every time i go thru my Tool phase, which is about 3 times a year, this dude always provides great lessons and demos of what Jones is playing. great job.
This video deserves a 'love' button. Your tone sounds like perfection coming through my speakers. The Grudge is a perfect example of subtle thematic variations provided by all band members(but mainly Adam), the song also has great dynamics as well! That bridge section around 14:40 in the video always gave me trouble as a drummer. You did an excellent job breaking down the song and I loved how you built on the chords during the outro section. Only you could take a Tool song and make it better!!!!
You are an amazing guitarist and a wonderful teacher! Can you please make a lesson on Wings For Marie and 10000 Days ??? Really appreciate your work :D
Man learning these Tool songs on acoustic guitar is killing my fingers.. Thank you for the videos though, I never learned any Tool songs because they sound complicated but they are actually pretty simple.. And the pace you teach at is perfect for me.. Thank you so much man!!
Actually, the "12th fret slide" sixalarm is mentioning, really isn't guitar. You are correct in saying it's not Justin either. It's Danny Carey. Again, the only reason I'm mentioning this stuff is because I've seen this song played live a few times. I can guarantee it's not Jones or Chancellor. However, the slide is a nice touch and fits nicely.
Thanks! That's a really tough call. Aenema holds a special place in my heart. It's like Master of Puppets. Albums that forever changed my musical path.
Wonderful Tone. One of my favorite songs from Tool. GF at the time would argue endlessly about this album being inferior to Ænema. I told her to clutch it like a cornerstone. =)
Unfortunately, I do not really play my guitar much anymore. But I love tool, and watching these videos are just so interesting, regardless if you play or not.
Behind the nut of the guitar the strings resonate, especially when your "chugging" or play a lot of start/stop riffs. You can also slide it up the fretboard for extra clean tapping/soloing.
Everyone plays things differently live. So just because Jones doesn't do it in any "live performance". That's what I hear on the album version and when I jam on it live it works well. It can't be Justin because he's playing and completely different part with tons of delay way up on the neck. I hear what you saying though. You don't have to play, I like too.
i totally was about to do some hw but i opened youtube and this was the first video in my feed. the grudge is one of my favorites!! "let go, let go, let go!" \m/ thanks for the uploads man
Hey man, been an admirer of your vids for sometime. This one by far has been the most helpful for me, especially for some of the subtleties within the song, thanks! Oh and I see you get lots of requests, but I think it should be Rosetta you do next! Peace.
Yes, that's one of the uses. Kills any excess noise, which believe it or not is more than you thing. Really helps clean up the sound that kills us fellow audiophiles.
As always, love your stuff! My mate and I (guitar + bass) want to play some Tool songs but we can't find a drummer anywhere as good as Danny! Such a bummer! Anyway, keep up the brilliant work.
Thanks, this helps a lot actually...as usual, Tool's songs seems easy to play, but there are so many small details that really makes the song unique...Adam Jones, what a tricky guitarist :D
Hey Greg, It may have been requested and I know it's a LONG one, but it would be so awesome if you did Rosetta Stoned! It's my favorite Tool track! Sound doable? :)
man thank you so much for the videos. Because of you I learned some tricky parts in Jambi and Vicarious. I can learn by ear but some parts are really hard =D
If you could find it within yourself to do a tutorial on Right In Two, the one song that rates with Lateralus IMHO, I would greatly appreciate it. Keep up the great work, job well done sir.
Actually it's not 12g 13b. It is a pulloff from 14g15b to an open g and b. There are no fretted notes at the end of this riff. I agree however that it is not repeating 14g15b. The only reason I'm mentioning the above is because I've seen Jones do this live and close up, twice at that.
Great job, Greg!! Everything's spot on for me and I really love the lesson and appreciate your work, but i got one question. I tried playing that big open D part at the begging of the song and after sliding an octave higher just finished with open strings before the bass does its thing and it sounded kinda good. so the question is - is it just my crippled ear?
Dude thats crazy I've been playing part 12:45 in the video with 3 on the a and then 5 on the low d then a pull off to open then hit 5 on the a it sounds a lot alike and the way he plays it but i learned this way on google lol so it could be wrong but it works
just a question, what type of distortion do you use: a pedal or the distortion from the amp? if it is a pedal, can you tell me what kind it is? and if it is from the amp can you tell me how you turn the distortion on/off?
yes, I did, sorry english is not my first language, sometimes I can't understand 100%, and also I was focusing on how you play the song haha thanks man
every time i go thru my Tool phase, which is about 3 times a year, this dude always provides great lessons and demos of what Jones is playing. great job.
