just brought my mower out from garage after winter. pulled but did not start. checked filter and gas, both good. checked plug, good. that's as far as my mechanic ability goes, but saw this video and it gave me the courage to try taking off carb. followed the video to the tee. everything came off and went back on just as described and shown. gave it a pull and cranked right up. This is my first ever comment on anything, but we'll worth it to say thanks for doing the video. cheers!
I have a craftsman M230, 165cc. that has very similar design and it won't start this summer. i left some gas from last year in it. Changed spark plugs this year and cleaned out filter. i guess i should check the carb. Hwo can i tell if carb is bad? What can i do to prevent it from going bad every season?
@Derek - I'm in the same boat... never commented, but had to... thanks to this video, rebuilding the carburetor after losing and forgetting the needle on the driveway, the lawn mower fired right up... Thank you...
I took my carburetor apart 3 times and cleaned it, only to have it crank and run about 3 seconds before it would go dead every time. I found this video right before taking the mower to the dump. I never took the white plug with the 3 legs out before and cleaned the small holes in it. Didn't know it even came out. Long story short, I took a wire bread tie & carburetor cleaner to it, put it all back together, pumped the primer bubble and pulled the rope. It cranked right up and ran as smooth as the day I bought it. Thanks for your help and saving my mower 😊.
I thought I had stripped and thoroughly cleaned my carb, but had had no joy. Finding out that that small, white nylon insert is not only removable (I hadn't wanted to force it, so I just sprayed the top of it) but a very likely culprit was exactly the info I needed. Gentle persuasion, a little reaming with a thin piece of steel wire and some more carb cleaner....reassembled, primed, crossed my fingers and...first pull! A completely excellent video, for me! Thank you!
This video is exactly what I need to know! My mower is acting the same problem. Now I don't need to get anymore annoyed. I was gonna take it to the middle of my property and use a little bit of Tannerite. Thankfully I watched your video and seen the problem. Thank you for explaining in detail. Keep up the great videos.
This saved me, opened a new mower, put oil in the gas tank :( But pulled the thing apart with the help of this video and everything is operational! Thank you!!
My mower (Toro Model # 20339) would spark and start but then cut off (I tried several times). I followed the instructions in this video and it started and ran. I shut it off and restarted and now it's running like a champ! I was so excited that I came back in to write these comments before going out to cut the grass. Thank you so much!!!!
Excellent tutorial on that carb!! I just picked up the exact mower a couple days ago, engine would not start and it was supposedly only used 4 times, followed your guide and found plugged jets, cleaned them out an 1st pull it fired up! One thing I would suggest to people that have this type of mower and carb problems, put a fuel filter in line after you get it running I think when they cheaped out this version and did not add a fuel filter its pretty easy to clog the jets up.
where do you put fuel filter? have any tutorial on it? I have a craftsman M230, 165cc. that has very similar design and it won't start this summer. i left some gas from last year in it. Changed spark plugs this year and cleaned out filter. i guess i should check the carb. Hwo can i tell if carb is bad? What can i do to prevent it from going bad every season?
This worked on a bolens push mower with the briggs and stratton engine. one modification, I did not have to remove the top cover. It was quite easy to remove the carburetor by simply maneuvering it off the choke wire. Replacement was equally simple. Thanks for the video, saved me having to buy a new mower.
I thought it unlikely that as of 2016 Briggs & Stratton would apparently still be using SAE fasteners and hadn't converted to metric like the entire automotive and aerospace industries worldwide, especially on an all-new engine design.
Add me to the list of those who were able to get their mower running thanks to this video. After a winter of storage I tried Mechanic in a Bottle, SeaFoam and fuel injector cleaner with no results. Engine would fire on starter fluid but would not catch. Watched the video, took the carb apart and 20 minutes later......voila! Only thing harder than shown was getting that pesky linkage wire off, but it was all much easier than expected. Many thanks, Hank!
