National Anthem Mashup

- An original piano mashup of 50 national anthems, from countries covering 72% of the world population!
The selection and combination of countries were entirely musical decisions. This video doesn't make statements on any country. Similarly, the labels are written in the official languages of each country, plus an English translation.
=====================================
So yeah, as promised I have finally followed up the Christmas Music Mashup with another piano mashup... after 3 years. This one took around a week to write and was more difficult than the Christmas Mashup due to a lack of familiarity with most of the material. Overall, I feel that it's less catchy as a song, but a more satisfying product due to the greater variation of style and my more sophisticated approach to accompaniment, modulation, voicing, etc.
The UK/US duet is partially quoted from a quodlibet written by Glenn Gould. It doesn't have a title, nor was it formally published, but searching those keywords up should lead you to a discussion on it. I'm usually hesitant to quote others, but it was honestly too good to leave out.
There is an easter egg for Canadian viewers :)
=====================================
Errors/notes:
- Beyond some creative liberties in terms of tempo/repeats, there are some small errors that arose from arrangement differences in the Spotify playlist I used as reference. Luckily, these don't impact the counterpoint/harmony so I will change these for the official sheet music copy, but unfortunately I can't change them here.
- The opening statement of Italy's anthem (0:37) should start on G, not C. Thanks to Elisabetti Nessi for pointing this out in the comments.
- Some straight rhythms in Afghanistan’s anthem (1:54) should be dotted depending on your source.
- A couple anthems are missing a note or have an extra note that doesn't really affect the sound.
- The Afghanistan flag and anthem here are the old ones used prior to Taliban takeover in 2021.

Hey all! Thanks for the amazing feedback and kind words. You guys have no idea how much it means :) Some thoughts:
1) Sequel + Twitter
I'll be writing a sequel to this soon and will post updates on Twitter: twitter.com/williamyao_. I don't love the app, but until I hit 1000 subs on RUclips, there's no way for me to communicate with you all beyond uploading new videos. So I'll use Twitter for text updates.
2) Missing countries
Many of you were sad to see that your country wasn't represented. This is inevitable for a 5 minute mashup, but the good news is that I will try my best to include in the sequel every country mentioned in the comments.
And just to set expectations - I saw comments suggesting that I mash up all ~200 countries in the world. While I would love to, realistically I can only fit 50-60 anthems per video... I would also add that you can probably fit 100+ anthems if you play only short snippets, but I think this impacts their musical enjoyability. France/Indonesia are repeated so often here because I'm trying to establish them as main themes and give this mashup some structure.
3) France-Algeria, other unfortunate combinations
Oops... I knew that Algeria was formerly a French colony but didn't know how destructive their war for independence or how their relations work today. There are also other such situations in the video. I can't promise these awkward moments will be completely filtered in the sequel, but I will certainly consider them more carefully.
4) Editing software, sheet music, other behind the scenes stuff
I use Premiere for the video and MuseScore for notation. For sheet music, I'm still deciding how I want to format and distribute it. Other than that, I'm planning on producing a short tutorial video where I discuss the writing/editing process and any tips-and-tricks.
>>> If you want to see your country in the sequel, post it in a comment and I'll try my best! And subscribe to stay tuned for more content :)

fun fact: The melody of the French anthem that goes “Allons enfants de la patrie” literally inspired the Philippine anthem’s “Aming ligaya na pag-“. It was added by the Philippine anthem’s composer Julián Felipe to show solidarity with the world’s many revolutions against tyranny.
Speaking of anthems that work well together, Colombia and Russia's anthems almost sound the same, any explanation for that or is it just a coincidence?
That's strange because France's National Anthem was probably the first National Anthem ever made, so maybe it was the other way around?

1:33 - 1:53 so melancholic and hopeful

This sounds amazing! I’d also like to point out that whenever France’s anthem played, it was almost always alongside a country that has historically been under French influence (Algeria, Belgium, Andorra, Cameroon, Djibouti, etc.)
I noticed this while writing too. Personally all of those except for Djibouti definitely "feel" French without also feeling like any other European anthem I used here. As for Djibouti, it's written in a major pentatonic scale which I associate more strongly with East Asia, but I'm happy it somehow still fit into the chorus.
I can tell you one of the times it wasn't (PH) it was because the composer of the anthem (and TBH the country as a whole) was heavily inspired by the french revolution at the time.
It's also funny because Algeria explicitly criticizes France in their anthem yet the two songs go quite well together
I was thinking that too
Eek! France!

This song was so more powerful than it seemed, maybe that’s me being really weird, but I felt like I could like…feel every single human’s pride, dead or alive, I could feel them smiling down this small little segment of (pun not intended) harmony, between everyone and their countries, truly amazing
