  • Here is my first character analysis for three hopes. I honestly really enjoyed the game and seeing all of the characters in a new light, but if I had to choose my favorite version of Dimitri I would still be partial to three hoses. Hopefully you al enjoy the video and please feel free to let me know what you think.

AG Dimitri is, IMO, meant for fans who never wanted Byleth to be so pivotal in his "redemption arc." AG implements Dedue, Felix and Rodrigue much better into this arc. Plus, it's combined with all of the Blue Lions contributing and aiding Dimitri along that path of understanding: that he's not alone, he can rely on others too. It's handled very well and Dimitri is allowed to grow in a different way than he did in AM
I loved AM, it's my favorite 3H route. But simultaneously, I cannot deny that removing Byleth from the narrative made for a better "closer knit" Blue Lions bunch, and they were already very close and well written in AM too.
But now? They're less contentious with each other. Dedue is never shafted or ignored: he's there for Dimitri and he's part of the Duscur restoration. Felix is less rude and less confrontational now as Duke; he also gets the opportunity to apologize to Rodrigue. Sylvain is taking things more seriously knowing that he'll eventually become the Margrave; he also shows that peace with Sreng is his priority. Ingrid still wants to achieve her dream of knighthood, but she also contends with the responsibility of leading house Galatea. Annette has a better relationship with her father, and Gustave returned to his family many years sooner than in 3H. Ashe deals with his responsibility as a royal knight along with his responsibility as the heir of Lonato, knowing that he opposed Lonato. And Mercedes ties back into the idea that Dimitri shouldn't regret helping the church because she directly shows Dimitri everything he's accomplished with the church's help in Faerghus.
AM was about Dimitri's personal "fall" and redemption. It was about mental health struggles and the journey of self acceptance. AG is about how your support system network can be there for you even when you feel overwhelmed, and that the people in your support group can grow and learn as you do too. They're both great routes with great themes and messages.

Azure moon is my favorite route from three houses too! But I definitely agree that azure gleam was kind of a response to dimitri's friends not being present in azure moon. Also your takes on the other blue lions are right on the mark imo. They really are great stories even if I have a preference for Azure moon.

      Heya again! xD
I think I'm in a weird spot as a Blue Lions fan. Mainly because AG is almost everything that I've ever wanted from AM ... But it also lacks the Dimitri vs Edelgard rivalry (dagger story too) that made AM stand out so much. It also lacks the fallen hero rises to an atonement/redemption arc that made Dimitri such a beloved hero to fans. AM has many great support conversations that AG expanded upon too, but we also miss out on things in AG simply because it's a Warriors spin off.
Meanwhile, AM stuffed in a self insert avatar (Byleth) to replace the importance of Dedue and Felix to Dimitri. It kills off Rodrigue (with no cutscene either) and sadly, Rodrigue and Felix never get closure. Dimitri kills Cornelia and Arundel but never fully learned that the Agarthans set up the tragedy of Duscur. Duscur itself got little closer on screen and is mainly relegated to epilogue stuff, which is bad for Dedue, Felix and Ingrid too. And we're left with unanswered questions.
AM and AG feel like 2 halves of a single whole, and I kinda view them that way tbh. It's an either or situation but I prefer aspects of both. And I love what AG added even tho I don't wanna lose what I loved in AM.

@@l.n.3372 Aw man the dagger interaction between Dimitri and Edelgard was great stuff. But yeah both stories definitely fulfill dimitri in very different ways, which is why I think three hopes is a great spinoff. It doesn't invalidate the story of Three Houses Dimitri, but instead builds on his character and the context around him giving us a unique perspective on him that stays true to his character.
I'll also say that the duscur paralogue was great for the blue lions characters and really fit well with the houses themes.

Tying into what you said, Ingrid and Dedue were both so good in this game! First we have the paralogue with Dedue, Ingrid and Felix. Then, Ingrid's B support with Dimitri, where she admits she's ashamed of her past behavior towards Duscur, and Dimitri offers her the chance to learn more about their culture. He takes her to a Duscur restaurant to understand Duscur better. Then in Ingrid's A support with Dedue, she not only apologizes to him but invited him to that same Duscur restaurant that Dimitri told her about! It's such good writing! I'm amazed at how good AG was at times, it blew me away.

Writing like this is what made me truly love many characters in Three Houses and Hopes like Dimitri, Sylvain, Felix, Lysithea, Mercedes, and Marianne who all have layers to them and have supports that are both silly and serious. This writing is something that I feel is lacking in Engage and ultimately, why I hope this character writing makes a return in the next game.

I'm gonna be frank, I didn't think much of Three Hopes because it sounded more like Golden route fanfic. However, your essay and review of Dimitri's character has changed my mind about it --- and notice how amazing he is. He have still his flaws, his virtues and ideals but different route of development. So thank you for this. Blue Lions FTW!

I don't know if you played but there is no golden route. In each route at least one of the 3 contries get's fuked up. In one route there is a bad ending if you do not recruit Byleth where the war goes forever.
The only bad thing is the game feel a bit too short in each route, could have been a post game after finisshing the 3 routes where it give a few new chapters on each to do more things.

@@RubyAPBT I totally agree the game abruptly stops for both of the two routes I've played so far and its somewhat unsatisfying. If I had to guess they probably have a dlc planned that will be a continuation of the story or something.