Hey Hank, Thanks soooo much for taking the time to shoot and publish this simple carb cleaning video! I bought a nearly new lawnmower that wouldn't start from a pawn shop today thinking 'how tough can it be' to get it running. Went through all the routine stuff; fresh gas, clean air filter, check spark add a spritz of starting fluid but the thing would only fire on the ether and quit unless I kept spritzing more fluid to keep it alive. Went through the carb once before watching your video but it didn't help a bit. Easily found your channel and this tutorial on a RUclips search. Since you include the parts where you remove the white plastic jet assembly, separate it into two pieces and clean jet orifices with .020 wire I had the confidence and determination to go through it again. After following the detailed steps you went through the irksome mower started on the 2nd pull and now starts easily on the first pull every time!! Wishing you the best in all your RUclips channels endeavors! Regards, Matt Next Level Carpentry
Have a Troy Bilt mower that died this weekend. I figured it was bad gas. Removed and cleaned the carb and Voila, it runs perfectly. Your video was a "HUGE" help. Thank you. Very well done
Thank you so much for this super detailed video!! I've never even tried to work on a lawnmower before but your video made it look so easy so I thought I would give it a try. It was really easy to do and this totally fixed the problem I was having with my lawnmower. So empowering to do this myself. Thanks again!!
I'm a 68-yr old Grandma who is ready to give it a try, too, after watching these videos. But first I need to buy the carb cleaner, wire, nitrile gloves and hex wrench set for my drill. A very inspiring and thorough video. Thank you, Hank. And Thank You, Nora for giving me the courage to try.
By all means get hand protection. I am so enthused by you ladies trying to do this mower repair. It's not hard but if you're like me, I have bad knees. I need my mower lifted so my knees are not under strain. But you can do it.
Briggs used to be a good mower, but after 2 bad experiences on brand new Briggs and Stratton engines, I returned it for a full refund and got a mower with a Honda engine. Now I will not buy anything but Honda small engines. Why mess with all the trouble, if you didn't get stuck with it? My advise is to avoid Briggs like the plague.
I totally agree. Mine didn't last even 4 months of use and its having starting issues. Ive took it apart and cleaned it 2 twice and still won't start. The old briggs style I had before this one lasted 5 years with no problems
Sir I just want you to know that you are a saint sent from above!! I just watched this today because my mower wouldn't start after sitting for 5 months. I followed your instructions to a T and it cranked right up!! Saved me $80 to get it diagnosed and repaired. I tried to skip the wire part where you clean the little holes with it and it didn't work so I had to take everything apart all over and clean it that little wire and then it worked:) anyone reading this comment, make you follow every single step!!!
Mower wouldn't start after not using it for 3 months. Watched this video one time, was able to completely disassemble, fix, and reassemble my carb. Mower runs like a champ again... thanks for helping me out. I appreciate the time you took to made this video for us all. Honestly, it was probably just old gas causing my issue, but this was by far the fastest and most effective way to remove all that old gas from the carb.
Let me add to all the successful comments here. One year old mower wouldn’t start after leaving gas in all winter. Tried all the simple stuff first, nothing worked. When I was cleaning the carb it didn’t even look that dirty, but it started right up after. Thank you so much for saving me the cost of buying a new mower!
Brilliant Video, showing this particular plastic carb, detailing the strip down and where to careful, giving me the confidence to strip the carb as advised, purchase a can of carb cleaner, take apart, clean, put together, refit and heah presto, one very happy chappie, with the lawn mower firing up straight away, amazing. Thank You very much for posting this, definitely saved some cash, as I was going to take it to a repair shop! 5 stars!
I find a good icy cold lonestar beer works better when working on any carbs. But to be truthful a good icy cold bud works just as well, thanks for making this video . BR549
Thank you sir! This video is so helpful and is the only video on RUclips that I could find on these new carburetors. I had my lawnmower for only a year and was getting ready to get a new one. I could not figure out how to open and perform maintenance on the carburetor. I was getting frustrated that as an IT professional that I could not figure out a "simple" lawnmower. Definitely a reality check for me. Anyway, thank you! and blessings to you and your family!
The first time you have to take this carb apart, drill thru the jet with a 0.012" drill bit. then the jet won't be prone to clogging, and the engine will run better and stronger......the EPA reg's make these carbs run way too lean, which is remedied once you overbore the main jet.
Thank you! My neighbor was throwing away his TroyBilt mower out of frustration and I needed a mower. I found your video and hour later I'm cutting grass. Thanks so much. Saved me $300 on a new mower. Tip to others, I was able to get it to run briefly with starter fluid before I followed these instructions. I knew I had compression and spark. Had to be the gas or air. Also, In welding area of HD or lowes, you can find reamer kit with different diameter rods. Use this to clean the orifices. Handy to unclog windshield wiper jets too!