Stinkfist is a great track to start with. You get a taste of almost everything Jones' uses as writer. And it's relatively simple to play.
Thanks. Fortunately I've found someone local who absolutely crushes Carey's parts. It's a blast to jam.
When ever Danny and Justin want to jam I'm ready haha
i guess it is pretty off topic but does anyone know a good place to watch newly released movies online ?
@Fletcher Abdiel Lately I have been using FlixZone. Just search on google for it =)
@Malcolm Mathias Definitely, I have been watching on FlixZone for years myself :)
@Malcolm Mathias Thanks, I went there and it seems to work :) I appreciate it!
@Fletcher Abdiel Happy to help =)

is that a map of hyrule from the first Zelda in the corner?
You are an amazing guitarist and a wonderful teacher! Can you please make a lesson on Wings For Marie and 10000 Days ??? Really appreciate your work :D
drumminguitarist at least she liked tool

I am a drummer, I hardly ever pick up a guitar but I find your videos so interesting, thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent. :D
Thanks! That's a really tough call. Aenema holds a special place in my heart. It's like Master of Puppets. Albums that forever changed my musical path.
ur sound effects/quality are just briliant !
I appreciate all the info!! I've thought about the DVD thing. Maybe I'll make an all encompassing Jones tutorial DVD...
Wonderful Tone. One of my favorite songs from Tool. GF at the time would argue endlessly about this album being inferior to Ænema. I told her to clutch it like a cornerstone. =)
She's right. I think I mainly agree with that because Aenima just has a better mix/production to me.
Uhm I could never understand how someone would not see lateralus as a more superior album to their past ones. The writing is out of this world
Can you pls teach us wings for Mary part one and two
I appreciate the input. I'll try doing that myself to see if it works and/or if I like it. Thanks for the input!
Unfortunately, I do not really play my guitar much anymore. But I love tool, and watching these videos are just so interesting, regardless if you play or not.
awesome man. can play this now thanks to you.
ur such an awesome teacher and guitar player
Behind the nut of the guitar the strings resonate, especially when your "chugging" or play a lot of start/stop riffs. You can also slide it up the fretboard for extra clean tapping/soloing.
You can say that again. Keep the Tool school coming.....I wouldn't want to learn from anyone else.
thank you my friend, this song is so incredible, tools best album opener imo, excellent tutorial as always!
It's a fret wrap from Gruv Gear. Works great. You could use a lot of things.
great vids man. Love your attention to detail. Very professional.
For some reason when I do the big D chord, 00023x, my B string sounds grossly high pitched compared to the rest of the sound. Any idea to change that?

Thank you as always! Glad you dig the tone. It really came together for this track. I was pleased. Thanks again!
Did you miss the part where I say I'm using the line 6 hd pro? Or am I misunderstanding your question?
That was a great lesson. I found playing the song way easier after your very good explanations.
I think you should do a whole video series on understanding time signatures and how to count note values and time sig changes. Just a suggestion.
Hey man, been an admirer of your vids for sometime. This one by far has been the most helpful for me, especially for some of the subtleties within the song, thanks! Oh and I see you get lots of requests, but I think it should be Rosetta you do next! Peace.
"can be a little grueling...because of the length...its 8 minutes"
fast forward 7 years and adding 7 minutes xD
been thinking about that myself, i tried 14g15b and then 0g0b but i think u got it spot on! good job!!
Hi quality lesson. To break down that song, that fast and that quality is impressive.
Great Job!
my favorite tool song
You are awesome, man! Collected and non-smug. Just pure talent! Man, you matched the SOUND perfectly! Thanks!!!
Yes, that's one of the uses. Kills any excess noise, which believe it or not is more than you thing. Really helps clean up the sound that kills us fellow audiophiles.
Wow been waiting for this since I first discovered your channel, thank you so much!!
Wish you were in Australia man. Great lesson as always
As always, love your stuff! My mate and I (guitar + bass) want to play some Tool songs but we can't find a drummer anywhere as good as Danny! Such a bummer! Anyway, keep up the brilliant work.
im so happy you did more tool videos thanks u so much. Maybe third eye soon?
treat for eyes and ears. thanks for this video. keep it up !
I just wanted to say that you're my hero.
This is so awesome ! Thanks man :p
Could you make a video reviewing all your set up (line6, computer&, pedals...) please ^^' ? I know I'm curious !
