#42 Islamic Geometric Patterns on an Isometric Grid

  • Опубликовано: 17 янв 2020
  • I want to give you a taste of how you can draw a good deal of sixfold Islamic geometric patterns on an Isometric grid, a tiling of equilateral triangles. This grid can be drawn using a compass and ruler on different scales. If you don’t wish to draw it, you can easily print, buy or borrow this paper also known as “triangular dotted paper” found in many a maths department’s store cupboard!
Here are the five I show you in the video with links to David Wade’s photo archive:
    Pattern number 1:
    TRA 0503 on patterninislam...
    TRA 0507 on patterninislam...
    MOR 0814 on patterninislam...
    Pattern number 2:
    EGY1625 on patterninislam...
    Pattern number 3:
    TUR 0312 on patterninislam...
    TRA 0303 on patterninislam...
    EGY 0334x on patterninislam...
    Also see Tutorial #23 • #23 A Zellige Border f...
    Pattern number 4:
    IND0416 on patterninislam...
    Also see Tutorial #6 • #6 Itimud Ud Daula - M...
    Pattern number 5:
    IND0511 on patterninislam...
    IND0919 on patterninislam...
If you want to know how many more can be drawn visit, Brian Wichmann’s website, www.tilingsearch.org. It enables you to do a general search, I picked the final option under “All angles of the pattern a multiple of:” 60 degrees, pressed “Submit” and received images of 202 patterns, all ones that can be drawn on Isometric paper - amazing!

This is beyond fascinating!!! As a child, I never imagined such beautiful patterns could be drawn in such a simple manner, just by using a ruler and a compass. Thank you for this tutorial ♥

Thank you very much, Samira. You are a terrific, clear teacher and with my love of art and geometry you inspire me to try new things :) Art + logic = beauty. As well as painting these as you do so beautifully these designs would also work very well for patchwork and quilting.

These are called tree foil weaving. Hexagonal weaving is one of the most complex strategies in parametric façade design. Arabs already mastered this craft. Our contribution could start with the projections over columns and curved surfaces. Cathedrals in England have few of these.
    Excellent work as usual. :3

      @samiramian  Год назад

Thank you! Again I'm not sure what your terms are as I know trefoil weavinga nd patterns to be something else. Also Arabs were only some of the peoples who excelled and moved this art form forward... many cultures spanning europe, africa and asia were involved.