Parts and links are in video description above Also for the record, the safety wire I used was issued to us, some of the ornery old men who watch this video seem to get their panties in a wad over thinking it was stolen.
Just wanted to say- After multiple attempts to fix this crap, this video is finally what did it. The plastic holes were gunked up. A little carb cleaner cleared it right up!! Just finished mowing, now enjoying a celebratory beer. Cheers to you, sir!
Nice video but I drill out the main jet with a # 72 drill bit .025 works great , starts first pull ,,,,even the ones without the auto choke . I'm a 74 year old machinist and I'm like you " Old School "
Thank you for posting this, I googled earlier and found no results, so I assumed the plastic carb parts were not something I could work on, just replace. This video saved me having to take two mowers to the shop for repairs $$$. Taking the carb apart was easy, at first I thought the parts were molded together. Awesome and they are running like champs!
briggs really dicked the dog on these new motors, its not all their fault though part of it is the EPA laws which got worse for small engines that coupled with gas that has ethanol in it means these junk carbs break down pretty fast. I recommend people go with either a honda mower, or a mower with a honda motor on it. Im really not a fan of these new briggs motors.
Agreed. I have this mower and really like it... except for the carb. The plus side... I've learned a lot about small engine repair over the last few years!! Thisvsummer, I grabbed a replacement carb ($20 Home Depot). Soooo much faster than taking it all apart every time I need to use the mower. Troy Bilt ought to send owners free replacement carbs to live up to their "Ready Start" guarantee.
Yo - you are the MAN - so - I’m 51 yrs old and always had my friends that would help me out to fix things like this- of course I was their helper or at least Beer and Burger provider while they did the work - my fiancé bought a new mower - used a bad can of gas to fill it on the 4th or 5th use and it varnished up the carb - I didn’t want to look like a chump - so I went to RUclips and saw your Video - and lemme tell you what - I followed your directions to a tee - and 45 min later that mower was purring !!! And at 51 yrs old - I’ve learned something new and appreciate the simple instructions and straight forward method you provide with your instructional videos !! You Da Man !! Rhino Out
This by far is the BEST video to watch, the other guys skip the most important part of taking the main jet APART after the removal, I discovered by accident you had to do this, actually after taking one apart 3 times i figured out what i was missing, VERY CRITICAL, THANKS DUDE!
Fellow a&p here! I work exclusively on TPE 331 Garretts at a complete hot and cold repair and overhaul shop. Add me to the list of people who was saved by this video. I had forgot to run the gas out when the season ended last year. When I went to fire it up, I got nothing. I was pretty sure it was the carburetor. I found a replacement on amazon for 35, but I decided to see if I could find a repair guide. That's when I came across your video. I followed your directions and it fired right up on the second crank! Thank you so much sir!
I spent an entire day looking for this info. about to order a new carb and one last check online, found your video. I pulled that carb apart twice. didn't think the white plastic piece came apart, sounded like I was cracking it when I tried. Low and behold your video got the mower running and saved me $30 Thank you !
Glad it helped you! Ya I think there may be an issue with these plastic jets aging... As they get older it wouldn't surprise me if they start cracking that said if they can sell rebuild kits for them for a decent price that would be nice
This was PERFECT, mower was BRAND NEW last year but after heavy heavy rain it will start n not run....know what I'm doin tomarrow. THANK YOU for the video
From a guy who is a complete moron when it comes to fixing anything I have to thank you for this video. You saved me time and money with your step by step instructions on this plastic carburetor.
You are AWESOME. I have never worked on a lawnmower before but everything you said worked perfectly. This lawnmower was only a year old but previous owner had left gas in it. After following your instructions I have a working 300.00 mower. Thank so much 😊😊😊😊
leaving gas in it causes build up? Is it better to dump left over gas at the end of season? While mowing is it better to let it run out of gas or not a good idea?
Just wanted to say thank you! Nearly 6 years later and this video is still extremely helpful. Fixed my non-starting mower with your directions in time for the big party. Thanks and all the best to you!