@@ordinaryunits4341 I hope they have a huge DLC and let us play with many other character too.
I'm sad we can't use Judith the dads who we finally see the face or even some character who were playedble in 3 houses.
I mean we get shamir but not cassandra? Or Manuela and Not Hanneman -_-
If the DlC do not give more chapters on each route I hope at least is a Byleth route with the church and we get the other 2 saints as recruits I would love play with the beasts or even they human form. Will be fun recruit ex students to monastery again xD
And I love fight against Shez too and recruit it.
Would be nice too if it focus less on country fights and more on argathans explore them a bit more and their hideouts, smash shambala again xD
It could be the rout where you get the most characters unlocked too I hate how many are unlocked on each route and you need meet them again and recruit to use...
Be it golden rout or not, they can make like 3 houses where the house leader do not come or can get just 1 aside from Edelgard who hates the church.(Hubets and Monica who are her simps, cuz I doubt they would leave her.).
Better than this would be 2 routes on like I mentoned about Byleth and other could be a if Shez was found by argathans first and sided with them. be like and Among Us route where we are the impostors and kill them all xD Would be nice be argathans and see their side even if they are only evil I don't care.
I would not care if it take a long time to make a huge DLC like this but I would wait.

"Self-appreciation that he is never really able to fully reach." I Love that! is such a contentious topic among his fans, yet I much prefer this approach regarding his mental health, as dissatisfactory as it is.
In hopes, the focus seems to be more on Dimitri's efforts to improve/learn how to, and the importance of having a solid support system around you, AKA friends!
It feels like a more insightful way to address the topic. Idk, I wasn't a huge fan of Byleth's pivotal role in his recovery...
Overall, I was pretty pleased with his characterization in 3 hopes. AG does a great job at exploring Dimitri as a tragic protagonist and Dimitri as a leader/political figure. We missed much of the latter in AM, and it turns out that Dimitri is more akin to a filthy medieval centrist (affectionate).
Dimitri is my bias, so it's nice to see someone else having a similar read on his character, someone more objective, that is.
Anyway, Great job on the analysis! I can't wait to see the others.

I always pondered on the idea of his perspective on slow change was due to the tragedy of Duscur. Much like Edelgard and Claude, Lambert attempted quick, sweeping reforms…that backfired horrifically.
That and Faerghus always struck me as a ‘slow-to-change’ culture due to the harsher environment they must survive in; both the cold and the constant invasions.

3 Hopes Dimitri is what 3 houses would be if he never lost his young idealism.
In 3 houses he start to lose it bit a bit by all bad thing happen during the year Edelgar betrayal hit heavy on him, maybe if Byleth "died" and when he goes back home he face is betrayed again be it by his uncle or cornelia and to save him Dedue die or "die".
He need to run fake his death, his friends think he died and were unable to be by his side.
However I think he didn't lost his fixation on the dead, I think it is the contrary, he went so many years alone with only the dead in his head that he lost the conection with the living. While Edelgard become his fixation it is based on a misunderstand on his part that she was involved in duskur tragedy fake Arundel is however he thing he was too. Unlike 3 Hopes the don't know a thing about argathans and the only dots he can connect is Arundel and Edelgard.
After 5 yeas even when his friends come back he is so immersed on the dead that he do not even interact with others, while every one try to help him he only remmember the living when they die. It's Rodrigue death that make him start to looking back to the living again, with Byleth and everyone help he start to care more for the living than the dead's revange.
Another thing is, I guess Dimitri was also tired of the dead too. May it be my interpretation, but when he first see Byleth after 5 year he is not just phisicaly tired but mentaly too, the first thing he say is Byleth "You... What must I do to be rid of you"
It think he is too tired of his hallucinations demanding revenge too. He killed some many and yet they were still there demanding revange may it be why he is focussed on Edelgard so much too, he thinks killing her will shut it up.
The most sad thing I think is not even one of "doctors" character tried to point it as some illness and treat him instead of ghost haunting him, in the end he had to learn to ignore this side of him to move on.

    • @ordinaryunits4341
      @ordinaryunits4341  2 года назад +3

I totally agree, Dimitri within three houses feels more subject to the dead in three houses because of his isolation and of his feeling that there is no other justice in the world than "killing those who deserve to die". If you've never seen them I suggest checking out my videos on the philosophy of dimitri and my original character analysis for his three houses rendition. Not to shamelessly plug, but I think you hit on a lot of the most central points of his character that I found too and you might be interested in checking them out.
I also wish that the game engaged more directly with his mental illness in supports because its really interesting to look into. That's why I was glad to see his felix A support in three hopes.

I just finished the kingdom path in 3 Hopes & wow I loved your video, it's spot on!
I think the kingdom's story in Hopes is honestly as good as AM (which was the best in Houses imo). I love the focus on the childhood friends group in Hopes, as much as I love AM it only focused on Dimitri alone, but in AG the focus is brilliantly on all characters especially the childhood friends, I disliked Byleth integration in Houses & while I was playing thought of how stupid it is to make Byleth the one who talks Dimitri out of his way instead of his friend group who are with him from the start, for example if he openned up to Felix in AM like he did in Hopes he'd get him to understand him better & talk to him.
Dedue is shafted in AM which is crazy considering his importance to Dimitri & the tragedy but here he's greatly involved.
Even Ingrid & Sylvain were great in Hopes, Yuri also considering he is from the kingdom.
Also the recruitments in Hopes >>>>>>>> than Houses by far, it is integerated well in the story & make so much sense, I understand Houses has permadeath so that affected the recruitment system but no way will someone join the invading empire & kill thier own ppl, friends, family bc their teacher is hot or bc they had a fight with their best friend king lol

Now on determining who byleth might align with, its pretty hard to say because of how they don't express their desires very much.
