed up. The creation of the Super Fusion card, turning Judai's friends against him with negative emotions, and psychologically torturing them, before forcing him to accidentally sacrifice them. Yubel was pretty sadomasochistic as well, though not as overtly horrifying as Sergey. Ryou Bakura's mental state when it comes to the ring, knowing it's evil but not being able to resist its will. Seto's suicide threat. Marik torturing Mai by eliminating her memories of loved ones. And especially when Haga/Weevil ripped up the insect card (Gokibore I think?) in front of Yami, pretending it was Yugi's soul card, destroyed forever, and then the darkness of the ensuing Berserker beat down Yami retaliated with.
Yu-gi-oh is fucking dark.
Honorable mention: the Kul Elna massacre a.k.a. how the Millennium Items were created.
Episodes 60-62 of Yu-Gi-Oh! aired in Japan on June 19th, 2002, June 26th, 2002, and July 3rd, 2002. They aired in the U.S. on February 8th, 2003.
The film SAW came out Oct 29th, 2004 with a short film that was pitched to Lions Gate Entertainment in 2003. I would say that the movies took from Yu-Gi-Oh!, not the other way around.
YuGiOh definitely came first, especially when you consider the manga's release date.
The idea of O’Brian’s duel is even more horrific when you look at his eyes, the dude went from stage 1 to stage death of PTSD. Emotionly numb by the end of it.

Yusei being electrically tortured is pretty dark for me.
Most of my favorite dark moments are from 5DS:

-Jack vs Carly

Bruno's death was so needless too as I grew attached to having him around as one of the guys and it still bothers me that he couldn't see the end of the whole ordeal with the others.
The studio behind 5DS were definitely high on some strong stuff if they thought "Hmm, you know what we need for this new Yu-Gi-Oh spinoff, hanging people and torturing actual children with electricity on screen, that'll boost ratings :D!" was ok
Well 5d's went really dark a lot of times. Police brutality, torture (more than once and almost always through electricity) all of the main antagonists of the first season dying horrifically, the slow genocide of humanity, child endangerment (multiple times), slavery, shooting someone through the head, mutilation and more.
And nuclear meltdowns.
To be fair at that point yugioh wasnt really being played as much by children 😊
One of the darkest moments for me was Dark Marik vs. Yugi. I mean, first of all, we all know how twisted Dark Marik was. But I thought his final shadow game was pretty jacked up. Torturing Yugi throughout the entire duel was incredibly morbid.
I would also consider Kaiba's suicide attempt in the duel against Yami Yugi in one of the first episodes of Duelist Kingdom.
Then you would have to include Dennis' suicide from Arc V as he actually DOES commit suicide and he does it in a cruise ship where a lot of people can see him and you know not a silent place where only a couple can see you.
Awesome, just awesome. My only issue is that there should of been an honorable mention list for stuff like the doctors brain parasites, kaibas suicide attempt, Noah's accident that destroyed his body, the mecklord genicide, just hart in general, and maybe mai in that hour glass thing. Wow these shows are dark
Dylan u forgot to add this really f*cked up scene to the top 5, maybe top 2 actually. Might even be #1, dub watchers prepare urself: Marik's dad heats up the blade of a knife, starts cutting marik with it. Then Marik's dark side is born, and he gets marik's dad pinned against a wall, stabs him to death with the millenium rod then marik's dad's corpse is shown with quite a lot of blood behind it. Then marik who is back to his senses sees his dad's corpse screams in horror.
That literally just missed my list.. I was gonna give an honorable mentions shout out at the end and that would have been the first one on it. Definitely a messed up moment
Oh and Rudger shown with most of his arm cut off and the remainder of his sleeve is all bloody ( ep 57 of 5d's )

BulletPlayz Personally, I am grateful that the series was dubbed. Granted thats only because Im able to watch it in english, regardless how watered down it is(hate reading the sub of any anime) But calling the Japanese people diseased due to their creativity is pretty ignorant to say the least.

How the Marik vs. Joey duel ended and how Joey was on the verge of death.

Yuri carding Yusho and showing Yuya the card with a messed up look on his face

Marik killing his dad is the most dark shit ever

I remember watching Tobi's death in sub. my reaction was "wha...HOLY SHIT!" as soon as the blood curdling scream stops and the flat lining begins.
Man 5Ds is fucking brutal but I still think it's the best Yu-Gi-Oh show we've got. It has mature themes, awesome action, interesting and gripping lore, characters that are fully fleshed out and an incredible storyline. This isn't to say that the other shows aren't awesome as well, it's just that 5Ds kinda knocks it out of the water for me.
That dark signers arc was amazing, right next to Battle City as the best arc in Yugioh history for me!