Fantastic job in making a common problem a easy to do choir that most newer lawnmmowers have to have done. Thanks for the time you spent making this video
Along with all the other commenters, Thanks very much for this video! I literally just cleaned mine this morning but didn't know how to remove the white plastic jet.. nor did I know what the thing looked like! And now I know why it wouldn't stay on. You get 👍👍
Have a Toro 22” 7.25hp I bought at Home Depot May 28, 2018. After sitting through the winter, I tried to start it last week. No go. Took it back to HD and they were going to charge me $80 to clean out carb. I watched this video and I’m about 45 minutes had it running. Thanks man!!
This video deserves a thousand "likes". Finally a video that takes you step by step - beginning to end. So many videos leave out steps or start in the middle of a task. Not this one...Outstanding!!!!
Thanks for posting this. An elderly neighbor I help with yard work occasionally has a Troybilt Briggs with the plastic carb and I may have to clean it this Spring. Finally bought one of those mag trays and it's already paid for itself! Weather is starting to turn here in Mass; it hit the 60's this weekend. Of course, I know the minute I winterize the snow blower I'll regret it. lol
I wish I had found this video two days ago. I was dropping a few f bombs trying to get the mower started. Your video was the most complete, easy to understand how to video I have seen in a long time.
Thank you, Hank, for the advice and part numbers on a replacement carburetor. I went to Amazon and purchased it instead of buying the parts for a rebuild. Cost just a handful of dollars more than the kit. Took this 86 year old all of 30 minutes to replace it on a Craftsman 6.25 Gold, 4 wheel drive.
Glad it helped, thats always the other option should someone not want to tear into the old one to begin with. Make sure to treat your gas with a fuel stabilizer such as Stabil when the machine is not in use.
Hank, I want to thank you brother. This is the 2nd year in a row I've had to watch this video (didn't learn my lesson about draining the gas for the winter the first time haha). At least this time I remembered how to take the carb off, got stuck on taking it apart and came back here! Great video. I'm not a very mechanically oriented guy but this is perfect!
I ran into my first one of these today. Your tutorial was excellent and no doubt saved me a bunch of aggravation. I do have one small caution to add: When sliding the pin into the float be sure it slides in the hole on both flanges. My eyesight's not what it once was and I missed that it tipped and slid across instead of through the second bracket. No biggy, a little spilled gasoline and one more time off machine. It's so subtle and not what you would normally expect so I thought it worth mentioning as an addition.
I followed your very clear and precise directions to the letter and my mower started and ran immediately! Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience with us, you saved me a bunch of time and money! Thanks again!!
This was very helpful! My mower literally sat 2 years without use. I followed this and it now starts better than when I first purchased it! Thank you!!!
Great instructions. I followed it step by step. Solved problem on my first trial. It was easier than I'd thought. My mower was brand new ran about 10 times. It does not take much gum to stop machine from starting. I did not see any thing at all. I opened it, sprayed it with compressed air sprayer and poked it with small wire. I used the tinny copper wire strand I obtained from stripping off the plastic covering of the electric wire I found in my house.
I’m not mechanically inclined in the least, and this video walked me through exactly what I needed to do to fix our mower! Thank you for the time and effort to put this video together. You allowed me to have a “manly win” today!
Spot on!!! My lawnmower has been sitting in storage for almost two years. I tried fresh fuel in the tank and removing the cover to the carb and spraying some cleaner up in there hoping that might work. It sputtered a bit but would not turn over. I followed your video step by step and before you know it, the backyard was done, wife was happy and our own little world was right again. Thank you for taking the time to post this. Job well done 👍
I can't thank you enough for this video. I've saved it, reviewed it and literally taken it out to my workshop with me to fix my lawnmower. Turned out I needed a new carburetor period, but I rebuilt the old one TWICE to try and get it running. Your video gave me the confidence to do that and learn from my own mistakes and trust my own judgment when I had to accept that there was just something wrong with the old carburetor. So.. I bought a new one and installed it! Using your video again to help guide me. During the installation of the new one, I realized that the one I bought didn't come with a specific piece that was needed (the little arm that the overheat wire attaches to) but by really looking at the carburetor I realized that entire unit can come off via the spring assembly. So I was able to frankenstein the part I needed. Which I never would have been able to do had I not studied your video so in-depth. And... VOILA' .. lawnmower is running like a top and my knee-high grass is a goner. Thank you so much! Saved me a couple of hundred bucks for a new mower.
