I was raised a pentecostal, left the church and got into Taoism...then... after my 3rd psychedelic experience for trauma healing my third eye was opened up to my Spirit guides and the practice of Shamanism. From just my own personal experience I would sum up the practice of Shamanism as Oneness. Humanity is evolving from duality consciousness into Oneness Consciousness. We have come full circle 🙏🕊🌟🤍🔥

In a book on witchcraft it describes trance as the art of "mental fascination", where you're actually inducing an Alpha brainwave state of almost self-hypnosis. Fascinating the things our mind can do, and how much the world has to offer once we open ourselves up to it

To me, it really isn't all the complicated, but rather we make it complicated, lol! We give everything names and titles, and we have to do that so we know "who is who" and "what is what". We do this so we can identify and connect. But that is one reason I was never able to follow any neo/reconstructed paths of Paganism. I just found them too limited, and too focused on "what humans were doing" as opposed to what nature was doing. Shamanism was a perfect fit for me, as it encompassed everything I was already doing; trance, healing, communing with nature, etc. And I completely relate to sharing spiritual subjects on the internet! But I feel this is the medium in which we have to help others connect back to nature, so we should take advantage of it. Very well done my friend.

Describing clothing brought back memories, as a kid(5-6) I had a habit of collecting unusual' things in my pockets, such as scull of hedgehog, bones, its needles, also feathers, brenches, .... made necklace, hang them on my clothes, set outside under the trees drumming, singing, dancing.not the norm, so needless to say I was sent to church, wearing nice' things...40 years later, coming around, once again I am fully aware, got into energy work, got a drum, chanting, dancing, collecting things in my pockets, talking to plants..being called weird, but I feel so blessed, guided, connected and alive! Your video was great, appreciate authentic over fancy! Blessings❤🙏

I will vouch that cannabis, too, may have similar utility. It's gonna sound downright ridiculous, but when I first used cannabis I did so precisely under the intent of doing it for... _(unnh!)_ **SPIRITUAL** reasons. Indeed, it was this one thing that really kindled a real interest in (unnh!) _spirituality_ for me when before I had just been largely secular after a falling-out with dogmatic religions.

For nordic practice memorizing and reciting long stretches of old poems is a great way to get into a trance. Anything in the poetic edda. Also check out the faroese ballads, some icelandic sagnadans. The old ring dance associated with those is also a good way to get into a group trance where one person leads the story, and everyone else joins in on the repeated line in between each verse

I am working on a ritual like this. It will be based on the Loddfafnir sections of the Havamal. Where I will read out the advice Odin gives, and then everyone chants:
“I counsel you, Loddfafnir, if you take my advice"
      Pretty excited to practice it.

Omgsh. That is so interesting I have been so drawn to poetry I read it on instagram (so interesting the thousands of brilliant words out there by anon poets btw) I especially love those allegorical ones speaking on nature. This fascination was very random for me, I discovered at the same time I was drawn to learn ab shamanism by spirit - also totally random I didn’t know what a shaman even was . I have not understood the poetry connection I have to spirit until reading your comment! For me reading very abstract poetry about love and life’s darkest emotions - ((written by these beautiful souls that share their deepest emotions anon on instagram)) - seems to almost every-time open my channelling abilities up and I then Enter into this ^ trance like state they discuss here and I then begin writing ✍🏼 creative ways to describe lessons I have learned in life - using mostly animals and alleggories … that are inspired by spirit. ❤ ❤❤ this information you shared has connected some dots for me 😊thank you

All have a connection to the source, practitioners work in the lower, middle and upper worlds with spirits, ancestors and awarenesses and all life as well as the web of life. The shamans path is his or her own. There are different cultures but ultimatly we are tasked or called upon to help others heal themselves. And many of us start this journey by finding out why we are “broken”. Its imposible to help others heal when you can’t heal yourself.

    Long video, long comment 😂
It, spirituality in general in my mind, does come down to nature, our place in it, and our relationship with our spirit- I agree. A nice sacred grove there! Getting outside is so good for your spirit. Those spirits that want to help us are a blessing and should be held in high honor. Bold of you in general to have these conversations in this time! Everyone with their opinions and venom. With trance I get in and out of it without drums, I like to hear them or other music sure sometimes. I call this "zoning out" to most people and I get distracted in groups pretty easy so the best is solo for me but I enjoy the group journeys for a challenge! Whatever helps you of course! The best ones I remember boldly. I had one where I was in silence in a pose and it was just so stunning that I feel talking about it is bragging haha. Some things are just for you! This is true~

Another great resource on this is Awakening Spirits by Tom Brown Jr. A survivalist who was raised from the age of 7 by an Apache shaman he called “Grandfather”. The book is about Grandfather’s spiritual journey of transcending even his own religion to better understand the spirit world in the most simple way. It gives teachings and practices handed down from him in a way that anyone can incorporate.
I don’t think shamanism should be gatekept only because it gatekeeps itself. Many CAN enter, only few CAN go the depths beyond the surface.

