Still listen to WA regularly after 40+ years. Andy Powell has been one of the most underrated guitarists playing in one of the most underrated bands in Rock.
I am thrilled to see the amazing Wishbone Ash featured here! They are an absolutely fantastic band and have never received the respect they've richly deserved for years and years. One of the absolute top guitar bands in pop music history.
I saw Wishbone Ash at Buxton rock festival over 50 years ago in the days of there Pilgrimage album, we sat out on the moors till the early hours of a cold day listening to every note played, what an experience...
Band of my teenage years, who pointed me right to where i am today. My musical idols and my music "school". One of the greatest ever. Argus is definitely one of the top 5 masterpieces of all times.
I remember standing next to Andy Powell at a Curved Air gig with Dutch band Trace in St Albans. He got up with both bands and they jammed together, great concert.
Woo Hoo ! HOW did I miss this ? These guys been my fav's since I was a young Teenager. I painted a reproduction of Live Dates album for my 7th grade art project, which won. I still listen often and it's like ALL the really greats, NEVER gets old. Thanks to these guys for making the soundtrack to my whole life ! Doctor..can you help me please ?
About time the Ash got some appreciation,a great early twin guitar band ,very melodic and great tone ,thanks for showing this clip, and the analysis, classic stuff!
Brilliant anylisis of a brilliant guitar band. Especially loved how you complimented Martin and Steve. Easy to focus on the twin lead guitars which are fantastic. Thanks so much.
Was very lucky having seen them a fortnight later in Freiburg/Black Forest. That show just blew me away. Still listening to my Wishbone Ash records to this very day. And, amazing what quality we got back then on German public TV!

