That's exactly how i've been learning guitar for 20 Years now. Really enjoyed playing mostly difficult pieces...but had a stagnation feeling those last 5 Years, learning caged systèm and" practising" really pimped my composition/improvisation skills....+, You remember better what you're learning when you get the theroy behind the piece : chords progressions become logical...! Whatever works when you're happy with it!
I started from 0 after 25 years of not touching the guitar and decided to learn Sultans of swing. I practice 3h every day and move along the song gradually and after a few months I learn all piece. Then I focused on dynamic and feeling another few months. Now I play it great and when someone see me playing it, he can't believe. In the meantime, I started to learn other songs they move and inspire me and realize that I am learning them with more ease and joy...so, he is wright!
I needed this video so much. Thank you, Guitar Pilgrim. You don't know how much you inspire and brings joy and inspiration to people with your channel.
I'm actually excited to "practice" when I get home from school cuz I get to get to play my favorite song by The Beatles. It is called Here Comes The Sun.
Guitar Pilgrim is a true master. Teaches you something really quite profound while making you laugh and tidying up after his little girl at the same time. Hat’s off!
This is the most valuable lesson on RUclips. Learn the songs that made you pick up the guitar. First song I learnt on guitar was Scar tissue by RHCP. When I warm up, I always play this first. It's still excites me to this day that I can play it and that was 8 years ago.
As a fellow over 40 player, I wholeheartedly agree with this recommendation. It's all I could ever really do too. Whenever I got pushy about a practice schedule for myself, I soon lost interest and stopped playing for long periods.
For years I was stuck on practice and this year I said “fuck it, I just wanna play Santana’s Samba Pa Ti”. I found a good video tutorial and promised myself I would play it with a month. It took me 3 months. But I did it. And by learning that song I compressed bending, blues passages, quick slides, short legato runs, a nice visualization of the scales across the fretboard, staccato, and (my personal nightmare) muting the strings to avoid string noise. My improvement was unbelievable, because I have fun! Now, I’m learning Led Zeppelin’s “The Song Remains The Same”.
So so true, even more so the olded I get. I have a few years left to work on exciting things not to practice. Thanks for putting out the greatest tip of life.
‘Burning Desire’ Jimi song, that he was never able to fully realize, though there are a few killer live versions, with which one can hear most of the ideas he was putting together for the song.
Hi Thom, you a real philosopher. It is always about self-motivation. And this is dependant on having fun by doing something. By the way, do you have a degree of a "classical" music conservatory?
Ive been stuck in a learning rut and this video brought to light the answer [ hopefully] there are a couple things that inspire me 1- picking up a guitar and playing one of your intros and learning it by ear [or from another u tube influencer] , 2- we babysit my 1 year old grandson 5 days a week there is nothing more inspiring that watching him grow and learn I know you can relate by the opening of this video and by the way he LOVES guitars
Thank you for the great advice. However, I suppose that at some moment you will have to stop playing something you like and "practice" a passage that is complicated. For example, a song requires certain patterns to play an arpeggio sequence. In the end, you will have to practice a few arpeggio exercises to master those finger movements. It has happened to me that to play something I had to practice certain things in order to "tell" my brain how to do it. I suppose everyone has a way to learn things. Great video and awesome piano playing!!!
So very true Mr Pilgrim, I think this is why learning songs is the best way to 'learn guitar' - you approach each song like its own self contained project and discover what you need to accomplish this - several years later and 20 songs later you can play! By the way, you are a superb piano player (but you knew that already).
Have you ever SEEN Steve Via LIVE?? It's not what I thought. He's more of a guitar "comedy genius". Very funny and ASTOUNDING! I suspect he practices Humor as much as guitar. Great entertainer, where as Joe Satriani comes out with both guns blazing-- blowin' you out of your seat.! Great fun..
Thanks ! Its just the kindof fresh thought I needed during these times, it transcends well into other parts of my life. You excite me to pickup the guitar and I've discovered so many old treasures. Thank you again !
You are a extra ordinary person and a extra ordinary musician, and a extra ordinary music teacher. Thank you for your life lesson..or rather very good advice.