When that episode first came out 9 years ago, I laughed at that moment. Then, after several years of watching the Abridged series, I went and saw Dark Side of Dimensions when it came out in theaters - and was very pleasantly surprised at the quality. Since then, I've read the original manga and am currently working on getting through 5Ds and Zexal - and all I can say is that, rather than stupid, 5Ds is stupidly awesome.

When it comes to Yusei, everybody always says that he is way too perfect and that he is a Mary Sue. Personally I think it's fine that he is proficient in many things, in fact a character that stays true to his morals and defends his views is very inspiring. Yusei is a very heroic character that succumbs to darkness and that is something that everybody should aspire to be.
Well to be fair, 5Ds had it's weak parts in the form of the middle arc which was boring and seemed to go on forever. I will say that I really enjoyed the last arc and the ending. The ending is really great, probably my favourite ending. It just leaves you with this feeling that you've experienced an incredible journey and in the end everybody goes their seperate ways.
I was kind of expecting Yusei's experience in security's custody to be on here....it was intense, what with the experimentation, the marker getting branded into his face, the electrocution and the police brutality.

Professor Viper/Cobra's fell to death had left a deep memory in me, and the fact that his son's gruesome death makes things worse, and his action justified

Yuma Tsukumo Yea. Yubel caused him to hallucinate to the point that he prevented his son's death in his hallucination but in reality he just walked off and fell to his death. Pretty screwy.
One of the darkest scenes for me was in arc v when sora first faced shun and he reveals the truth about their pasts. It's a duel which is just twisted.
5ds is the darkest of all the Yugioh series so far. It makes me appreciate that I got into the subbed version of Yugioh instead of living off the dub.

And I will be doing top 10 anntagonists in Yugioh, and when Arc-V ends, that entire week (5 days) I'll be doing antagonists on Monday, and then top 10 lists related to Arc-V on Tues-Fri.
Saddest moments is also in the works!
The darkest moment for me was the reveal of the future in 5Ds, and the fact that the villains aren't exactly wrong. Plus Aporia's backstory with the 3 times his life changed.
I know this video is old, but the Arkana episode of Yu-Gi-Oh! aired 3 years before the Saw movie was released.
I remember one moment from arc v. It was during Zarc's backstory when he became violent duelist and started hurting other duelists and there was scene where a duelist was so badly injured that he spat out blood.Even if he was shadowed it was pretty damn disturbing at least for me and the entire fact how he fused with his monsters, became one mega monster and demolished entire original dimension is messed up too.I bet there were a lot of injured and killed people.
What about when Yusei's bike broke ,got stabbed in the freaking stomach and showed us litteral blood in a Yugioh show!
Here is my list in no particular order just what comes to mind.
* Machine Emperor Genocide, which is Zero Reverse on a global scale pretty much, and the whole reason why the antagonists of Yugioh 5ds do what they did. (Justified Evil)
* Fall of Atlantis - all the citizens are corrupted into demons including Dartz'a wife who he then kills.
* Carding/Heartland Invasion of Arc V - until it was revealed there is a way to reverse the process, we and the characters believed that any one carded was dead for good. and of course the practically genocide of Heartland is messed up in itself.
* Im gonna cheat here and have 2 manga onlys- Marik's dark half kills his dad (check it out for yourself), and Trapping Mai in Penalty Game in anime it was hourglass of sand which would drown her and her memories, in manga it was parasitic insects devouring her and her memories (she was saved both times) In anime that event haunts her and leads her right into Dartz's hand.
*Professor Cobra's fall, he wasnt the best of villains of Gx but the way Yubel made him commit suicide by pretending to be his son who he wanted to revive and he follows the spectre off the platform to his death is pretty dark way of saying "You failed me" both from the son and Yubel.
*Massacre of Kul Elna - Priest Akhenadden brainwashes his soldiers and orders them to kill the entire village of thieves and murderers to create the 7 Millennium Items, leaving only 2 things: a vengeful Bakura and a way for the Dark One to return.
* Death of Kaito - He beat his rival, he won the Numeron Dragon aka the key to the Numeron code, and he died on the moon due to failure of spacesuit, pretty dark for a hero's death.
That's all i can think of right now still great list ya had!

