Yeah I had to have kimber send me a new slide stop for free after I sent in a video showing my problem but I ended up throwing in a Wilson combat slide stop and problem solved for me I could see in the one kimber sent me out was polished where it was catching previously.

Kimber has around a 300-500 round break in period (sometimes could be way lower round count). I've called Kimber a number of times for customers and that's what I was told by them.

When I bought my kimber a year ago I had issues off the bat with the mags sticking and before I took it out to shoot it I bought 3 more magazines from kimber online and every single one showed up with the same stamp issue where the magazine followers all stuck. I pulled them apart and filed down the stamp issue and the gun has run flawlessly ever since

I have the same issue with my Kimber Custom 2 (.45). I fired just over 400 rounds so far, so maybe the 500-round break-in may still help, but having read multiple accounts of similar issues I am also becoming aware that I should continue to try changing my behavior until I've exhausted the possibilities of it being something on my end such as adjusting my grip to be tighter, lubricating the pistol a little more than usual, cleaning and lubing more often because this model is supposed to have tighter tolerances than some other pistols, etc . . . It is tempting for me to say it's the pistol because I've fired thousands of rounds from my Glock 19 Gen 3 with zero malfunctions, but then these are two very different animals, so I'm going to hold out for the Kimber and see where it gets me. In the meantime, I am seriously thinking of just getting another Glock so I have a reliable 2nd weapon. Oh, one more thing. My Kimber Custom 2 also had one other little problem that I found to be extra disappointing - after 400 rounds, the rear sight broke off without any other usage than normal firing. I've since replaced the sights with night sights, but it still bothers me that a metal that is supposed to withstand the shock and impact of thousands of rounds fired, breaks after only 400.

Been a 1911 guys for over 20 years... I have seen this happen before.... Slide stop interna knob (the one that gets engaged with the magazine follower) might be a little to thick or proud and caches the upcoming brass.... We used to polish them with Flitz and some times a very mild filling will remove the excess material....

I have the same gun I bought this past November and I had initial issues with it hanging up, not chambering rounds. I shot through it, cleaned it over and over. What clicked for me was another RUclips video showing a guy who had issues with 10 round mags for some reason. So I bought 3 more Wilson Combat mags and kept those back just for the kimber. I’m not sure if it just hit its break in or it was the mags, but with the new Wilson mags it runs without hiccup.
I’m not saying that it will fix yours because we had different issues, but don’t give up on it! If it doesn’t straighten out in the next 100 rounds or so I’d just send it back. You invested a good chunk of money and deserve a solid gun. Great videos though, I subbed!

Your problem is not the magazines or lack of cleaning, but the slide stop. The slide stop catches the round coming up from the magazine, trying to enter the chamber. That causes slide look back before the magazine is empty. The problem is easy to fix if you know what to do. I could explain it for you here, but you can also find good information on how to do this on internet. Try the internet, there you will also find drawings to help you understand. You can also buy a new slide stop and try to solve the problem that way, but if the new slide stop isn't better than the old one, the problem will still be there.

Did your opinion work, I just purchased my S/A mill spec. Put 50 rds no problem, then field stripped it. Cleaned it and gave it a good oil, like you said these 🔥 Arms are made with tight tolerance. I worked the slide every day just racking it, about 150 times A day. Very big difference. Springfield Armory talks about a break-in period. This 🔥 arm loves oil, after a day of shooting 500 rds.
Field strip, Clean & oiled. Look for oil just for 1911, some have the tiny Needle like dispenser get in that tight area of the gun.
Good luck to you, in time you will be fine. This is not polymer

If at this point, after using different magazines and ammo and it still does it, you need to take a hard look at your slide lock. Lock the slide back and insert a loaded magazine and see if the bullet is touching the slide lock anywhere. I’ve found a few over the years and with a bit of file work you can take off the offending protrusion. If not, a new slide lock might be in order.

