I am stunned by the winner's piece of art. It has so many details for the eye to notice, even after careful observation. I particularly liked that the space behind the Marine's head has a noticable fading halo shape, like a Byzantine of Rennaisance representation of a saint or an angel. Coupled with her slim head and facial expression, it is so much drawing from the tradition of Christian iconography, exactly the feel that an average citizen of the Imperium would have for one of His Angels, not only as physical, but also as spiritual being, a manifestation of the Divine. Perfect!
Thank you! I used Joan of Arc by Harold Hume Piffard as a reference for it, as well as looking a lot of Rennaisance and religious art - the bit behind her head is a fake pearl button from some costume jewellery, I liked the effect so much I masked it off when painting it, so it still gives a warm diffuse reflection. Thanks for your amazing content, and relaying such challenges. I especially liked the vibe, or the mood, of the second place, but the first place is certainly stunning, with its totally-40k-over-the-topness. Your channel has introduced me to a whole new world, with old bits and new concepts for models. I am a lazy, absolutely not original hobbyist, having only recently made a very timid attempt at one conversion; when I see such work, I am fascinated, a bit intimidated as well for sure, but kind of inspired to try things after all. Even if I can never hope to get to this level. So thanks as well for that.
Great video, super hyped to have won, thanks for the awesome run down of the models, made my day. 😂 Old Paint not old lead, but maybe I should have tried that as well 😂🖤💪
I think that the 1st and 3rd place entries really hit what a female Marine would look like. They're not going to be sexualized. They're not going to be feminine. They're going to have a crewcut. They're going to be utilitarian. Even the second place entry, while more feminine, gets into that Blood Angels old-timey hair glory rather then leaning hard into femininity. She has warpaint, not power mascara. She has long hair, but that's what Celts or Scots would have had, not a giant Farrah Fawcett-style hairdo. And none of them had boob plates, super-hips, or a Barbie waist. And I'm glad to hear that there wasn't a problem with cheesecake entries. At the end of the day though, we already have female Space Marines. If ever they were going to exist, you know they'd be Emperor's Children.
I thought his accent sounded very familiar! After just a bit of snooping I can confirm, this man is a fellow Swedish speaking Finn. Good, now I can keep watching the video.
I think I preferred the 2nd place entry as an individual model and detail in painting, loved the tartan loincloth and claymore-like chainsword to induce the celtic look, but the 1st place entry was amazing for provoking an almost religious feeling and the sense of a moment in time by the entire diorama.
Some fantastic entries. Well done to the finalists and 28 mag for doing this. And thanks Ian for highlighting this topic, I'm sure you got some trolls in your comment moderation queue! This is a important topic that will not go away simply because trolls and incels cannot handle things changing for the better. Hopefully at some point GW will wake up to this and offer some official models, even if it is just additional options on a character or squad sprue, it has to start somewhere.
yes must be incels if they dont wont the existing lore up ended to suit the sensibility's of a minority of the player base... because we have seen how well IPs have turned out once they are hijacked by those on an ideological crusade
Here's my vote for you making that Little Sisters of Purfication army. My inner Space Marine chapter lore nerd (who is compelety fine with, if not a little intreagued by, the idea of female marines) is 95% sure the chapter shown in the 3rd place entry is homebrew. To me it looks a little influenced by Mass Effect tbh. Also, Storm Lords' armour is half white/half red, Marauders are yellow, and Rampagers are red (interesting tid-bit is that all three are White Scars successors). The 2nd entry really does convey a sense of coming from it's own culture, rather than being a bland 'cookie-cutter' marine. The 1st place one is so evocative of John Blanch's work and some of the 2nd & 3rd editon art work. Very cool.
Realistically, even if they were female, in full powered armor, how would you tell? The idea of 'boob armor' is utterly impractical, and there are plenty of videos explaining why. In full powered armor, she'd look pretty much like any other marine.
I can't believe no one mentioned the "light" behind the 1st place winner resembles a halo from classic Catholic art, adding a religious tone to the piece!