I found a TB200 on the curb for trash pickup. Tried starting it and it surged a lot along with some smoking. Air filter was completely clogged with oil. And it had been overfilled by about a quart of oil. I changed the oil and it runs better. It starts first pull but still has a little lope. A carb cleaning is now on the list of things to do. Thanks for the detailed video!
This worked perfect for me, so anybody can do it. Best of all, no replacement parts needed. Now that I have done it once, I think I could do it in about 30 minutes. This Bud's for you!
The one missing piece of the puzzle was I had a spring left over. Thank you that you had it on the top of the carb. not sure why the other models didn't have it or the videographer forgot it! After cleaning the jet hole it fired on the first pull no ether needed. TY!
Perfect, Thanks. Mower would start and run for 2 seconds. Figured it was a clogged jet but could not see how to remove the inner plastic part with the jets in it. This worked like a charm, but now no excuse to not mow lawn :-)
You just saved me 40-50$ at least! I don't know anything about motors but I followed your video exactly and it worked first pull! 3.97$ for carb cleaner and that's it. Thank you, great video!
Thank you so much for this video. After letting my year old lawn mower sit in the garage without starting it it wouldn't start looked it up and almost everybody was saying it would carburetors pretty-much gummed up so I looked at your video watched it about five times and just got done and my mower is running thank you thank you thank you
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain the process in such detail and for working close to the camera so we the viewers can see exactly what you are doing and how you are doing it.
If it helps others, I did a slightly modified version of this fix. My mower is less than a year old, but hadn't been used in about 6 months. As soon as I got the carburetor off the mower and opened the bottom, I carefully inserted a small sewing needle into the exposed jet, as I suspected that was all that was clogged. I never bothered removing the float valve or pulling the jet assembly apart. I then put it back together and it started up just fine. With all that said, big thanks to the maker of this video, as I wouldn't have had a clue how to remove the carburetor without it.
Appreciate the video. After finding some white varnish crystal flakes in the fuel tank I wanted to clean the carb and jets but wanted to check RUclips out before proceeding. Came apart and back together with no problem. Surprisingly the carb was very clean. Just enough crystalline buildup in the tank to restrict the flow to the carb. Runs great now. Thanks.
I've rebuilt small and large engine carburetors for years, but this one was head scratcher. I'm a big guy and get guys-shy around plastic parts because I've broken too many. Your video was just what I needed to pull the jet assembly. Keep up the good work!
I just ran across a Briggs 550ex at a garage sale for $15. The owner told me it doesn't work and he has no need for it anymore since he has a landscaper. It looked almost new and I followed your video today. Well it runs like champ and I can't thank you enough!!! If you're ever in NY, the beers are on me!!
Absolute amazing video, had the same problem, wouldn't start and despite everything looking good and clean. Still followed every step and now it's running. Just saved me $85 for a tune up! Thanks for being THAT guy.
Thank you for this video. The culprit was the same as yours. This was my first time working on a plastic carburetor. No carb cleaner required. Lawn mower works like a charm from the very first pull.
DIY guy here. I’ve had a ton of small carbs apart over the years and most DIY guys like myself can almost always figure it out on our own, but it’s always nice to have a short concise little video to help guide you through the process so you know exactly what to expect. That being said, I greatly appreciate the video. Thanks!!!
@@jj-eo7bj if I’m not mistaking what you’re talking about, the circular neck goes into the base of the carburetor and NOT into the engine block. If you want to double check me, you can type into RUclips Briggs & Stratton carburetor removal to see the adapter plate being removed from factory location. Hope this helps. Good luck!
Thank you brother. I thought I was gonna have to buy a new mower. But I followed your guide and mine works fine now. I have the same mower in your video so with your help it was very easy.
Thought I had cleaned it. Would not start. Watched your video very closely. Took the carb apart (again). Did everything in your video. I did not ever figure out what was wrong or dirty, but now the mower runs like new. Thanks.
I watched another video , much shorter, and all i had to do was pull out the jet assembly and poke a wire in the jets, put 'er back together and it started right up. It was definitely that jet assembly - there was a clog in there. Before I cleaned it the mower absolutely would not start. Then out of curiosity I watched your video. Great job explaining everything. I didn't bother with the carb cleaner spray as the mower is only a year old and I needed to get going. Thanks for the detailed video. Ciao.
Wow Thanks a ton!!! the first time I cleaned the carb..I didn't clean out that white piece that was in the carb housing... was about to give up but found your vid... cleaned a small clogged jet hole... Booom! fires up and stays on! You the Man!