  • @samwalker7821

What you're experiencing is slide stop bounce. As the rounds feed upwards they jump up plus recoil causes the stop to bounce up and engage the slide. I've had this problem with my Kimber and a few other 1911's, and found that a small dimple of the surface of the stop where it contacts the spring loaded plunger to hold it in place worked well. Only a slight dimple is necessary but the location must be right. You could also try a heavier plunger spring and a different plunger first. I had that problem with some of my Kimbers and they never moved up prematurely since that mod. A good 1911 gunsmithing book should explain the procedure. It's one of the secrets the pro's use on competition guns.

It’s definitely not a gun issue. I watched your snippet at the range it ran fine for 5 shots till you adjusted your grip. When you did your left thumb was imparting enough upward pressure on the slide stop that on the 6 round it locked back. It shows that with the 1911 that you may need a bit more range time with it as your not completely used to the grip angle yet and if your coming from a 9mm the recoil is also screwing you up

  • @jaydee5156
    @jaydee5156 Год назад +2

Due to it's relatively low velocity, I honestly find .45 to be a very comfortable round to shoot. In this instance, I consider compensators to be more decorative than anything else. Personally, I like standard thickness 1911 grips, but there are some really nice slim profile grips out there. Now, for the grip safety. I prefer grips safeties with a memory hump on my 1911s. With the exception of mil-spec models, just about every manufacturer puts them on their 1911s. Kimber does sell certain models with, but most are without. Kimber has a grip safety with a "Tactical bump" and it's available from their online store, along with backstraps with extended magwells and an assortment of grips, accessories and parts.

Have someone who knows what they’re looking for check the slide stop lobe. That’s the part than engages the follower to hold the slide open on an empty mag. If too much material is there it can contact the tip of the bullet and as the round comes up in the magazine it pushes the slide stop up. It’s actually pretty common on production 1911’s. Also, you should not have to clean your 1911 every 100 rounds like the Kimber rep said. I have Les Baers which are fit much tighter than the Kimber and they will run 1k plus rounds before they need cleaning. You should send it back and let them look at the slide stop. Keep up the good work.

FYI changing to slim grips requires a change in the grip screw bushings. Its kind of a touchy job because of the very fine threads and thin frame walls. Very easy to cross thread. If you can, try and pick up a gun with that profile to see if it't worth it. If grip is an issue, maybe try an arched mainspring houseing and see how that fits. Amazing how that helped my grip. 👍 I agree the slide stop pin is likely an issue, and have put the 10-8 performance one on some guns. Be aware this is not a drop in part and needs to be fitted.... Good luck!

I doubt you wouldn’t have done this yet, but I’d inspect the tilting mechanism since you ruled out magazines. I would try racking it a lot and really fast with no mag inside to see if you can replicate the issue. If that doesn’t expose the issue, try a magazine with snap caps and racking hard and fast there too. I’d also see about buying a different slide stop just in case there’s some strange issue with how it engages the magazines. Outside of that, I can’t say.
I thought the same about the short slide stop but honestly, it gets in the way with my hands when using a two handed grip. It’s up to you, but I’m not the biggest fan of extended slide stops. I hope this issue goes away soon and you’re able to remedy it. Overall, I’d just say stay away from kimbers..

Or try riding the slide stop to see if that holds it down. If it's still doing it with the weight of your thumb on it, then it's probably the ammo itself is pushing the slide stop up. In which case it'll need to be filed down or replaced entirely. Is there any copper on the slide stop?

I recently picked up a Kimber .45 ACP full size lightweight. Had some issues with FTF and a stripped grip screw bushing. They sent me a label through email to take and have printed out to take to the UPS at no expense to me. I sent the firearm out on a Monday and had it back the following Monday at my front door. No charge to me for anything.

This is all armchair book learning stuff since I'm not even American but Kimber has has a reputation for some spotty quality control for a while. The thing about 1911s, and why they're so expensive, is that they predate modern machining techniques and require a lot of hand fitting. Even moreso with guns that are going for "match" accuracy and thus have tolerances much more exacting than old GI grade guns.
Which brings us to the slide stop. My understanding is that any replacement stop you buy is machined intentionally oversized, and then needs to be fitted for your specific pistol. So it might be worth trying to find a qualified gunsmith first, to identify if that is indeed the issue before you go throwing any more money into this.

