Which biblical laws apply to Christians?

  • UPDATED VERSION HERE: • The Law & the Story of... -
What is the modern Christian’s relationship to the Old Testament law in the Bible? Which laws are we supposed to obey? Do the Ten Commandments still apply? Here's an overview of the story of God's people and their relationship to biblical law through history. It'll answer a lot of the questions you have (and maybe even some you didn't)!
Knowing the overarching story of God’s people and their relationship to the law helps us get our bearings as we dive into different passages during our Bible reading or Bible Study groups. It also helps us to identify questionable teachings, such as those coming out of the Hebrew Roots Movement (aka Torahism or return to Torah). And it sheds some light on the divergence between Judaism and Christianity in the early centuries.
If you’re a believer in God today, this is your story. This is our shared history! The faith journey that believers are living today is the continuation of this same story.

So glad I found your channel as I deal with 2 Hebrew roots guys at work (on a 4 man masonry crew). I've tried to reason with scripture but they usually resort to saying the scriptures are tainted and have been changed. Thanks, Jesse! As Augustine famously said, “If you believe what you like in the Gospel, and reject what you don't like, it is not the Gospel you believe, but yourself.” Those who take that position don't usually think about it this way, but they are putting themselves in a position of authority over the Scriptures. And, at that point, when it comes to theological disagreements between us, I have to choose Holy Scripture over my friend's opinions. Hope you find my videos helpful in your ongoing discussions! Blessings, Rob

Fortunately for you, they are right! (I am NOT) a member of the Hebrew Roots but a gentile believer in Yeshua HaMassiach. What we read and study nowadays is nothing but the crooked Greco-Roman catholic theology that for almost 2000 years the main stream church is been feeding us. Time to change diets! Please, read the Scriptures from the hebrew perspective, with the hebrew understanding and you will see the difference right away. Shalom 🕎

@@Pverb623 I used to work for a company where I worked alongside Orthodox Jews. One of them confessed to me that although there are over 600 Torah Laws, in reality, they only keep about half. I would think it's impossible to function in daily life while being mindful of 613 OT Laws at all times. If you break one, you break them all, according to Yahweh. And with no system for annual animal sacrifice to atone for sins, that's a no win situation. Book of Hebrews calls the Mosaic Law system the Ministry of Death & Condemnation. But the Good News is that Jesus Christ offers salvation TO SINNERS & SINNERS ONLY. Who REPENT & abide in Jesus Christ. Try reading Book of Hebrews & Galatians & Romans.

It's amazing to me that a man as learned as you appear to be, will be using Acts chapter 10 and saying that that vision negates us keeping Yah's dietary restrictions.
Peter interprets his own vision after he goes to the centurion's home. He literally says that God has made man clean and what God has made clean he should not call common or unclean. It's not about pork it's about people.

    • @TheBiblicalRoots
      @TheBiblicalRoots  2 года назад +13

Hello, Mr. Batman. Well, at least you find me amazing in one sense. :-)
I hear what you're saying, but we need to remember that Scripture inextricably links unclean people and unclean food: “You shall therefore separate the clean beast from the unclean, and the unclean bird from the clean. You shall not make yourselves detestable by beast or by bird or by anything with which the ground crawls, which I have set apart for you to hold unclean. You shall be holy to me, for I the Lord am holy and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine.” (Leviticus 20:25-26)
God decreed a set of foods unclean for Israel (Lev 11), but Gentiles weren’t held to those laws (See Deut 14:21). So under the Mosaic Covenant, what you ate revealed who you were. This is why in Acts 10 God used a vision of food to indicate a change in the status of people. When the voice said of the food, “What God has made clean, do not call common” (Acts 10:15), Peter understood it signaled a change in the status of people as well. The holiness laws his ancestors had lived under for a millennium and a half- which categorized certain food and certain people unclean-had changed.
If we take Peter’s vision solely as a metaphor for the Gentiles, we run into two significant problems. First, on what basis are we willingly allowing for a change in the Law of Moses on the issue of people, but not food? It's an arbitrary standard based on a pre-commitment to keeping the kosher food laws. Second, if the vision was solely given as a metaphor for the Gentiles, the command to “kill and eat” (v. 13) and the declaration “What God has made clean, do not call common” (v. 15) would be based on a falsehood. Yahweh would be teaching that formerly impure people are now clean by _falsely_ declaring formerly impure food clean. There is no precedent in scripture for God doing such a thing. Moreover, Yahweh does not teach false things or abide deceit. “It is impossible for God to lie” (Heb 6:18).
      Blessings,
      Rob

Maybe alot of Christian's are not versed on the doctrine of Double Imputation? By Martin Luther? Is this why so many are still relying on their own works of self righteousness? I wonder?