One of my neighbors left one of these at the end of the driveway and today I grabbed it. It looks to be in decent shape. Now I know how to work on the carburetor if it is not starting.
This video helped squash what was becoming quite a heated environment, lol. I was able to disassemble and then reassemble the carb which solved the issue of the mower not running allowing me to mow. Thank you!
Excellent video! I've watched several videos on this, and attempted it, and managed to reassemble it improperly like three times. Your video was one of the only ones that covered that ridiculous sleeve inside of the venturi, as well as covering the arrangement of the linkages. You also showed the gasket and ring between the carb and the engine--- I actually tried to slide these onto the tube itself, which resulted in a manifold leak and oil getting dumped through the breather and getting smoked out of my garage!! Thanks for posting and helping me get this thing working again!!!
Thanks Hank for another great video. I trash picked a Troy Bilt TB200 and had her running in less than 20 minutes. First plastic carb teardown for me but not too bad.
I had the same issue as everyone else. Tried mowing the grass the first time this year, it did not start. Fallowed your video, i was skeptical as i didn’t see any gunks inside the carbs but i had some break cleaner and blew all the holes out, put it back together, first pull it fired up. Couldn’t believe it:) thanks very much for making this detailed video!
I had put some bad gas in my mower and killed it. I was reluctant to dig into the carburetor (I've not had much success with carbs) but replacement carbs are not currently available and very expensive, so I gave it a try. I just followed the video carefully and it fired right up! Great video! The only things I did differently was to shoot some closeup pics of the linkage before I took it apart, and I used an old "B" guitar string in lieu of safety wire. Thanks again!
Thanks for the excellent video. I learned that the white part comes apart. One side of my float was full of gas and will replace it tomorrow. Thanks again from Mobile Al. The home of Mardi Gras.
Thank you so much for this upload!! My mower was surging and eventually would not stay cranked. I followed your very clear steps and cleaned the carb, put it back together, and it started on the first pull...and ran great!!Thanks again!
Thank you for the video it help me tremendously. I have a Troy Bilt TB230 less than a year old and it wouldn't start. When I took the bowl bottom off my float pin fell out, I think that was the culprit but I went ahead and cleaned the carburetor. I put it all back together and it fired right up. Thanks again!
This video was solid gold. Thank you for taking the time. I was able to disassemble the carburetor and reinstall it by myself after cleaning it. That combined with replacing the spark plug saved me what I was going to spend taking it to a repair man.
thank you , thank you, thank you. I had already done everything except pulling that white plastic insert inside, with no luck. after pulling that and cleaning it, the motor fired up right away and runs great.
Thank you for doing this video. I got my mower running again thanks to you and saved a bunch of time and money because of it. I couldn't find any wire the size you have but the carburetor cleaner worked all the same. Thanks again.
FINALLY able to get my mower started thanks to your video. Every other video out there had the old-style carburetor with the metal bowl. Thank you for taking the time to film and post this, you’re a life saver.
just brought my mower out from garage after winter. pulled but did not start. checked filter and gas, both good. checked plug, good. that's as far as my mechanic ability goes, but saw this video and it gave me the courage to try taking off carb. followed the video to the tee. everything came off and went back on just as described and shown. gave it a pull and cranked right up. This is my first ever comment on anything, but we'll worth it to say thanks for doing the video. cheers!
Nice work man ...
InstaBlaster.
Ditto - just finished cleaning and rebuilding mine - purring like a kitten now!
For anyone watching in 2019 those are 8mm and 7mm sockets. Great video, Thanks.
I thought it unlikely that as of 2016 Briggs & Stratton would apparently still be using SAE fasteners and hadn't converted to metric like the entire automotive and aerospace industries worldwide, especially on an all-new engine design.
@@Milosz_Ostrow What size are the shroud bolts...
Sweet man, happy mowing
Hey Hank,
Thanks soooo much for taking the time to shoot and publish this simple carb cleaning video!
Regards,
Matt

glad it helped ya matt thanks for the comment!
I bought mine new and let it sit for a year. Had this vid on my phone and followed it step by step, including ordering safety wire. Worked seamlessly.
