  • This episode of History Hunters takes Jeff & Sarah to the Rosecrans National Cemetery where a number of notable military burials have occurred over the past century. Thanks William. While there is a segment of our country who hates its traditions and military and police, I believe the vast majority of Americans - the great silent majority - still honor our men and women in uniform and our war dead. At least I hope I am right.

We’re not doing our troops justice for their horrible health issues after service in the Middle East and housed next to fire pits filled with human waste, jet fuel, tire and every other type of trash. The VA refuses to recognize their cancers and other illnesses. Some 700K are being allowed to suffer and die.

@@ronlheureux7623 This is exactly how I lost my dad. He developed epilepsy as well as a plethora of other diseases, which also led to a brain hemorrhage. He had to take a forced medical retirement and he went downhill from there. I lost him 3 years ago, on September 28 of 2018. You are absolutely correct that the VA did barely anything for him beyond the treatment of a few of his conditions as they officially did not recognize the burn pits as a cause of the issues. My understanding is that they are just now starting to acknowledge and recognize the issues that vets are suffering from due to the chemicals and other hazardous/biological materials that were burned in those pits. Too little too late in my opinion. Not to mention, we have truly no legal recourse or ability to take legal action as most of the pits were operated by Halliburton and other contractors who have immunity to lawsuits as granted by the military and government because it happened during a war and/or in a war zone.

What a wonderful timely episode, Jeff and Sarah! Our national pride, our military and our freedoms are under attack right now. We must remember we are the greatest symbol of freedom on earth and we must remember the men and women who died to give us these rights. As usual, the amount of details and backstories are amazing, Jeff. You are an amazing historian.

Good afternoon Jeff. This video was interesting but also, bittersweet. One of my closest friends in high school was layed to rest there in December of 1965. Robert R. Bohler was KIA in Vietnam on 10 December 1965, he was only 19 years old. After watching this video, I Googled Bob's name and two pictures of him came right up. I don't mind telling you, memories came flooding to the forefront. I couldn't see for a bit, my wife must have been chopping onions in the kitchen.
Ft. Rosecrans is situated on a very beautiful site.
Thanks again for sharing this video with us.

Thanks Jeff and Sarah for this video honoring those final resting places of our military at Point Loma. It is one of the most beautiful places in California, if not the world. I became familiar with it while attending Point Loma Nazarene College (now University) as a music student back in 1973-75. Also next to the cemetery is the Naval Electronics Lab on the point. If you were there long enough, you might had seen dolphins and/or whales off the point. I can imagine that would have made Sarah very happy. You always make my Sunday mornings that more enjoyable……..Russell D.

My aunt and uncle are buried there! Right down by the water, I was standing at the grave and something told me to turn around and a bright light pierced the sky, shooting down to the water and I knew it was the ancestors saying hello!! I can send you the pics, it is truly remarkable.
So glad to see you in San Diego!
What a cool piece with Schirra...you honored his memory and that's how we stay eternal. The uncle buried there came through in a psychic reading by a medium on stage...he said my uncle thanked me for keeping his memory alive. It's too woo woo for your channel but it's clearly evident to me they communicate.

There is a definite meaning behind coins left on a grave marker: a penny is left to signify that you paid your respects; a nickel means you went though basic training with the deceased; a dime signifies that you served with the deceased; a quarter, the most important, means you were with the individual when he died.

Thank you, Jeff for the tour of Fort Rosecrans. Such a beautiful place to have a national cemetery. The Pacific Ocean on one side and the San Diego bay on the other. I had no idea that Joseph Pendleton was buried at that cemetery. As I was watching you focus on the grave my eyes were on the wall behind. The reason being is that my father-in-law and mother-in-law are interned in the wall. My father-in-law’s father (WWI vet) is buried there, too, but in ground. I hope to see more episodes of the San Diego area.

My biological father (I was adopted by another Air Force Vet) died in traffic incident and was buried in Fort Rosecrans two years after I was born. I got to visit his burial site for the first time several years ago, and it overlooks a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean. Every time I visit and stay at the Naval Lodge on North Island Naval Base (I'm also an Air Force Vet) I look up and see where he lays in rest.

Any trip to San Diego should start with a trip out to the Cabrillo National Monument for some of the most spectacular views of the city, bay and ocean. Then on the return trip a respectful stop at Ft. Rosecrans Cemetery will be awe inspiring with its history and beauty. I was lucky to be stationed just a few miles away when I first came to San Diego in the Navy back in the early 70s. Thanks for showcasing this historic, and sacred part of San Diego. Wish you had time to visit another moving tribute to those who served at Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial just a few mile away.

It's one of my favorite cemeteries. It's so beautiful. I've visited hundreds of graves there, but only two that you did. Nice to see the others. Especially Pendleton. I never thought of how that camp came to be names. Another nice one, Jeff!

Beautifully done! It's interesting to hear about old military stories.
Makes you wonder what they'd think about what's going on now. Especially after sacrificing their lives.

Beautiful place. My dad and baby sister are there. ❣️ So interesting to hear you mention MCRD, Camp Pendleton, Balboa Park, Cabrillo Lighthouse: all significant spots to my family. Fascinating to hear the stories of those buried in Ft. Rosecrans. I had no idea. . .Yes, it’s absolutely stunning there.
