Thank you once again for your support Maurice. You picked two of the best places to visit in the southern hemisphere Maurice, I hope you enjoyed your trip 👍🙂
Hello David, nice that you also shared the holiday with us, it looked great. I also hope to see the tubes again in a video where they can show off in all their glory in a beautiful antique radio that you have restored. It's always impressive how you can bring a shabby old radio back into the condition it was in when it came out of the store. I'm glad you enjoyed the stroopwafels, the waffles do indeed belong together, just like an Oreo. If you ever visit the Netherlands, try a fresh stroopwafel where the filling is still soft and warm. I'm glad I could help you with the radio tubes and if you can't find a tube please let me know.
Hello Frank, The cruise was fantastic and I hope I can use your tubes in a radio at some time, they are getting hard to find. I did visit The Netherlands a few years back but was unaware of the Stroopwafle at the time unfortunately. Thank you once again for the tubes and waffles 👍😀
Stroopwafels are nice. It took a long time for the chief Dutch manufacturer to enter international markets, but now they can be had in North America as well as Australia.
What a fantastic holiday, nice one. I have one of these little transistor radios that my son bought me when he was a school boy. He is now 50 years old and the radio still works fine.
Watching a Bolton being fixed in Australia from here in Bolton, UK. A chap where I used to work in the 80s had a radio exactly like that but in a red colour, and I think it was branded "crown."
Welcome back Mr. and Mrs. Tipton. I was just thinking of your channel the other day and was delighted to see a new radio adventure this morning. Thank you.
Hi Chris, Yes, it was a bit different wasn't it. The cruise was great, you two should try it one day. Princess have a table tennis comp each sea day 👍🙂
Yes those solder connections all look a bit dodgy. Replaceing those electrolitic capacitors was the icing on the cake. A lot of equipment has suffered just because of a few faulty caps. Low values under 100 Uf can be a problem. It's great that you and your wife injoyed you trip away on the cruse ship. Maybe a tast of better and longer trip by ship are in the wind . Looking forward to the next " David Tipton radio adventure".
Electrolytic caps have limited life so always good to replace them. It did improve the sound. We have done 4 cruises, the longest being about 15 days. Thanks Stephen 🙂
Having never seen the inside of a ship (Except for watching Love Boat in the 80's) I thought you were kidding at first. Thats the most luxuriously laid out accommodation I have ever seen. Even on land. Glad you had a great holiday Dave
Most ships are very well decked out (see what I did there 🙂) Resilient Lady and her sister ships are a step up from most. Thanks 1974UTuber, it was a good trip 😊
Unfortunately I lost my sea legs in my 30s, and the one time I got on a harbour cruise, I spent the entire cruise face down in a toilet before being carried off at the end. I didn't even have a single drink. Much smaller boat though.
With the wafers place them over the warm coffee mug (narrow so it doesnt fall in ) The heat melts the syrup a bit and infuses from the steam a bit of coffee flavour
Thanks Gregg, a great cruise after my initial scepticism of the Virgin Voyages way of doing things. Unfortunately they won't be coming back to the southern hemisphere next season until tensions ease in the northern hemisphere. Avoiding the hotspots makes the repositioning trip too long apparently. Cheers! 🙂
Stroopwavel tip 101. Allow the stroopwavel to sit horizontally above the mug and wait until the syrup becomes molten to a goo-like state of matter. What's when it's best to eat it. You were correct about not pealing the stroopwavel apart.
Oh my god what have I done... I explained in the email that this is the traditional way to eat the stroopwafel but I failed to explain this properly. I hope the stroopwafel police don't find out about this video because the way he handled the stroopwafel will result in huge fines.😮😮
I am fully au fait with Stroopwafel etiquette now Branden thanks to tips by yourself and others. I have one stroopwafel left and will try and get it right with my afternoon coffee. Thanks 🙂
Thanks David! A cute litte transistor, that one. I can imagine you liked the cruiseship: it has a stack of giant black valves on top! Rumor has it you've been caught with a multimeter there in the middle of the night ;-)
Hi David. I enjoyed the pics of your cruise. It looks fabulous. We must do it one day. Maybe when I retire... Cute little radio too. I feel better knowing that even Dave Tipton can burn something with a soldering iron 😀 Cheers.
Yep, Perth is a popular cruise port, the around Australia cruise is a good one to do and not that expensive. I was very annoyed when I melted the case, I gave myself a stern talking to off camera 😄 Thanks Don.