Thanks for pointing out that the relationship to the law for the people of Israel was covenantal. This is imperative to understand in respect to the promise of the new covenant, where sanctification is defined as an internal work, clearly because of God's sending of The Messiah, who is our righteousness and holiness. This is why Paul defines our relationship to the law as being entirely re-defined by the freedom found uniquely in Christ (Galatians 3:22). Keep up the good work!

I walked away from from these teaching over two years ago, but my has doubled down on Torah teaching. As you can imagine this has devided my home. My wife and daughters no longer attend church with me and I feel like a novice when discussing / arguing about this topic biblically, but know I have a responsibility to teach and correct regardless if it’s received or not. This is the usual Jesus nullified the law teaching. He came and fulfilled the law in order to nullify the law. Because God made a mistake with the first law so had to make another covenant that didn’t include all those annoying bits.
The problem with the first covenant was that the people were stiff necked and hard-hearted so the new covenant He is writing it on our hearts so we will want to keep his law!
It’s not a new law. Jewish people are not Israel. Israel are the twelve tribes of Jacob. Ten tribes were scattered amongst the nations not destroyed. Jesus came to restore the lost sheep (lost 10 tribes) that is who the gentile believers are. They are descendants of Jacob or they are adopted into Israel. They are certainly not Jews but likewise they are Gods people.
The feasts are not Jewish feasts they’re God’s feasts to be kept for all generations, not “until I made another covenant”. Again the covenant was made with Israel not just the Jews so we should keep His calendar rather than man’s calendar. The fourth commandment is keep the sabbath not Constantine’s sun worship day.
Peter’s vision was not about abandoning the dietary law! It was about not calling gentiles unclean. Peter didn’t start eating bacon 😂he went to the gentile household and gave them the gospel.
Paul went to the temple and paid for the sacrifices so the men could complete their Nazarene vows. He was accused of teaching against the law of Moses which he denied multiple times. Peter warns that Paul is difficult to understand and is easily misinterpreted by those who teach lawlessness. Paul didn’t teach against circumcision. He taught it is not for salvation and you should not do it until you understand the law which new gentile believers did not do. Gentiles are not to become Jews but they’re to learn to follow the Torah out of loving obedience just as messiah Yeshua (Jesus) did. That’s what he was teaching.
Hebrew roots people go too far and start keeping the oral law which Jesus riled against. He condemned the ritual hand washing and sabbath walking laws turning the ritual hand washing water into wine and commanding the lame man to pick up his bed and walk in breach of the oral tradition of man. Jesus taught to not add or subtract from the law of Moses. He commanded we do what the Pharisees teach isn the synagogue when seated on the seat of Moses (the Law) but not do as the Pharisees do (oral law)
Your wife is doing correctly teach your children Torah. Sunday worship, Easter and Christmas are pagan holy days.
Humble yourself, seek His face, pray and repent and He will hear you, He will be your God and you will be His son and He will heal your land (relationship with your family). I bless you and your family. May you experience the blessings of keeping His commandments as a family being set-apart from the world, in Yeshua’s name amen

I've believe and have studied both old and new testaments for decades. I tried attending a messianic assembly for a year. What I found strange bc all this was new to me, is that Jesus was rarely mentioned! BUT I KNEW MY BIBLE so this was a huge red flag. I studied there but found that they did not have anything that touched me. I left after Rabbi made it clear that he did not agree with Holy Spirit pored out to encourage the assembly. Bc I love scripture I began honoring shabbat. The first time, as I lit my candles, the kiss of Jesus fell upon my cheek. Of course, I was in love with Him and I felt a kiss. Upon my cheek. Sweet presence came into my room and had a more intimate fellowship than I can say. Bc I know the law of liberty in christ, I just enjoyed our appointment. The Hebrew language, Abraham man of faith thrilled me.