Your a cool dude! Very informative great attitude. Keep em comin! Thanx
Yes! Good eye. It's actually two maps. Top half is Zelda 2 and the bottom half is the original Zelda.
....one of my favorite tool songs! awesome rock star ending!
another great tutorial thanks from uruguay
Thanks, this helps a lot actually...as usual, Tool's songs seems easy to play, but there are so many small details that really makes the song unique...Adam Jones, what a tricky guitarist :D
Great work man!! Thank you so much!! :)
And very nice videos too, really helpfull and entertaining!!
Hey Greg, It may have been requested and I know it's a LONG one, but it would be so awesome if you did Rosetta Stoned! It's my favorite Tool track! Sound doable? :)
Hey Axe! Thanks for another awesome lesson. Just wanted to let you know not to worry about rushing. That's what rewind is for :D
Copyright issues. I'll be creating a play through page on my own site to post complete songs play throughs
man thank you so much for the videos. Because of you I learned some tricky parts in Jambi and Vicarious. I can learn by ear but some parts are really hard =D
Definitely do it by feel and ear. Once you get the chord changes in place the rest of the (strumming) rhythm will come.
If you could find it within yourself to do a tutorial on Right In Two, the one song that rates with Lateralus IMHO, I would greatly appreciate it. Keep up the great work, job well done sir.
I actually have several lessons about time signatures uploaded. 7/8, 3/4, 6/4, 5/8.
So glad i found your lesson! :')
And now it's time to learn :D
Actually it's not 12g 13b. It is a pulloff from 14g15b to an open g and b. There are no fretted notes at the end of this riff. I agree however that it is not repeating 14g15b. The only reason I'm mentioning the above is because I've seen Jones do this live and close up, twice at that.
Great teaching, dude!
excellent!
Very awsome, thank you man.
Great lesson although palm mutes are poor though due to the high gain. Adam uses high gain at mid range to get that percussive feel with crisp mutes.
Holy shit! That tone!
When will then be now? Soon!
EPIC tone! Great video!
Muchas Gracias! Eternamente agradecido. saludos
Great job, Greg!! Everything's spot on for me and I really love the lesson and appreciate your work, but i got one question. I tried playing that big open D part at the begging of the song and after sliding an octave higher just finished with open strings before the bass does its thing and it sounded kinda good. so the question is - is it just my crippled ear?
this guy is awesome
GOD I love that sound right here 20:33 it sounds like a tiger growl scream type thing. You nailed it!
Da du da WHAAAHHHWWW.du du
Awesome as always!
Thank you so much !
You can order them through their site and they'll ship them to you. Send me a message and I'll put you in contact with the right people!
Dude thats crazy I've been playing part 12:45 in the video with 3 on the a and then 5 on the low d then a pull off to open then hit 5 on the a it sounds a lot alike and the way he plays it but i learned this way on google lol so it could be wrong but it works
First make sure your in tune. You might have to adjust your pickup height.
well done
How do your muted notes have so much sound? whenever I mute notes and play them, it has little sound to them
Try more volume
Yes!
Is that a PhD from the "School of Rock" on the wall? Thank you for the lesson Dr.
YOU'RE THE BEST!!!!!!!! Thank you to fulfil my request :)
Nice! You know your craft.
Would you mind sharing your line 6 patch/signal chain for this??
just a question, what type of distortion do you use: a pedal or the distortion from the amp?
if it is a pedal, can you tell me what kind it is?
and if it is from the amp can you tell me how you turn the distortion on/off?
Yes
Thanks!
thanks man!!!
Would you consider making some Karnivool covers? Even better, lessons?
Oh hey, is that the Zelda 1 map on your wall? If so, pretty cool!
Btw dude..
You can create your own DVDs, ever though of this?
I would buy one =) Just for those awesome sound guitar instrumentals.
I have a VOX AV30 amp how do I get that same sound? which pedals should I add ?
Where can I get one of those guitars in the states?
What is it actually good for? To make sure that the other strings don't make sounds even though you haven't played them??
You're a smooth-as-fuck teacher, son! Good tone too (fingers and gear)!
Subscribed, boii!
yes, I did, sorry english is not my first language, sometimes I can't understand 100%, and also I was focusing on how you play the song haha thanks man
Amazing, as ever man! :)
Does anyone know what the thing around his guitar nut is?
Full compilation (full track cover) and partial reproduction(this tutorial). Basically are the same.
Will u do pushit any time soon?
Most people use a scrunchy hairband, but a wooly sock tied round the neck can work alright
