My favorite feature of the "L" are the outside heat lamps on the 'L' platforms. Heat is available from November to March. You can stand under them while waiting for a train when temps are in the single digits. A very welcome sight during our harsh Chicago winters.
I rode CTA quite heavily when I lived near Chicago and I am truly appreciative of the work they did as I rode Metra heavily as well along with Pace for suburban buses when needed. Will always appreciate the hard work that the people who work these lines do
Luis, this video was so well done!!! As a person who has taken the CTA most of her Iife, I was truly impressed with all of the information you included...and so detailed. Loved all the locations you went to, also!🤩🤩🤩
If you're a first time L rider, its very easy to navigate through the city (Unlike the New York City Subway). Signs have clear directions and very easy to understand.
Hey Bro, I'm also from South Florida 👍🏽 My wife and I are in Chicago for a few days. Thanks for this video. I really think that the best way to truly know a city is to take the transit system. Chicago is pretty awesome, we just might move here. ✌🏼
Luis makes great videos, and y’all should definitely move here. Check out his video about South Loop (current resident). It’s super cool. Chicago has 200 neighborhoods to choose from.
I needed this! I’m from LA where we don’t really take public transportation and I’ll be visiting Chicago next week. I’ve been before but never have taken the L before. I’ll be taking it from the airport to my hotel so this helped a lot!!
Hi! We love your videos on RUclips for Chicago! I was hoping you & Narissa could make a video for train & bus tip safety for a young person riding by themself. Like where should they sit, what to do if approached? Thanks!
Love it! Kudos from someone who spent my first 46 years in Chicago and many days riding those trains. Thanks to both of you for making it simple, informative and fun!
Thanks for this guide. The blue line from O'Hare is definitely a great option to take to the Loop downtown. I took this last time I was there to my hotel and it was very easy.
Great vid. If a visitor takes the train from O'Hare into the city during rush hour, what are a few etiquette tips regarding luggage on a crowded train? Also, are there places on the "L" for luggage?
Thank you! Unfortunately, there are no luggage spots on the train like I've seen in Europe. Usually people stand them next to them in the aisle or stand with them in a space without seats. Either way you'll usually be in good company with other luggage holders so it's nothing to worry about 😄
I’m visiting Chicago in January for the first time and I need to get from O’Hare to the city but I’m still scared to try this 😆 I know it’s cheaper than an Uber and it would be a cool experience considering I’ve never ridden a train but I’m still very confused ☹️
I've always wanted to visit Chicago. I've only been to O'Hare twice due to layovers, so those don't count. The El is definitely way more extensive than the subway system here in Toronto. We only have four lines and it's been a decade-long undertaking to construct the fifth one, LOL.
You definitely should! And what a coincidence bc Toronto is high on my list of places I want to visit, would definitely want to see a Blue Jays game. Didn't know you guys had a subway system there, really cool to learn that. Thanks so much for watching!!
I just noticed that the history portion of this video is the least-watched. That sad my favorite part. :( From a huge rail history and public transportation enthusiast, thank you for including that and making this!!
I've not been to Chicago but I knew about the "l" system from an old TV show called "M-Squard" featuring Lee marvin as a police detective in Chicago. The old black and white series was filmed in Chicago. As a New Yorker, it was the frist time I knew subways existed outside of New York. I've had alove affair with Chicago but haven't been there YET! As soon as we regain some really safe semblance of normalcy, I plan to visit the Second City to see it fro mysself and ride the L!
This is an amazing video, you can tell alot of work was put into it. I love all the useful information you put, as a Chicagoan definitively going to link this to out of city friends!
Luis - I'll be traveling to Chicago later this month and have found your videos incredibly informative. Thank you for taking the time to post so much about the city. Chicago is fortunate to have such an engaged and knowledgable ambassador. all the best, Rob
My teenage years were in Chicago I took the Lake Street out a lot of times this was very informative I wish I knew this when I was younger I had a lot of time on my hands I could have gone on the L and went to all of these places that I at the time didn't know existed being a kid thank you very much this was a great video
We have only 2 lines which run 24 hours: the Red Line and the Blue Line. The rest have a mostly 5 AM to 1 AM type of schedule. (I think the Yellow Line has shorter hours and the Purple Line only runs during weekday rush hours, except the portion which runs through Evanston).
Really awesome video, planning on moving to Chicago in the future and have been looking for a good introduction to the L. Super helpful seeing this from a native Chicago perspective it was the one thing I wanted to understand from day 1

Wow, I was always too nervous to take the L because I've used the SSL in the past, and it seemed needlessly confusing. I just recently went to New York and used the subway there, and it was so easy! I figure now it's time to learn my way around chicago's rail system.