Woohoo Alexander! And where was the Earl Grey bashing? I feel cheated! ;) Another amazing challenge, congratulations to the winners; very much deserved. There was an abundance of wonderful pieces in the community every time I checked my Instagram feed during the lead-up. If my health had been better at the time, I would have loved to have taken part too. And I think you should go for it Ian, either a little mini force that can easily be used to bolster/ally with another army, or go full narrative and make a kill-team of individual characters! Thank you for another awesome and entertaining video, take care :)
That skull is one of the spiders mentioned in the original Necromunda fluff. The spiders eyes are used as focusing crystals in las guns. The bigger the spider the better the weapons, small means pistols and a small one is what she had on her back. In the original Necromunda on the lowest level is a spider that is that big with that many eyes it can make a full 2 gangs las canons and still have eyes left over...gangs keep trying to kill it, but it always wins. Think the spider from LoTR but on space marine steroids. They have them in farms for the IG weapons so all in controlled places for military uses, where once big enough for the needs can be put down but gangers don't have access to these farms so have to hunt the spiders. Left it open for a gang VS spider event to get some epic loot but alas they never followed it up, was kinda hoping it would appear in the necromunda vid game if they made it a MMO territory thing but alas no such luck, the big boss at the lowest level is only way to get the crystal for a las canon but 1st gen Necromunda was when las canons were an "I win" button.
I love the second place winner. A real Escher vibe. Already in my head cannon I can imagine a female chapter drawing only frim Escher jives. Nice. Great stuff all round.
This is what the hobby is all about. Kitbashing and home brew. Although I’m not in favour of official female space marines (for the same reason I wouldn’t want male sisters of battle), I love checking out people’s custom miniatures.
im of the same opinion and i find both extremes disturbing.. those who demand lore only minis on the table top and those who demand a change to the lore to fit their sensibilities how ever its those that demand a lore change that have the potential to really up end the IP as we have seen in so many other titles and table top games such as D&D
I've been working on a weird Cawl/Primaris Marine story where he interjects a born female/raised male Space Marine into a Imperial Fist regiment. I've been slowly working on her mini. I wanna make her head the same scale as primaris, but it seems 3D printing will be my best route.
I don't play space marines, but i like the art and idea presented here. I really want to see more Female Characters that fight for the chaos gods, as I don't think the Chaos Gods care if a champion is male or female, so long as they claim victories and sacrifices for the Dark God's favor.
I'm several months late to this video but watched it and your previous video and loved them. I'm very new to the hobby and was delighted to learn that there was a space viking faction and my immediate thought was "I'm turning those Bladeguard Veteran dudes I got into Shield Maidens". I was quite disappointed to learn that this, technically, wasnt a thing in the lore. "Oh you cant do that because male tissue types yaddyadda" whatever. We have the scientific power *today* to more-or-less make that a non-issue, you're never going to convince me that 40 thousand years into the future they cant figure out female space marines. Anyway, I built and modeled my shield maidens for Kill Team anyway and wrote a whole lore for three of them as sisters and blahblah I wont bore you. I'm even starting up a Space Wolves army with them as the command. I just did a simple headswap with some Stormcast Eternals heads and called it good. My final product isnt as detailed as the above winners, but I'm proud of them. Very happy to learn that Im not alone in feeling like its silly nonsense that there arent female space marines. Keep up the great videos! I'm learning a lot from all of them and loving your take on the universe!
no ones bothered about what you do with your models but demanding lore changes to fit your world view is asinine... i love what people do with their own models and the lore they create around it but trying to force some thing in to canon because you think its silly as is.. is a you problem.. my question is why? why do there need to be female space marines?
Ian - thank you for bringing this amazing magazine and their challenges to my attention. And an honourable mention to your plaid shades-background gradient-lighting coordination.
I paused the video and read some of those comments, and I have to say...its MISTERS OF BATTLE, you scruffy neck beards! I enjoy conversations like Female Space Marines, just hate how quickly the salt comes out.
What's wrong with Brothers of Battle. The acronym would then be Bob. 😂 I would love to see how male Sororitas (or Fraternitas if you like) would look. 😁
Really enjoying your stuff Ian. Great mix of lore, gaming history and general hobby topics. You and midwinter minies have inspired me to get back into the hobby. I've been watching for a while but just finished my first (in about 20 years) squad of assault intersessors. I'd love a video on tips and ways to connect with local hobbyists and gaming clubs by the way.