Wow, Wishbone Ash I have not heard them since I was a young girl. I loved them. My parents played great music in our home everything but country yuk. I love the grunts and ooh. Real men, real style, real music, sexy singing, great raw guitar playing. They emote great emotions.
They are one of the greatest love bands ever. Even with all the lineup changes, they always give a consistently fine performance. Thanks for pointing out how well they used two guitarists. That's why they are so good. A criminally under appreciated band.
Nice to see you analyze Wishbone Ash, the first Liveconcert I ever went to in 1974 in Amsterdam,at the age of 16. Next day went to the recordstore and bought Argus, listed in the UK as album of the year in 1972, a legendary rock album. They were one of the first rockbands with twinlead guitar lines and Andy was the star with that flying v gibson. Saw them again in the later eighties at the Paradiso in Amsterdam in the original lineup and they where still rocking the stage.
Martin Turner is a great bass player! He influenced me to play bass in bands! Loved his melodic and jazz runs. Wishbone Ash was one of the best boogie bonds in the early seventies! They had the perfect musical chemistry!
Saw these guys back in 1975, Hammond Civic Center, Hammond, Indiana.... Great show, for sure....One thing about all the shows I have seen through the years, THEY WERE LOUD! The only other that excelled Loudness was Nugent... ... Wishbone Ash was and is still a very credible band...
I saw Wishbone Ash in November of 1972. I was 16 years old. It was my first trip to the Warehouse in New Orleans. The Warehouse has a great history of live music.
New England was an amazing album. I still remember buying it the day it came out and that is when my dad realized I was really serious about the guitar.
Saw Wishbone Ash live, in early 70's at a fest in San Diego, FOGHAT and so many other groups just an intense band!! Love these bands you choose to review Fil thanks for bringing back great memories!
fil, if you have not already, would you please review John Cipollina of Quicksilver Messenger Service? .. Just an amazing guitarist and underrated in my opinion... Perhaps you could chose a better video to review but I loved this: this was live and also showcases Gary Duncan just awesomeness ruclips.net/video/nXrPvHePueA/видео.html
Just love your expression. So great to see a young musician appreciating the classics from the 70s. Really a great time in music. A real treat for us who lived through it. Saw Wishbone at least three times! Love your channel! Thanks for the great video as always, Fil.
"There's the Rub" was the first album I bought.... was such a great sound in the mid 70's... thanks again Fil for dusting off some awesome classics to check out, it really takes me back!
amongst my favourite songs from them you will find 'Throw Down the Sword' and 'Phoenix'. in the first song you will find a double guitar solo (2 guitar playing together).
Andy Powell Steve Upton Ted Turner Martin Turner. They played well together I like the way that Upton cued the rest of the band and kept them in time. I seen them live at the swing Auditorium at the Long Beach Amphitheater and one other place I can't remember now I once felt sorry for Bachman-Turner Overdrive because Wishbone Ash open for them and played one hell of a set. But I think I started listening to them in 71. On The Velvet Underground.
@@b42baritone I was there also Wishbone Ash warmed up for BTO. They played their first few songs BTO and they ended up bringing a whole bunch of guitarists on stage. just to make noise.
Like many in the comments section, this is a pleasant blast from the past. We listened to them often on our FM radio stations, and I had one of their albums. Thanks for explaining why I liked their music.
Well Fil, you made me so happy analizing Wish bone Ash !!! Thank you soooo much for this , you fine gentleman. can't wait to see your next analysis , thank you, thank you !!! You're the best on youtube !!!
Thanks for analyzing this one as well as the other times. I grew up with "Rockpalast nights" in those years. I'm glad to be remembered of these great events in my youth.
I'm from Holland Fil, and the Ash is regurly touring in my country, my brother and me go whenever we can, and enjoy the duelling guitars, Andy is still on top of it !!! they mostly play in smaller clubs and you can actually talk to the guys !!
As a lesser known fact, Andy Powell is being one of the guitar heroes of grandmaster Michael Schenker! 🎸 Wishbone Ash is fantastic, amazing guitar duo! Listening them, since the mid 80's.
Such good melodic playing, and ,yes ,great tone ,sublime ,live,or recorded, Live Dates ,is so good ,always loved them ,saw them ,in a club in the 90s ,and their sound ,was 100% not too loud ,and so clear. ,good call Fil.
I saw WA in 1974 at university, playing to a crowd of less than 50! Hard to believe considering Argus was named album of the year in 1972, by the UK Sounds mag and that Yes and Zappa having had played there the same year to packed crowds. Yet they still put on a great show with everybody there having front row seats (actually standing - no seats). Terribly under-rated band (in Canada anyway). Argus still holds up today. Nice review.
Their prophetic lyricism was conscience -piercing and thus off-putting to the run-of-the-mill fans of common Rock and Roll. I calls WA a Prog Blues band.
Hey Fil, yet another great video. The 70s had by far the best rock music, bands and legends. Thanks for highlighting this for the younger generation so they know what great music this era brought us and for keeping this music alive. ROCK!
One of the very first concerts I saw as a very young man in the 1970’s was Robin Trower with Starcastle and Wishbone Ash. I didn’t realize it at the time but I was witnessing absolute genius. I wish I could go back in time and see that concert again, knowing what I know now…..
I first saw Wishbone Ash in 1972 opening for Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Second row seats. I had not heard of Wishbone Ash before that night. An incredible concert. The next morning I went out and bought all three of their albums. For me, the original lineup with Ted Turner had the most memorable songs with the Argus album being the high point. I have a younger friend that was more familiar with the Laurie Wisefield lineup. I think there tends to be periods in your life when the current music has a more lasting impact on your musical preferences.

I discovered them with the New England LP which Run Away is taken from; to me that’s their best work; I worn the LP and was glad when I finally found the CD in Germany one day!
Great to see you analyze Wishbone Ash Fil! Love this band saw them back in the day with originals also with Laurie Wiesfield, and many times up to this day, still a Great band putting out good albums!
This is another band I listened to a lot during the '70s. Amazing sound. Another winner Fil!! Barclay James Harvest please? Another great band from the 70's!! 😀
Great stuff as always, Fil. Wishbone Ash were one of my favourite bands back in the day, I love that twin guitar sound - to my mind it's peak was the end duet on Throw Down The Sword with the two guitars weaving in and out of each other. Look forward to watching the rest of this concert.
Fil, please do a revue of Martin Turner's bass solo playing: particularly something like "Sometime World" where he sings over the top to a different rythm. I have no idea how people can do that, it has always eluded me.
Andy is a HUGE Hank Marvin fan. He told me it was that sweet clarity of Marvin that so inspired him. In all of His time in Wishbone Ash, you just know he is still using Marvin's influence.
Okay, another year went on but still appreciate your enthusiasm in your face while analysing great guitar playing. Wisefield is really a heck of a player and was a great replacement for Ted Turner. Thanks for all your very entertaining videos. Cheers from Germany.
The first three Wishbone Ash albums are truly extraordinary. In particular, the first album is an instruction manual on twin lead guitar playing (i.e., harmony leads). While Thin Lizzy are my ultimate dual lead guitar band (particularly the Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson version of the band), Wishbone Ash were incredible too. Thanks for featuring Wishbone Ash!
People always cite Argus as The album by these guys.I'll take that debut album every time.Exactly right about being a text book for harmony dual lead guitars. That album kicks ass and the leads rip through all the songs.Argus is much more laid back and mellower overall.
Great band. Saw them 1975 Western Springs Stadium Auckland - There’s the Rub Tour. Steve Upton got in the shit for announcing FUB as “Fucked Up Beyond Belief” Oh how times have changed. Loved them then aa now. Thanks for your insights Phil. Great channel.
Thanks for sharing this fil , wisbone rocks til its ash . You convinced me that they are a great live band . Thanks for this . Keep up the good work . Greetings from belgium
I bought 2 Wishbone Ash albums, Argus and the one with the wooden wishbone on the cover that contained my favorite track from them "Phoenix" still one of my favorite rock songs. And it was their synced twin lead guitars that I loved.
Still listen to WA regularly after 40+ years. Andy Powell has been one of the most underrated guitarists playing in one of the most underrated bands in Rock.
In 1972 they released a masterpiece called Argus
I bought it immediately - I was 15 years old

