Here's the general deal with Darth Vader: he was born Anakin Skywalker, and more or less, the idea in Star Wars is that embracing things like fear and hatred leads to the dark side. Anakin was literally prophesied as one of if not the most powerful beings ever, and the Jedi (think of them as like...good knights/wizards) were hesitant to let him be trained, because even when he was a kid, he showed glimpses of anger and the like that made them worry he would be turned to the dark side. It's a very long story but the extremely condensed version is Anakin is manipulated by the Sith Lord Palpatine (the Sith being the evil equivalent to the Jedi) to think that the way to save his family is by using the dark side. Anakin gets manipulated, turns sides, massacres ALMOST every Jedi, fights his old master Obi-Wan Kenobi and damn near dies (loses I think three limbs and is burned by lava head to toe) and has to live the rest of his life being kept alive by a mechanical suit. Anakin's wife died in childbirth giving birth to his twins Luke and Leia, though initially Palpatine (now the galactic emperor) lied to him and said they also died. Anakin eventually redeems himself by helping Luke kill the Emperor, proving the prophecy that Anakin would be the one to bring balance to the Force after all. So yes, Vader is extremely evil, but pretty much all of his evil is rooted in extremely human, albeit sometimes selfish, human emotions and motivations, twisted and darkened by pain and suffering. The craziest part? The suit that keeps him alive also literally SUPPRESSES HIS POWER (a safeguard by Palpatine to prevent Vader from killing/overthrowing him) but Vader is such a BAMF that the SUPPRESSED VERSION is still one of the most iconic, terrifying beings in that universe. Just to give you a bit of a primer. :)