@@brynstarre don't know enough about Andre's condition to talk about that his case. Growing skulls bigger is a harder and more complicated process than other bones which is why kids and babies have over sized heads. Makes sense that similar would follow for making marines. But sense and 40k don't really go together.
Very cool! 2nd place was my favorite though I can definitely see why first place got that place. It was mentioned in the video but it really emphasizes the effects on the body of the gene seed implantation, that no matter your original body you will become a massive roided out looking soldier With third place, this one really gave me Halo Reach Spartan vibes, might be because of the additional color accents on the different pieces of armour as well as the armour looking leaner compared to armour on the other two
I don't understand why people say 40k does not make sense. It is internally coherent. Most of it does makes sense in universe, but nearly everyone is an unreliable narrator so you have to piece it together, which I find makes it more like real life and real history. The way the gods are born in the warp from the mind and emotions of sentient being and how they interact with "real space" is a feasible model for how Gods function in real life. The main thing that doesn't make sense to me is how space marines fit so many bullets in to those tiny magazines on their Holy Bolters, especially when the bullets are so large.
I don't have a problem with FSPs homebrew and tabletop wise, they're toys and you bought them do as you wish. Lore wise I do, if they are just plopped out there like the primaris and say 'fem space muhreens innit', it would just be a massive retcon of established lore and I think it would take away from the SoBs who are far more badass than SMs IMO since they're baseline humans who can do the same thing just with zeal and sheer tenacity. What I could see is if they were introduced as part of the SoBs a Primaris Sister if you will but of course not as many as the SMs and each time one Primaris Sister is made its a big thing since most of them would be named characters and the surgery would be fokken risky so the decision of transitioning to primaris sister would be as butt clenching and revered as fabricating a titan. Introducing 'Female Space Marines' in lore is possible but it has to be setup nicely and be a momentous thing since its going against the established lore, it something thought to be impossible in lore and such it should be written by good authors.
"it would just be a massive retcon of established lore" 'Cawl figured it out' would not retcon anything. "and I think it would take away from the SoBs" It would take nothing from the SoB, in the same way the other Imperium factions take nothing away from the guard.
I kinda like the 3rd place, but I feel it's ruined by the long rifle that makes it look human scale rather then space marine scale, I feel it would have a better feel with a more traditional bolter or even better a bolt pistol. Edit: I also feel like she's a bit too tall, a bit squished version would probably look more to scale anatomically. The second one is great, a little more caricaturish facial features but not so much to ruin it, love the blood stain on the aquila, that looks amazing First place, amazing sculpt, great idea, so much going on there, so much work on that, but I still somewhat prefer second place to it, sometimes less is more
All three showcased are awesome. I'd love minis in these sorts of styles and aesthetics to be more available. Edit: and a helmeted entry is kind of cool, Ian. Nice one 👍
something I kind of like about the rogue trader space marine minis is how they look a bit hunched over and malformed. Interesting to imagine them being a bit more monstrous looking
In my head canon the stock space marines are from both male and female stock. Reason being that the absolute extremes they are pushed through modifications makes such minor starting traits insignificant. The modern space marine in the official canon being as far removed in genetics and phenotype from present day un-modified males and females both that it doesn't seem reasonable to put it in those bins. Maybe it would require slightly more work to adjust a genetic female into a space marine but it seems like a minor difference and not worth discarding 50% of your potential harvest.
I'm borrowing this headcannon. Especially considering how far out of its way GW/Black Library goes to omit talking about space marine sexual organs and everything that follows from that, imagining the genetic alterations are so extreme so as to produce a "human" beyond concepts of biological sex makes more sense than "hurr durr space marines no girls allowed". The fact that aspirants are pre-pubescent i.e. before dramatic differences between biological males and females are expressed almost makes more sense if they were recruiting both boys and girls. Also, we have lost primarchs, one of them could have been "female". Slaanesh is literally both male and female. genetically altered space warriors to whom biological sex identifiers do not apply is not at all strange for the 40k universe.
Oh, absolutely. With the amount of surgical, hormonal, and indoctrinal modifications to the base human form necessary to create an Astartes, normal men and women have far more in common biologically with each other than they do with a Space Marine. It's not even close. One could argue that all Space Marines are trans. It's just that their gender is "Space Marine".