Thank you 🙏🏼 for this! You did a great job of presenting it in the divinely guided and profoundly insightful-but also curiously ambiguous and uniquely individualized-(yes all of that - complex as you said) way that I observe shamanism and how it has manifested over time on this planet.
I also appreciate you addressing the qualities of core shamanism and Miriam’s analysis of how they relate . I gather from her and had suspected prior to this too that they only touch on some of the incredibly vast and complex overarching shamanic practices that one could research. Last thing is thank you Miriam for the information and note on “local” shamanism I couldn’t agree more that it seems to be a key element to anything I have learned studying shamanism in various cultures. When I am studying the shamans OF a society; and not shamanism itself are the time I have gained the most insight and felt an authentic resonance with.
Now I am so interested in the speakers community and I appreciate you having them on as well!
I am relatively new to researching but I found that Michael harbor guy in some of the first things On the internet when I researched shamanism & I didn’t Quite resonate with the vibes I got or the way that I was perceiving his teachings; however I do think the work his wife did was different and worth looking at
    Personal note :) on shamanism
-from the eyes of someone who has no idea why they research it but looks at all forms of it at the most basic level for no reason at all-…
I do not want to oversimplify anything but when I was first trying to grasp the concept after I had looked into shamisn in the western world, France, Russia and Druidism i asked spirit to help me conceptualize it all seemed to mean so many things to so many societies and none seemed to want to put a label on it and I am not great at that either so I asked the question “ what is the true shamanic practice ? and holds the true set of guidelines that are the most effective for healing purposes?”
    And I got back:
“The rules are; there are no rules”
I was stumped but then I got it. Haha it was one of the best things spirit has ever told me.
    My reaction:
    🤔🤨🤔🤔😯🤭😎
I just appreciate your “synopsis” . Thank you 🙏🏼

Last year after feeling like I needed some kind of spiritual practice back in my life I found myself randomly having symbols plopped into my mind from...something, still not sure what it is. Since then Ive been trying to slowly grow that set of symbols and practices as theyre revealed to me, but Ive been a bit lost in the woods as this time around it's not really based in any pantheons Im aware of, and Ive been trying to figure out what steps I should take next.
While I dont think becoming a shaman is quite what my guide/teacher/patron? Has in mind, theres certainly some elements here that are clicking, and as I was watching the video of course another couple things pop into my head with incredibly clear asaociations haha.

This is dope and I really like this presentation. I got involved in psychedelic activism and the decrim movement after using psilocybin to treat some significant mental health issues and the community has been inundated with people calling themselves shamans and healers. Psychedelic's are like steroids for the ego for some people and they start talking about themselves in the third person and going on like they're supposed to be the next Timothy Leary or something. I'm not joking these people have one or two powerful psychedelic experiences and they open a website selling their shamanic services. That's the only thing I disagreed with in this vid is the shamanic clothing part. I've been exposed to this scene for the last year and so I have seen a lot of people dress the part so they have the facade of authenticity and it's just feels so phony and has devolved into super cringe shaman cosplay kind of thing. It reminds me of when a flat earther or an evolution denier puts on a white lab coat so people are fooled into thinking they actually know stuff about physics or biology. But all that aside I really enjoyed watching this vid the whole way through. Keep up the amazing work.✌

Yeah. I will say psychoactive drugs are definitely not in and of themselves "shamanism" and taking a trip by itself does not "make you a shaman", but for me, weed definitely reoriented me toward the path in that direction. I still won't publicly call myself a "shaman" but I've been studying it pretty much ever since then. I'd also definitely not make a business out of it; to me, shamanism is and should be understood as something deeply communal - I am not sure current "western" culture with its excessively individualistic mindset can really fully accommodate it, though I _also_ think said excess of individualism is problematic generally. The best way that seems appropriate to use it is in conjunction with some sort of materially relevant, communally-focused type of life woek which for me takes the form of social/political activism/organizing. Indeed, I remember that, long before the weed encounter and back when I was a kid, reading a short treatise on shamanism, and one part that really stuck in my head was a claim to the effect that "shamanism is not a religion, but rather an adjunct to any religion". I feel that can also be said for other things, too.