One dark element I remember is the entire premisse of the future in 5D's. Seeing Aporia's backstory full of dispair, full of death. Zone's history of actually bringing back hope to the people, only to end up losing it himself and end up being the actually last human on the planet.
Damn, this one gave me chills. You counting up to these messed up moments was not something I expected, you did an excellent job with this one. I have to admit I've forgotten how dark Yu-Gi-Oh can be for a children's anime. That was your best video so far, Keep up your awesome work! Also, I'm glad you decided to start making Top Ten's instead of Top Five's which can be really limiting at times. On another note, I don't mind "dark" plot elements in general, but the things you dug up there seriously cross the line. If the show wants to kill a character, either do it clean or if not, keep it in line with the current atmosphere. Carly's murder comes to mind, it wasn't overly gory but left a great impact.
One of the darkest moments that I think you missed out on is Zarc destroying the city and attempts to kill various people. Zone, Aporia, Antonomy, and Paradox's future where everyone is dead, the Mecklord Emperors have destroyed the world, and they are the only survivors. Soo many dark parts of Yugioh. Love your videos, keep up the awesome job!

According to the Yu-Gi-Oh! 10th Anniversary Animation Book, Sayer was revived after "Ccarayhua" was defeated and was quickly arrested by Sector Security after the fall of the Dark Signers and the King of the Netherworld and was sent to The Facility.

the kamishiro twins lives both past and present in zexal are what i think are the most disturbing and horrific thing in ygo like, in their past life their parents die and nasch/shark becomes king at what 15? then merag/rio basically commits suicide in front of her brother when vector attacks their kingdom. and as nasch leads his army he finds this little girl who looks exactly like merag and befriends her. skip ahead to after the vector nasch duel and we see that all of nasch's army is dead and gone along with the little merag lookalike. nasch even cradles her dead body in his arms?? and shes a literal child like five years old???? then in their present life when they themselves were like five they were involved in a terrible car crash that killed both their parents??? and then rio got burned alive and was in a coma??????? of course then there's shark's identity crisis when he learns about his past life and that he's actually a barian / a part of the evil gang his friends are trying to defeat like.... that all happened to two people
of course all the barians past lives i think are very very messed up and my heart hurts whenever i think about it cause they all died in horrible ways when they were just teens

Read Volume 12 of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga because Pandora/Arkana is actually CUT by the saw blade in a few panels.
So, I know that Yu-Gi-Oh! the manga is much darker than what the TV shows portray...

Dylan, this is definitely one of my favourite Top 5/10 videos that you created! I think you should've done an honourable mentions segment for this video because there were definitely quite a few others dark moments that occurred:
- Mai getting tortured by Marik during the duel and slowly dying after the duel (DM)
- an implied genocide on the XYZ Dimension (Arc-V)
- Pegasus' getting the Millennium Eye from Shaddi and getting it ripped out from Yami Bakura (DM)
- Antinomy/Vizor/Bruno's Death (5Ds)
- the back stories of the DOMA people (DM)
- Amon Garam/Adrian Gecko sacrificing his friend Echo to achieve the power of Exodia (GX)
- Vetrix/Tron's accident (ZEXAL)
- a Cult (Society of Light) coming to Duel Academy and slowly bringing in students to join (GX) [at least that's what I think]
Also, knowing ZEXAL, ARC-V, and VRAINS seem to be following the patter of DM, GX, and 5Ds respectively, do you think VRAINS will have some dark elements like 5ds did? (although I don't think VRAINS will reach the level of darkness 5Ds did, I could see being trapped in the Data Wind, where I'm assuming the Virtual Reality Duels will take place, and then die in real life when you lose a duel being a possible story for a season)
Honestly, my darkest moment in the entire franchise is the mass assimilation in Zexal. Not only do thousands of brainwashed people instantly disintegrate and get their souls sent to Barian World(Flip/Hyori included), but almost the *entire* Zexal crew eventually suffers the same fate. The only scenario that ties with this is Kite's lunar death scene.
I thought there was something off about the Yugi vs Arcana duel. "Dark Disk" my ass! XD
Remember that episode in season 2 with the duel at the docks? Where Yugi's friends are mind controlled? I remember that being pretty dark even in the dub.
That one history professor in gx, finally getting his favorite card back falls forward without anymore words into the darkness

