Stage Coach Driver Mike Tovey was Ambushed Here in 1893

- Jeff & Sarah revisit the legendary Michael "Mike" Tovey who guarded Wells Fargo and other stages in the Old West. Tovey was shot numerous times while guarding strongboxes against bad men and met his fate on the road between Ione and Jackson, California in 1893.
They will also visit the grave of the legendary expressman.

Jeff, one of my favorite interest of California history is the stage coach robberies. One of the things I have found is that Wells Fargo did not send a "Shotgun" or messenger as you mentioned in this video, with the stage unless it carried valuable gold or other monies. Many experienced bandits learn this and would let a stage pass if it had no shotgun up top. Many want-a-be's coming up empty handed on the cash would get the US Mail sack, Bad mistake as then their robbery became a Federal Offense and much harsher penalty if caught.
I recommend to anyone interested in California stage robberies to get the book Shotguns and Stagecoaches, The Brave Men who Rode for Wells Fargo. It has dated entries of early California Stage robberies. I do not remember the author right now but it is available on Amazon in Kindle and hard/soft cover books.
This Video moves to the second place in your videos, second only to your video on Black Bart !
Thank you for your time, effort and expense in putting this video on here for us to enjoy. Bravo !
Great information that you shared! Thanks for your input! I am happy that you enjoyed our video on Michael Tovey. One book I saw mentioned his name as Toby but the author got it wrong.
@@jbenziggy The more detailed book is "Stagecoach Robberies in California" By Michael Wilson. Also on Amazon. I might have been thinking of this one instead when I originally posted my original comment. It is worth a read.
Wow Jeff, I can't believe how the locations you share are so intertwined with where I've lived my life. My sister lives in Ione and I've driven past that marker, but never stopped. Amazing how we drive over and past so much history that happened under our feet. If not for folks like you, who strive to keep our history known, most would never be aware of how we got here..Keep it up, love your work! Nice to see Sarah out and about with you, hope she is doing well.
Thanks very much Cindy! We hope our videos will keep the past alive! And yes Sarah is doing well! Thanks for thinking of her!
Stop watching tv and start reading books. “The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.”
― George Orwell
@@kurtpeterson315 I don't watch "TV", I watch only what I choose. I am no longer able to read as my eyes won't allow, so I listen. I LOVE BOOKS, but I also LOVE video and would be getting nothing now if it not for talented folks like Jeff and Sarah.
@@cindykdelk7604 God bless you. That is the next best thing! I love Jeff and Sarah's work also!
I recently read about Tovey in John Boessenecker’s recent book “Shotguns and Stagecoaches”. Now thanks to you guys we get to see the exact spots written about in the book. Places I drove by a million times and didn’t know it.
Good morning! My great uncles rode for Wells Fargo in Utah Territory.
Oh wow! Very nice! What was his name and when did he ride? Maybe he knew Mike Tovey!
That’s cool
@@jbenziggy Lol, thank you for asking since opening my mouth I had to go back and research it. Found out he ( Hans Jorgen Hansen) rode his black mare for the postal service after the last two men were killed during an Indian attack His 16 year old son Niels Peter also rode whenever he couldn't. They rode between Ephraim and Spring City Utah.
I am late to the party today. Amazingly, I suffered excruciating anxiety all morning but as soon as I played this video it went away. Thanks for another great adventure.
I’m glad the video gave you a sense of peace! Take care, friend!
Girls were required to wear dresses to class when I was in elementary school. When I entered Jr High in 1970, we were allowed to wear pants. Looking down the hall at my Jr High, was a sea of blue denim.
My town was a little behind yours then! Lol. I was in school at that time around 1973.
Passed by there many times. I lived in Ione for 4 years (2003-7). Did lots of shopping in Martell and Jackson. Good to see the old stomping grounds. I live in Arizona now.
husband speaking -What a wonderful way to enjoy my morning coffee and learn some history. I graduated high school in 1961 , You never
saw a girl in pants at school. I remember their " sack dress " fad, and the boys had their duck tail hair cuts, white bucks with their little bags
of white chalk and the half inch belts with double buckels.
Fascinating story !! Looking forward to seeing more of Jackson and learning its history. I've never been there but always wanted to visit. Thank you Jeff and Sarah ! ❤
Thanks for the trip to Jackson. We look forward for your Sunday videos.
Thanks!
That was well researched Jeff, thanks, love these kind of stories.
Thank you Royston!
Excellent. Always interesting learning about these forgotten heroes.