We have been on 7 Cruise's and that was one of our favorites back in 2010. If you had your RUclips channel back then, we would have love to pop in and say hello! Our second favorites was the Alaskan Cruise, and a 13 day Cruise to Hawaii. We always had an outside cabin. Didn't want to wake up in the dark! And food all day long was GREAT! Also enjoyed being able to turn the TV on and see how far in the route we were, the Temp. out side, and the speed we were going was handy, 2 other's we did be plane were France and Italy. Wish we had done the Italy trip by Cruise. We always did the late seating for Supper and reserved the same table. Most people don't know you can do that. Speaking of Espresso machines, we have the: Breville Dual Boiler Espresso Machine BES920XL, Brushed Stainless Steel.
Hello TubeDude. This was our fourth cruise and by far the best as far as the ship goes. I restricted myself to brunch and dinner and sometimes a cookie with afternoon coffee. The meals were small too so we never felt stuffed. As well as some TV channels and the ships position there was an extensive range of included movies. The room was controlled by a small tablet. Turning on the TV put the room into theatre mood, the curtains closed and the lighting went into a light blue edge lighting mode. It was all very well done. We did the late dinner as well on other ships, this one, you booked a table like a normal restaurant. Thanks TubeDude 🙂
Well done mate. I just returned from a CelebrityCruise on the Beyond to Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao and also had a great time. The Mrs loved it. Your cruise also looked amazing..... where else can you eat, drink and get entertainment for a relatively reasonable price :) Great work always
Hi Ron, I'm glad you enjoyed your cruise. I was worried about this Virgin cruise because thay had flipped cruising on it's traditional head. I needn't have worried though, it was very well done. For what you get, the prices are very reasonable. Thanks Ron 🙂

Ahh, the same cruise at the same time? Virgin were very different. Did you try the cheese steak at Agave, I had it with some jalapenos on top, magnificent 😋🙂
A pity Peter, it was the standout restaurant and not spicy at all. My brother-in-law and I harvested the jalapenos from our wives meal. The waiter looked after everything and if you didn't want any heat he would take care of that. Next time 👍🙂
Looks like you had a great cruise! I'd love to go on one to Oz/NZ from Japan and back but, unfortunately, the wife gets seasick standing on a concrete pier so no cruise for me. Those cruise ships are getting ridiculously big! Makes you wonder how they stay afloat without capsizing. Nice little radio there.
I was in the Navy for ten years and have not felt an urgent need to go cruising again. However, if it meant getting to Europe or North America without going through airports or doing 16 hour flights I’d consider it. Nice little tranny, thanks for the vid. I have a collection of early Sony 6’s in each of the colours released. All they needed was recapping. My dad had one and sat it on the dash of our FJ Holden in the early 60’s. He had it connected to a large 9V battery via a long lead to save buying the expensive small batteries all the time.
I can understand you having enough of ships and I guess the cruise ships return to the northern hemisphere for their summer season, getting back might be a problem. I well remember small transistor radios propped up on the dash back in the day, a far cry from what we have today. Thanks Roberto 🙂
Oh my gosh the rooftop is even better than i imagined after you described it to me. Looking at your footage sure makes me want to go on a cruise someday :-). I love the design of the little transistor radio, it must have been fun for you to work on something from you FIL. Hope you r footy team is doing well, my hockey team ran out of steam after Christmas and didn't make the playoffs again this year. Oh well guess it just give me more time to watch your videos, lol. Thank's for sharing, it was sure fun to see your younger self for a few moments. Your wife looked so happy too. Tell her i said hi. Be well my friends
Hello Raymond, I used RR to it's full advantage, particularly at Happy Hour. The hot tubs were fantastic after a workout in the gym as, with a glass of champers of course. We met some lovely people up there too. I don't remember FIL having the radio, I found a few radios in a cupboard I had never seen before, this was one of them, I left the others to other members of the family. Yeah I was surprised at my younger self as well 😄 My team won last night, we are looking good. Thanks Ray, I will pass on your Hi to Karen 🙂
What a glorious looking cruise David. The height of luxury! With bars, restuarants, sundecks, and the rest of the ram-a taz. Visiting New Zealand, fantastic! A place I would love to go. The only cruise I have ever been on is to The Isle of Man to watch (and marshal) the TT races. When I say cruise there, The Irish sea is not noted for smooth sailing or sunshine (spend more time feeding the seagulls with your breakfast)!!! OH and the radio. There were so many produced and sold by lots of manufacturers in the early days. Haven't seen such an example though Bolton is the name of a large town close to us. Anyway you got it going and that is the main thing. Best wishes Lynton G4XCQ
Hi Lynton, It was the best cruise ship we have sailed on. We also 'cruised' from Dover to Calais, pretty ordinary trip. We passed up the opportunity to sail from Ireland to England and flew instead 🙂 Theses radios were plentiful here too, this one was a bit special having belonged to my Father in Law 👍🙂
Hi David, If it were me and I was confronted with the same symptoms I would try pushing an earphone plug in and out of the earphone jack a few times, this has worked for me a few times.
