Maria and the Eternal Gardens
The miracle of the Eternal Gardens of Metropolis were created to serve as the exclusive playground for the ruling classes. In the Gardens, a group of extravagantly dressed young women have gathered and are asked “Which of you ladies shall today have the honor of entertaining Master Freder, Joh Fredersen’s son?” Joh Fredersen is the ruler of Metropolis and the upper classes.
After a bit of frolicking about, one of the women catches Freder’s eye and he is about to kiss her when a plainly dressed woman surrounded by a group of shabbily dressed children enters the gardens. The woman is Maria and she has brought the children to see the Gardens.
Freder and the others stand stunned by the intrusion when Maria declares to the children “Look! These are your brothers!” Guards are quickly summoned and Freder stares as if smitten by Maria’s presence. He clutches his heart as Maria and the children are escorted out of the Gardens.
