Introduction to Islamic Art

There are 3 major components to Islamic Art: Arabic calligraphy, geometric patterns, and biomorphic floral patterns. Geometric art is an artform that relies on the importance of unity and order. All patterns begin with a circle from which simple polygons such squares, hexagons, and octagons are generated. They are then further dissected into more complicated patterns that have many folds of complex symmetry. Biomorphic patterns are abstracted floral patterns which have three key elements- the spiral, symmetry and structure and lastly rhythm and balance.