Nicely done as always. Jackson is one of those towns we drove through as a family heading to other places. I wish we would've spent some time there. When I was in high school, I used to go camping with my friends on property owned by one of my friends parents about 15 miles from there. It was a beautiful area and we had a great time. I really miss those days. Thanks for bringing back some great memories. :) And THANK YOU for all the hard work you put into each and every video - it's greatly appreciated!!
Well thanks Mike! We greatly appreciate you giving of your time watching our videos! We will have more videos on Jackson soon!
What a brave man. Great story here!
Great episode! Men like Mike Tovey had no hesitation when it came to pulling the trigger and killing another man. Robbers were after money and not necessarily killing people. It wasn’t a movie, it was real life. You would be hung at the nearest tree. … The cemetery is very cool. I know what you mean Jeff , when you are in an old cemetery it like stepping into the past. So much work and skill went into the head stones. Grave robbers, that’s creepy. Rich people back then wanted to be buried with jewelry. I guess human skulls were fun to have around. I’m looking forward to the next part of the episode. Thanks guys!
I don’t think people appreciate as much as they should of those who came before us... I think it’s wonderful that you and Sarah visit a lot of these graves and tell their stories even if it’s just a mention of their name. Thanks again for what you and Sarah do! Always my favorite RUclips channel!👍👍
Thanks James! We appreciate you as a viewer who has great feedback!
Love learning more about our local old west history.
Beautifully presented.
great video... u guys were right by my teen age hood home... Preston school .... lots of history there.. thanks for sharing
Very interesting about the stagecoach driver, the route, etc. and visiting the Jackson cemetery. Look forward to more Jackson vlogs.
Thanks Arleen!
Thanks for all the prior research, location shots, and visuals you provide us with, Jeff and Sarah. Being a stage coach messenger was only for the brave of heart, I'd say. WOW an interesting video
👏👏
We appreciate your great comment, Rhonda, as always!
Love your videos!
Had to watch this video twice! Fascinating history.👍👍
Great editing! Loved the intro!
Can’t wait to hear your other stories on Jackson! A good reminder that I need to take more time in my life to travel and learn more about our beautiful state.
Awesome. You touch on everything I enjoy watching and listening to, With history. Thanks for taking me along. Till next time.
Good morning from Lodi....Thank you for sharing.
Good morning Banjo! Thanks for watching!
This was a great video! I loved the interesting history and background on Mr Tovey the Wells Fargo guard and the back story of some of the people buried at the cemetery too. Life was so short back then due to the lack of medicine and cures, or a chance getting shot as a “messenger” on a bank stage coach.
Keep up the great work both of you and look forward to the continuation of this one. Take care now! Frank from Philadelphia, PA.
Thanks again for yet another interesting fact in history. And what a lovely burial ground. Thanks Jeff and Sarah!
Thank you very much!
We love you guys! Thank you~ Adam and Mary in a 250 year old house in New Hampshire
Thanks so much! This makes our hearts glad!
Wow! This is history. Thank you for sharing Sarah & Jeff.
This was very interesting.129 years ago . How they lived and today we hear their stories. Thank you for the video. Pune City India.
As always, a fascinating peek into the past.
Good morning. Sunday morning with coffee and one of your informative videos. Thank you for all of the information that you have presented in this video. I would oh so appreciate a video done by the two of you about The Little Bighorn battlefield.
Great history story. No longer able to travel so I want to Thank You both.
You are welcome, Betty.
Somehow i missed this one but glad i watched it as was very interesting Thankyou Jeff and Sarah for sharing it
Great episode guys... you bring me back to my childhood many times with your presentations.
Thank you Jeff and Sarah for bringing a another interesting part of History. Looking forward to your next video, thanks for sharing.
Proud of him for never giving up
💛...i've stopped at the marker in the early seventies and had forgotten about it until seeing this... great episode... a lot of cemeteries in the area have segregated sections for 'different' nationalities... i have relatives in the rocklin and newcastle cemeteries in japanese sections...
Thank you Jeff!!!
Great video. Love the ones about the cowboys and Wild West . Thanks , guys !
Love this story, thank you!!
I was just driving by that spot today and wondered why that memorial was there but couldn't stop in time. Now I know. Thank you!
It’s a small world! Glad we could fill in the blanks!
Are you related to the wagon maker and automobile manufacturer, Ms Studebaker? The story of which would make a great History Hunter video.
@@Jbennyho we did talk about the Studebaker’s origins in our Placerville video. 😀
@@jbenziggy thank you for the reply. I will check it out again.