But you can do it.
make sure you have eye protection goggles or glasses to protect eyes from spray carb cleaner or brake parts cleaner
You taught the mail lady how to fix her lawnmower!!! Absolutely perfect video! Thank you!!!
Best advice for these carbs is to Avoid them! Thanks for the video.
Agreed, Briggs really screwed up with these
Briggs used to be a good mower, but after 2 bad experiences on brand new Briggs and Stratton engines, I returned it for a full refund and got a mower with a Honda engine. Now I will not buy anything but Honda small engines. Why mess with all the trouble, if you didn't get stuck with it? My advise is to avoid Briggs like the plague.
Yep I avoid them to I call them briggs and scrapum
I totally agree. Mine didn't last even 4 months of use and its having starting issues. Ive took it apart and cleaned it 2 twice and still won't start. The old briggs style I had before this one lasted 5 years with no problems
@@hanksgarage_ I followed your video and mower starts and runs low idle for 3 seconds then dies. Any suggestions?
Sir I just want you to know that you are a saint sent from above!! I just watched this today because my mower wouldn't start after sitting for 5 months. I followed your instructions to a T and it cranked right up!! Saved me $80 to get it diagnosed and repaired. I tried to skip the wire part where you clean the little holes with it and it didn't work so I had to take everything apart all over and clean it that little wire and then it worked:) anyone reading this comment, make you follow every single step!!!
Thanks Hank!! I did exactly what u did and my mower started up!! If you're ever in Atlanta beer is on me!!
I drank more Budweiser and everything turned out great
Lol yup
Does it have to be Budweiser, or can you drink any alcohol when rebuilding the carb?
latasha66 lol
The Bud isn't for drinking. Use it to clean the carb out. Great on ethanol deposits.
Mike Hoont facts!!
A million thanks for this video. Saved me time and money fixing my lawn mower.
BR549
Debbie Smith facts!
It’s all good man. Glad you got it sorted
The first time you have to take this carb apart, drill thru the jet with a 0.012" drill bit. then the jet won't be prone to clogging, and the engine will run better and stronger......the EPA reg's make these carbs run way too lean, which is remedied once you overbore the main jet.
Hey Glenn. Which is the jet to which you are referring? I see three tubes.
GLENN JILES the jet?
It's the one he calls a thing ? The one you can see before you pull it out
Parts and links are in video description above
Also for the record, the safety wire I used was issued to us, some of the ornery old men who watch this video seem to get their panties in a wad over thinking it was stolen.
Hank's Small Engine Repair thanks for the help man. Worked like a charm. I drank corona though.
Thanks Hank!! I was given a gorgeous Toro 22in Recycler and it wouldn't start. Followed the video and it started first pull.
Hank's Small Engine Repair do know what's wrong with my 2010 lt2000 Craftsman riding lawn mower. It won't crank over to start.
If the jet is broke where can I get a new one at? Please help.
Your video squared me away! As soon as I cleaned my carb and reinstalled it, it fired right up!
Just wanted to say-
After multiple attempts to fix this crap, this video is finally what did it. The plastic holes were gunked up. A little carb cleaner cleared it right up!! Just finished mowing, now enjoying a celebratory beer. Cheers to you, sir!
It's a shame how bad these carbs get in such a short amount of time. Briggs dropped the ball with them imo. Now enjoy that beer man !
Thank a lot man, you helped me a lot with this video, I truly appreciate your clear explanation!
Nice video but I drill out the main jet with a # 72 drill bit .025 works great , starts first pull ,,,,even the ones without the auto choke . I'm a 74 year old machinist and I'm like you " Old School "
i fixed my own problem with this video! thank you!!!!!
Thank you for posting this, I googled earlier and found no results, so I assumed the plastic carb parts were not something I could work on, just replace. This video saved me having to take two mowers to the shop for repairs $$$. Taking the carb apart was easy, at first I thought the parts were molded together. Awesome and they are running like champs!
have a craftsman mower with the same carburetor on it peace of junk don't buy it, had to do this about 20 times so far in one year
briggs really dicked the dog on these new motors, its not all their fault though part of it is the EPA laws which got worse for small engines that coupled with gas that has ethanol in it means these junk carbs break down pretty fast.

Awesome dude
Mower was 5 months old and wouldn't crank. Rebuilt and cleaned carb after watching this and it fired right up. Thank you!
I just cleaned one of these this past weekend on my father-in-law's mower. It was a very easy job, thanks to all the videos on RUclips, like this one.