It's good to get away David, You and your Wife looked like you had a great time. Nice little radio as well, You could of named this video Project Blue Book. Anyway well done all round mate.
Hi Dave and the wife, welcome home. Looked through your site but cannot find any details of your Signal Tracer/Generator. Have you done a construction video of the kit? If not , any chance? I know there are other ideas out there but we all trust you and it seemed to work great. I have a few small radios here and a good working Tracer would help a lot. No rush . Many thanks from Nr Liverpool UK.
Good morning Dave, Nice to have 2 updates from Australia this morning (the other one from Cutting edge engineering) As for them stroopwafels; me myself i don't eat them that much, but my extended family in West Africa, enjoy them very much, as they are more into the sweet foods and yes i bring the bit thicker ones, these seem to be a bit on the thin side. Always enjoy your contents , have a good one.
I was hoping that the extra cost should give you access to the ship's radioroom, then you would really have a perfect holiday, haha...great video as always.👍
There are very few chances of damage of electronic components like transistors, diode etc on 3 volt battery supply, volumes resistor or any printed board brak, however, Bolton radio is very nice looking especially color and compact size
Thanks for the Cruise update Dave. I was wondering how you fixed up that bit of the case you melted? I presume you heated it up and used a little palette knife while the plastic was hot, or something similar? Be good to know for a "10" thumbs bloke like me. I've done it myself and haven't been able to repair it. You did a great job. Spill the beans please mate Ha Ha...
Great things do come in small packages 📦!! I wouldn't mind going on that cruise myself. Looks like Italy or something. If ya were sent a cookie 🍪 with your radio 📻, please check ✔️ it for any infestation before eating. Ya don't want to get sick 🤧. My birthday is next month. Your friend, Jeff!!
This is an urgent call for a miss Tipton will you please ask your Husband to leave the Radio Room as he all ready removed the front panel from the transmitter. Saying something about it needs a recap. Lol Regards from up top Shaun
That's the first place I would have gone. A ship called the Anastasia (I think that's right) a medical missionary ship put in in my hometown giving tours. I had met engine room crew who I gave a ride to, they got me a tour of the lower engine rooms, that wasn't offered to most people.
Picton or Piction? And I think you're supposed to rest the waffle on top of your cup to let it warm through. If the waffle wasn't that big, it would fall in.
Oh... you noticed that 😟 I didn't see the misspelling until the video went out. It's Picton of course, I know that. I have since been educated on waffle etiquette, I will try it today. Thanks Andy 👍🙂
You had a wonderful holiday but it was back to work all too soon. Did the radio have a stuck contact where the headphone plug goes into the jack? Wasn't clear on that David. But after melting it a bit and E- cap replaced its a nice little radio once again.
Hi Steve, it was a very good trip, thanks. I wondered if the earphone contact was dirty but I did check that. I really don't know what 'fixed' it, earphone socket or bad solder. It's still working so I fixed something 😄
hi dave great video .Just a quick question where did you get your signal tracer from. Home made ? It is a tester that i could find very helpfull. cheers
I'm surprised they didn't issue you your own sheep upon arrival to get the full Kiwi experience or was that an additional charge? ;) Looks like a great trip. Visiting Australia and New Zealand are on my personal bucket list.
@@DavidTipton101 Thanks David, I decided to dismantle a CRO probe and remove the Caps to make it a straight through. Will put the Diode in the Tracer, also going to try a preamp with an agc just to see how it goes
Unlike old valve radios that need Viktor Frankenstein's intervention, not that old transistor ones having some soul left get scared at disassembly (naugty fingers with a screwdriver can be deadly) and put all they have together to show ability to function :)
I suspect some corrosion on the switch on the earphone connector that disconnects the speaker. I think you were fooling with it when the radio started to work. Those cruise ships are amazing, aren't they?