It's really hard to suspend your disbelief with genetics in 40k if you know anything about HRT and gender reassignment surgery. Like...there's shapeshifting assassins, cyborg tech priests, and super soldiers with artificial organs. But these same people never figured out how make people transition into another sex (not just gender)? Or create things like asexual reproduction? Yeah. I don't buy it. Space Marines are definitely trans lol
Space Marines are male. They still have sexual organs, emotions and desires are just repressed by hypnosis conditioning. The whole point of Space Marines is that they're Warrior Monks, that is literally their entire aesthetic. Monastic orders generally only recruit males. Sisters of battle already fulfil this role of "female space marine" better than any female space marine ever could. Why aren't you all arguing for male SoB? Oh right, because the aesthetic/tone wouldn't work. From a purely aesthetic and business reason, FSM are stupid. They don't look aesthetically good, they don't really serve any purpose since they would be essentially male in every way that matters and would negate SoB hurting the Battle Nun's brand/uniqueness.
I think it was Inquisitor Jaq Draco who stole a set of Thousand Sons power armour simple because the armour interfaces where psyker based after the mutations of ten thousand years. Always thought if I ever did female marines I would use an idea based around that concept.
Alright, well make sure that we get some male Sisters of Battle (Brothers of Battle?) to go with them if they do come around. Because the Sisters more or less exist to be lowkey lore friendly Space Marines anyways (both being orders of religious warriors in power armor, given extraordinary abilities from the Emperor). If say, one of the two legions we don't really know much about returns, and they had a geneseed that works with women, that'd be great, just make sure we get some Faith Boyz too.
@@NapGod the insane lengths the transformer writer Simon Furman would take to deny female transformers was cringe inducing. Like there talking alien robots man, you don’t need to do this.

more important then if you should have female spave marines if you want (you should and i have, kitbashing aos stormcast with greynight looks good even if done badly by me). But to the real issue in this video, What 40k candle is it you have going in the back, and is it giving good 40k vibes?
What do y'all recommend for female heads (from GW or others)? I saw that Stormcast Eternals (e.g. Sequitors) have some good sculpts, Battle Sisters seem a little uniform WRT haircuts. I didn't find interesting 3rd party models yet.
Necromunda House Escher ganger heads are GW and look great on other models. The second place winner looks like an Escher head, but I'm not 100% positive.
@@nekrataali I'd say that as well, since they are still the only models GW has made that ever look like women, but there is no way that hair is fitting inside a helmet.
I wish it weren't so controversial, but part of me really enjoys when I see anything about female SM online lol. Watching people mald in the comments about how it isn't scientifically possible or it's not lore accurate is a real treat sometimes. I think you handled the topic really well by just saying "they're toys and it's not a big deal". Just found your channel and I really enjoy your content! Especially the HH content.
Cool. Out of my female space marine army I think only two are currently without helmets and they have shaved heads and it isn't actually particularly obvious that they're not male. So I'm pretty much going down your path of reasoning that the differences between male and female space marines would be present, but fairly subtle. On the other hand I did buy Satyr Art Studio's recent line of "power armoured female adventurers" retro models so whenever I get round to painting them they'll look a lot more like the Rogue Trader not-actually-female-space-marines-honest-guv models, albeit hopefully a bit less wonky looking.
I dont think fenale spacemarines will be cannon and it will be a bad choice if they ever make them cannon But i believe in thr power to model ur minis any ways u wanna because they r your minis
Yeah. Some Chaos models (and concepts) can swing so far in the other direction that it makes up for the missing women. Having a 13 breasted daemon prince has got to count for at least a few women.
Nothing relating to the topic at hand, but that "Brilliant" at the start of the talk with Alexander makes me realize you visually remind me of Paul Whitehouse, Ian. :D Keep up the good work. :)

Wow! It’s always a treat to see artists go wild on a theme. The 2nd place winner really blew my mind. Love it all!
Thanks so much!
I thought his accent sounded very familiar! After just a bit of snooping I can confirm, this man is a fellow Swedish speaking Finn. Good, now I can keep watching the video.
😅
Im so happy after finding this video. Every art showed reflects the best of this hobby.