Of course, I know the minute I winterize the snow blower I'll regret it. lol
Sure buddy no problem yea they are pretty easy to work on. I just wonder how they will age being full plastic
I wish I had found this video two days ago. I was dropping a few f bombs trying to get the mower started. Your video was the most complete, easy to understand how to video I have seen in a long time.
I've worked on a few and I can't hate them. Easy fixers. A welder nozzle cleaning wire set is the best tool I have bought yet.
+stephen palmer glad it helped man!!
I've watched a few similar videos and have seen the main jet removed. But you showed us how to actually take the main jet apart. Good job!
That clearly looked like It worked! Glad it did.
I’m not mechanically inclined in the least, and this video walked me through exactly what I needed to do to fix our mower! Thank you for the time and effort to put this video together. You allowed me to have a “manly win” today!
Cleaned many carbs...this was my first pop at one of the newer plastic ones. Thanks for the video. Covered all bases and worked like a champ.
Fixed my mower, today, thanks to this video ... had it 5 months - runs better than ever!! Thank you for this video!
Appreciate the video. After finding some white varnish crystal flakes in the fuel tank I wanted to clean the carb and jets but wanted to check RUclips out before proceeding. Came apart and back together with no problem. Surprisingly the carb was very clean. Just enough crystalline buildup in the tank to restrict the flow to the carb. Runs great now. Thanks.
glad it helped you, yea on these mowers its probably best to do this once a year before the season starts just to be sure
If you're ever in NY, the beers are on me!!
glad it worked out for ya man, 15 bucks aint bad!
I still cant believe it, it was just a simple clog...
Absolute amazing video, had the same problem, wouldn't start and despite everything looking good and clean. Still followed every step and now it's running. Just saved me $85 for a tune up!
Thanks for being THAT guy.
Awesome bro
Did it; and it worked. I also added a cap of injector cleaner.
Now I'm getting one pull starts. Kudos to you.
Thanks!!!
Happen to know on a briggs n Stratton carb spacer has a flat side and a circular part that sticks out ,does that go into the block or into the carb ?
@@jj-eo7bj if I’m not mistaking what you’re talking about, the circular neck goes into the base of the carburetor and NOT into the engine block. If you want to double check me, you can type into RUclips Briggs & Stratton carburetor removal to see the adapter plate being removed from factory location. Hope this helps. Good luck!
@@addie750 that does answer my question, thank you !!
@@jj-eo7bj Very welcome! 😁👍🏻
Thank you so much! My husband and I just fixed our lawnmower by watching this video! Your step by step instructions were super helpful for us newbies!
Glad it helped!
Ciao.
glad you got yours working man
Wow Thanks a ton!!! the first time I cleaned the carb..I didn't clean out that white piece that was in the carb housing... was about to give up but found your vid... cleaned a small clogged jet hole... Booom! fires up and stays on! You the Man!
Dude! Thanks so much! I was able to cut my grass and you saved me like $400. Great video!
one of the best videos on you tube for this carburetor.....Watch the flange carefully. It can cost you headaches if it's not seated correctly
Thank you!
lol about to push the mower into a speeding train I presume?
To say the least.
Thanks for the video! I too am an aircraft mechanic but I'd never messed with small engines before and this video was super helpful. Thanks again!
glad it helped!
Plastic carburetors? Who knew? Thanks for the education Hank.
Guitar strings work just fine, as long as its wide enough to scrape the hell out of the sides!
Just did this following your instructions and the mower fired up on first pull. You are the man!!!
+Anthony Neal congrats man! Crack a beer!
Thanks for the excellent video. I learned that the white part comes apart. One side of my float was full of gas and will replace it tomorrow. Thanks again from Mobile Al. The home of Mardi Gras.
Glad it helped
Thank you so much for this upload!! My mower was surging and eventually would not stay cranked. I followed your very clear steps and cleaned the carb, put it back together, and it started on the first pull...and ran great!!Thanks again!
Thank you for the video it help me tremendously. I have a Troy Bilt TB230 less than a year old and it wouldn't start. When I took the bowl bottom off my float pin fell out, I think that was the culprit but I went ahead and cleaned the carburetor. I put it all back together and it fired right up. Thanks again!
Right on man, glad it helped ya out
This video was solid gold.
