@@tueclfpofks Doesn't matter if you're already slow: High alpha capability allows controlling plane when it's in "half stall" and as much falling down as flying forward. Lots of 40+ degree alpha in that last round while just keeping following Raptor in that downward spiral. Most planes would be out of control at that point.
That was honestly an impressive dogfight. I went into this thinking you weren't gonna get the kill at all and I have to say I'm surprised. I didn't think the Hornet would pull it off. Good job man.
In your next video, can you explain the geometry behind flat scissors, rolling scissors, and downward spirals? Not sure how to tell the difference between those most of the time
In Flat scissors, the planes weave left to right, keeping more or less the same altitude. Imagine two cars on the highway weaving thru traffic. In a Rolling Scissors, the third dimension is added, so they perform barrel rolls, essentially. A Downward Spiral is similar to a Rolling Scissors, but in the vertical, so both planes are loosing substantial altitude while doing the Scissors. Does that explain it?
The photo from the Super Hornet gunning the Raptor was back when the Raptor had a 1,000’ bubble in training and Hornets were and have always been 500’. The Raptor was lagging the merge to ensure a 1,000’ pass and the Super was tightening down; this happened several starts. This set the Raptor was easing at the start and the Super sold everything and got this fleeting shot; no BFM, just straight off the first merge.
@@XiaOmegaX Sea level in this case wouldn't matter as much because it's at ground level and pushing against solid ground instead of just air and exhaust
@@AhHereWeGo that's not how air pressure works. Anywhere under 500ft MSL gives max thrust. The terrain around coastal areas is down this low. Raptor has enough thrust to pull out of something like that with ease anywhere under 5000 MSL, much less down in denser air.
@@XiaOmegaX That IS however, how thrust works. It's the same reason that helicopters have a higher service ceiling when they can climb next to a mountain. Because the air pressure is increased behind the engines, when there is ground there, unlike when it's higher, it can spike the pressure under itself and increase the amount of thrust that would normally be had at whatever altitude.
And that snap shot picture, besides the air show ready Hornet vs combat loaded Raptor, the Raptor could have started defensive as well. Could have been a rookie Raptor pilot vs a seasoned Hornet pilot.
I really wish I could fly like that. I'm less than a week into learning DCS and the F-18 and every time I watch your videos it is motivation to keep trying in hopes that I can get this good or close someday

Might not be easy against Hornet which isn't slouch on that either: That last round had lots of 40+ degree alpha meaning plane was as much falling down as flying forward.
Legacy Hornets can out turn Super Hornets. They are lighter and have slightly better nose authority. However, the Super Hornet (aka Rhino) has the RANGE that we always wanted on the bug. It also has more hard points, larger engines, and better radar and other electronics. Really, the Super Hornet delivered on the promises the Hornet was supposed to be able to keep.