Andy Powell is still with the band. Man, they play with a nice big sound. "Argus" was a great album, back in the early days of the band. Great pic!
You are so right sir....still have my original vinyl copy!!!
Martin Turners Wishbone Ash is the
better version now performing
Wow! you did WA. They were so good in concert. Silver shoes is a fav. Thanks Fil. 💙
These Pommies seriously
Rock On.
Maybe the very best UK
1970's under appreciated
Band in Rock History.
Long Live Wishbone Ash !
One of the best British bands from the 1970's . All top notch musicians and Steve Upton a brilliant drummer.
Band of my teenage years, who pointed me right to where i am today. My musical idols and my music "school". One of the greatest ever. Argus is definitely one of the top 5 masterpieces of all times.

Argus is incredible. Thanks Fil
I remember standing next to Andy Powell at a Curved Air gig with Dutch band Trace in St Albans. He got up with both bands and they jammed together, great concert.
I always loved the way they fashioned their leads. Not just blind jamming (which I also like), but leads with a "story."
The King Will Come & Sometime World are two of my favorites - pure 70's British rock that hasn't aged a day
Woo Hoo ! HOW did I miss this ? These guys been my fav's since I was a young Teenager. I painted a reproduction of Live Dates album for my 7th grade art project, which won. Thanks Fil, I had forgotten about these guys. So cool.🤘
Saw them twice , very good in concert , actually saw them in the early 70
One of my favorite bans right behind Rory. Used to go watch them back in the 70's whenever they would come to St. Louis. Loved the review.
Wonderful band who I saw live in the 7-s when they toured Australia for the Argus LP.
Wishbone Ash excellent band! Thanks for this video and analysis. Rock! ❤😎^m^
Big fan from the early days.1970
Or so.
Seen them live loads of times
Newcastle City Hall being one of them.
Saw Wishbone in Edinburgh 10th Oct 1978. One of my first gigs and they were superb.
Always loved this band. Andy still keeps the legacy alive with great guitarists throughout the years. Awesome video and analysis, thanks.

Great insight and analysis as always, their stage presence is classic rock art form too!
I was at their show in 1976, and it started indeed with Runaway. The best concert in my life.
A highly unique style, executed perfectly, one of most under rated bands in rock history!

The most underrated rock band ever! (With Jeff Healey Band)
For me, Argus is one of the best albums ever made.
New England was an amazing album. I still remember buying it the day it came out and that is when my dad realized I was really serious about the guitar.
Became a fan while serving overseas bought one of there albums in our local PX 1974 I believe. Excellent musicians great live band.
Great group and guitarists too .I enjoyed them in Lykabetus open theater in Athens in June 1983 .. Unforgettable concert .

I love this band. Great musicians. The british class...LIve dates I and II are great albums. Thank you
One of my favorite bands.....Argus album is a killer.....Throw down the sword has incredible dual lead.....thanks Fil
That song with its dual-lead should have been the song reviewed (it sort-of contradicts what is said here).

amongst my favourite songs from them you will find 'Throw Down the Sword' and 'Phoenix'.
in the first song you will find a double guitar solo (2 guitar playing together).