Southside born and raised. and former cta employee. Enjoyed your video, but you didn't mention that the cta was the first to put trains down the expressway medians. Also passenger etiquette doesn't work on all sides of town. L is unique, and it's a Chicago treasure.
Amazing facts and great history information. You’re awesome! Thanks for the great info. Seems like the best and most efficient way of travel throughout the city.
Color blind people would prefer number, letter, named rail lines. I used to jump up on the Cicero Ave platform on the Douglas Milwaukee line and spend the whole day on the L when I was a lad. I enjoyed the video.
Chicago does put the names on top of the colors. Even the countdown clocks that tell you when the next train is arriving have a spelled out version in smaller font.
Man this was very helpful. I have been to chicago many times but never used the cta. Will be using it in 2 weeks to get from midway to amtrack. I downloaded the venture app. Now i have to figure out how to load it.
I was born in chicago moved to Los angeles ca after HS then moved to Vegas, to Az to Florida ...miss the El train haven't been back since 1997 so much has changed since then ..$2.50 is a cheap way to go from home to work and always been best way to travel, avoiding driving car especially to downtown ...thank you for this awesome video.
Coming to Chicago this June for holiday n hopefully this will help me to navigate around the city ..can anyone tell me how is the weather in June n what best out fit to wear ..is it summer season
Great video! Love Chicago and planning to move there in a few months. Thank you for making these videos, they are very informative. I have a question, do all it most of the stations have elevators or escalators or are there stations that require walking up snd down stairs?
NOT all L stations do have elevators or escalators. I'd say it's over 50% of stations that are accessible, as of today. Though there are some portions with a lot of not accessible stations, particularly north of Addison on the Red Line and also many Purple Line stations. And many of the Blue Line stations on the Forest Park branch, along with a few on the O'Hare branch, still aren't accessible.
Great job on this video! (and your whole channel, really) The tips and tricks reminded me of the preflight videos they play on planes except I was actually paying attention to your video! 😅
Thank you on your train guide to the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority), Luis plus your girlfriend or your friend. At the end, I stick with the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) in NYC. 😃👏👏👏
I know this video is a couple of years old now but it's worth mentioning that CTA lowered its fares. It's $2.25 to ride and up to 2 transfers are now free
very informative! thanks man! i used to go to Chicago all the time to visit my family on my summer breaks, and would always get excited to ride the L, because it was the best way to explore the city
I live in Georgia now, and I miss taking the Orange and Purple/Brown Lines to and from work every day. This video was nicely done, it was interesting and informative. Thanks for putting it together.
I took a vacation in Chicago (for a week) in late 2022, and I used the L (and some CTA buses) as much as possible to get around. SOOO much better than driving or having to take a cab or Uber :P I can't wait to move to Chicago around 2028 or so (hopefully). Definitely gonna sell my car (or try to, at least) for 2-3 grand extra before the move! So SICK TO DEATH of car-centricity, especially in my current area (St. Louis metro area), particularly given that Metrolink, by contrast, is kinda "shit" in terms of areas it services and reaches (especially outside City of St. Louis, where only, like... the 5 or 6 'easternmost' St. Louis County suburbs or municipalities have actual train service; the rest has, at best, middling bus service, I guess; there's also some parts of western Illinois with Metrolink, but that probably is similarly as "uncomprehensive", in the end). To actually live in a BIG, WALKABLE AND MOBILE area with good transit- that's a "dream", ngl.
Having the additional option of Metra, for further-out suburbs of "Chicagoland", makes transit in the area *even-better*, or so it would seem! SO MUCH covered by just CTA and Metra! Granted, Metra is probably not quite as "high quality"- at least, in terms of some factors, like frequency of service- but it's nice to know that, if I "need" or "really want" to go to a certain Chicago-area suburb that's a bit 'too far' for CTA- once in a blue moon- I could, in theory, take that as an alternative without having to use a vehicle! ;) Of course, I'll probably be 'too busy', in my free time (especially some weekends) just exploring the regular-Chicago area before I ever 'venture further out' anytime soon, haha And hell... supposedly *even Skokie* is covered by a line (Yellow) of L, interestingly enough? Funny enough, I actually stayed at a hotel in Rosemont during my Chicago vacation. Part of the reason, among other factors, *was* specifically the Blue Line station (which I found out about during a very-brief 2017 vacation there). Kinda cool that even a handful of suburbs *outside* of the community areas also have L stations, too I think there are also the "surviving remnants" of a really-old interurban, somewhere in the area, called the North Shore Line? nice
I'm going to be in Chicago on the 18th and 19th and will need to ride the orange line to connect between the south shore train and midway Airport. I should only need to ride the train once each day, so should I buy a single trip ticket each time, or should I get the $5 card? It sounded like you said the price you pay for the card goes towards your next fares right? So $2.50 x 2 would be $5 which that card should cover, whereas buying the single trip ticket is $3 each. Or is that not right?