Just a correction. Native North Americans absolutely DID NOT say we could use their rituals. In fact, they said the opposite. Please do NOT use our rituals. They saw it as yet another form of imperialism. "First you kill us. Then you steal our land and now you want to use our traditional spiritual practices." People (including some highly marginal Native people did it anyway--to their great shame.) (I am not making this up. I lived and worked with Native people in the 70's and again in the 90's and so heard their take on this first hand. )The whole point of Harner was to find a way NOT to try and absorb the cultures of others but to come up with access that was created by Euro-North American culture. Later, we of European decent, either inside or outside of Europe, went looking for our own traditions and for teachers of the world's traditions who might want to teach us--often to keep their own tradition from dying out. Historically accurate information is a hallmark of this channel, so I thought it would be good to set this record straight.

The Native American Center in Chicago, where I ran a free clinic, and which represents 30,000 Native people, had a strict policy about the issue of white people appropriating Native spiritual practices. Also, in the few times I have lived and worked with Native people (from various "tribes"-aka nations"), there has always been a strict policy that, unless you , as a white person, were expressly invited by a Native person to participate in a spiritual ceremony, it was strongly requested that you not do so.

The constant, repetitive beat of the drum synchs the brain hemispheres and allows you to enter an alters state of consciousness.
Shamanic drumming typically creates a low alpha or theta brainwaves. Thera waves are associated with the subconscious mind and dreaming.
Its pretty fascinated that so many cultures all over the world have been using such similar shamanic practices

I've wanted to paint it for a long time now but I wasn't sure if I could, as I wasn't sure if it would damage it or just flake off. But seeing yours, same brand and make, with paint makes me want to get that done asap!!

Lovely interview, but maybe good to also interview people who have been long standing practitioners for 10+ years, rather than someone reading their notes because they are still studying and not yet initiated. Would love to focus in on more seasoned spirit workers, esp in Northern traditions. Thank you for this video.

My partner and I are from Northern Ireland UK and apart from one or two Irish based practitioners there isn't one based here. We are thinking of doing a course on Druidism that will benefit mental and spiritual health. I have always had some kind of spiritual connection to nature since I was little because not only I've grown up caring for animals but they always seem to naturally come to me and never knew why until I began researching more into Nordic Paganism, Celtic, Shamanism a few years ago! I'm currently reading Mordern Shamanic Living by Evelyn Rysdyk, which goes into mental health side of Shamanic journeying😊

Dont let your ego blow up on that , many are or could be shaman , a shaman wouldnt call himself a Shaman. My suggestion , try to find a swetlodge ceremony , one where the also do the stone ceremony , yoou can ask them at forehand , in the swetlodge remember where u have put ur stone (s). Also inside the lodge all is about youself , remember. They might also do a healing lodge. Swetlodge Lakota , i had their way of shamanism , and to me it resonates very much with Syberian shamanism. Shamanism also talks on inner mystic sounds, the LIVING WORDS.. A deep research is needed in this field, pay Attention on the inner Mystic uplifting Sounds. There are many sounds, but there are 5 selected sounds that has a uplifting affects to the soul.. a deep research is needed
    Sound of the bels
    Sound of counch
    Sound of drum beat
    Sound of thunder
    Sound of violin
    Sound of flute
    And etc
A deep research is needed.. this are not outside created sounds. This are inner mystic sounds heard in deep meditation, with the help of a true master

The best book is by Piers Vitebsky, called simply enough, Shamanism. In it he shows the commonalities and differences in the world shamanic traditions by drawing examples from many world traditions without the need to homogenize them. One warning is that he does emphasize the dangerous aspects of shamanic practices a bit. I think he is merely trying to offset what I call "shamanism light" of Harner. Everything has a dark and light side and shamanism is no different. Harner de-emphasized the darker aspects in order to give more people access to the Spirit World without the fear that had been engendered by the mono-theistic religions-not a bad goal at all. But it is good to know the dangers of shamanic practices as the world's traditions have seen them, not to avoid the practice, but to approach it with the respect and caution it deserves.

Thank you Jacob, another insightful video, you make videography an art. Especially in this one you had a few backdrops that we're stunning.
My question for you is what role does a fully fledged shaman play in the modern world I didn't entirely understand from your clips in your interview, perhaps it's in the full interview? Also is shamanic practice for everyone do you think or are only certain individuals built for these practices/ that role?