I’m personally against female space missions, but I’m curious why you want them.
Very cool.
I like how it played your theme song when you showed your submission.
Thanks for spotting that !
Woohoo Alexander! And where was the Earl Grey bashing? I feel cheated! ;)
Another amazing challenge, congratulations to the winners; very much deserved.
Sorry, I think it´s a skull from an Ur-Ghul (Drukhari). Like the 4 one in the Blackstone Box.
I’ve been meaning to check out 28 Mag. Good video.
I've been working on a weird Cawl/Primaris Marine story where he interjects a born female/raised male Space Marine into a Imperial Fist regiment. I've been slowly working on her mini. I wanna make her head the same scale as primaris, but it seems 3D printing will be my best route.
Man nothing like this kinda video to make me hate everything I've ever painted😭
I cunningly put my entry RIGHT AT THE END for similar reasons...
I don't play space marines, but i like the art and idea presented here. I really want to see more Female Characters that fight for the chaos gods, as I don't think the Chaos Gods care if a champion is male or female, so long as they claim victories and sacrifices for the Dark God's favor.
Very cool to revisit this after the official introduction of female custodes
@@awakeandwatching953 why does it matter to you it wouldn't change anything if they did add them
Ian - thank you for bringing this amazing magazine and their challenges to my attention.
Personally, I think the neck beards are useful for this. With their tears, we can lower the price of salt during the pandemic.
lol. Misters of Battle. That's probably the best one.
What's wrong with Brothers of Battle. The acronym would then be Bob. 😂
I would love to see how male Sororitas (or Fraternitas if you like) would look. 😁
I was like "Huh, Alexander has a very Finnish accent", and then "Oh" when he said he's a fin too!
Fantastic entries
Love the candles in the background haha
Tiny head on massive body should be a marine staple. Makes sense the skull cannot maintain proportion with the rest of the body.
It depends. Each Marine is basically Andre the Giant, and his head was somewhat proportional.
@@brynstarre don't know enough about Andre's condition to talk about that his case. Growing skulls bigger is a harder and more complicated process than other bones which is why kids and babies have over sized heads. Makes sense that similar would follow for making marines. But sense and 40k don't really go together.
Despite mostly being a lore guy I really enjoyed this. The composition and craftsmanship on the winning entry blew my mind
Thank you!
It's an older Warhammer aesthetic sir, but it checks out 👍
This challenge was really difficult to judge, as we had over 150 entries!
Thanks for making this video and spreading the word :)
Facing down an old out of date patriarch. Hilarious, really loved that once I clocked the joke! Well done to all those who entered.
I liked it too 🤣
Was waiting for this!
Oh my god the *patriarch* you are a funny bastard. Well played
All excellent entries, the winning piece is amazing.
It's really nice, isn't it? So much STUFF on one base.
@@ArbitorIan absolutely jammed it all in there 😂
Thanks for sharing info about 28 Mag. It's really cool.
Congratulations to all the winners and so great to see Laurence getting the win 🥇🤘🤘🤘
Thanks man!
12:18 her face reminds me of Senua or Furiosa, which is awesome!
Very cool! 2nd place was my favorite though I can definitely see why first place got that place.
It was mentioned in the video but it really emphasizes the effects on the body of the gene seed implantation, that no matter your original body you will become a massive roided out looking soldier
With third place, this one really gave me Halo Reach Spartan vibes, might be because of the additional color accents on the different pieces of armour as well as the armour looking leaner compared to armour on the other two
the next time i see one of your miniatures with it's gun barrel not drilled ... i riot 😜😂
I like that with the 2nd place model, you get the impression that if the character had the helmet on you wouldn't know that it was a woman.
That's kinda what I was going for. With their helmets on, they're just anonymous warriors of death.
@@oneinchheroes congrats on making such a great entry!!!
@@Nukefandango thanks so much!
This is fucking awesome!
Very neat entries.
Fantastic. Just my cup of tea.Downloading the 28 Mag stuff now!
More stuff like this please!
So Incredible!! Well done to all involved
The Patriach in your diorama is a really fun touch.
@@Crispr_CAS9 I disagree, I have no energy to put into an online debate, so let us agree to disagree fellow 40k fan.