@@Jbennyho my husband is related to the Studebaker brothers (John Mohler was in Placerville as Wheelbarrow Johnny). They are cousins and share the same ancestors and great grandparents who came to America from Germany. They have the same high cheekbones. 🙂
My boys 6 and 8 love your show and look forward to watching a new episode every Sunday! Good job guys!
Thanks and tell your boys Jeff said hi! That’s so cool!
Thank you for sharing a great story
Thank you again for sharing these History Hunts. I must of missed this one.. Such Amazing History
Glad you enjoyed it! This was a recent release so you didn't miss it for long. Do you subscribe to a lot of channels? If so, that may also be why you missed it.
@@jbenziggy hey Jeff and Sarah. I do have other subscriptions and watch yours Everytime you release them.. I just missed this one.
I won’t miss another one I promise 🙂
Really Great Content.
Kind regards from England to you both👍🏻
Perfect Music. Oh my gosh.
Good Morning Jeff & Sarah, that was a interesting history, I feel bad for Tovey for what he went through. He sure was a brave man.
Have a great week. 🤠
Thanks Gregg! Glad you enjoyed our short video! Take care!
I remember, not being allowed to wear pants in school. It was in the 70s .That was such a absurd rule !! I think the stagecoach is a wonderful part of western history. The cemetery was interesting and unique. Thankyou 💖
Driven by that marker many, many times and was always going to stop and never did. I'll have to stop next time through. I hope you include the Kennedy Tailing Wheels park with your upcoming videos of the Jackson area. The amazing things they accomplished back in that era. Sunday morning ritual now complete!
As always very informative lots of stuff I didn't know I had no clue of I really love the way you and Sarah capture history! Thank you again my friend your number one fan Lou Martell
I find myself somewhere between Palliative Care and Hospice. A few years ago my eyes seen other services leaving, so they packed up and got out of dodge too. Reading has been a life long passion, your channel provided a substitute, as I seen all of your videos at least once. The exception being the live chats, I seem to miss all of them so far. As always great job on this one it's destined to be one of my favorite.
That’s heartwarming how you feel about our channel but heartbreaking about your condition, Floyd. How can I pray for you?
@@jbenziggy The comment wasn't to seek empathy, just to drive home the fact that at times our actions have effects on others we don't even know about. No prayers required or needed, dying is just another part of living.
Another addition to my history education on a bright Sunday morning, thanks Jeff and Sarah for yet another look at local history in my area!
I love this video, waiting impatiently for the rest of the Jackson Saga.
Another fantastic story Jeff! You and Sarah are great docents of California's early History! Since I live close by, I enjoy visiting some of these same locations, retracing some of your videos and the places you've already visited! Again, great Job, two thumbs up!
Thanks! If we are encouraging others to seek out history then we are a success! I appreciate you letting us know!
Great story on Tovey and the messengers! I've always found it interesting how these men inspired fiction writing of the old west and that's how we get the term 'riding shotgun!' The grave that had the nice ironwork was strange that it had a wooden marker. Someone had to have money in order to have that fence. I wonder if the marker and part of the fence was taken? Farley for instance would have certainly had a gate on fence. That would not have been cheap and yet there is no marker.
Wonderful history of a big man who never stopped. Looking forward to the rest of the stories.
Excellent episode! Thank you
Love the story, can't wait for future stories on Jackson.
Great job storyline, videoography , music and all ! Very interesting thanks for sharing! Bob
I absolutely love this channel!
The motherlode is full of history and is where I call home

Jeff I Love the way you present the History of whatever subject...you've Studied well & done your homework. The old pictures of what it would have looked like is Great. I Love how it's presented. Easy to understand & Follow. I homeschooled 5 kids for over 20 years. If my kids were still in school I sure would use your videos as Supplements. Thanks.
Thanks! I try to learn all I can before we visit a location! I’m happy that my research shows through! I appreciate your really kind comments!

In regards to the uncertainty surrounding the actual killer of Mr. Tovey, while they may have escaped earthly justice, he or they, never did manage to escape holding account before The Almighty....

Very interesting, thank you !
Another good video! Reminded me of my school days in Stockton, and I clearly remember when we we're allowed to wear pants to school for the first time.
Seems so strange now that it was actually against the rules! Lol-
Anyway, thanks again, you two!
Really good episode 👍
Thanks very much!
Here we are watching you explore the cemetery when all of a sudden our bedroom door closes on its own. Turns out one of our cats managed to close it somehow. But WHEW! That was creepy for a split second. 😂