Nice job, Dave! I laughed out loud when I saw the Sex Pistols album. Was that really one of the records in your cabin? Love that album, BTW. Where was the Bolton made? Hong Kong? And thanks for the cruise highlights! Fabulous!
I think that album was the first one on Virgin records so it featured in all the higher grade cabins, not my cup of tea. I didn't see any indication of where the radio was made, I would suspect Hong Kong due to the time it was made 🤔🙂
Dave, you have such a wonderful and sly sense of humor that I honestly thought the record player and the Sex Pistols album were a joke. Cruises are great! And your cabin was gorgeous.
1:32 Is that pronounced nappy-air? I never heard of the place before, but I've only ever seen Carson Napier in print (it's the name of a fictional character), never heard it pronounced.
@@DavidTipton101 Just like my name, Tars Tarkas. I'm a big burroughs fan. I did hear the name pronounced in a librovox recording, but they were probably just as wrong as I was.
Another great video as always. and I'm glad you paid attention to the tubes I gave you, I hope you enjoy them.
Greetings Frank Kerkhuizen.
Thanks again for the tubes Frank 👍🙂
@@DavidTipton101 You're welcome.
David, you place the waffle on the rim of the coffee cup. The rising heat melts the syrup. Then you eat it.
Thanks Joseph, I have been told that already, I will try it today 👍🙂
Glad you and your wife had a lovely cruise. Neat radio. Perfect for sneaky listening!
Thanks Shannon 🙂
Wow what a great cruise, absolutely gorgeous, glad you guys had a nice time & thanks for sharing!
Thanks James, it was very good 🙂

Good steam Dave. Excellent pictures of the cruise but I still ain't goin' on no darn boat. Good to see you back mate.
Each to his own Mark... they have to drag me off at the end of a cruise 😄
That looked like a great cruise David!
Regards from the Netherlands.
Paul.
Thanks Paul in the Netherlands 😀
this is so great,. thanks
Thanks sa8die 🙂
Nice! Very nice! What a great cruise. Btw, Tauranga is pronounced, tar-wrong-ah :) I love your work!
Ah... right tar-wrong-ah... thanks David. Yep, a great cruise 🙂
Best wishes
Lynton

Hi Lynton, It was the best cruise ship we have sailed on. We also 'cruised' from Dover to Calais, pretty ordinary trip. We passed up the opportunity to sail from Ireland to England and flew instead 🙂
Theses radios were plentiful here too, this one was a bit special having belonged to my Father in Law 👍🙂
Hi David, If it were me and I was confronted with the same symptoms I would try pushing an earphone plug in and out of the earphone jack a few times, this has worked for me a few times.
Hi Peter, I shorted the earphone socket out to no avail. It still could have been the problem of course 🙂
Looks like you had a great cruise and trip around the north island. Never heard of Bolton radios, it looks quite novel (LOL).
Ha ha... good one Gad. Thanks 😄
It's good to get away David, You and your Wife looked like you had a great time. Nice little radio as well, You could of named this video Project Blue Book. Anyway well done all round mate.
Yes, it was good and we had a great time. Haha... good name Anthony. Thanks 👍🙂
Thanks Chris. The details for the tracer are in the description below my videos. Click on "More..." to see it 👍🙂
Looks like you and your missus had a great time. I hope so.
We did, thanks clasicradiolover 👍🙂
The problem with cruises is that afterwards you have to go to the Weight Watchers, or worse still, to the AA.
They had a gym which I used extensively. I don't drink much either 👍🙂
Hello Gerrit. I expected them to be sweet but they were pretty good sweet wise. I see our local supermarkets sell them too 🙂
The wrapper on the stroopwaffles had the word gouda on top. Cheese biscuits with syrup in the middle? Interesting....
Yes, these were made in Gouda, no cheese included 😄
I was hoping that the extra cost should give you access to the ship's radioroom, then you would really have a perfect holiday, haha...great video as always.👍
Haha... I think the people on the ship had it in hand 😅 I was too busy enjoying myself.
There are very few chances of damage of electronic components like transistors, diode etc on 3 volt battery supply, volumes resistor or any printed board brak, however, Bolton radio is very nice looking especially color and compact size
I agree, thanks
hanif 👍🙂
Thanks for the Cruise update Dave. I was wondering how you fixed up that bit of the case you melted? I presume you heated it up and used a little palette knife while the plastic was hot, or something similar? Be good to know for a "10" thumbs bloke like me. I've done it myself and haven't been able to repair it. You did a great job. Spill the beans please mate Ha Ha...