I'm 44, been in church all my life, saved as a young adult, listened to hundredssss of sermons, Bible studies, classes, podcasts, bought all the books, devotionals, study and parallel bibles, actually read some of em, including the Bible of course, but it took me watching the Prince of Egypt (yrs ago) and this 27 minute, animated slide show produced by an awesome theologian btw, articulated with brevity and simplicity for me to finally understand what I never could about all this. God bless you Bro. Solberg. I have adhd and sitting to read the Word of God has truly been a struggle, and feels like a daunting event, because I get bored, distracted, restless, etc. I was totally engaged here the entire time, finally able to fit the pieces together. I thank God for leading me to this video, and for you making it! I think I will just have to get myself a children's KJV bible.... I'm getting excited all over again! Thank You Lord Jesus for Your Holy Spirit! God bless whoever is still reading this really long message 😊! Much love!!

Hebrew Roots adherents seem to have a problem with Paul, so much so that they come close to rejecting him as an apostle and some fully do so. There is a problem there: Peter validated Paul’s ministry and instructed believers to observe Paul’s teaching. So to reject Paul is to reject Peter.

By your interpretation, there are four requirements for salvation
1.abstain from things offered to idols
    2.from blood
    3.from things strangled
    4.from sexual immorality.
    What about faith in Jesus?
How is a new believer to behave when they are converted?

She believes that Jesus is her savior but observes the Sabbath (wherever he moon may fall) and tells me it is wrong of me to celebrate Christmas (all holidays basically). She thinks she is following the narrow path and I'm on the wide road as I don't do all the commandments God gave us. In Revelations it says to all people who follow the laws of God will enter heaven . she also says Paul was missunderstood as his position . Since I don't follow all the laws (sabbath) i am violating Gods command as given to us in Revelation. She also says one of the desciples says he is afraid people are misunderstanding Paul. and last but not least she will follow Jesus instead of Paul. Help

That is an excellent approach, I wish you much wisdom and blessing in that journey. The truth is scattered all over the show, with much error in between. Ask for wisdom and don't doubt - Jas 1:5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and with no reproach, and it shall be given to him.
Jas 1:6 But let him ask in faith, doubting nothing. For he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed.

What there not telling you is Jesus through the law revealed the mysteries of the kingdom. The church seems to believe it’s a good thing to abrogate the law using grace to perpetuate sin itself. Definition of sin is 1 John 3:4 keeping the law is not to be saved but because you are saved. Jesus have his life for you to see this literally believe the church system and be without your call

@@cbonhomme1 You are exactly right for obvious reasons which could be explained by the law itself. But what if I told you by writing it / the commandments on your heart is the only way for the mysteries of the kingdom to be revealed. 1John 3:4 defines sin therefore we have to agree it’s correct knowing the word of god can not be rebuffed the verses has to make sense. Key is knowing what the law could or could not do what it’s function is and limitations. After reading Ezekiel chapters 40 to 48 and Zachariah chapter 14 we know the fest days and sacrificial system will be in full force and effect in the kingdom. Think more of them as a learning tool than a list of dos and don’ts and watch your blessings increase exponentially. Boils down to a choice believe the Catholic Church or the word of God subjective reasoning is only a man’s commentary. the question becomes, if the only two commands are to love God and people. how do we do that?
it seems like now that every other command is gone, we are left to our own interpretation of what love is.
    example:
it used to be Gods command that his people were not to worship him the way pagans did by making up their own feasts to him (golden calf)
but now can we love God and celebrate man made feasts to God. (chrismas)
It seems with only just two commands that we are leaving a lot out and a lot would be left up to people's own interpretation of what they believe love is.
And what exactly would be the definition of sin now?

If you understand your identity in Christ you are much less focused on sin and more-so focused on Christ living through you. If all a person focuses on is sin managment I think it is worth asking, have they died?

Before the entrance of sin into the world and before the distinction between Jew and Gentile existed, God set apart one particular day in seven, the sabbath. It is interesting that this act is recalled in the announcement of the fourth commandment in Exodus 20. Doesn’t this lead to the suggestion that all ten commandments have a validity for all humanity from creation onward and any notion of a change of that commandment is contrary to scripture?