There is such a life lesson here....every person learning 'anything' should get some inspriation from this. I took piano lessons as a kid...probably from 10 - 12 years old [1977 - 1979 to date my old ass]. My piano teacher lived across the street, and he'd come over with the John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano, and whatever other books? Teach me scales, songs from the book, and whatnot. I was so bored with the piano [My parents listened to heavy doses of The Beatles, Stones, Elton John, Billy Joel, etc..etc..] One day I heard 'Boogie Woogie' piano being played on a Tom & Jerry cartoon...and I was like 'WHOA! I want to learn THAT!?!?'....so I explained to my teacher verbally what I had heard, and he said "Oh like this, is this what you're talking about?" He proceeded to whip out some Johnnie Johnston riff on this upright piano of ours...he KILLED IT...and I was blown away! I said "YES!!! YES!!!...show me THAT!?". You know what he said to me "Nah, practice your scales, eventually you'll get to this." I was so deflated and discouraged, and didn't want to practice at that point...gave up piano, like an idiot. BUT picked up the guitar at 22 because I felt like I wasted my parents money on piano...and now I play guitar, in bands...and I'm teaching myself piano all over again thanks to RUclipsr gentleman like yourself. So, even at 54 years old I say to you sir: "Thanks for the encouragement and tips and lessons!" They are not falling on deaf ears. - RT
Cool take on attitude for playing vs. practicing. Thanks. If I ever go to Ireland I would visit the Rory Gallagher memorial statue. You should check it out, but it isn’t in his hometown.
I know what you mean ,being a father of a 8 year old and partner working nights ,so have to look for him almost 24/5 ,not complaining but I admit when his friends /neighbours come to play with him I’m relieved ,because that means I can play a bit ,great video
You are one talented dude, dude! Thanks for the Chopin, the practical philosophy, and all the great fretwork. But really...you didn't get that good at classical piano by just playing. Surely there was tedious scale work somewhere along the way, no? I taught myself blues harmonica by trying to play along with Paul Butterfield records, but I never got over the hump to be able 'just play' until I got the basics down by playing along with lesser players like Mayall, Brian Jones and Keith Relf. Then I could get how to follow the masters...
Same here, never "practice" I just play along to whatever I'm listening to at the time. Now I'm no where near as good a player as GP, but yes, I CAN play the guitar, and I've had a great deal of fun learning.
I love this video Pilgrim! Wu Wei is real and important. Sticking to a practice routine is what I want to do but not as fun as jamming over Little Wing. Maybe a compromise to reach my guitar goals? Onw of the best video from one of the best guitar channels around.
That was a beautiful piano piece you played at the end of the video. Can you tell us the name so maybe I can get the sheet music. Great video as usual. Oops, just noticed the Comment section you say it is a mazurka by Chopin. Thanks. ciao.
Good day sir! Can i have a request ? About slash and billy gibbons la grange. Please enlighten those guitarist who says slash is over rated. I love your channel sir. Rock n roll!
As lead guitarist in a Santana Tribute that try's to present Santana music as close as possible to the original recordings I spend time sorting out solo's note for note. After that I need to study and try not only to master the solo but also try and make it sound as close to Carlos as possible. I guess the entire process should be considered practice.....but for me it's more like a a challenge and a lot of fun and doesn't feel like practice at all.
I had taken up guitar at, lets say 15 years old when I bought a 72 Telecaster!. I was really excited and motivated then, and I had time and money to buy guitar stuff. I was starting to make alright progress. When I was 35 I was working 65 plus hours a week and I had a wife and four wonderful children. I'm a busy guy ! How much time do I have to pursue my guitar hobby now? I still don't have the time and I'm 64. I still love to play my guitars though. Thanks for the Lessons!
SMASH that like button if you enjoyed this video!! The thing at the end is a mazurka by chopin in case anyone's wondering
R u really over 40? ರ_ರ
Hey Thom, thanks for another awesome video.
Just one question: From which song is the riff you played at 2:59 min
Dank u wel en het beste
By the thumbnail it seems that “don’t bump your head” is the lesson. 😄
Was that Biff Tannon on the acoustic at the beginning?
Yes, Tom Wilson, love that guy!
Power of soul from the 'band of gypsies' album by Jimi Hendrix
He’s right. Playing the songs you love, maybe a simplified version to begin with, is the most fun way of ‘practicing’
😂. Loved the video! Right on brother. I will say playing a band situation there is some give and take.
GP is a fantastic coach, he does guitar too which is pretty cool
Alan Watts. Damn!
I want to play like you. 😁😎😂
Came for a guitar lesson, stayed for the life lesson.
And ended up playing the piano? :D
Hahahaha
Now I don't want to play guitar, I want to play STREET FIGHTER II ... 😁
You should start second channel: Piano Pilgrim
I started from 0 after 25 years of not touching the guitar and decided to learn Sultans of swing. I practice 3h every day and move along the song gradually and after a few months I learn all piece. Agreed!
I'm actually excited to "practice" when I get home from school cuz I get to get to play my favorite song by The Beatles. It is called Here Comes The Sun.
You are one of rhe most underrated youtube guitarists and i love it