Actually the darkest moment to me was what happened to Otogi’s dad in the manga, I won’t say what exactly happened but it’s extremely messed up and made me almost stop reading the Yugioh manga for a moment.
I agree it's a pretty dark moment but I wouldn't say rapid ageing is as scary as alot of other things in Yu-Gi-Oh! such as what is listed in the video and rapid ageing is a very common theme in fiction these days but still messed up none the less.
I really enjoyed your top 10 list, thank you for doing it! For the most part I really agree with your choices, I just think rather than Atem versus Arcaina, I would choose the scene where Bakura takes Pegasus is eye
Nice job, I think you're really spot on with this list! Have you considered doing a list for the most memorable times the series PROTAGS went completely dark? That might be something interesting to do because I know a lot of fans still talk about them and it would match up nicely with this list.
Come on, OG yugioh had many more dark moments. Hell, the sole origin of the card game is darker than everything you listed.
Dylan hate to break it to you but that's not lynching, that's hanging...Lynching involves burning a body, as in tied up against a stake (was not uncommon for it to be a cross). But yeah the spider string acted as a noose so that's not lynching
According to the official definition provided by google, lynching means "kill (someone), especially by hanging, for an alleged offense with or without a legal trial." Yugioh Everything not going to get into an argument over this but what you should do is hanging, because (this is something I had learned about growing up) lynching is linked to racial violence in the south in the early 19th century and while that may be the definition given by the dictionary, its definition in history involves someone being burned at a stake. Again I am not trying to spur some sort of argument, but I'm just trying to explain to you my side and why I say what I said.

Interesting video! I appreciate the amount of research done! However, I would still consider the slaughter in Kul Elna, during the "Memory World" or the "Dawn of the Duel" arc to be pretty brutal too, as seeing such a horrific event is what made Theif Bakura what he is.
Yeah Kul Elna almost made this! The reason it didnt it cause it was back in ancient egypt and those times (irl too) where alot more cutthroat and brutal then modern society. Glad you enjoyed! : D

So there's this scene in Yugioh ARC V where in the Zarc flashbacks there's this scene of Zarc beating someone and then they start to cough up blood and you see Zarc laughing and the crowd cheering

Strings/Doll (the pantomime controled by Marik) has a pretty messed up backstory, he killed his parents and became a mime to seal away his consciousness. This was left out in the dub

For the yugi vs pandora/arcana duel , in the dub not only were the saws changed to lazer saws but arcana still says "whoever looses will be sent to the shadow realm" . Don't know how getting your legs cut of and diying in half a minute out of blood loss does that.

10. Academia from Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V. Once you 14 you're sent what appears to be a school that teaches you how to duel but in reality is essentially a school training kids how to be bloodthirsty dueling soldiers and these soldiers apparently relished in hunting down people of an innocent city that was *COMPLETLEY* caught off guard by their invasion and carding them committing *GENOCIDE* basically. Not to mention little kids *WANT* to go to Duel Academy *(Although in all fairness they more than likely don't know what goes on behind close doors)* but apparently their parents do and they'll *FORCE* their kids or other kids who don't want to go to Duel Academy to go there anyway....
9. Arkana from Duel Monsters - Forces Yugi into a duel were the losing will *HAVE HIS LEGS CUT CLEAN OFF* and in the Japanese Dub he outright says he's going to do Yugi in so Marik will help him get his lost lover back and after losing Yugi saves him and Arkana has clearly gone insane *(Completely insane I should say, he was already unhinged when you meet him)*.

- Grieger gets hunged and we see his body....

1. Toby's Demise - Kid seemed to be the most normal person we've seen be a part of the Arcadia Movement. He seemed nice, had an older sister who clearly loved him and to him be experimented on like that and when he clearly couldn't handle what they were putting him through Sayer just said *"Nope, we can't use him, go ahead and do him in"* and than we hear his screams intensify, see his heart rate flatline, his eyes burst *WIDE OPEN* and then we see Misty mourning over his corpse.....wooooooow. Makes you glad to see Misty order her Earthbound Immortal to *LITERALLY EAT* him alive.
Feel like raiding other dimensions in arc V should be here especially in new domino city it's the yugioh no Russian it may if been reverted but that single action puts Leo in the top 2 with Saywer c(who did lots of other shit like killing Carly) of hated characters and even the entire fusion dimension comes 3rd

I'm sure this has been covered, but Edo’s father's murder. Edo was roughly 5 to 7, in my opinion, when he found his father's corpse. While the murder of his father is dark, I feel it gets darker because Edo gets adopted and raised by said murderer, without knowing. So...would that count as kidnapping?