I have the "Stainless Target II". Basically the same exact pistol but with "target" sights. I picked mine up used so cannot speak to how long the break in period was or if it needed any tweaks to get dialed in. Mine appeared to have been barely fired much but I just cannot know. Odds are it is something simple that is difficult to diagnose. 1911's are known for needing fine tuning of the extractor tension. I may have missed it but have defined if you are having failure to feed or failure to eject issues? If failure to feed, where is the round stopping? Is it hanging on the breach face, on the extractor? You need to do some detective work. I think if mags were an issue, it would be obvious. The round should sit perfectly parallel to the feed lips. I had a wonky mag from Kimber and they replaced it no questions and told me to toss the bad one in the trash. I only own Kimber stainless mags and prefer the Kim-Pro Tac Mags in 8 round. They can fit flush or they come with two different height bumpers that attach to the bottom. The Tac Mags can also be disassembled and cleaned where standard mags cannot. I have heard bad things about 10 round mags the idea is the spring tension when fully loaded is pretty extreme by 1911 standards and can cause issues. I have messed with all kinds of slide springs and custom hand loads when I was shooting NRA bullseye matches. I have yet to have as many issues as you have had. I also have 100's of rounds of UMC through it with the factory spring. After installing a shock buffer on the guide rod, the slide did not lock back for a few hundred rounds till that was broken in a bit. But no FTE or FTF events. Also my favorite grips by far are Hogue rubber wrap around. But if you are already thinking that you want a narrower grip they may not be for you. I just know that when I hold a Glock, the grip feels way too narrow for me.

    • @jormond68
      @jormond68 Год назад +1

@@ballisticturd I finally got around to looking at my Kimber. Yeah a round could definitely bump that slide stop up if something it out of whack. If you want me to measure my slide stop I can. It might not be an issue with the slide stop. there may be something else causing a round to get too close it either when extracting or when loading out of the magazine. It might be worth sending back to Kimber to avoid chasing your tail. Modifying anything yourself might make it difficult for Kimber to solve the issue.

8:10 Pretty sure the Kimber grip safety is unique and not interchangeable with other 1911 grip safeties. (Kimbers usually have a unique firing pin block that's disengaged by the grip safety)
And remember not to hold the grip safety while disassembling or you can shear the pin that disengages the firing pin block, or so I've heard.

My experience with Kimber customer service has never been less than excellent and usually has been WAY above my expectations.
From seeing this video, it sounds like you e had less than 500 rounds through this firearm. According to Kimber, because of the VERY tight tolerances you should fire a minimum of 2,500-5,000 rounds just as a break in.
I’ve owned a ton of 1911s over the 30+ years of carrying a pistol & I absolutely love my Kimber SS Pro II in 9mm.
I’ve used a variety of magazines and never had any issues with Kimber or any other well-know manufacturers.
My advice, buy several thousand rounds of the cheapest ball ammo and plan on shooting 2-3,000 rounds before even thinking of carrying for a defensive pistol.
If you still have any issues, I’ll give my address & pay for shipping if you want to give it a new home. 😉

Imagine spending 600+ dollars on a gun and you won’t send it in for $20 or I don’t know put 500 rounds into it for the break in period…
Every 1911 idiot is always so triggered “why doesn’t it come with 500 rounds then?!”
My first question is did you dry slide and load your firearm before ANY USE? Did you then lube your firearm before actual use?
WHAT GRAIN AND BRAND DID YOU USE?
115 grain Winchester I only use.
I did 200 rounds NOT ONE misfire. Did a full cleaning. Recently did another 200 rounds NOT ONE MISFIRE. Another full cleaning.

It's more comfortable to shoot with a slightly lighter grip. Also I have limp wristed this gun on purpose to see if my malfunctions get worse and they did not.