The greatest teacher in the world: you. At least one of them. Period. Love your muse. Regards from Buenos Aires.
That Hendrix riff you pulled off at 2:40 was killer! I'm going to "practice" that right now. 😃
When you’re motivated you can move a mountain.
So so true, even more so the olded I get. I have a few years left to work on exciting things not to practice. Thanks for putting out the greatest tip of life.
I’m glad you said that! I also hate “practicing” even though I know I should ☺️
‘Burning Desire’ Jimi song, that he was never able to fully realize, though there are a few killer live versions, with which one can hear most of the ideas he was putting together for the song.
Thank you for another great lesson. You are a natural born teacher. It is a pleasure to learn from you.
You're very welcome brother, thanks for tuning in!
Hi Thom, you a real philosopher. It is always about self-motivation. And this is dependant on having fun by doing something. By the way, do you have a degree of a "classical" music conservatory?
I do yeah, it's only recently that I play the piano again, probably because of the pandemic there was not much to do anyway
Yes he is!
Biff!!! I always forget his real name
Thomas F. Wilson

That was one weird guitar you used for the outro
I just wish we had more videos from him than once a week.
Really really...really...and simply...thank you.
Great fun..
Stay tuned for the upcoming piano lesson😜
Thanks ! Its just the kindof fresh thought I needed during these times, it transcends well into other parts of my life. You excite me to pickup the guitar and I've discovered so many old treasures. Thank you again !

Magic philosophy. So funny, but damn true👍
Which song is this? 1:27
It's called 'have you ever been to electric ladyland'
Fantastic video. I couldn't agree more with your message. I love the Alan Watts sprinkled in for good measure.
I love this video and the message you share with EXCITEMENT! :)
So..those are real piano's in the background ……….
You are a extra ordinary person and a extra ordinary musician, and a extra ordinary music teacher.
Thank you for your life lesson..or rather very good advice.
I was just getting ready to practice!
This is inspiring thank you l was wondering what would make scales enjoyable in the same way
Great "lesson". It's why we call it "play" music. Look how many times he uses the word "play". Play on.

I agree completely, but I myself do not have ‘the ear’ to play the songs I love.

I love this video Pilgrim! Wu Wei is real and important. Sticking to a practice routine is what I want to do but not as fun as jamming over Little Wing. Maybe a compromise to reach my guitar goals? Onw of the best video from one of the best guitar channels around.
I loved that little shot of Alan Watts thrown in there! WU WEI. Practice without practicing.
the building blocks a fk boring, need to comit to more than a minute before playing
Never understood those people that play for years and they just quit from one day to the next. Like... whats up with that? How can they?
Some great sage advice...thank you
I think you said Ferocious instead of Voracious but I think it fits better in English like that anyway
Great tip! Thanks!👍👍🎸
Your a terrific man Mr Guitar Pilgram...and a breath of fresh air👍
That was a beautiful piano piece you played at the end of the video. Can you tell us the name so maybe I can get the sheet music. Great video as usual. Oops, just noticed the Comment section you say it is a mazurka by Chopin. Thanks. ciao.

I don't think this is a guitar lesson rather than a spiritual talk.
Now that's exciting !
I've just had a discussion about that of-ten.
My first song I played was foxy lady 😆
I had taken up guitar at, lets say 15 years old when I bought a 72 Telecaster!. I was really excited and motivated then, and I had time and money to buy guitar stuff.