Awesome video! Thanks for the info tomorrow I will be in chicago and I have no idea how to use the L. Would you recommend simply using my contactless card to pay instead of buying the ventra card? Also, how do you pay on the busses? How does the reader know that you are doing a transfer so that it only charges 25 cents? thanks !
i remember lake and dan ryan green line a and b stations all stops on weekends before they made it red line north and south in 1993 they change color and the orange line was born 1993
Fantastic video of the CTA. Having lived in Chicago back between 2005 and 2011 I used to ride the CTA every single solitary day. Growing up in California we have bark, not quite the same please excuse the mistakes in typing I have a disability where I'm actually blind
Don't know if this works in Chicago but from what I understand, you can use Google Maps to get from one place to another... If you put in directions you can find options for walking directions, car directions, or public transportation. The public transportation ones tell you where to go at what time. Maybe try taking a few short trips like that till you get the hang of it.
Thx very informative. I would love to see two videos from you. "What to visit in Chicago in 2 or 3 days". And ". Thx abest places for good photos in Chicago" thx a lot
I'm in Calgary Canada. We have a public transit system for people with mobility problems. Does the CTA accommodate them? Wouldn't that be difficult with all the underground stations?
@@mayloo2137 Many of the CTA stations have elevators that allow for wheelchair access and accessible doors for clients with mobility issues. My only caveat is that it is hard to find a washroom unless you go to the Big department stores in Chicago.
My favorite feature of the "L" are the outside heat lamps on the 'L' platforms. Heat is available from November to March. You can stand under them while waiting for a train when temps are in the single digits. A very welcome sight during our harsh Chicago winters.
I wish they did it based off tempreture. Years ago, it would either still be cold or get cold before they began cutting them on.

And after all that they say this is a ___ line train to ___
It’s the best part of the L. Lol

L is most underrated transit in usa maybe north american 24/7 service

Awesome video! Thanks for the info tomorrow I will be in chicago and I have no idea how to use the L. Would you recommend simply using my contactless card to pay instead of buying the ventra card? Also, how do you pay on the busses? How does the reader know that you are doing a transfer so that it only charges 25 cents? thanks !
For short trips it's better to buy a day pass
i remember lake and dan ryan green line a and b stations all stops on weekends before they made it red line north and south in 1993 they change color and the orange line was born 1993
Thanks for the info! The CTA has such a rich history 😎
Me too
Why not underground?
Fantastic video of the CTA. Having lived in Chicago back between 2005 and 2011 I used to ride the CTA every single solitary day. Growing up in California we have bark, not quite the same please excuse the mistakes in typing I have a disability where I'm actually blind
Thank you! I love the CTA and miss riding it every day as well
I love your videos! They are so helpful and informative. I am moving to Chicago in August!
Thank you so much!! Hope you have an amazing move to the city 😎
victoria, just warning you whatever you do, DON'T MOVE TO THE SOUTH SIDE
Crazy Gamer I’m living in Logan square :)
Crazy Gamer I’m applying to a job in south loop. Is that considered the south side?
@@victoria6155 No, that's considered downtown
Yo I really like your style, you got that confident attitude lol keep up the good work bro! 👍🏾 liked and subscribed!
Really appreciate it Khadeem!
Visiting for the first time in July. Super excited to take the CTA. I love LA metro so hopefully it’s a good trip
I only like the trains, train lines and rails. THAT'S IT!
😂
I live in Chicago my whole life and I still haven’t learn how to the trains. I have to start learning soon and hopefully I will be okay when I do it
Sounds good!
Great information. Thank you soooo much
5:14 Express on the weekends *laughs in morning rush*
Thx very informative. I would love to see two videos from you. "What to visit in Chicago in 2 or 3 days". And ". Thx abest places for good photos in Chicago" thx a lot
Thank you ! I’m at the airport and need to find my way around . This was very helpful!
Thank you so much for this video! It was very helpful!
Nice brother, thank you for share.
I'm in Calgary Canada. We have a public transit system for people with mobility problems. Does the CTA accommodate them? Wouldn't that be difficult with all the underground stations?
Many of the stations are very accessible with riders with mobility issues.
@@edwinperryii1122 we have one underground station which has elevators for people who have trouble with mobility. Do you have something similar?
@@mayloo2137 Many of the CTA stations have elevators that allow for wheelchair access and accessible doors for clients with mobility issues. My only caveat is that it is hard to find a washroom unless you go to the Big department stores in Chicago.