Well see there's you're problem you didn't drill out the barrel! XD jk
Great video, great interview, keep it up!
Great video Ian the entries were amazing. Also I thought your piece was really cool as well😁👍🏻
How awesome that you got the present the winners! 🎉
The second one is great, a little more caricaturish facial features but not so much to ruin it, love the blood stain on the aquila, that looks amazing
First place, amazing sculpt, great idea, so much going on there, so much work on that, but I still somewhat prefer second place to it, sometimes less is more
5 mags in and this is a wargamers dream
The model on the left of the first place one is the biophagus model body
All three showcased are awesome. I'd love minis in these sorts of styles and aesthetics to be more available.
Edit: and a helmeted entry is kind of cool, Ian. Nice one 👍
Another fantastic video bringing a thoughtful and interesting angle to the hobby. Keep up the good work!
Great pieces of art there! While the diorama was great, I liked 2nd place best.
something I kind of like about the rogue trader space marine minis is how they look a bit hunched over and malformed. Interesting to imagine them being a bit more monstrous looking
Wonderful video like always.
Yeah, that was essentially Ian's argument in the first video.
They Scottish tartan vibe on 2nd place entry is really cool…
I love the 28mag community and magazine. They have a discord now. It was an honour to have been featured in their pages.
Was that an Urr Ghoul skull?
Yes, yes, it was! 👍
Great work. Thanks for sharing this.
The female space marine panic has all the shades the dumb “no female transformers” rule mandates by the marvel comics back in the 80’s.
and the same with the male Sororitas stampede.
@@Rosencrantz17 Or, you know, we could just let the two factions exist like they do?
oof you're right. that general 80s comic movement centered on "grittiness" where a misogynist and xenophobe like Frank Miller could reign supreme.
@@NapGod the insane lengths the transformer writer Simon Furman would take to deny female transformers was cringe inducing.
Like there talking alien robots man, you don’t need to do this.
excellent, glad to be introduced to another non-problematic corner of the hobby
I'm amazed we've only had one chud response so far.. they must have alerts set up to dogwhistle them to stuff like this.
Pre-emptive like for the vid, as Ian's stuff is always excellent.
Oh, I make full use of the RUclips word filters!
Art should be in all parts of life, and art will always have controversy. A great discussion and very interesting for me who isn't a party of the hobby.
Oh man I could season all my food for a year with the salt in those comments from last time.
Cry some more, your tears are delicious.
The models are beautiful. It makes me feel like my black templars are pretty ham-fisted, but also gives you something to pull from/work towards if you follow.
Hmmm... I'm pretty sure about Poly Styrene and Wendy O. Williams, but not the last one... Siouxie Sioux?
more important then if you should have female spave marines if you want (you should and i have, kitbashing aos stormcast with greynight looks good even if done badly by me). But to the real issue in this video, What 40k candle is it you have going in the back, and is it giving good 40k vibes?
Is the space marine one. It seemed the most appropriate. And yes, my need room smelled like trees for hours afterwards!
@@ArbitorIan many a nerd bunker will have the smell of fresh pine in the future rather then beer and super glue perhaps :)
What do y'all recommend for female heads (from GW or others)? I saw that Stormcast Eternals (e.g. Sequitors) have some good sculpts, Battle Sisters seem a little uniform WRT haircuts. I didn't find interesting 3rd party models yet.
Statuesque Miniatures' Techno Roiders heads are absolutely perfect.
@@-Longinus- Thanks, these are great indeed!
Awesome!!!
This is great, I love everything from it.
Yours was my favurate for so many reasons. Beautiful
Definitely the wittiest.
I dont think fenale spacemarines will be cannon and it will be a bad choice if they ever make them cannon
But i believe in thr power to model ur minis any ways u wanna because they r your minis
Your entry would have been perfect with a beacky helmet
The winner is proper 40k, could have appeared in white dwarf back in the 80's. Blanch would love it
No female chaos space marines? Honestly really disappointed. Never met a chaos player who wasn't ok with FSMs
Keep up the good work. :)
Hey, just wondering isn't Malice already the 5th god or just a wild card like aeldari gods?
Its complicated due to a rights issue. Malice, as far as we know if they are even a holdover of Malal, is just a warp entity venerated by a single warband.