Thanks Geoff. I was able to clean up the damage and the top cover covered it luckily. I need a smaller iron for solid state stuff 👍🙂
Not Italy but New Zealand is an amazing place to visit. The cookies were fine. Happy Birthday for next month 🙂
This is an urgent call for a miss Tipton will you please ask your Husband to leave the Radio Room as he all ready removed the front panel from the transmitter. Saying something about it needs a recap. Lol Regards from up top Shaun
I was way to busy enjoying myself to be wandering the ships internals Shaun 😅 Thanks!
That's the first place I would have gone. A ship called the Anastasia (I think that's right) a medical missionary ship put in in my hometown giving tours. I had met engine room crew who I gave a ride to, they got me a tour of the lower engine rooms, that wasn't offered to most people.
Yahoo a new video!
Thanks Ken 🙂
Put a siroopwafel on top of a cup of hot coffee or tea. About 30 to 60 seconds. The inside gets gooey and delicious.
Thanks for the tip Stanely, I'll try that with my afternoon coffee 👍🙂
@@DavidTipton101 You turned me on to Vegemite, so it's the least I could do!
Home made ? It is a tester that i could find very helpfull. cheers
Thanks Chris. I see you found the info 👍🙂
I'm surprised they didn't issue you your own sheep upon arrival to get the full Kiwi experience or was that an additional charge? ;) Looks like a great trip. Visiting Australia and New Zealand are on my personal bucket list.
No Sheep were injured in the making of this video. Both countries are well worth a visit 👍🙂
Absolutely it's just the 18-20 hour flight from the US to Australia that royally sucks.
Hi David...You should start a food channel sampling food from different countries and rating the quality..... haha😁
Hi Buzz, that's just what I need... more food 😅
Great Video as usual, just wondering are you using standard a CRO probe with your signal tracer?
Hi Joshua, I was probing the AF section so a standard probe was Ok for that. I would use a demodulator probe for the IF section 👍🙂
@@DavidTipton101 Thanks David, I decided to dismantle a CRO probe and remove the Caps to make it a straight through. Will put the Diode in the Tracer, also going to try a preamp with an agc just to see how it goes
Good on yer Frank. I wonder whether Frank watches Huygens Optics on RUclips as well.
Thanks Pablo 🙂
No, I don't know that one, but I have now subscribed to it, thanks you for the tip.
@@20kilovolt It can get very very deep! ...but always interesting - and local to you perhaps.
Unlike old valve radios that need Viktor Frankenstein's intervention, not that old transistor ones having some soul left get scared at disassembly (naugty fingers with a screwdriver can be deadly) and put all they have together to show ability to function :)
Yes, you have to be a bit careful with solid state stuff, not as forgiving as valves radios. Thanks Deep 🙂
Well, if you've never melted the case with a soldering iron, you haven't really been trying!
Hi Vic, I did it without trying 😄
I suspect some corrosion on the switch on the earphone connector that disconnects the speaker. I think you were fooling with it when the radio started to work. Those cruise ships are amazing, aren't they?
I don't know 4X6GP, I shorted the ear piece contacts to check that but it is still a possibility. The ship was amazing 🙂
@@superhet7281 Yeah, no... it was in the cabin. Virgin Voyage... Virgin Records 🙂
Mr Branson always protective of his first name, as Dick's Deck would not sound the same (sounds like something on a pirate ship)
Haha... that doesn't have the same ring to it 😄
1:32 Is that pronounced nappy-air? I never heard of the place before, but I've only ever seen Carson Napier in print (it's the name of a fictional character), never heard it pronounced.
It's pronounced nay-pee·uh. I cut the sound clip in the video so it sounded a bit cut off. Carson Napier... Edgar Rice Burroughs??? 🤔
@@DavidTipton101 Just like my name, Tars Tarkas. I'm a big burroughs fan.
I did hear the name pronounced in a librovox recording, but they were probably just as wrong as I was.
HA ha DAVID THE ONLY MAN I KNOW THAT BUST A RADIO TO MAKE IT WORK , YOU AND YOUR MAGIC FINGERS . oops sorry about the capitals my bad
You can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs they say. Thanks George 😀
You said a cup of coffee, you mean a cap of milk, haha.
I selected a different coffee than normal, it usually doesn't have that much milk 🙄