    • @TheWisdomOfOdin
      @TheWisdomOfOdin  2 года назад +3

Shamans still perform a similar role to what they would have in the past. A shaman is a spiritual advisor for those seeking help, but also "heals" with the help of spirits. Micheal Harner goes into great detail of what a "healing" ritual is like. Typically this helps with things doctors still struggle with such as chronic pain, lingering effects of a past illness, or even mental blockages. Many of these things are curable in the spirit realm.
To be a shaman is a very sacred and hard path. Many traditional societies have cultural ways to choose a shaman, such as lineage, and signs from a child growing up. I know in Spirit of Wolf it is a natural and organic process. You can show interest in becoming one, but it is not until the spirits decide you are ready do you become one in the eyes of their community.
      Glad you liked the video!

in the 90s, i worked with michael harner and other foundation of shamanic studies (FSS) faculty members ... michael specifically said that core shamanism as he presented through the FSS is intended to be authentically functional, globally legal (excluding russia at the time where practicing any form of shamanism was illegal, even owning a drum) for anyone interested in spirituality of pre-civilization and/or being organized religions that was ruled by a priesthood as the ultimate authority ... also, a primary mission of FSS was to reintroduce former shamanic cultures prior to being annexed by civilization/religions to reclaim their shamanic heritage from using FSS core shamanic practices and the lore of whatever was remembered by their elders and/or academic literature to reclaim a functional, tribal shamanic tradition ... the FSS used profits from teaching workshops to fund programs to reintroduce core shamanism to peoples who had lost or were losing their shamanic traditions ... that said, the drum was selected as the instrument for 'sonic inducement' of altered states of consciousness because it was the #1 instrument used globally to mobilize consciousness ... and because the drum was the #1 most legal instrument around the world (excluding soviet russia) ... lands where natural humidity was too damp to routinely use rum without continually drying them over a fire to maintain useful sound ,,, such as the amazon in south america that relied primarily on psychotropic plants for visionary work ... nevertheless, when harner was developing and introducing 'core shamanism' was in the time period when LSD therapy and psychotropic plants were being made illegal in the usa ... however, rattles, click sticks and tibetan bowles and other instruments with monotonous tones were employed as well ... yet, michael selected the drum since it was the #1 universal instrument that was universally legal , excluding russia until after the collapse of soviet russia ... lastly, michael did, in fact, considered his courses to be foundational, and encouraged participants to trust their power animals and allies for their purpose, direction, how to preform for self and/or others, etc ... michael's only severe caveat was to not call one's self a shaman, unless one could 'perform miracles at will' ... otherwise, in western culture, the best descriptor is 'shamanic practitioner' ... being similar as to western culture's delineations between a medical doctor, a nurse and someone who is an accomplished practitioner of first aid ... michael routinely warned against anyone articipating in a few or many 'workshops' as justification for calling oneself a shaman ... thus, if one participated in every single workshop offered by michael harners foundation for shamanic studies, they were not initiated nor sanctioned by him or the FSS to use the title of shaman ... he was clear that shaman was a community service, not a cultural title such as 'doctor' as sanctioned by education and the AMA ... a tribal shaman received the title by being recognized by her/his community as being able to provide this valuable service ... 'students' of the FSS, however, would receive a superb foundation from which to grow ..and . IF willing to invest in disciplined time and effort in communicating with and following the advice of one's power animal, animal allies and other teachers in the lower, upper and middle worlds - it could result in being able to work miracles, at will ... however, neither michael or FSS sanctioned initiations or the use of the title of shaman ... michael's intent for FSS core shamanism was specifically designed and implemented to give participants a superbly functional foundation in a cross-cultural application to universal shamanic technics and methods from which on could discover their own, intimate connections with shamanic arts that were not believed as being valid by most communities in the usa ... therefor, each of us was responsible for discovering our own way ... speaking for myself, my investment in FSS workshops with faculty members and with michael paid enormous dividends ... as did my time with angeles arrien .... and chance meetings with others ... blessing to you all who accept the calling, you won't regret it

This video made me think about another question now that the discussion about Sámi is on the table again. I'm not sure if the Norse people had their own shamanistic tradition or not, but at least the Sámi people have said that the "Norse Shamanism" and the "Finnish shamanismin" has actually been ripped off and appropriated from their Sámi noida tradition and Norse people have not had their own shamanic tradition before the modern carnivalization, exoticization and marketization of shamanism. However, my comment does not mean that we should be offended or angry with the Sámi people, but that it is better to join the constructive and moderate discussion and respect their opinion on the matter so that they respect your opinions and if there is other evidence, present it.
