The FASTEST WAY to O'Hare: Metra North Central Service Revisited

- Metra's North Central Service runs from Chicago Union Station in Downtown Chicago to Antioch, Illinois. Along the way, the route passes by O'Hare Airport and has a stop by the airport called "O'Hare Transfer". I had to fly out of O'Hare last week and part of my journey to get to the airport involved taking this train line. I decided to make this video to illustrate just how efficient and easy it is to get from Downtown Chicago to ORD. The only drawback to the NCS is that it runs weekdays only and even when it does run, the schedule is pretty limited and you can find it below. I hope you enjoy this rather different trip report on Metra.

Could have been more informative if you had shown us (1) where the bus terminal is in relation to Union Station; and (2) where you go from Metra to catch the Airport Rail Shuttle.
As a regular Chicago visitor I've always seen this option, but besides it being infrequent and no weekends, where I usually stay at in downtown it's much more ideal going via CTA. And that trek from the station hut to the APM platform AND THEN finally to one of the terminals adds another 15 or so minutes to the total time. The good old Blue takes me right into pretty much Terminal 2 just off of its platform. But I may try it once just for the heck of it. And with the O'Hare CTA station always in constant repair closure a billion times a year anyway, at the end of the day, staying at the onsite Hilton is the best option LOL!

Very true. I always prefer this over CTA simply because the CTA, while cheaper and a little more convenient, is pretty sketchy lol.
The Blue Line would be good, except for several reasons. Among them:
1--The CTA uses the smallest rapid transit cars in North America. As such, there are no places to put your luggage.
Given that the Blue Line also is close to Union Station and Greyhound, this is also a factor. And if you're traveling in peak periods it can get awfully crowded.
2-- A lot of homeless people camp out on the Blue Line. And they meander between cars looking for handouts. I realize that these people are unfortunate, however. ...
3--The Blue Line STINKS and I don't mean that figuratively. Cigarette smoke. Weed. Evidently it's now legal to smoke on the CTA, especially weed. My ride to work is only five minutes but as often as not, I have to holy my nose.
4--Lack of common respect. Litter everywhere on the L. And if you're lucky, you'll be "treated" someone else's "music". Or some Tik - Tok addled pinhead mindlessly and loudly scrolling through videos.
The Blue Line would be a great option if there was a place to put your luggage and if the rules of common courtesy were enforced.
This train is fast Ive only been on CTA to Downtown from Forest Park and my little brother sometimes would spend the day at my grandparent's house and he liked trains so my grandparents took him on Metra for the day around the city while I just watching your Trip Reports Edit: 14:28 Avgeek Moment, This is literally me every time I see a heavy lol
I actually saw this station when I was dropping off a rental car at the Multi Modal facility earlier this year. I was surprised by the location and was curious to find what trains served the station. Now I know. Thanks!
Idk if you know about them yet so I apologize if I’m telling you something you already know, but if you buy your ticket before boarding there’s little metal slits on the wall by where you hand them your tickets & you can just slide your ticket into the slot so when the conductor is walking by they can just look at your ticket & proceed!
If you are going to New Orleans, you could take Amtrak from Illinois Terminal without the hassle of Greyhound-Metra-TSA stuff
Of course but due to time constraints I needed to fly to be in New Orleans soon plus my dad was meeting me in Chicago to fly with me.
My thought was Amtrak Champaign-Union Station, then from the south concourse to the north for NCS.

Not sure how efficient the Metra trip was. If you had jumped on the CTA at Clinton, you probably would have been at O'Hare by the time the Metra train left the station. Plus the CTA takes you underneath the terminal (no need for a shuttle to the airport). But I get it that the CTA isn't the most luxurious mode of transportation.

Western Ave is where the roadway underpass is before the platform apparently. So I guess why it's where it's actually located.

Hello! Yes, any luggage allowance on Metra. No problems there I say.
When I first saw this video posted on my Subscriptions page, I thought this was a rehash of your previous journey to the AI convention. This time, you made the effort to show us the Greyhound stop,an explanation of the bus's tardiness and the walk to CUS. I haven't been on CUS property in many years so the interior has vastly changed since I was there last. I don't know how Metra makes any money on this route if passenger counts are typical of your run. If you want to see the Anticoch route come together with the Milw-West line from the cab car POV, check out Jersey Mike's Rail Videos channel--he has an excellent two segments filmed during the morning rush to CUS, LOTS of horn used, even parallels a West Line train for a mile or two to River Grove! Looking forward to the next installment!

Do you take the train to Chicago from champaign? I am moving to champaign in October and will be traveling back to Cleveland frequently on the weekends. Any tips with getting to Chicago? I know there are flights but they can be quite expensive.
Traveling to Cleveland on the weekend ? That’ll be rough. I went to school in Champaign and I just abhorred the train/bus home to chicago that I just never went home. It’s on average 4 hour trip give or take depending on traffic. There’s a couple of variables at play.

How long from the station to the airport? Is the shuttle frequent?
The airport train takes 2-3 minutes to reach the terminal area. It’s a 5min walk from the station to the multi-modal facility where you catch the airport train across to the terminals.
I live by O’Hare and take the Metra to work into the city, but I always recommend the blue line instead of Metra for going to O’Hare.
It’s cheaper, faster depending on what time of day you go, it’s a lot more frequent and it’s easier to get on if you have luggage. Also you get dropped off inside O’Hare versus needing to still get a shuttle in.
The blue line isn’t that sketchy. I’ve taken it for years. Now, the red line is sketchy. I would recommend avoiding that one lol.
The Illini station really took me back to my college days. Along with ptsd from all those delayed buses and Amtrak trains.
